MESSERSMITH To those who have ties with The Southwestern Graduate School of Banking, the dedication of this issue of the Yearbook to the Chairman of the Department of Physical Education at SMU will be con- sidered natural and overdue recognition. Swigsbie is designed to benefit the whole man. Its curriculum emphasizes a broad range of bank- related academic subiects, but it also concentrates on a physical fitness through a complete intramural athletic program. The scope of the program runs from swimming to volleyball, from logging to soft- ball, and from bowling to tennis. For the past 12 years since the School's inception, its sports activities have been guided by Dr. Lloyd L. Messersmith. Under his supervision sports have become as much a part of Swigsbie as economic lectures or case problems. Participation in sports is looked forward to by returning students, year after year. Dr. Messersmith is eminently well-qualified to direct any school's physical education program. Academ- ically, he received his BA degree from De Pauw University in 1928, his MA from Columbia University in 1932, and his Ed.D. from Indiana University in 1942. Prior to ioining the SMU staff in 1945, he served as coach and physical education instructor for 15 years at his alma mater, De Pauw University. During the coming year, Dr. Messersmith will retire from SMU and relinquish his position with Swigsbie. His leadership will be missed by all who attend the School, but it has been appreciated by the hundreds who have already come under his influence. He takes with him the best wishes of bankers throughout the country. High Wifh lT7f1erei SwiQS4bLfG3,'SWigiEiEi5j'.'
