HARP Geniality, wittiness and generosity plus his fine teaching ability serve as an incentive and stimulus for those who are in his classes. He is a ffreat favorite at Southwestern, loved and admired by students and faculty alike. Mr. Harp is head of the Mathematics Department, carries a full teaching load, and is very active in student affairs. He is one of the advisers for the Junior class, sponsor for the Student Council and the Chess Club. For outside activities he coaches a junior high school football team, teaches an evening mathematics class at James- town Community College, and is head of training officers of the Jamestown Naval Reserve. D He and his wife Ruby, are active in church and community affairs, and with their four children, Daniel, Milton, Joann and Timothy form a happy unit in our midst. 5 B 0 0 K H 0 l D E R S ip,- wig' 1 HOLLAND W. We started the year off by electing to office four very capable leaders. Charles Trowbridge served his second term as our president, with David Till as his assistant. Maxine Gardner kept the minutes for all our meetings, and Marcia Miller handled the funds. Maxine Gardner, Janet Jones, and Mary Lawson were our representatives to the student council chosen this year, with Paul Romer, Patrick Davis, Robert Swanson, and Roy Christy, last year's representatives, remaining on the coun- cil to assist Mr. Harp, the advisor. Elected to the assembly com- mittee were Marcia Warlow and Nancy Boberg. Following the examples of the classes who have gone be- fore us, we sold programs, and operated the refreshment stand at Packard Field during the football season. Those of us who worked at the stand enjoyed it very much, and the stand proved to be a successful enterprise. During the basketball season, we sponsored several dances after the games. The senior play, Onions in the Stew, a comedy in three acts, was a smash hit. Many of the class were in the cast and others served on various committees. We wish to thank Mrs. Kistler for her fine job of directing the play. One of the most enjoyable events this year was the semi- formal prom, Moulin Rouge, which we presented in honor of the juniors on February 15. We all had a great time, not only at the darine, but also by serving on the decoration and refreshment committees, and by selecting a king and queen. In turn, the juniors presented us with a fomlal prom in June and we all enjoyed ourselves. We would like to thank them for their eforts put forth in order to create wonderful memories for us. We underwrote the operetta, Oklahoma It ran for two nights and was a great success. Nearly everyone in the school took part in the production, either by ushering, making scenery, taking various parts on the stage, or serving on committees. Our last month of school was a very busy one3 we were exchanging personal cards and making last-minute perparations for graduation. At the senior class picnic we all had a wonder- ful time. one we will never forget. We' went swimming, played tennis, and just enjoyed a beautiful day. We wish to thank our advisors, Mr. Restivo, Mrs. Chase, and Mr. Hanson, whf- so unselfishly contributed their time and efforts to make this, :our senior year at Southwestern a success. The cast was chosen, the acts were blocked out, and the performance was put on three weeks later. The setting was an old house on an island in Puget Sound. The MacDonald family, consisting of the mother and father, and two teenaged daughters, just moved into their new home and the play told of their trials and tribulations. The water pipes banged. they were snowed in for two weeks, their plumbing didn't work and they either had to walk along the beach or through the woods because they had no road. 39 The older daughter, Ann, had her own problems, also. She hated the island because she had to leave her boy friend in Seattle. The younger daughter, Joan, hated the island, too, because she wanted to be a singer and felt that she had no future on the island. The play was written by Betty MacDonald who actually lived these experiences. Therefore the play seemed more realistic. All in all it was a very successful performance and it was enjoyed by adults and students alike. UN. If 7 . E i Q. -E, - . r . , A y To my American friends, I'm glad to have this chance to say a few words to all of you, who have been such wonderful fellow students for me. Everybody was kind in his own wayg also everybody was kind in the American way, which always meant com- panionship and friendship. Following remarks are also dedicated to all of my American teachers, who really proved to be much friendlier and more understanding than German teachers usually are. To all people I became acquainted with in the United States, especially to my generous American hosts, Mr. and Mrs. Bootey and family, to all of my teachers, and to all of my fellow students, I'd like to say thank you. They made this wonderful year of experience enjoyable and un- forgettable for me. Although I won't get any school credit in Germany for my studies in the United States, this year gave me far more experience than any regular school year could bring about in Germany. I am enthusiastic about America and the American people. The greatest pleasure I enjoyed in the United States was the exciting feeling to have friends of different na- tionalities and to be able to understand them. I experienced how easy it actually is to get along with and to like each other, regardless of different languages, customs, opinions, and religions. The satisfying feeling of being friendly with people from other countries is something that I wish you all could enjoy sometime in your life because it gives so much and it takes so little. .I'll be ever grateful to the American Field Service and its representatives all around the world who, as volunteers, make their tremendous program possible. The number of ex- change students every year goes already into the thousands and it'll rise further in the future. Since you showed me so many things about American life, I'd like to tell you a little bit about my life back in the old Germany. My hometown is Dortmund, an industrial city ninety miles north-east of famous Cologne. There are 650,000 people living in Dortmund and only about 30,000 cars. That amounts to about twenty-one persons for every car. .lust compare these figures with the statistics of Buffalo where there is a car for every three persons. That shows you that the United