Connelly Mrs. Dorothy B. Connelly, Supervisor of the Third Supervisory district, retired this year after a lifetime of service dedicated to the schools of Chautauqua County. Mrs. Connelly's experience encompassed all phases of education from the one-room rural school to the modern streamlined edifices of today, but her sound judgment and keen sense of humor helped her take every change in her stride. At a testimonial dinner, given in her honor at South- western on january 31, scores of those who had been friends and admirers of Mrs. Connelly's gathered from all over her district. They came to pay tribute, and recall dozens of incidents, often of a humorous nature, which will long remain warm memories of this fine woman both as a supervisor and as a friend. Perhaps one of the fondest memories of those at Southwestern will be the one concerning the fearless Mrs. Connelly and the weather. Like the United States mail, Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor night stayed the intrepid Mrs. C. from the swift completion of ap- pointed rounds. We all value our acquaintance with Mrs. Connelly and wish her many years of pleasant retirement. Sealedt Mr. W. Davis, Mr. E. Lawson, Mr. V. johnson. Standing: Mr. S. Myregaard, Mrs. M. Since Har- vey is so well known on Broadway, the enthusiam of the public was tremendous. The plot of the play centered around the rabbit companion of the lovable eccentric, Elwood P. Dowd, who would rather be friendly than successful. To save face before her friends, his sister at- tempted to have Elwood committed to Chumley's Rest, only to be entered as a patient herself. The plot thickened when the rabbit became ll reality even to the doctor. The success of the play would not have been possible without the untiring efforts of Mrs. Edith I-Ielgren and her att departmentg and the close co- operation of the entire class. 7 Sealed: Miss Kelly-Marie Scalise, Mrs. Chauvenet-Sally Gross. JUNIOR CLASS Our activities began this year under the very capable leadership of Kathleen Erb, with Ronald Burstrom taking over in her absence. Donya Warner submitted the min- utes and Willard Hern handled our finances. Sarah Farnsworth, Eileen Wetzen and David Lange were elected to the student council. Our assembly representatives were Ruth Olstrom, Donya Warner and Judy North. Judy Heald was given the job of reporting class progress. One of our most important projects began in October when we decided to change the design of our class rings. Rather than the traditional ship associated with Lake Chautauqua, we now have the trojan head. Most of the members of the class felt the trojan head better symbolizes our school. With this change made, we all waited with eager anticipation for the arrival of the rings. On February ll, we were honored by the Senior Class at the Annual Senior-junior Prom, Neptune's Gardens. Music was furnished by the Mello-Tones. We hope the Seniors know how much we appreciated all the hard work they put into making it a night we shall always remember. On March 9th, we presented the comedy, Connecticut Yankee, in King Arthur's Court, which was directed by Miss Pauline Lopus. It was greatly enjoyed by all and was termed highly successful. To add to our finances we held a dance after the Fredonia and Falconer Basketball games. Our big, big moment came on june 9th when we presented the Seniors with the formal Prom given annually in their honor. The class of 1957 worked hard to leave the Seniors many fond and pleasant memories. A great honor was bestowed upon our class when Eileen Wetzen was chosen as the Herman Kent Post, American Legion Auxiliary's representative to Empire Girl's State at Skidmore College, David Lange was chosen by the Lakewood Memorial Post and Jack Matthews was chosen by the Herman Kent Post as representative to Boy's State at Colgate University. 40 1 'ai Learn From Experience Of 0ther I Q . rr.. For the first time we are able to count as our homerooms and classrooms those rooms in the senior high wing in the west end of our new building, one step closer to our ultimate goal. The first event to take place toward making the year a pro- fitable one was the election of officers. Chosen to lead the class were: Paul Romer, preridentg Bruce Bradford, vice- pferidentg Maxine Gardiner, recretaryg and Marcia Warlow, trearurer. Representatives to the Student Council were Frank Brink and Gary Braun. Roy Christy, Janet Siggins, Janet Jones, and Shirley Carlson were elected to the assem- bly committee. In spite of busy schedules, the sophomores have found time to participate in such organizations as Varsity Band, Varsity Chorus, Senior High Dramatic Club, Stage Club, Future Nurses' Club, and Future Teachers' Club. Because of the lack of clubs in the junior high school last year, these activities were doubly welcome, making for a more interesting and well-balanced program. We also found time to hold a dance in the school cafeteria in March under the guidance