So said the famous eighteenth century Eng- I. . . ish painter, Sir Joshua Reynolds. This is as true today as it was two hundred years ogo. Pictures are the glass pones which allow us to look through the window of time, and recall the post F . . or this reason we have designed our yearbook with a pictorial theme. Thus we have created, not just a col- I . . ection of pictures, but a book full of memories. 4 MR. HENRY WEISS To whom we dedicate this book The class of l957 proudly and gratefully dedicates this tenth edition of the Centralian to Mr. Weiss, in appreciation of his years of service to this school and to his students. Mr. Weiss attended Houghton College for four years and later earned his Moster's degree at St. Bonaventure University. He. has taught chemistry at Southwestern for ten years, first at Lakewood, and now at the combined Southwestern Central School. He has given untiringly of his time and energy in such pro- jects as stage work and photography. His work has been in- valuable, and this dedication is our way of showing our appreci- ation. 5 ...-13970-lff 'Z gU:P .4 Q 3 Holland W. Rood Supervising Principal EXECUTI Dear Class of '57: You are the tenth Senior Class to graduate from Southwestern Central School. During your school years you have seen our school system grow from a loosely co-ordinated system of schools with 1400 pupils to a central system with 2250 pupils and a beautiful new high shool which is already growing too small. With this increase in size has come a decrease in personal contact. Where once l could call every student by name, l am now fortunate to be able to do so with the Senior Class. This does not mean a lessening of our concern for you. We do wish every graduate to feel that faculty and staff are pulling for you and will be happy to help you in any way possible in the years to come. As you leave these halls we hope that you have acquired here some of the knowledge which is the heritage of our fathers, that you have learned in some measure how to meet the problems of this complex world and that you have learned to live in peaceful co-operation with your fellow man. Our very best wishes for long life and happiness go with you. Sincerely yours, Boa rd of Education Seated: Mrs. Lillian Till Mrs. Lois Hough Mrs. Jean Bailey Standing: Earl Lawson Harold Erickson Sheldon Myregaard Walter Davis, Jr. Vern Johnson Not Present Dr. Roland Laury L DEP RTME T Other classes have graduated from Southwestern Central but you represent the first graduating class that has had the privilege of being together during your Senior High school years. May l congratulate you for the very admirable way in which you have adjusted to your new environment. Old friendships and traditions of Celoron and Lakewood are still cherished but at the some time have been changed to fit in to the pattern that is now Southwestern Central. You face the future with hopes, ambitions, and the desire to achieve your own ,conception of a successful life. I only hope that through your school ex- periences you have developed a sense of values that will help you determine just what is success. For there is an ap- pointed sphere for every man born, it may be humble or it may be great, but he that fulfills his destiny with becoming grace and modesty, is a success no mat- ter how humble his calling. Moy l extend upon behalf of the Faculty and myself, our best wishes for not only a successful life but more im- portantly a long and happy one. Sincerely yours, l Cloise E. We had many plans for our last year of school. To lead us we chose David Lange, with Ruth Ostrm presiding in his absence. Donya Warner took the minutes, and Ronald Burstrom was our treasurer. Representing us on the student council were Marjorie Howbridge, Edward Reasor, and Phyllis Nordland, Kathleen Erbm and Joann Babyak. During the football season we operated a concession stand at every home game. Hot coffee was very popular on cold nights, and so the stand was a popular place. lt proved to be a profitable undertaking. ln November the senior girls held the annual tea for Southwestern graduates who were home from college for the Thanksgiving holi- day. We learned quite a bit about college life from them. We held several dances after basketball games, and on February 22 we presented the Jun- iors with a semi-formal prom, Fantasia Bar- bara Sigel was chairman of the event, and Richard Howgard was co-chairman. ln June, the Juniors in turn presented us with a formal prom which we all enjoyed to the utmost. The last few weeks of our year was occupied with exchanging of personal cards, preparation for graduation, and for those last hurdles, final exams. We could not have had such a successful year without the patient counselling of our class advisers, Mrs. Williams, Mrs, Chase, Mr. Ripley, and also Mr. Windoft and Mrs. Tarbrake, who were with us at the beginning of the year. We wish to extend to them our sincere thanks. Shirley Saulsgiver and Diane Anderson sit ready to serve tea to friends and parents who visited the Home Economics class. 44 RE MADE OF THI Mix 3' . . One of the big events of the year was the annual Junior play which was Riddle Me Riches, given under the direction of Mrs. Kistler. 