To All Southwestern Students: On March 23, l885, Southwest Kansas Con- ference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, by resolution ordered the establishmentofa college within its bounds. A less fortunate time for undertaking an adxienture in higher education could hardly be found. The crippling conser- vatism ot' the Gospel of Wealth heidthe country in a cultural strait-iacket, a paralyzing busi- ness recession was less than a year old, labor lunrest culminating in the bloody Hayma riots added to the economic deterioration and the agrarian revolt was in its First feeble stages of protest. Yet the men saw educational pos- sibilities on the verge of maturity. Conceived their venture in terms of establishing an institu- tion For fitting new leaders for a new age. America in mid-twentieth century cannot survive without leadership able to cope with the technological sophistication of the space age, the subtleties of modern history and the impact ofa world in revolt against the past. South- western views with pride seVenty-five years of proven service, accepts with vital concern its contemporary role, and expectantiy seeks the challenge of the future. We of the college, believe we have in our Builders of 1960, the new man -- the new leader who will iustify the aspirations of our Founding fathers. DR. ROBERT HAYWOOD Dean

DR. c. ORVILLE STROHI1 t t To All Southwestern Students: Through the years I have watched you climb the 77 --- stand before the Mound with the wind blowing in your face --- looking outover the great Walnut Valley with stars in your eyes and dreams in your hearts. Slowly but surely the real meaning of the Builder Spirit comes into focus and you catch a vision and are inspired. Being o Builder is like climbing a hill. Asyou ascend the hill, you are able more and more togondf-egl the great things that have been thought ondiidond done and believed and created. From this vision of the post and from the comprehensive view of God's universe, you are able to plot your own footsteps For the future. The next decade holds as great a challenge as any ten years in man's existence. It is yourstOr the asking! While you have been here, you have gather- ed sticks and lighted a Fire; and now you who are seniors leave it burning to warm the hearts and guide the footsteps of others. There are few earthly things more splendid than the Builder Spirit. HoiI Alma Mater! DR. C. ORVILLE STROHL President