of our advisors, Mrs. Watson, Mrs. Strenge, Mrs. King, and Mr. Hanson. It proved to be enjoyable to all who attended, and profitable to our class treasury. ROOM 161 -Rau' One: J. Crimmins, M. Warlow, R. Vail, P. Levin, A. Carlson, C. Smith, G. Allen Stranigan was chosen as president of the class, and Sandra Thor acted as vice- president. Barbara Foote represented the class as Secretary Reporter. To care for the financial status of the class, james Johnson was elected. Each homeroom had a staff of officers to keep the entire class informed of its activities. Homeroom teachers were Miss Cook, Miss jones, Mr. Weiss, Mr. Calamungi, and Mr. Smith, ready and willing to help the freshmen with their many problems. The class has had time for such activities as S Club, Baton Club, Girls' Intramurals, Glee Club, Band, and Orchestra. The freshman football and basketball teams were well known for their valor. The junior High Stu- dent Council has done much to make the activity period a busier one for the junior-high students. To raise funds for the class debt we held a banquet, its committee headed by Cortland Kelsey. A dance Was also held for the entertainment of the entire class. Each homeroom elected a president, vice-presi- dent, secretary, treasurer, student council and assembly committee representatives. The presidents and treasurers from the homerooms met and chose Laraine Bell as presid- ing officer and Margaret Harrison as the treasurer of the entire class. Each homeroom completed a project to raise money for the class funds. Mrs. Deuink's group sold Christmas cards while Mrs. Burk's students sold note paper bearing a sketch of the school. Basketball pencils were again sold by Mrs. Ulmer's room. With a portion of the money raised by Mr. Erb's homeroom, books were purchased for the enjoyment of the class. After reading the well known, A Christmas Carol, a play was written and presented by the students themselves, under the direction of Mrs, Deuink. Her homeroom managed the library for the seventh grade this year, assisted by a member of the Future Teachers' Club. Each member of the class has had an opportunity to assist in the library. The class has also kept a scrapbook of the year's activities. A if M Z 5 i-..i i SEVENTH GRADE ROOM 115 ROOM 115-Ron' One: G. Olson, J. Scalise, J. Butler, R. Swanson, 1. Ford, R. Penhollow, D. Schutt. Stage Club, under the very capable leadership and untiring efforts of Mrs. Helgren, successfully created beautiful sets for the Senior, junior, and Dramatic Club Plays, as well as the operetta and the various concerts presented by the music de- partment. Scenery used for many of the high school assembly programs, and the Junior-Senior High School Variety Show for the Organ Benefit was very artistically designed. Several different times during the school year we were assisted by practice teachers from Buffalo State Teachers' College. For the first time in the history of dramatic productions in our school, it was necessary to use two complete scenery sets for the Senior Class Play Harvey. This was largely possible because of our extremely versatile stage equipment. We are very happy to say ,that several new cupboards and other aids to stage productions have been added this year. By adding a few pieces of such equipment each year we hope to make the production of programs more efficient and enjoy- able and be able to preserve much valuable appara- tus for future use. Behind The cene The stage crew enlarged its area of operation this year when it was provided the challenge for the senior play. In this presentation there are two sets of scenery on stage at once. When one set is to be used the other has to be lifted up into the scene loft, that area above the stage. Of course, all this must be done with all possible speed and quiet. They are also charged with the operation of the intricate machinery used in producing the many lighting effects used on stage. The use of this expensive, apparatus requires special training and it is taboo for anyone else to set foot on the bridge where the operators work this equipment. It is due to the efficient work of this specialized group that many successful productions have been pre- sented. Each concert, play, assembly, and program proved to be a field of new experience for this crew. We would like to extend our many thanks to our new director Mr. Corbin for his assistance. Sally Gross was elected prerzklentq Phillip Yates, vice-preridentg Mary Furlong, irearurerg and Sarah Farns- worth, recretary. Almost sixty students were enrolled in the club this year. One of the first projects was to have a cupboard built back stage for costumes, make-up and other properties of the club. In December the club presented two one-act plays in an assembly program for the senior high school. The boys presented a less dramatic play called Little Prison. Mrs. Watson was assisted by Wendy Williams, student director, who did ai very fine job. Our