In 1962, the mound was moved to its present location there picturedj while Dar- beth Fine Arts Complex now stands at the ori- ginal site. At the time of the re-dedication of the mound, Dean C. Robert Haywood added a humorous postscript to Dean Allen's address, and Dean Haywood's postscript is read at the Mound Con- vocation held each fall. Part of the ceremony surrounding the mound is a procession around campus as well as other traditions which are further expounded upon during the ceremony. Upper Left: The mound is still growing! NEW DIVISION F H, .. .Q OF MANAGEMENT CIENCE BEGI Southwestern College. has expanded its curriculum this year by adding a new division. Classes under the Division of Management Science began March 1 at centers in Overland Park and Wichita. ELBA Systems Corporation has deve- loped courses in the areas of sales and marketing which are being used by Southwestern. Dr. Bames, SC instruc- tor, teaches these classes in Wichita, and there are two other instructors in the Overland Park center. Presently, there are about 50 students at the Wi- chita center and 100 students in Over- land Park. These students spend 6 to 8 hours once a week in classes. The pro- gram is actually a 30-hour program to be completed over a 10-month period. When asked about the program, Dr. Bames commented, K'There has been quite a bit of enthusiasm shown by the students for the new program. Present figures indicate the possibility of 600 + students participating in this newest division of Southwestern College within the next year. Led by Mr. Alfredo Rodriguez, Jose Gorges Ca citizen of Perul, Mark Gilbreath, and Richard Hamilton spent nearly a month in Lima and other areas of Peru studying the people, culture, and geography of the country. By immersing themselves in the Peruvian society the students were able to get a good introduction to the ways of life of the people. Sr. Rodriguez pursued further studies of Peruvian society, interviewing a number of people in different economic and social classes. Although a month is too short a time to get more than an introduction to another culture, the people going to Peru leamed a great deal from their experience. I 65 MOUNDBUILDER 1975 U f X N-N VW' -L. Bluegrass Style For three days in September, the Winfield Fairgrounds hosted the Walnut Valley Bluegrass Festival and Third Annual Flat- Picking Championship. The weekend of September 20-22 brought a variety of craft exhibitors and musical participants as well as spectators from all over the United States. Public appro- val last year extended the event to three days and next year, who knows? The grandstand was filled with listeners, of whom many filled the local campgrounds. Among the performers were Doc and Merle Watson, Dan Crary, Norman Blake and Jimmy Driftwood. If the past three years are any indication, the 1975 Bluegrass Festival is one you sure don't want to miss. 68 'Wi' 599 C-fgctills E 5 5 'Z 1 : h 4' 3 ir - mh H 'K m h, V A' '- -f f' , ' 5i4 '4'l 'L Wk N A . , -'iS'f's 1? 1'f2tfJf'f F A .t v . sums 5 -if .. . img x X 3, . vii swf - -Mk I ,W Q ,, 4 N .. fs 52 f 1 , A al V .. 4. 1- if L W . . . fl q . It was a happy day for Melinda Harmon as she was crowned homecoming queen. Wallingford Hall not only submitted the winning queen candidate, but also the winning dorm de- corations and float. The most imaginative float was probably that submitted by the class of '77, as pictured. At the game, the enthusiastic crowd was prompted by a yell contest which was won by the Thetas. Other members of the court included Saundra Beck, Joyce Cockrum, JoLynn Skaggs, Lori Alexander, Sue Richardson and Robin Tietze, After the game, the stu- dents were entertained by the music of Stan Kenton and his band. CR N L BCFF CHOIR On February 6, the Cultural Arts Department in cooper- ation with Walton Music Corporation and Kolu Produc- tions, Inc. brought to Southwestern the Norman Luboff Choir. The choir sang sacred, secular, popular songs, folk- songs, folk hymns and spirituals. One of the most unusual, yet best received songs was one written by Norman Luboff entitled Much Ado About Nothing which consisted of short sayings put to music. An example was, Early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, wise and bor- ing! It was indeed a treat for all who attended. 72 DA I H GY TE Probably one of the most unusual, yet more enjoyable events brought to us dur- ing the 1974-75 year was the Danish Gym Team. On November 20, the Cultural Arts Department brought this group of 24 young men and women to our campus. They performed folk dances, exercises, warm-up routines and gymnastics. The team was well-received by a full crowd of Southwestem students and community patrons. A CHRISTMAS C ROL, CROOGE The second Christmas play was A Christmas Carol or Scrooge . Barbershop quar- tets, Boogie-Woogie girls, and a variety of singers and speakers entertained the audience. 