With the help cf Lars Berg, our exchange stu- dent from Norway, and Laurie Seltz, the club President, great things are happening. Money is being raised to send a South- western student abroad in 1972. This project is a joint effort with the adult AFS committee. Lars' home is Kongsvinger, Norway and he is the guest of the Robert Booteys. The Hollender family, mistaken, for spies, takes refuge in an American Embassy. From then on, the plot includes a secretary who thinks she is the Wright Brothers, a tricky priest, a clumsy Ambassador's son, and a caterer from New Jersey. The Trojan players fared well despite the onset of Iaryngitis the day before opening. With the many talents of the actors and a quart of Iisterine, the zany plot, was well received. The vast experience of the new director Mrs. Schroom made this years comedy one of the best. ORGANIZATIO ,ww gzgkks 4 rg ix gh ag1,,W': .Lf l . , X , ,mm A- ' ,,, . K A A,,. ,M v - l V N ,, X si . At each meeting plans are made to have a native German or some- one who has traveled to a Ger- man speaking country come and tell about their trip. So far this year Tim Fargo and Patty Mac- Donald have come to tell us about their trips to Germany. The major fund raising activities of the year were the sale of German Christmas candles. At Christmas, a party was held with many native Germans as guests. The money made goes towards a scholarship to be given to the senior who has made the great- est achievement in German. This will also goto buy gifts for other students who have made outstanding achievements. German Club: Row 1: C. Lillestedt, S. Kerli, T. Fisk, G, White, B. Wittermore. Row 2: B. Luce, P. Nobbs, P. Officers of the year were Tina Stuart, president: Kris Cole, vice- president: Shelley Frederick, secretary: and Karl Liliestedt, treasurer. It has been four years since we have been able to claim this but once again FTA proudly boasts the membership of the males. Each month the members are given the privilege of going to the Middle and grade schools to teach. All of our money making projects were aimed at the goal of giving a scholarship to the most promising future teacher. We held our annual Tea for the grade school teachers and adhered with tradition by closing the year with our Banquet. Cindy Crandall makes a big hit with her students. Row I: K. Pizella, C. The Trojan The Trojan, the school paper is printed monthly for the en- joyment of the students, faculty and administration at Southwestern. This year, a lot of new things were tried on the paper. A gossip column, poetry, and artwork were added, making for a longer, funnier, and more interesting paper. The hardworking editors and their staff could be seen working diligently at the James Prendergast Library, after school and before school, putting together a professional paper. The success of The Trojan is measured by the great anticipation of the day the copies are passed out. Trojan Staff: Row 1: R. Miraglia, '.. We L Mr. Robie doles out evidence to a debater. Southwestern has every rea- son to be proud of it's excellent debate and speech team. After winning the Regional Sweep- stakes Trophy at Amherst last year, they have come back to another successful season. Varsity debaters are David Campbell, Kris Cole, Tina Stuart, Kathy McDonnell, and Ken Garey. This year's topic is the judicial system. The Debate Team not only debates, but enters speech tour- naments in original oratory, dra- matic interpretation, extempora- neous speaking, and political oratory. Much of the teams suc- cess is due to their great coach, Mr. Robie. Our editors gleaned many ideas for the book through exchanges with representatives of the thirty area schools. Concepts of the yearbook as a graphic medium were stressed. Spirit ran high as we strived under the leadership of Mr. Bowman, and never faltered despite much fiery controversy. ln grueling work sessions, we came to know the true meaning of the words layout and deadline , We have sought the support of the community by including adver- tisements in our book. Along with marching at all the football games, they performed at many concerts. In the spring they com- peted at both the Springville and Gorham music festivals. The band played host to the Ohio State University while they were on their way to Carnegie Hall, in New York City. To complete the year, the Trojan Band took their annual concert tour and this year's destination was Washing- ton, D.C. This year's A Cappella Choir has taken a different approach from previous years. Under the direction of Mr. Schaufelberger, in his first year here, the con- centration has been on the ex- ercising of musical skills. The aim throughout the year was toward a good performance atcompetition. The accompanist was Brenda Klenck, whose dedication and patience ended in better pitch. During the year, we held Christ- mas concerts for the Optimist Club, parents, and a concert for our fellow students. lt was quite a pleasant surprise when the stu- dent body enthusiastically applauded and thoroughly en- joyed the assembly. There were many favorable remarks about our performance. We held a Spring Concert, competition recital, and we sang for Baccalaureate. 