three-act production, Our Town, was given on April 20 for the public. Our Town, by Thorton Wilder was the first play of its type produced by the student body here. Our Town was done in costume, but without scen- ery or props of any type, these being left to the imagi- nation of the audience with the help of a narrator, por- trayed by David Lange. The hero of the play is the town itself typifying small town life. Mr. Corbin was responsi- ble for the musical background for the play. He is very much interested in dramatics and was quite active in the Mummers at Fredonia State Teachers College. We also have the Stage Club to thank for its cooperation in making the scenery for all our productions. Four Little Theatre memberships were purchased for use of the members of the club, and they were greatly appreciated. We owe a great deal to our advisor, Mrs. Watson, who has given assistance and much of her time to the club. Trojan Chronicle peak ! During i'Farm and Home Week we attended Cor- nell University along with members of the Ripley School. Many of the exhibits and University buildings were visited. The County Future Farmers of America Contest was entered by Fred johnson and he won second prize. We attended a Calf Selection Day where Fred johnson and Stanley Peterson purchased pure bred Hol- stein calves. We sold Robson seeds and made some money for the chapter as well as learning the adopted varieties of this area. We aided in putting in 30 acres of grass seed on the school lawn. The annual County Future Farmers of America Field Day was presented by us at Packard Field in Lakewood. Contests in weeding, cutting, track, softball, and tractor driving were held throughout the day. During the summer vacation we attended several judging tours, the Black and White, the Artificial Breeders, the Guernsey, and the Southwestern Dairy tour which includes Chautauqua and Cattaragus counties. The chapter then put up a booth at the Chautauqua County Fair, on Soil Conservation and received second prize. The success of the club can be attributed to the experienced and capable leadership of Mrs. McKay, school nurse, and Miss Lopus, guidance counselor. Sheryn Hansen was elected president, and when she was absent Marjorie Howbridge conducted the meetings. The minutes were accurately kept by Margaret Logan, and Mary Ellen Carlson kept the club informed on the current financial status. Many projects were undertaken this year. As a money making project a bake sale was held. Our main project, however, was a First-Aid course under the very adept in- struction of Miss Lopus. We all received our First Aid cards on completion of the course. Experienced through the year by several members, were trips to the Well-Baby Clinic and the Salk Polio Vaccine Clinic where they assisted the doctors and the nurses. Among the social events of the year was a visit by Bemus Point Central School, Future Nurses' Club. A party was held at Christmas and gifts were brought and given to a needy family to make their Christmas happier. At the end of the year a party was held. Sheryn Hansen, Carolyn Nordland, and Lois Jones plan to enter nurses training in September. Sheryn is planning to enter Strong Memorialg Carolyn, W.C.A. Members are chosen from the four dimensions of life-character, scholarship, leadership, and service. They are selected by the combined votes of the faculty and must continue to maintain an outstanding scholastic aver age to remain in the society. The National Honor Society represents the funda- mental objectives for which our schools are instituted and gives recognition to those who have attained most nearly the desired ends. No honor conferred by the school excels that of this society. The chapter this year consolidated the old Lakewood and Celoron chapters and adopted the name of Societus Honoris Elowyn Penhollow was elected president and Wendy Williams as secretary In order to bolster our treasury and gain the status of an active organization w waged a campaign to sell beanies which sold like wildfire The tapping ceremony was held in an assembly on March 19th by the incumbent members who were inducted as uniors last year They were Wendy Williams Nancy Hendler Elowyn Penhollow Gail Marsh and Kenneth Schneider Those who were chosen from the senior class this year were: Warren Swanson, Denis Simmons, Roland ohnson, Carolyn Nordland, Norma Davis, Georgia Bosko, Mary Furlong, and Carolyn Peter- son. Track is running, jumping, and throwing, just what the 1955 track team did, under the experienced help of our Director of Athletics, Mr. Rushin. To the boys who give up their spring afternoons to participate, track means a lot. To feel their bodies flying over the track, and to see themselves set new records gives them a feeling of accomplishment. The feelings and goals of the boys are shown somewhat in the record of the 1955 track team. Due to the lack of a pole vault pit at Packard Field, we were unable to hold any meets at home