80 KI The King Spice dance was sponsored February 14 by Gamma Omicron. This, the only formal dance ofthe year, not only gave the women of this school a chance to ask the men for a date, but gave them a chance to dress up. Jay Wetterhus was crowned king to preside over the dance. Left To Right, the other members of the court were Tim Webb, Gene Snyder, Terry Rhea, Ken Goyen, Hank Collins and Peter Allegre. There was plenty of fun for everyone, including those like Chris Cornetti who decorated and Carla Harris and Ben Zuk who attended the dance. z ri Q,-ts K 9 is, Uv ' f---f ..1 ::i ? Spon- sor for 1974-75 was Mary Carol Spears. With a motto like A Woman's Place is in the World , the girls had no problem applying it to meetings. Programs ranged from the LaMaze method of birth to using the metric system and how to win baking contests. The king spice dance was the only money-making project this year. Everyone worked toward success and excitement added to the enjoyment of the dance. Nominations were received from campus organizations and a general election was held. Jay Wetterhus was crowned King Spice. Senior farewells went to Karen McDaniel, Diana May, Gloria Daniels and Joyce Cockrum at the spring picnic. Six seniors graduate from this year's squad and they include Alan Nation, an offensive tackle, Clayton Butler, offensive tackle, Jeff Fela, split receiver, Vic Mojica, Fullback, Larry Gillen, safety and Pat Murphy, cornerback. Several Builders received honors this fall. The team's awards as voted by the squad went to Alan Nation, outstanding blocker, Mike McCarthy, top defensive player, and Todd Dvorak, most valuable player. All KCAC selections were Mike McCoy, halfback - 1st team choice, Todd Dvorak, defensive end - 1st team, Jeff Fela, split end, honorable mention, Alan Nation, offensive tackle, honorable mention. Mike McCoy was also selected to the All-District Ten team and received NAIA all-American, honorable mention. Mike McCoy was leading rusher with 914 yards on 142 carries. Jeff Fela was leading receiver with 23 catches with 295 yards. Ben Zuk had 55 completions on 138 attempts for 730 yards to rank as top passer. On Sept. 21 the Builders traveled to Ottawa for their season opener. They led 7 -0 at half, 14-7 at the end of the 3rd quarter and in the final quarter Builder turnovers along with Ottawa's Dick Dimunico's outstanding passing, fell to the Braves 14-30. The next game was the conference opener against Friends Falcons. The Builders fell to the powerful Falcons 14-0. Southwestem then traveled to Newton for their battle with the Bethel Threshers and 7 turnovers led to a 17-7 defeat. Homecoming with Tabor was the next battle and Southwestern got on the track with a 21-10 victory sparked by McCoy's rushing and a Zuk to Shanklin bomb. A Homecoming crowd, though thinned out by a 2nd half downpour, went away happy about the lst Builder victory of the season. McCoy's efforts eamed him the AP Kansas Small College Player of the Week Award. Next week they traveled to Sterling and the Builders came away with an 18-0 shut out as the defense was outstanding. McPherson was the next foe and a 63-yard dash by McCoy in the 3rd quarter was the only score as the Builders came away with a hard fought 7 -0 win to even the record at 3-3. On Nov. 2, Southwestern traveled to Dodge City to meet preseason favorite, St. Mary's of the Plains in their homecoming. They came away with a hard-fought 19-14 win sparked again by McCoys running and noseguard Hank Collin's defensive efforts. The Topeka Junior was in on 27 tackles and tailback McCoy scored three times. Bethany college traveled to Sonner Stadium and SC defeated the tough Swedes 13-7 knocking them out of the title race. A tough defense and a key Zuk to Fela pass keyed the win. The last game of the season was at Salina against the Coyotes of Kansas Wesleyan and Wesleyan's potent Wishbone offense was too much for the Builders to handle as SC's winning streak was stopped at 5 by a score of 21-34. The season ending loss to Wesleyan dampened a great comeback which saw a dismal 0-3 start turned around by 5 consecutive wins. Although 6 Seniors will be sorely missed, with 18 of 22 starters returning for next year the outlook is bright and SC should battle for the title in 1975-76. 104 L L KA l it L Lf, 3 WX.-3 ,Q l if? The overall win-loss record was 12 and 10. One of the most exciting games of this '74-'75 season would have to be the big win over Fort Hays State College on their home court just before the Builders went home for Christmas vacation. This season saw S.C. playing games of close win and loss margins throughout the entire season. In only one contest was the team really never in contention. That game was the first conference game against KCAC champions Friends University. Evidence of the close contests this year can be seen by the fact that of the 22 games played, 15 were decided by 10 or fewer points. This season saw two time All KCAC Terry Rhea rewrite the S.C. record books in the scoring department. The 6'4 senior from Medicine Lodgeled all players in the state in scoring with a 24.1 average. For his efforts, he was elected to the NAIA district 10 team and made the NAIA All-American team with honorable mention honors. Other seniors graduating this year are 6'8 Ken Goyen, 6'0 guard Craig Dewell, 6'0 guard Russ Gilmore and 6'3 forward Allen Brennan. On May 18, the annual commencement exercises were held at their traditional site eSonner' Stadium. In the rays of the setting sun, seniors and their families and friends listened to the offerings of various speakers and the Southwestern band. Honorary degrees were confered to several persons in the course of the ceremony. Bruce Cutler, WSU professor and poet, and David McGuire, father of SC senior Susan McGuire, were among those awarded. At the close of the evening, Warren Wooldridge, above pictured, led the crowd in a singing of the alma mater. W .nf QP...-5: ,,,, . .5 XE if Y 9 - 0 W 135 136 .,....