1 The Juniors enjoyed the prom given them by the Seniors on February 22. We had new activities open to us. We enjoyed participating in such activities as varsity chorus, band, dramatic club, future teachers and future nurses. Many of us took new subjects as electives, which were chal- lenging and required considerable work. We elected officers and then turned our minds to money raising projects. Our dinner- dance held in the spring proved to be our best project. Each homeroom presented an assembly program, which was a different idea that gave more students a chance to participate, learn to accept responsibility and enjoy co- operotion with fellow students. There are a million details that are likely to be overlooked. The staff this year has put forth every effort to fill this book with the memories of the year. This work has been, in turn, enjoyable, tiring, exhausting, and rewarding. lt is their hope that the book conveys to the reader the busy, vibrant tone which goes on at Southwestern throughout the year. The National Honor Society Societas Honoris Chapter Membership in the National Honor Society is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a student in our school. The criteria by which these students are chosen are character, scholarship, leadership, and service. Only those students who best exemplify these four ideals are chosen as members. Candidates are selected by the com- bined votes of the faculty, and all members must continue to maintain an outstanding scholastic average to remain in the society. The National Honor Society represents the fundamental objectives for which our schools are instituted. Among these objectives are to create a stimulus for scholarship, to encourage students to render service to the school and the community, to encourage an extension of education, and to cause students to evaluate themselves more criti- cally. Jeanne Schneider was elected president, Kath- leen Erb, vice-president, and Margaret Logan, sec- retary. Because of the small size of the group most of the year they were inactive. At the begin- ning of the year pins with the emblem of the Soci- ety were bought by the members. The tapping ceremony was held on March l5 by the incumbent members who were inducted as Juniors last year. They were: Jeanne Schneid- er, Eileen Wetzen, Ruth Ostrom, Kathleen Erb, and Margaret Logan. Those chosen from the senior class this year were: Sarah Farnsworth, Carol Loftus, Virginia Milliron, Marjorie Howbridge, Jean Fargo, Phyllis Nordland, Kay Rothra, Beverly Haz- zard, Carol Danielson, David Lange. Those chosen from the junior class were: Sandra Sundeen, Char- les Trowbridge, David Till, Paul Romer, Clint Mer- ley. Formal induction was held 'n April. Senior High Student Council held its first meeting in October and selected its offic- ers. Those chosen were: president, Paul Romer, vice-president, Marjorie Howbridge, secretaw, Robert Swanson, treasurer, Ed Rea- sor, and sergeant at arms, Roy Christy. During the year one project which the members undertook was the printing of school calendars. These calendars which showed the dates of social and athletic events were dis- tributed to the homerooms, and were appreci- ated by the students. Another service to the upper classmen was the playing of records over the loudspeaker in the cafeteria during the Senior High lunch period. In the latter 'part of the year the Student Couhcil aided in the production of the annual Variety Show and the awards assembly. They play an invaluable role in help- ing us plan for our life's work. Future Farmers of America elected the following officers: Donald Levin, president, Paul Levine, vice-president, John Nelson, Sec- retary, John Richards, treasurer, Larry Holmst- rom, reporter, and Robert Morrison, Sentinel. The Future Farmers took part in a dairy judg- ing contest with Panama, and won the trophy for the year. Future Teachers worked hard to prepare for their chosen professions. Sandra Abra- hamson acted as presiding officer, with Carol Anderson taking over in her absence. Sherry Dawn Carlson was secretary, and Janet Sig- gins, treasurer. Mrs. Deuink was our advisor. We gained valuable experience in teaching by assisting the grade school teachers. Officers of Future Nurses were elected as follows: Margaret Logan, president, Roberta Pierce, vice-president, Azaliene Carlson, sec- retary, and Mary Ellen Carlson, treasurer. Mrs. McKay was our sponsor. Activities of the club included several discussions and movies. An important activity of members was assisting at well-baby clinics. Requirements for winning a letter vary with each sport. For instance, in football the number of quarters played is considered, in wrestling it is the win-loss record that counts. Boys who have won two letters in one sport or three in different sports are awarded blue jackets. The Girls' S Club is open to any girl who is interested in participating in sports. Letters are awarded to girls who have accumulated a certain number of points. A letter entitles a girl to membership in the Inner Coun- cil. When a girl has won two or more letters she is awarded an S Club jacket. This year the Inner Council voted to award white blazers instead of jackets. is-,W 3-. soirs' s CLUB Row One: R. Barton, P.
