STOW LAK EWOOD CELORON W BEMUS POINT nz JAMEsTowN 1959 CE TRALIA Twelfth Edition by Students of Southwestern Central School School District of Busti, Celoron, Lakewood, ond West Ellicott Foreword From the windows of Southwestern Central High School one can see beautiful Chautauqua Lake and the many boats that skim across its blue expanse. With this in mind, the staff of the I959 Centralion have chosen SAIL- ING TO SUCCESS THROUGH SOUTHWESTERN as the theme of this book. As you read the pages of this logbook of your' 58-59 year at Southwestern, we hope that you will recall memories of your classes, of your extracurrricular activities, of the many valuable friendships you have made. If you have ac- quired a store of practical knowledge, if you have gained something in leadership, if you have learned a sense of fair play, you have begun a successful voyage. When you look out at the boats on the lake, compare them to yourself. The boat that is skimming along with sails set to the wind may be compared to the student that sails through school very easily. The boat that is strug- gling against the wind trying to reach port may be compared to the student who Struggles hard to obtain his education. Chart your course with boat well-manned, with sails set high, with a definite destination in sight, so the latter part of your journey may be on a calm sea fanned by gentle zephyrs. We hope, as you read the pages of this logbook, you will feel that you have had a rewarding experience in charting your course through South- WeSfel'I'I. ' 2 S 5 S S 5 5 k Ns 5 Q .ff 2. g Q Ks 5 K. . 'l'OWl'l. MRS. BERNICE WILLIAMS Teacher of English and Latin Leaving the teaching field after forty-five years of service is Miss Alice Jones. She has been a member of the Southwestern and Celoron facul- ty since l943, in which time everyone has come to know and admire her. Miss Jones attended two universities in pre- paring to enter the teaching profession. She re- ceived her Bachelor of Science degree from Syra- cuse University, and her Master of Arts from Columbia University. Before she came to the Southwestern district, she taught at several different schools, Ellion High School, Saratoga, Ithaca High School, rural school at Minerva, Ludloville, and Stoney Creek. Biology, Junior High School math and science as well as High School math have been taught by Miss Jones. She is very active in many organizations. Miss Jones is a member of the First Baptist Church of Jamestown where she belongs to the Service Class and the Women's Society. Some of the other organizations she belongs to are the King's Daugh- ters, College Club, Association of Math Teachers of New York State, and the Senior Citizens of America. We sincerely hope Miss Jones will always remember Southwestern with fondness as every- one who has ever known Miss Jones will always remember her and the wonderful work she has done in teaching us. Southwestern is losing one of her most re spected teachers this year. Mrs. Williams, who has been teachi-ng for thirty-two years, is retiring this year. She plans to travel during her retire Mrs. Williams, who many will remember as Mrs. Hotch, received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Allegheny College. She has taught English and Latin in several schools, East Mill Creek High School, Gridley High School, and Central High School, all in Erie, and summer school in Jamestown, New York. Mrs Mrs. Williams came to the Southwestern District in September of l927. Mrs. Williams has been very active in various clubs and -organizations. The Eastern Star and Women's College Club of Erie are among those to which she has belonged. ln l950, she was awarded a life membership in the Celoron P.T.A. Mrs Williams attends the First Baptist Church of James We are sorry to see Mrs. Williams leave, but we are hoping that she will enjoy her retirement Everyone, we are sure, will always remember and be proud to say that they were taught by Mrs Williams. MISS ALICE JONES Teacher of Junior High Mathematics MISS FLOY PARKER Former Librarian The Faculty and students of S.W.C.S. join in paying tribute to Miss Floy Parker of Cas- sadaga, New York who retired from active service in our school last June. Miss Parker has given more than half a century of untir- ing service to the schools of this state. We hope in this small way to show our ap- preciation for her helpful and untiring assistance and friend- ship to us while she was in our midst. Miss Parker is a graduate of Fredonia Normal School. She has a B.S. degree from Buffalo State Teachers College and a B.S. degree in Library Science from Genesee State Teachers College. Some of her year's service include rural schools, Stockton, Silver Creek and Dunkirk. She came to us in l935 and taught in Glidden School. Later she taught upper grades in Celoron. In l94O she became grade librarian in the Celoron school and later transferred to the high school. She also served as librarian in the newly organized Central High School. Miss Parker is admired by students and teachers for her individualism, her sincerity and her great desire to induce us to read, understand and appreciate good literature. Her first love was poetry and she seemed always to know lust what poem was needed to fit any occasion which might arise. For these things, we wish to extend our many thanks and to wish her happiness in her well earned years of retirement. To all my friends: Before I say good-bye, I wish to tell how much I have enjoyed this year I spent here and how grateful I am to all of you. I wish to thank my family, the Hendlers, with whom I have been very happy, the American Field Service, that made my stay here possible, all my teachers who have been so kind, and all of you at South- western, that have been friendly