'■ • { : V •• - C - J'V . • Southwestern Heights Mustanger 1976-1977 Unified School District 483 Kismet-Plains, Kansas 2 As salesmen, we have worked for goals that we felt im- portant. But of all the accomplishments, the friends we have won are the important and lasting rewards of the year. 5 6 8 Board and administrators take part in year's end act- ivities. School board president Larry Winfrey and board member Louise Atwell congratulate Ann Donahue, salu- tatoriam Gerald Jacobs, vice president, and Vonn Rich- ardson talk with Raylene Penner, SWH graduate, who served as commencement speaker. Tommy Lee, member, congratulates Shari Angell for earning valedictorian hon- ors. Sam Douglas and Don Thorp, members, observe the graduation activities from the office. Howard E. Gray served the district as superintendent while D.J. Miller served as high school principal. Grade school principals were Harold Jantzen, Kismet, and Weldon Allen, Plains. Teachers Take Part Ed Rush, biology, chemistry and physics teacher, gets in some time in the green house with his tomato plants. Pat Rains, girls P.E. teacher, is shown with two high school winners of the Swimathon; Kay Short and Sharon Sheldon. $1,908 dollars and 45 cents were earned for the Heart Association. Boyd Ayer, head football coach and American History teacher, is also the voice of the Mustangs basketball team during Sub-State and State tournaments. His spotter is former coach Stan Reiss. 10 In Various Activities Clifford Thomas, English teacher, turns his camera over to an amateur for a minute and what do you get, a dumb picture. Mary Brown, English and Speech teacher, starts on the job of making up Julee Freuchting for one of her plays. Ernest McVey, vocal music instructor, watches as his groups go through their paces in one of the concerts during the year. I 11 Teachers Take Robert Kaberlein, SWH Counselor, goes over job op- portunities and career education with L.H. Brown in his freshman orientation class. Jack Dunham, crafts and auto mechanics, helps Marcia Schupman with the selection of design tools in leather crafts. Dale Currier, math instructor, has a full schedule rang- ing from basic algebra to advanced math. 12 Part In Class Woodworking and mechanical drawing instructor, Doug Johnson, teaches furniture building on the job and in his spare time reproducing Early American furniture for his own use. Mary Ellen Langhofer, home ec. instructor, gives Vicki Gray a hand with a sewing project in home ec. II Mary Krause, language instructor, works on vocabulary studies with Gilford Lubbers. Mrs. Krause plans to go to Austria this summer to further her experiences in the European languages. 13 Lee Courtney, social studies and coach, spent much of his time making and using a variety of audio visual aids in his classes. Jean Abercrombie, English instructor and librarian, re- built the library's collection of books, and audio visual equipment this year. Steve Gill, instrumental music instructor, is shown directing his SWH band prepatory to the state music festival. 14 Coach Carson looks properly humble as he accepts the trophy signifiing Coach of the Year. Art White, vo-ag instructor is ready to start the day of farm visits to his students. Jean Johnson looks as though she has found a funny as- signment or it it that she knows Don Brown didn't get his picture in the annual. 15 TSJttk1 h Special Staff Serves UPPER LEFT, Lucy Bromwell serves as secretary to Mr. Gray. She also serves each of the students and teachers. Mary Ann Burdick serves as secretary to Mr. Miller and the student body. Due to various circumstances the cooking staff under- went many changes during the year. Cooks PICTURED AT THE LEFT are Geneva Bruner, Teresa Paine, and Mrs. Spencer. Serving as custodians for the year were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Nichols and Jack Rinehart. Jack is also the dis- trict maintenance director. Kenneth Merritt spends a lot of time on the road between Kismet and Plains in his job as bus supervisor and mechanic. Mustangs Win 7 Lose 2 Even though they didn't make it to the playoffs the 1976 Spirited Mustangs football team experienced a successful sea- son. The Mustangs held their record to 7 wins and 2 losses with both losses coming from the Iroquois League champions, the Ashland Bluejays and the Iroquois League champion runners-up, the Fowler Goldbugs. The Mustangs opened up the 1976 season at home with their first win over Spearville by the score of 29-6. The next game they traveled to Protection and defeated the Panthers with a score of 12-6 in overtime. Our Homecoming was to be the site of the annual rival game against the Meade Buffalos, but the Mustangs weren't to be shaken. They galloped past the Buffs with a much celebrated win of 15-14 in sudden-death playoff. The Mustangs traveled homeward from Ranger coun- try with a 43-6 win. To up their record the Spirited Mustangs traveled to Coldwater and came out with a win of 33-6. At the next game at home the Mustangs came thru with a 14-11 victory over the Cimarron Bluejays. In the playoffs the Mus- tangs were defeated by the Fowler Goldbugs by a score of 6-10. The Mustangs rounded out their football season at home by defeating Minneola 46-6. John Venard (33) shown making one of his yard gaining runs cutting up the middle behind the blocking of Brian Headrick, Brett Bromwell (42), and Jerry Cox (68). The Mustangs had an average 4.2 yd. per rush for the 1976 football season. John not only run the ball for the Mustangs, he played on important role for the defense. He led the Mustangs team in tackles with 20 unassisted and 148 assisted. Brian Headrick (11) getting ready to put the move on a Fowler Goldbug. Brian was one of the reasons why the Mustangs could pass. Brian had a 41% completion rate on passes. The Mustangs averaged 73. 