States is really the country of cars. You might wonder how we get our transportation with- out enough cars. There are street trains going to every 'part of Dortmund and there is also a very convenient bus system. In addition to that most of the younger people ride bicycles which are much more popular in Germany than in the United States. I go always with a bicycle to school except in bad weather and so do most of my friends. With friends I mean the boys in our school, I wouldn't possibly mean girls, be- cause there aren't any girls in our school. In other words: boys and girls are going to separate high schools in Germany. This law is supposed to raise the learning ability of both boys and girls. r At the right is our student from Germany, Gerhard Keuning, with his American father, . Mr. Robert Bootey. It has been an enjoyable, educational ex- perience to be with Gerhard in his classes, and recreation. It will be interesting to go on through the years having had such an in- timate, personal acquaintance with a class- mate from another country. Below is Gerhard's message to his friends and associates. Book studies are most important in our schools and stu- dents in Germany have to put more time into their as- signments than the American student usually does. We are pushed a little more because it isn't very hard for a teach- er in Germany to kick a lazy or inefficient student out of high school. Another force is that if a student fails two or three subjects out of a variety of ten to twelve, the student has to repeat the whole year with all courses. Repetition of the same year is only allowed once. We can't choose our sub- jects, we have to take what is kindly offered. That seems to be rather hard and it is really so, because only around fifteen percent of all students who started high school are able to graduate. The other eighty-five per cent gets gradually kicked out or leaves school during the nine years of high school. Still and all, I can say that we get our recreation time too. Only that it isn't enough time to have a job besides school and to enjoy many parties and dancing. The German teenagers spend their time quite similar to American entertainment. They go dancing, have parties, collect records, go to movies and so on. A special group of teenagers also admired Elvis Presley for a certain time. A remarkable difference is that the young people in Germany go to theatres for stage plays more often than the people do in the United States. Sports in Germany are a little bit different. The most popular sport in Germany is soccer, which is really a na- tional sport. The people in Germany usually don't like Amer- ican football at all, because they think that it is a very rough and dirty sport. American football is rough all right but these rugged football players can stand that with their protective equipment. So I think football is only half as dangerous and rough as it looks to most people in Germany when they see it in the movies. American football is one example of many things which establish an unfavorable reputation of the United States in Germany. Cowboy movies, Rock 'n Roll, American soldiers, and women wrestling are other examples which contribute to the wrong impression of America. Whenever, there are reports in our newspapers about such events the people in Germany think that those happenings are typical for America because the German people don't get to know anything else. However there are many good incidents which offset those customs, which seem so crazy to German people. Therefore I promise you to talk to all of my friends and to all people I know in Germany about the true picture of American life, which I love so much and which I'll never forget. Don't forget to come to Dortmund when you are travelling in Germany. g...f Gerhard Keuning P Supfpxvzting M if E W vi X 1 555:31 'CH J .4 v,W1,,.,,,,,!5,, M,..E , . ,?,.5?,,,.. .Ty.,....Lt,...,,9,,4,.,,,y:?Fp'-,?,.,Ef,,,,..,..,7.,,,,.,.F,,,,3,,,,,,.?,.,z..y,,.,.,,a.,....,.,,N,V,-.-.,7 -- f.,--H -2 Y-1 3 W-vw . . ..,. The movies shown were Fuller Brush Girl with Lucille Ball and 'LKill the Umpire with William Bendix. The Junior Prom, Moulin Rouge, given by the Seniors, was held February 15. The class dues this year were set at two dollars and were paid by the first week of December. The biggest thrill of the year as every year was the ordering and receiving of class rings. They proved to be very satisfactory to all juniors. We are happy to report we have met the challenge successfully. Many of us have enjoyed participating in such activities as varsity chorus, band, dramatic club, Future Teachers, Future Nurses, Gym Club and S Club. Many of us played on Junior Varsity teams such as basketball, football, and baseball, and did fairly well too! In our treasury we had enough money, carried over from last year, to pay our debts as Sophomores. But we wanted to have something in our treasury to enter our Junior year with so we planned a few pro- jects. Among our planned projects was a dinner- dance held on Thursday, April 25, 1958. We have learned to swallow manfully the large doses of homework assigned nightly, and can do with- out the necessary hours of sleep as well as any upper- classman. We eagerly anticipate our next year of ac- tivities when we can contribute more to the ever- growing renown of Southwestern Central. ROOM 161-First Row: L. Knoepfle, T. Jern, N. Lind, K Kudzy, J. Under the capable leadership of Miss McMillen the Girls S Club had another successful year. Officers were: President, Lynne Hough, Secretary, Judy Gardiner, Treasurer, Phyllis Anderson. Good sportsmanship was stressed through intra- mural games in basketball and volleyball. Points were given toward letters and those members earning two letters received blazers. The innercouncil, consisting of members who had earned at least one letter, did an able job of governing the club. A Farmer's Formal was held in April to help meet expenses. Membership in the Boys' S Club is limited to those boys who have earned at least one letter in a major sport. Jackets are awarded when a boy wins two letters in one sport or three letters in three dif- ferent sports. Money-raising activities have been limited this year, to several successful dances after football and basket- ball games. Many thanks to our capable advisor, Mr. Rushin. 11 41C?y L Masks wlfeod CTJ MM Wfwd . QOJJOMCEHQ WW V B, 54Mj?3 QdfQzm wfMyxWf.iii32 Mwwigzzmh J? F?iJ?gm?3?f?
