Who left your home for battle 's fray, Who can praise enough the deeds you 've Or a Worthy tribute to you pay? To heroes past we honor give, We reverence them in freedom 's name: T ho, in our hearts their deeds shall live, To you must be the greatest fame. Columbia 's son! Whom God let live, And thou who art the immortal one Who freely precious life did give, How great the victory you 've won- A new world blessed with freedom true Because of fearless men and brave! How dear was liberty to you, How dear the hope the World to save! The hope of truth and purity For which democracy must fight, Whose motto surely ne 'er shall be Such feeble theme as might is right Thou son whom God has chosen to die That all from tyrants' hand be free Altho' in flowery France you lie So far across the stormy sea. 'Tis you we never shall forget. When praise We give to loyal ones, To you we pay the greatest debt We owe to freedom is noble sons. -Minnie Ferguson. So we took to walks and talks and Campustryg And our pent-up spirits struggled to be freeg Till our friends rose up in warth, And they pointed out the path That must be tread alone-in misery. Oh, they shook us up and told us to be goodn, And we were forcedto promise that we would, But to take the chance they gave Means a certain, silent grave, For we cannot say the things we feel we should. And some of us are still in old Left NVing, But we never say a word nor even singg For by track or trial they 'll find us And in austere tones remind us Of our promise to be good i11 everything. Yet, we go into the town as brave as tho Our faces they were never streaked with woeg For we're hard as eats to kill, And our hearts are restless still, And we 've dodged the Dean a dozen times or so. And you 'll find us down at Jennings after school, And you 'll find us sometimes swimming in the pool,' For those with lore of earth Know our pride and know our worthg There 'S a restlessness that discipline can't rule. -Elizabeth Sutherland. Il SAN MARCOS, TEXAS Il .1 THE PEDAGOG 1919 lp THE JUNIORS We're the class! We're the class of the Normal! And We're never known to break a rule. And you'l1 know before you're through That there's aught we could not dog If we Wanted to, We could run the school. As it is, we do all the doing. We make everybody sit up and stare. You hear'em whisper as we pass, There goes the Junior Class. A class? You're might right, they're there. You ask me, What makes 'em. all so Happy? You ask me, What makes 'em all so glad? It's the thought of our great power Growing greater hour by hour, And we've scarce another thought to make us sad Oh! We're big and We're brave, and We're hearty, And' We-re never known to break a rule. No! more lies I will not tell, For I know you know full well We're the peppiest class that ever was in school. -B. N. stands at the Portal of Knowledge and knocks for admission to the Junior class. The product from another source could be no finer. Not only in number but also in size, nerve, tact, good looks, popularity, and scholarship do we excel the product of any class ever trained in our Dear Alma Mater. It is with heavy hearts and mournful countenances that we leave our be- loved Sophomore and enter the Junior. the Promised Land of Knowledge. Ordinarily Freshmen are slow to accept advice. and we do not wish to hurt the pride of the Juniors and Seniors as they stand on the threshold of hope and prosperity, we will not offer any advice. However, being over burd'ened with holdings and interests in our fellow students we hereby, as Sophomores, make public this, our last will and testament in order that aforesaid holdings and interests may be rightly distributed. First. To all College Juniors and Seniors we leave our congratulations that they are leaving behind them all the pleasures and plans incidental to the lives of Freshmen, Sophomores. Juniors and Seniors. and our goods wishes- of courage and strength to carry them on in their pursuit of what awaits them. Second. To the Seniors we leave our wishes of happy days to be spent in imparting their well-earned knowledge. and when the lure of teaching has lost its hold on them, we hope that they find a mate who will make their yoke easy and their burden light. Third. To the Next Sophomore Class we leave our desire that they make a record equal to the one we are leaving. Fourth. To the Freshmen we leave our notebooks- on Education and our English Themes with a wish that the guiding spirits who helped us over the hills and ridges will hover over them and keep them from flunking. Fifth. To all Freshmen and' new incoming Sophomores we leave our Sympathy, which they will need as they spend weary hours in the Study Hall. Sixth. To the next Chemistry Class we bequeath our note books on lab work. Here they will find a rich heritage of odors and long ages ot' labor, under which we hope they will suffer no loss. Seventh. To all students, including ourselves, we leave our hope that there will be no more Social Rules and that we may enjoy Freedom as intelligent men and wom.en of our class and age should. Eighth. Again, to all students we leave our protecting thoughts which we hope will save them from being silently taken to the edge of the campus and dropped' off. Ninth. To all members of the Faculty we leave our memories or themes, quizzes, and notebooksg may the vision of our suffering haunt them until they become more merciful in dealing with the next year's students. Tenth. To our President we leave some of our Proper Attitudes with a request that he bestow equitably among those who follow us. Eleventh. To all, we leave our desire to meet in the future and be able to talk over the happy past. Finally. We nominate and appoint and hereby commission the Janitor and Registrar as executors of this our last will and testament, requiring that they first give sufficient bond and security. In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hand and seal this the second' day of June, in the year of our Lord 1919. The Sophomore Class of S. W. T. N. Normal -By L. I looked back over all of my school days four long years, and thought of the obstacles I had overcome and the trials which I had conquered. The most remarkable feature of my dream was that the classes were reversed. VVe were Seniors, the Sophomores were Juniors, the Juniors were Sophomores-- but the sweetest of all-those proud Seniors were Freshmen. Gleefully we handed back all of the insults and the slurs that they had given us. For every hour of sorrow they had given us, we cuased them a day of pain. Juniors, too, came in for a share of what the Seniors received, but we permitted the Sophomores to live in peace. Privilege was represented