with me. Even if I did not have a chance to know all of you very well, I will never forget all the smiling people who said Hi to me on the first day of school, making me feel really at home. I'II always remember the wonderful time I had living in Lakewood and going to school at Southwestern. The schools in Brazil are quite different from the American ones, we go for five hours a day and take ten to twelve subjects a year, though we have each of them just two or three times a week. We have very few extra- curricular activities and sports at school. I really enjoyed participating in different clubs in this school, playing the role of a witch in our senior play, Macbeth, and going to the games. I don't think, like some people do, that school work is easy here and that the American stu- dents don't work hard. The American system of education is a wonderful one, you should be proud of it and always do your best to improve it. We never get to really know people until we live with them, do the same things as they do, and learn about their customs and traditions. That is what makes the American Field Service exchange program so great and so important. Now I feel that I know the United States quite well, and I think it is a wonderful country. As you know, I come from Brazil, a large, beautiful, sunny country in South America. Rio Am bassadors-To An ANGELA BRASIL American Field Service Exchange stu- dent from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1958-1959 de Janeiro, where my home is, is supposed to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world, with its hills on the edge of the Guanabara Bay, the modern buildi-ngs and parks, the palm trees and tropical flowers. I hope that some day you can come there to see me, and like my country as much as I like the United States. If you don't come, I would love to receive a letter from each of you, so l'II leave my ad- dress: Visconde de Piraja 571, Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro. GORDON PULS American Field Service Americans Abroad from our school to Mett- mann, Germany, Summer, 1958. Once again, thank you very much and good- bye, or as we say in Portuguese: Adeus. Angela Brasil In the spring of 1958, I was very fortunate to be chosen to rep- resent Southwestern in the American Field Service exchange stu- dent program. I spent a wonderful and richly rewarding summer with a host famiIy in Germa-ny. My famiIy consisted of my father Ernst Julius, my mother Elizabeth Julius, and my two brothers Rolf and Arnd. They were as fine a family as one could possibly find anywhere, and they took me many places, all very beautiful, some historical. During my stay with the Juliuses, I traveled through Switzerland, to the magnificent WorId's Fair at Brussels, Belgium, and to many parts of Germany, like the beautiful Black Forest, and the Rhi-ne River with its majestic cliff top castles. My knowledge and understanding broadened with every trip I took and every friend I made. That is what makes the AFS program so extremely worthwhile-the understanding gained by all the people it touches. I shall always be grateful to the American Field Service and its many volunteer helpers the world over that made this experience possible for me and many others. . , y , From Our chool MY TRIP Around the World in Eighty Days seemed so impossible when Jules Verne wrote the book by that name. Today a tenth of that time would not be required. We left Buffalo around I p.m. a-nd were scheduled to reach Los Angeles at 7:45 p.m. Pacific Time on The American Air Lines. The plane was heading into a strong wind and be- fore we reached Chicago our pilot announced that we would probably be hours late. On the Pan-American Air Lines we took off from Los Angeles on July first around 9 p.m., refuelled at Hawaii and Wake Island, crossed the Inter- national Date Line and arrived in Tokyo, Japan, July 3rd. Note that twenty-four hours were dropped from flying time going westward across that date line. We stopped for five hours in Hong Kong, China and for parts of three days or more in Bangkok, Thailand, Rangoon and Moul Meink, in Burma, and reached Calcutta, India on July I lth in the early evening. These dry statistics omit the exciting sight seeing! Mt. Fujiyama, The River Quay, the huge Sleeping Buddah were outstanding experiences along with many less noted sights. The Taj Mahal at Agra was omitted this time because I had seen it on a previous trip. Ma-ny of the trips around India were made by plane. The Indian Air Lines already use jet-propelled engines on many of their planes. The three-day trip to Darjeeling was made in less than twelve hours. Delhi has many more buildings - beautiful ones-than on that previous visit, twenty-six years ago. Railroad stations and service are greatly improved. Schools have increased in number and improved in equipment. Bicycles and motor vehicles have increased the traffic hazards that formerly were caused mainly by flocks of sheep and herds of cattle or goats. Even the temperature was higher. One newspaper claimed that the weather was the hottest on re- cord. Another was content to claim the hottest in fifty years. For three months the average temperature reported by the newspaper ranged, with few exceptions, between 950 and lO5o On our boat from Bombay to Naples the passenger list was largely Indian. Students, some married, and many bringing whole families were seeking to better their conditions in a foreign land. The trip through Europe was fascinating. In Italy the Cardinals of the World were as- sembling for the Conclave that elected Pope John XXIII. The Sistine chapel and other ad- joining areas were blocked off to visitors because the voting took place in that portion of the Who Traveled Around the World from July