but we attended a five-school meet at Salamanca. Team- mates bringing in honors were Wally Carlson, sec- ond in the 100 yard dash, Terry Ellis, second in the 220 yard dash, john Ford, first in the 440 yard dash, Roy Christy, third in the 440, Rollie Carlson, third in 880 yard dash. Next in'line for honors were Red Robbins, who placed first in the low hurdle, and Chuck Miller who placed second in the high jump. Oui Relay team also brought home second place honors. We were at Falconer twice for the county and conference meets. To top off the season the team travelled to Hamburg for the sectionals. Boys placing there were Terry Ellis, second in the lO0 yard dash, XX'ally Carlson, second in the 220 yard dash, and john Ford, first in his heat of the 440. Gordy Robbins was again first at the hurdles, tying the sectional record in his first heat. The highlight of the day was the triumph of our relay team com- prised of Wally Carlson, Dave Lange, Gordy Wahl- gren, and Terry Ellis. In coming in first, the relay team brought home the relay trophy. The track team hopes to have as successful a year in the 1956 season. This is highly possible, as there is some very promising material in the coming team. 77 May The Be Referee Ross Dibias, Butch Sandberg of S.W. C.S. and opponent Gene Bue. t Man Win By taking two second places in the sectionals at Buffalo, setting the record for the time taken to pin a man, and placing two men on the undefeated list, the 1956 wrestling team ended the season in a very fine man- ner. Coach Clarence Olson, in his second year, groomed a fine team. Outstanding were Burgio, 120 lb. senior who, after setting the record of 16 seconds for a pin, ended the season with an undefeated record, as did Stevens. Traniello. wrestling in the 127 lb. class, finished his season by taking a second place in the sectionals. Sandberg, the 205 lb, roly-poly senior, ended the season with 7 Wins out of 8 starts. Probably the season's pleasantest surprise was the rapid development of underclassmen, and here Ernie Schuyler and Mike Harrison were outstanding. Schuyler, who hadn't previously played varsity ball, was given the commanding task of quarter- backing Southwestern's intricate Split-T offense. I-Ie came on very swiftly at the end of the season, was particularly impressive against Falconer and led team scoring with 52 points. The year's experience should contribute much toward making him a polished field general in 1956. In Harrison, the Trojans had their first authen- tic broken-field threat since the storied days of jack Wigley and Tom Naughton. Mike broke the Gowanda game wide open with two 60-yard touch- down runs, and the footing on that dreary, rainswept night was anything but secure. Allan Capron was another of Rushin's younger stars. Only a sophomore, Allan earned his starting spurs in the Dunkirk battle and was seldom out of the lineup thereafter. He was a product of Sam Restivo's freshman team of 1954. Game by game, the season went like this: SALAMANCA-It was an impressive opener under the lights at Veterans Memorial Field. Schuyler scored twice, Knoepfle and joe Scorse v turned in stickout defensive games and the Trojans captured a 19-0 victory over Salamanca and its new coach, Harry O'Neil. DUNKIRK-This would best be forgotten. Harrison shook loose for the lone Trojan score in a 30-7 shellacking. FREDONIA-Surrendering the first score, SW rebounded on a rainy, dismal night for a 30-6 win over their bitter Conference rivals. Allen and Schuyler starred and Scorse received a shoulder in- jury that was to sideline him the remainder of the season. GOWANDA-Mostly Harrison and a 26-7 victory. BROCTON-Dave Lange and Ronnie Bur- strom sparked the Trojan jV's'to a 12-0 win over their more experienced Northwestern Conference opponents. FALCONER-Not to be denied a Conference title, Falconer swept to a 21-0 triumph behind Vince Boyd, Clark Maloney, Jim Fink, and a rock- ribbed defense, that yielded only 21 yards rushing. NORTHERN AREA-A Z7-18 victory, with Pomeroy bulling across for two touchdowns, snapped a 15-game undefeated string manufactured by the Sugar Grove, Pa., powerhouse. 'Fight For The Glory ol. .. Although' the squad will be losing a lot of its weight in losing the fine tackles Wayne Anderson and Butch Sandberg, Jim Ellison and Al Capron, excelling in agility will not be halted. The big threat to the opponents in scorin next year will be Ernie Schuyler's ability to reach the goal post. The coaches feel that with the experience gained in a rough year like this, next year's squad will prove very successful. 