The men don't have to be strangled by ties, or the women hampered by dresses. Also, teachers are no longer such enemies as they have been classified throughout centuries. There is an easier rapport established between faculty and students that we hope continues in the future. There is one man though that never had this problem and probably never will. He’s at the top of the totem pole when it comes to giving advice and helping others. ''Caring’”’ is his middle name. He goes way beyond the call of duty when any problems arise among the students. Students of Southwestern Technical Institute have always looked up to him with respect. He’s never too busy to give you a pat on the back or utter a kind word which really shows that he’s an extraordinary man. He has done a lot for the students at STI and always will. He is the director of Student Services and he makes the students and all their problems his life. It is with great pleasure that the Annual Staff and students of STI dedicate the 1979 OPEN DOOR to Mr. Richard O. Wilson. 4 Dedication APPRECIATION We, the Annual Staff of the 1979 Open Door, wish to express our sincere thanks and appre- ciation to Mr. John W. Ashe. He is the business manager at Southwestern Technical Institute. Without his time, patience, and co-operation, the annual would have gotten off to a bad start. Thank you, Mr. Ashe, for helping us to the finish line. Appreciation 5 ADMINISTRATION ‘ : 2 q | ) Edward E. This festive day was known as Spring Activity Day Sponsored by the SGA. Everyone seemed to be having a jolly ole time whether engaged in volleyball, softball, tennis, basketball, or even hide-n-seek. (That’s when a girl hid behind a bush and hoped that a boy would find her.) There was even good music supplied by the Bridge Sound Company to stimulate those good feelings you were already having. The day ended around 4:00 and everyone went their separate ways. Happenings 9 10 Happenings SUMMER ACTIVITY DAY Happenings 11 12 Happenings Summer Activity Day was held on August 30, 1978 at Glenville Lake. Students were brown-bagging all over the place on this day as they were required to bring a bagged lunch. SGA provided big, juicy wa- termelons and drinks (non-intoxicating). Many people participated in sports such as volleyball, softball, horseshoes, and canoeing. Everyone had a blast. The day ended around 4:00 p.m. ORIENTATION DAY Happenings 13 14 Orientation Day is a journey into the world of informa- tive facts and ideas and meeting new faces. Orientation Day was held on October 2 in the multipurpose room during the hours from nine to four. For the new stu- dents, registering for classes is nothing but confusion, filling out papers, hoping no one notices that you’re in the CARPENTRY line when you’re supposed to be in the FOOD SERVICES line, and crying when you see how long the line is for paying your fees. Instructed faculty and students are present to acquaint new students with their new surroundings and help them kick off to a good start. The students go home feeling much better about STI than when they first arrived. o 16 Participation ANNUAL STAFF John Riley, Advisor Richard Godfrey, Co-advisor Participation 17 18 Participation Mike Mcinturff. The paper before me is like a virgin vessel; My thoughts all flee as | prepare to wrestle The Gordian knot that | call my mind. But who said the truth would be simple to find? You dance so well and are admired by many, Yet when it comes to freedom you have little if any. You build your castles on eroding foundations, So quickly forgetting your past tribulations. Such is the nature of your earthly existence — You run from your love and you bury your innocence. How can you tell me that you know all the answers When you jerk your emotions like marionette dancers? Don’t get me wrong — your love is still there. Whole and intact — the rules are quite fair. From any point you can begin anew — Thru all your dark veins the light will shine thru. If only you allow it and step out of the way, The Riddle will Rhyme and the Piper will Play.