to December 1958 Vatican. ln spite of some cold fall weather we had a warm enough period to eat our Sunday dinner i-n Venice on the sidewalk in front of our hotel. The gondola rides on the Canals, a visit to Venetian Glass Factory, and adventure across the Bridge of Sighs were prized experiences. Switzerland weather hid the mountain snows of Zurich and the Jungfrau the day we adventured up that mountain from Interlaken but we had sun in Luzerne for an experience that was one of the highest of the high spots - a view of the Lion of Luzerne. The League of Nations Building in Geneva reminded us of the United Nations Building in New York City on a far smaller scale. Paris was all we anticipated both shopping and sight-seeing. At the Louvre we enjoyed originals in Sculpture and Painting and other works of art of which we had heard and studied all our lives. Changing the Guard at Buckingham Palace, visits to the Parliament Buildings, Westminster Abbey and a session of the House of Commons were thrilling, indeed. So also were Win'dsor Castle and Stratford-on-Avon. Four days from Le Harve to New York City on The United States, the fastest boat afloat brought us back to our own country in time for Thanksgiving. Truly we gave thanks with especial fervor for the many many incidents that made this a truly wonderful trip. J, f sl 1 i 71 si' I we N I 71? 'I9 enior Log September, 1958, meant only one thing we were Seniors at last! At our first class meeting we chose the class members who were to guide our ship through its most important year. Don Rhoda was elected captain, Gordon Puls as vice-president, Mary Loomis as keeper of the ship's records and James Spencer was in charge of finances. With our able leaders we set sail to make the class of 1959 a success. Our first undertaking was a chicken bar- becue in the fall along with taking care of the concession stand at Packard Field, a job alloted to the graduating class each year. This was a big responsibility, but with the support of the entire class, we were able to begin our voyage with smooth sailing. The Senior Class put on a Shakespearean air this year when Macbeth was considered for production as our class play. Macbeth was put on November 21, a-n event Seniors will long remember. Staging was patterned after the presentations of Shakespeare in the Globe Theatre. Historical value and excellant acting made Macbeth an especially en- joyable and impressive production for all who were fortunate enough to witness our produc- tion. Sale of pennants was also a special Sen- ior Class project during the football and bas- ketball seasons. The red and blue banners with Southwestern printed on them helped to boost school spirit and add to the Seniors' treasury. Along with the sale of banners, we also sold football and basketball programs with a record of the players printed inside. Many hands were required to make our pro- jects profitable. After the home basketball game with Jamestow-n, a dance was sponsored by the members of the class of 1959. Everyone en- joyed themselves and added to making our undertaking a big success. January Exams brought us to the full realization that our wonderful Senior year was half over. How time flies! On February 28, our school gym was turned into a magical night on the Mississippi as the Seniors gave their annual prom in honor of the Junior Class. Many hours of labor and many Doeskin Tis- sues went into the making of a gigantic Showboat float which, along with the music of Gail Graham, gave the evening the true splendor of the 19th century showboat era. Finally came June,' our most difficult month. Along with studying for exams and regents, we took time out for the Senior prom, Senior picnic, Class Night, and finally gradua- tion. Graduation meant the end of our high school years, but we shall never forget the days we spent together as 'a class. Our four years at Southwestern and the class of 1959 have become a part of the past, and now to all these memories we wave a sad good-bye Bon voyage! Bah 'fl ' MARILYN P. Hegstedt, Gerhard Keuning. eniors Enact Macbeth The unique offering by the Senior Class of Southwestern High School for their class play was William Shakespeare's Macbeth. The play was certainly a difficult one yet the members of the cast and all those associated with the play aided in making it an extra- ordinary success. The role of Macbeth was portrayed by Gordon Puls, whose interpretation and un- derstanding gave the role such force. Marilyn Danielson as Lady Macbeth played her role with poignancy and emotion. The sleep walking scene was one of the high- lights of the production. Don Rhoda as Macduff carried his role to its climax in the excellent sword fighting scene in which he decapitates the tyrant Mac- beth. ln the words of the reviewer from the Jamestown Post Journal, the Senior Class is to be complimented in their senior play. The experience will indeed live with them through many years to come. CAST OF SENIOR PLAY MACBETH . First Row: F. Olson, M. Acquista, S. Hans, P. Thompson, P. Tremaine, S. Thor, B. Klawon, P. The Birds And The Boys ln May of '58, the Junior Class presented their annual Class Play. It was a comedy directed by Mrs. Kistler, called The Birds and the Boys. Much of the success of the play was con- tributed by the excellent work of the publicity committee. The program committee all put forth a great deal of effort in the making of programs. Mr. Jones and the stage craft club con- tributed much time and effort in making an outstanding and modernistic set. ni' Q E- 2 5 F f Q X 1 . - K 3 2 A by 'W 5.9 L R L- ..' V',' 'J' if ix? Puls, A. Graham. