The Lower House is open to anyone interested enoughto attend, whilethe Upper House still carries out the or- ganizational tasks which some- one has to do. Projects initiated for the benefit of all were: the collection of food and money for the poor, revival of the Student- Faculty Association, supervision of dances, and purchase of a stereo system especially for study hall proctors. The council lost its store, the major source of both income and recognition. But Peter has served well in both departments. mW,:.w.,.wwy.ewMwwnvBLmm -rs... .,t.. V W s,,,,mm. Seated: B. Battler, M. Our very own popcorn machine turned out to be a real successg never failing to rake in profits and hold up customers. We operated on the philosophy that lf you get it to them fast and hot, they won't notice the taste. Our efforts payed off, as was evidenced by our nightly refrigerator of cold cash. The program is a com- munity effort which sponsors a student from abroad to study at SW. The student will arrive in the fall of 1971. The lay commit- tee has been formed to screen applicant families. In the summer of 1972 we will send our first American abroad. We are proud of our community support. Homecoming 1970 Cllmaxing our football season was the annual Homecoming Weekend, October 16 and 17. Friday night during half time of the Salamanca game, the queen and her court were crowned. As is Southwestern's tradition, it was cold and muddy on the football fieldg but who notices that with all those beautiful girls? Saturday night was spent ln the Park with music by The Saints . Formality was lost as everyone rocked out among the bridges and fountains. In their production of The Pajama Game , the Class of '71 displayed an abundance of both ingredients for success, talent and enthusiasm. The story re- volved around a labor dispute at the Sleep-tite pajama factory. Complications arose when the chairman of the Grievance Com- mittee, played by Debbie Nowell, found herself in love with the management, in the person of Dave Backus. Highlights of the show were such songs as Her- nando's Hideaway , l'm not at All in Love and Hey There . In memorable roles were: Sam Mason as the efficiency expert, Jody Freed, and Diane Brevoort as secretariesg and Jim Wolin- sky as the thrifty ownerg along with an excellent chorus of workers. Undertaking a full-scale mu- sical is no small task, and the entire cast did an excellent job under the direction of Mr. Mach- Ian and Debbie Kellogg. The musical assistance of Mrs. Machlan, combined with Cathy Steg's accompaniment all helped to make Pajama Game a success. Steam Heat I' 5 iii .N ' Q -- , gf . .L Qlza. :QQQ Y , ,L -, Vw . . Big Tillie The first production of this year's Trojan Playhouse was a comedy, Strange Bed Fellows. Though the action was set in the l89O's, the theme had very current appeal. This tale of the Hdomineering female of the Suffrage movement has its coun- terpart in our modern Woman's Lib. Action revolved around both sides of a political issue. Don Lynn and JoAnn Hendrick- son played the newlyweds, ha- rassed by a bellowing father, Sam Mason. The fast paced ac- tion and relevent dialogue made the play a success. Rome wasn't built in a day. Would you believe two? Do as the Romans do? r4'mb -W Seranades on the Plaza. The evening of June 6th the Juniors presented Al-de- Lag an evening on the Fto- man plaza. The setting was perfect from billowy skies to horse drawn chariot. At midnight our royalty was coronated in a pillar flanked temple. Neptune watched as the beautiful couples drank from a flowing fountain and danced to the music of The Elevator. Class Of 72 Now the Junior Class of Southwestern, the class of '72, is in what is considered the most important, most interesting, and most active year of high school. Those of us college bound have our college en- trance exams, while others will be participating in BOCES. Many of our members have gone out for the various varsity squads. It is our most signifi- cant year as individuals but also is our most important as a class. After two years in this school, we have firmly established our- selves as a class of great po- tential, in raising class funds, in school spirit, and in having fun. This is the year we prove our real talent and spirit with such projects as the Prom, Inter- class Games and Pep Week. We must show our unity and spirit through our activities. The class of '72 will prove to be a class that can be counted on for originality, responsibility and foremost, for an undying pride in its class, its teams and in SWCS. Homeroom 134: Row 1: P. Before the first week of practice, considering the pos- sible number of returnees, and the fact that we lost three se- niors and one returning letter- man, I thought we might have an average season-record wise C50-509. We probably would finish around 5th in the county meet. Throughout the season each individual continued to lower their times while losing only to Fredonia in triangular and quad- rangular meets. In nine league meets, they were first seven times and second only twice. They placed second at the Pine Valley open meet, and finished the season with their highest finishes ever at the County- 2nd and Sectionals-3rd. The J.V.'s beat Fredonia at the Sec- tionals for the first time in South- western's history. Squad From the standpoint of victories, the 1970 J.V. baseball season could not be con- sidered a successful one. With Art Guyer, Kerry Kellogg, and Gary Carlson moving up to the Varsity Squad, the J.V. pitching staff was worn thin, Doug Brink and Mark Hol- comb carrying the load. The season did, however, give valuable playing experience to many underclassmen. This experience should benefit our Varsity in seasons to come. It is the hope of Mr. Gustavson and Mr. Federes that these boys will form the nucleus of a team which will return a winning base- ball tradition to Southwestern. Varsity Track: Row 1: T. Hillard, T. Eugene Munson, did extremely well in league competition, with an overall record of 13 wins, one loss, and one tie. The team took the Section Six Champs for the first time in school history. Dur- ing the 1970 season they were the A, AA, and AAA Champs. ln the Chautauqua County Golf League they had an overall average of 8-O-1. It proved to be a long day July 20, 21, 1970 but it was worth it for three golfers from Southwestern Central. Tom Johnson had to go four extra holes before he could join Randy Swanson and Joe Johnson for the honor of representing New York State at the Pro-Am Youth Tournament, held in Oklahoma City on August 14-18. The Pro-Am Tournament brings to- gether the best young golfers from all states. There is a 36 hole qualification match and those who qualify for the last two days of the tournament get a chance to play with a professional golfer. Randy and Tom failed to make the finals but Joe's consistency paid off. Joe had the pleasure of playing with Julius Boros and Bobby Nicolls the last two days of the tournament. The prowess of these three fine golfers and their conduct not only made Southwestern proud of them, but the State of New York, the county and local area received favorable com- ments concerning these three young men. The weapons of the sport. Tennis Team 1970 It was a rebuilding year for the Tennis Team of 1970 as graduation left only two starters.