195 5 record VARSITY GAMES Southwestern Opponents 1 9 Salamanca 'k 0 7 Dunkirk 30 30 Fredonia ' 6 2 6 Gowanda 7 12 Brocron 0 0 Falconer 2 1 27 Northern Area l 8 12 1 82 - Southwestern Conference Games FRESHMAN FOOTBALL With Sam Restivo elevated to an assistant varsity position, Flash Olson ably took over the freshman reins. Hopeful J. V. Cort Kelsey will be missed as he is leaving for a private school. Al Stranigan, Joe Venus, Jack Knowlton, and Little Bob Lange also were outstanding in play. The first game. scheduled with Sugargrove was lost. However, it was felt that the earlier season start of the Pennsyl- vania school had much to do with the defeat of the eighth grade gridmen. With the added practice available to the Penn boys, it was highly under- srandable. The second game was lost for the want of an extra point, the score being 7-6, in favor of XVashington. The third game turned the tables for the Baby Trojans, with a victory of 18-6 over the Falconer eighth grade team. The next game was slated against Sugargrove again By this time, the Penn l I .Q boys had proved to be the best team seen in that school for a long time. A hard game, the victory stood at the hands of Sugargrove. Due to weather conditions, the last game was cancelled. An intersquad game, which proved highly beneficial to the practice of the boys, was held in its place, Boys who showed a great deal of improvement throughout the season were john Forrester, Chuck Larson, Micky Yates, Dave Hyde, Gary Frazer and Mike Yuchnitz. During the season jack Knowlton was moved up to the Freshman team. Mr. Harp was the coach for the boys again this year, the tenth year he has coached a junior high team. VARSITY VOLLEYBALL Before the County Tournament we had a practice game with Brocton and three games with the alumni which helped show up the weak points that we needed to work upon. An assembly was held the day before the County Tournament in order to acquaint the student body with the game. Mr. Shevalier announced the game, describing some of the more important rules. Larry Dawson and Don Rhoda refereed and kept score while other members of the third team helped at the net during the games played between the first two teams for the benefit of the students. At the County Tournament at Jamestown High School, we fell under the hard spikes of the Cas- sadaga Volley team to lose the first game of the day Cassadaga Valley went on to win the tournament The second game with Jamestown was also lost, and with that we began to see the championship fade into the distance. The third game turned into a victory for the Men of Troy, we were pitted against Fredonia. In the last game we were matched against Dunkirk, the only other AA team there. Our victory over them made us eligible for the Sectionals, to be held at Dunkirk. At the Sectionals we were matched against Fron- tier. This how- ever, is not an indication of the team spirit the boys showed while on the court. In many games, although, they were a few points behind, the J. V.'s hustled right up till the final buzzer, regardless of the outcome. On Saturday, January 18, the Varsity- and- the Junior Varsity enjoyed a trip to Buffalo. In Me- morial Auditorium we saw two thrilling games. In the opener, Niagara downed St. Bonaventure and in the main game Dayton beat Canisius. Many of the J. V.'s showed much promise and as future Varsity players we are expecting great things of them. Congratulations are due the J. V.'s for their good showing in their games played prior to the Varsity games Much credit is also given to Mr Smith whose competent and able direction was highly appreciated by the members of the team SCORES SWCS SWCS SWCS SWCS SWCS SWCS SWCS SWCS SWCS SWCS SWCS SWCS SWCS SWCS SWCS SWCS SWCS SWCS THE J. The require- ments for obtaining a letter differ with each sport. For example, in football the points are based on the number of quarters playedg in wrestling, it is the win-loss record that counts, Blue jackets are awarded the boys who have earned two letters in one sport or a combination 'of three in different sports. This past year under the direction of our ad- visor, Mr. Rushin, we sold white wind breakers, trimmed with the design of a Trojan warrior, to the student body. The Boys S Club sponsored dances after the football games and some of the basketball games, and with the money raised, the jackets for the two- lettermen were purchased. We extend our gratitude to Coach Rushin for all he has done to help the S Club in its successful accomplishments. To belong to the Inner Council, a girl must have earned at least one letter. Letters are based on points earned during the year. A person can earn points by taking part in the various S Club activities such as intramurals and play days. When two letters have been awarded the member is entitled to an S Club jacket. At the first meeting of the Inner Council we elected officers and they were as follows: Preiident: Connie Nelson Serretary: Mary Louise White Trearureff: Agnes Anderson The Girls S Club has had a profitable year under the capable leadership of our Gym teacher, Miss McMillen, and our President, Connie Nelson. We had a Farmers' Formal in March, which was a success and we have con- ducted some of the dances after the basketball and foot- ball games. 'if .4 US., Rau' One: C. Loftus, P. Lane, N. Davis, D.