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY f X X 33 Membership in the National Honor Soci- ety is the highest honor which can be obtained at Southwestern. To become a member of this organization one must display high qualities of scholarship, leadership, character, and ser- vice. The members are elected by the faculty members, l5W of the Senior Class and SWQ of the Junior class being chosen each year. It is the goal of the members of the Na- tional Honor Society to maintain a high per- sonal standard of the qualities which the so- ciety represents and to further the ideals not only of this organization but also the ideals of all students of Southwestern. lnducted into the l958 Societas Honoris were Carol Anderson, Daniel Bell, Marcia Eckman, Maureen Furlong, Maxine Gardner, Carol Penhollow, Betsy Rushworth and James Shearman from the class of 1958, also, Alex- ander Graham, Shirley Hans, Jo Ann Hanson, Sandra Johnson, Gordon Puls, and Carol Starr from the class of 1959. Sandra Johnson was elected as our chapter's president while Carol Starr was elected to take care of our minutes and financial reports. New members are chosen after the third quarter each year leaving only a small work- able group in the fall. Thus, the group is honorary, but of much worth to the students of Southwestern. Oi Line Officers Again this year the Student Council took on the responsibility of being the student governing body of the school. The first meet- ing was held in September with the following students elected to office: Marilyn Danielson, president, Loel Hough, vice-president, Mary Loomis, secretary, and Allen Stranigan, treas- urer. This year the Student Council had three main projects. These were raising more money for next year's foreign student, finding a home for this student, sponsoring one of our stu- dents to go to a foreign country this summer, and writing a constitution for the Student Council. ln order to raise the mo-ney needed for the foreign student, many groups con- tributed along with special functions put on for the benefit of this project. With all that was done by this year's Student Council, much of the credit must be given to our very capable advisor, Mr. Harp. Without him our year would not have been such a successful one. This ceremony was held jointly with the Jamestown troupe and was open to the public. Those taking part in the ceremony from our troupe were, Gordon Puls, Pat Davis, Bruce Bradford, and Marilyn Danielson. After an impressive cere- mony, refreshments were served in the cafe- teria. Gordon Puls has acted as president this year and Marilyn Da-nielson as secretary- treasurer. Requirements for membership have been changed to include any work in or on a dramatic production. Students who had earned a total of ten points from participation in operettas, stage craft, stage crew, and various plays were awarded Thespian membership . A credit, or num ber of credits, are earned either bi being in a dramatic production or bg working to make one a success. Wher a person is a member, they try to earr additional credits. lt is possible te earn a gold star for every additiona ten credits after becoming a Thes pian member. A production is not made a suc cess by the members of the cast only lt is necessary to have various com! mittees to handle all the additiona details of the production. One of the most important committees is the stage crew. They do most of the hare work such as putting up scenery, set ting lights, and all other intricate things that must be done back stage to make a production. National Thespian Troupe Num- ber 866, at present time is inactive because of the small membership. I' is our hope, however, to increase the membership and become active. This club is made up of a freshman team and a varsity team, totaling about twen- ty-five members. The national topic this year was Re- solved that the European system of education is preferable to that of the United States and the state topic was Resolved that the requirement of membership in a labor or- ganization as a condition of employment should be declared illegal. Debates on the topic of education were given for the Lake- wood Kiwanis Club and also for an assembly program. Competitive debates were held with Jamestown and Frewsburg on the topic of labor. Our debate team met the teams of other schools from the surrounding area. Helping Mr. Restivo in running the club are the officers, who are as follows: President, Shelly Olsen, Vice-President, Patt Garlinger, Secretary-Treasurer, Carolyn Klomp. CHESS CLUB-Table One: C. Centralian 1959 was begun in the spring of 1958 to enable the staff, then Juniors, to meet the various deadlines. By meeting these deadlines, a bonus of colored end sheets was given to us. The pictures for these end sheets had to be in to the company by July 1. Fol- lowing these pictures, sixteen pages had to be received by the publishing company by Sep- tember 15. On October 15, we took a day off from working on our pages to pick out a cover for this year's book. The representative from the Inter-Collegiate Publishing Company shwoed several samples to the staff and we picked out the one that fit into the theme of the book best. Sixteen pages, and the number of books we were going to need, had to be in to the company by November 1. The staff, therefore, had been taking orders from the students for yearbooks for about three weeks. The final pages completing the 1959 edition of the Centralian had to be in ten weeks before the books were needed to distribute. The Centralian Staff has been under the leadership of Mrs. Burk, the faculty Sponsor, and Sondra Johnson, the editor of this year's book. Mr. Weiss took the pictures for the Centralian. Your entire Centralian staff has worked to make your 1959 Centralian an accurate log of the events of this school year at South- western. .5 Q Q7 is E? Si we K , 1 .sr Q ' fi ' HA: Q gf.