5 passing yds. per game. The Mustangs also averaged a 15.4 yd. per catch. David Brown (15) shown putting one of many fine defensive efforts to stop a Meade Buffalo ball carrier, Darin Headrick (10) with an assist. David was the 6th leader on the Mustang defense. Tom Sheldon (39) and Brett Bromwell (42) get ready to put a stop on a Fowler Goldbug in the Mustangs 6-10 loss. Tom Sheldon was 2nd leader with 13 unassisted and 69 assisted tackles for the Mustangs. Brett Bromwell was 8th leader in tackles for the Mustangs with 11 unassisted 40 assisted. 20 Brian Headrick (11) showing the type of defense the Mustangs had. The Mustang defense held their opponents to a 17. 2 yd. gain per catch. Brownie Lee is a versatile member of the Mustang squad, going both ways, offense and Team defense is a strong point on Coach Ayers team as SHOWN IN and defense and the PAT man. ABOVE: Layne Angell goes all out for a lay-up in the final game of SubState. Unfortunately the Mustangs faltered and the game went to Plainsville 64-55. Just the night before Layne Angell's last second shot gave the Mustangs the win over Victoria, 62-60. Layne had an average of 10.7 points per game. The Spirited Mustangs rounded up their 1976-1977 Season with a 22 win, 2 loss record and the Sub-State Runner Up crown. Out of the Mustangs 5 starters, 3 of them were jun- iors along with an alternating sophomore. With these lettermen returning, next year's season will prove to be exciting. 24 UPPER LEFT: Merlin Holmes goes up for a lay-up in the Greenburg game. The Mustangs beat the Rangers 67-42. Merlin was 5th leading scorer for the Mustangs ABOVE: Darin Headrick laid this one up for a good 2 point basket against the Coldwater Eagles. The Mus- tangs won with a score of 72-55. ABOVE: Larry Knott shoots for a possible two points in the Montezuma game. 26 Headrick And Relay Take Third At State Brian Headrick came off of two gold medals at the Jetmore regional to pick up two bronzes at the State meet. Brian was a consistant winner throughout the season. The Medley relay team of Stuart Holmes, Barry Priest, Merlin Holmes, and Brian Headrick also took third place at the state meet. a ip Ron Eakes saved his best effort for the regional of his senior year. Ron ran a 2:04.4 to take fourth, just missing a trip to state. Layne Angell qualified for the state meet with a second place medal and a 6 foot jump at regionals. Gary Schmidt, a pole vaulter, started as a runner at the end of the track season. The Mustang squad had a very good year with 3 second place trophies, 3 third place trophies and a fourth. 28 Six Man Wins First In League SWH repeated as league champs with the six-man team taking first. The four-man team of Gilford Lubbers, Jeff Baier, Jamie Richardson and Brownie Lee took first while the two man team of Aven Knott and Brett Brom- well took third. Knott and Bromwell moved on the regional to qualify for the state tourney by taking third. The two man team won one second place and 4 third places throughout the year. Jennifer Baier, Barbie McCullom, Natalie Tilford, Neola Weaver, Asst. Coach Pat Rains. The Southwestern Heights girl's Spirited Mustang bas- ketball team finished the season with a 7-10 record. Their League record was 4-5. The Junior Varsity wound up the year with a League record of 5-6. These girls showed tremendous hustle and spirit all through the sea - son. The basketball team is losing its two very fine coaches and wishes them the best. The Mustang 1976-1977 Honors were as follows: Team Captain-Ann Fruechting, Best Hustler-Cheryl Rickers, Best Defensive Player-Denice Bromwell, and Most Inspi- rational Player-Donna Bohannon. These honors were vot- ed on by the other players. Denice Bromwell was also se- lected to the All-Iroquois Team. RIGHT: Denice Bromwell led the team with 17.7 re- bounds and 15 points per game. BELOW: Ann Fruechting helped the team with an average of 10.4 rebounds per game. Three relays finished fifth with the mile relay running a 4:16.11. Members of the team were Shari Angell, Debbie Den- ton, Cheryl Rickers and Rhonda Jacobs. The 440 relay team, Barbie McCollum, Lori Jacobs, Cheryl Rickers, and Rhonda Jacobs, turned in a 52:44. 34 Barbie McCollum turned in a career best of 15.53 in the regional hurdles to pick up a fifth place. Cheryl Rickers, Lori Jacobs, Tammy Ja- cobs and Margene Weihe running as the 880 relay team turned in a time of 1:52. 2. 35 ABOVE FRONT ROW: Jennifer Baier, Neola Weaver, Gayle Walker, Ann Donahue, Lorraine Rudolph, Dana Kidder Connie Sherer. She was given the Royal robe by the returning queen, Nancy Utz. The crowning ceremonies were ended by the fitting theme of ’’Today's the Day.' 38 39 Come Touch The Sun Come Touch the Sun was the theme of the 1976-77 basketball homecoming. Shari Angell made it her day when she was crowned by her escort. Merlin Holmes. Joining in the festivities were Ann Fruechting and her escort Brian Headrick, and Deanna Kane and her escort Ron Eakes. Crown bearer was Doug Kaberlein and the flower girl was Traci Davis.