to me in the form of a person. He showed the effects of a hard life. He had been abused by all the Seniors in the past and was destined ever to be, but Privilege was never abused before and shall never be again in the history of the Southwest Texas State Normal College as he was during that one short night in my dreams-when I was a Senior. Mathematics, English, History, Foreign Language, and all other horrors of the Freshman were personified. In order they marched by-all were wearing the dejected attitude of the defeated-we had conquered them. Never again would they rise up and proclaim themselves masters, for we were rulers over all. Faculty and students alike bowed down to us in subjection-we were Seniors And just as a diploma was being handed to me and we were being praised and pointed out as the most remarkable class that had ever graduated from the Southwest Texas State Normal College, a bell rang out on the morning air and I awoke-A Freshman. -Almanor Chapman. ll SAN MARCOS, TEXAS Il . The Club is open to both men and women students. It exists for the purpose of preparing rural teachers to become efficient leaders of social life in their respective communities. The Club meets twice each month. The members study various country life problems such asp the lack of coeoper- ation in the country. the tendency of country boys and' girls to flock to the city. and the dearth of organized play. As this third problem is largely responsible for the present undesirable situation, it receives especial emphasis. After the study hour, the members of the club adjourn to the gymnasium where they actually play the games they expect to use in their country work. This offords not only valuable training, but a delightful means of recreation. .TISAN MARCOS,TEXASH One Hundred and Twelve 211 THE PIQDAGLKS 1919 RUTH KNISDEL TTQEASURER HAZEL MONTGOMERY socmu. comm-r-ree H.Fi KUEHN LOQA FOSTER VICE-PRLS. W. C. A. 1918-19 The work of the Y. W. C. A. has been one of the main features of student life in the Normal during the term, of 1918-19. The cabinet and the various committees have been exceedingly faithful in their work and have contributed greatly to the success of the various activities. The most beautiful and impressive meeting of the fall term was the Candle Recognition Service. It was held in the Auditorium where, in the deepening twilight, the cabinet girls received the new members into the Assocation. Foremost among the social events was the marshmallow roast given to the entire school in honor of the S. A. T'. C. Other features of the fall term were: World Fellowship Weekg a pagenant, When East Meets W'0st,' and talks by Messrs. Birdwell. Neal and Burkholder. During the winter term. Mr. Birdwell gave a most helpful and inspiring course of lectures on Community Leadership. Two other events of this term deserve especial mention: The beautiful play, It Huppmzcd in Jap-rm, given by Miss Hornsby's reading classy and the thought provoking address on Woman. and Democracy by Dr. Eby of the University of Texas. The Social Service Committee did a most important piece of work in organizing the new Country Life Club. The Publicity Committee was successful in bringing before the minds of many students some of the great problems of our day. They stationed in most conspicuous places. posters on child labor. treatment of our immigrants, and our relations with other nations. Among the most appreciated addresses of the spring term were: The Womanfs Move- ment, by President Evans: and The Value of Music, by the Rev. L. D. Grafton. The girls of the Association took a leading part in enrolling the students of the Normal in the Christian Democracy classes. These classes were first organized in the spring of 1918 and proved so successful that similar courses were offered this year. Over sixty-five percent of the student body enrolled on these classes, which were conducted by the various members of the faculty. They studied the solution of our great recon- struction problems in the light of Christian principles. 1 II SAN MARCQS, TEXAS ll One Hunclrefl and Twenty-four .II THE PEDAGGG 1919 lip- M 4 ll SAN MARCUS, TEXAS One Hundvred and Twenty-fiv 1 V 1 1' L,-'Q H311 395313-LMQQG ww jp- ! Although we lost a few games the number we won more than made up for it. All players displayed great skill in foot ball tactics during the year but a few of these were unusual players and must be given credit for the excellent playing that they did. Captain Williams, better known by the name of Squatty, kept up the team by his dashing runs with the ball, which frequently resulted in a touch-down. C. L. Wren of Texas City must be classed as an exceptional star, when once loose, with the ball there was no possibility of the opposing team preventing his crossing the goal. Quarterback Pete Shands must be given credit for his good head work in that position. Nothing need be said of Hop 's and Soyor's extraordinary playing, for all students remember the many rahs they received from the grand stand. ln all we are well satisfied, our total scoring being 9-L to our opponents' 46. The first game of the season was with Southwestern University. Normal made a plucky fight but was outclassed with weight and seasoned players. The end runs of the University ran up a score of while the Normal was unable to cross the goal line. Next XVest Texas came here for a game. The teams were almost equally matched. However the goal line was crossed only once by the Normal, while West Texas crossed it twice. , Peacock Military College came next for a game. Peacock never got past our forty yard line, while most of the time we were in their territory, which finally resulted in our pushing them back being our goal line for a touch-back. S. M. B. A., our old rival, was our next opponent, S. M. B. A. was helpless be- fore our end runs, interferences and line attacks. Three touchdowns were made making Normal win by a score of 20 to 0. - 7 Next came the dummies. A touchdown was made in the first five minutes of the game. After this it was not a question of who could Win but how many scores the Normal could pile up. Score: 47 to 0. 1 The best game of the season was the Academy game on the Academy field. The first half was scoreless, but in the third quarter Academy crossed the line. It seemed as if Normal would go down in defeat but in the last five minutes C. L. Wren went in and turned the tide. In the last three minutes we crossed the goal line making the score 6 to 6. ' Our last game was with the Fourteenth Cavalry. We won by a score of 13 to 0. . . .ll sm Mxaeos, TEXAS Il ' One Hundred and Thirty 4 THBPEDAGOG 1919 lf: - BASEBALL INDTYIDUAL AVERAGE AB R Bat Av.