4 I . Z Y ' -- Y if fig G Q AZT J fj . , F 2 2 2 , CJ AL V 1. But as the season progressed, we were blessed with quality instead of quantity. With returning Iettermen Jay Gutknecht, Jeff MacCubbin, Kurt Oberhofer, and Co-Captains Mark Swanson and Jerry Marra. we had an excellent core from which to build a winner. Sophomore Brian Hull and Juniors Kelly Griffin and Brian O'Connor rounded out the main point winners for SWCS. After giving Fredonia its 1st loss to league competition in 6 years, the team went on to win 7 triangular meets and finish 2nd twice. The team finished 2nd in the County with Brian Hull receiving a trophy for placing 2nd. In the Sectional A meet the Trojans placed 2nd, again to Fredonia for the best finish ever. They also placed 3rd in the A- AA division to see which team went to the state meet. This also was their best ever finish. Jerry Marra became the 1st boy Coach Priester ever had to go to the State meet where he placed 74th out of 126. Coach Priester 'swmkk Coach Priester bv ,til 65 Varsity Football: Flow 1: C. First- year head coach Dan Barren started the season with an inexperienced team and did a great job! When asked about this year's team he said l'm extremely happy with the accomplishments of the '71 Tro- jans, when one considers there was only two lettermen returning from our 1970 squad. He felt that our season was really something to boast about. We won handily in our opening game against Kane with Larson's completion of fifteen out of nineteen passes. We defeated our arch rival Falconer. We came from behind twice in the second half to win over Wellsville and Falconer during the season. We upset a good Dunkirk team for the first time in five seasons and won three out of our last four games. ln the final two games of the season, even after a spotty defensive performance during the season, Southwestern held Wellsville and Iroquois to a combined total offense of 222 yards which is an average of only 111 yards each! Coach Barren was very happy with this year's senior players. Co-captain Pete Bosco, tackle: Pat Sanders, end: and co- captain John Wright, middle guard: all had great seasons defensively. Guy Lombardo, offensive guard, and co- captain John Kost both did commendable jobs blocking. Bob Hall led the team in pass receptions. Chuck Flichards, defensive tackle, and Mike Luce, playing intermittently at tight end and defensive guard, were also intensely important to this year's team. Dave Lewis, who was used mainly on the kick-off and punting units all year, did an outstanding job as defensive end against Iroquois. These seniors all deserve our congratulations! Mark Beckstrand, Art Guyer, and Steve Larson will be next year's varsity football captains. There are really too many factors to predict whether or not we will be highly successful in the 1972 season. This will come soon enough, but Coach Barren is optimistic with 15 returning lettermen. Injuries to many of our varsity starters plagued this year's team. Also, Captain Greg Bridges could not wrestle until the second semester. Determination, and a lot of hard work helped them to end the season with a duel meet record of 8 wins and 5 losses. They exemplified the Pride, Sacrifice and Courage that they are so well noted tor. They never gave up! The Holiday and Class A, Section VI Sectional Wrestling Tournaments were both held at S.W.C.S. this year. Winners of the Holiday Tournament were Bob Moberg and Jeff Swan. In the Sectionals, Jeff also emerged a winner along with Greg Bridges. Greg shared the Most Outstanding Wrestler honors of the Sectional Meet with Mike Arnold of Pioneer. Jeff went on to win in the 122 weight class at the Inter-Sectionals with Greg placing second at 135. Jeff's victory in the Inter-Sectional Tournament earned him the honor to compete in the State Meet at Syracuse. ROW 12 Jim Hefiley. Varsity Basketball team slash records The 71-72 Varsity Basketball Team had a successful season of thirteen wins and six losses, and second place in the league with a league record of seven wins and three losses. The basketball team is already looking forward to next year in hopes of another winning season. This goal seems quite likely since four of the starting five are returning for another year. Near the end of the season the Trojans had their most out- standing victory. This was the win over Fredonia who was then un- defeated. This memorable game was played before a packed house. These adults are always ready to cheer the athletes on and work behind the scenes to make the competitions run smoothly. As in years past, the Boosters spon- sored a banquet at the year's end to honor our Trojan athletes. To make this event bigger and better than any before, the Sports Boosters sold cushions at football games and wrestling matches, and sold refreshments to the mobs of hungry spectators at the wrestling sectionals. At the ban- quet, the Boosters presented the Varsity Trojans with Trojan head trophies as a token of their pride in the effort put forth by these students in their various sports activities. We feel our first year in the high school is very important in teaching us cooperation within our own class and with the others, to work and to have fun together. We feel that we have started off to a great year, and we are eagerly looking forward to our following years at Southwestern. We hope it will be a year to remember and as we go ever forward, we are sure our spirit and pride that we have for our school will grow with us and we will, throughout our years here and beyond, always uphold the great name of Southwestern.
