WHISPERING PINES 1985 Like whispering footsteps in a forest of pines we move on but leave wonderful memories. ' $ Editor: Nancy Guy Co-editort Tammy Williams 33 jf VOLUME: 53 i § if ' vv ■ JKH t-; H vT i SOUTHWEST MISSISSIPPI JUNIOR COLLEGE SUMMIT, MISSISSIPPI 39666 WHISPERS OF LIFE Student life at SMJC is filled with an overwhelming array of emotions—from the show of pride for being a Southwest Bear to the thrill of victory after winning a tough football game. We came to SMJC nearing the end of summer, all frowns because school had started. We finally met new friends and swapped stories about old ones. Some of us even knew the same people—what a small world! The thrill of football season came and so did the chill of autumn, including all that falls between, but hopefully not our grades. We learned so much in such a short time—about our world, friends, and of growing pains. Some of us came out of our shells and experienced new and exciting endeavors. With eager achievement, we gained valuable experience, experience that will forever remain in our Whispers. 2 3 BEARING WITH US Bear NECESSITIES DAY—proper noun: comes from the combination of tradition with the support and generation of inevitabliness and freedom. The spirit of competition outside the classroom dawned once again last April and deemed many SMJC students champion for 1984 . Raw courage was displayed and challenged in fierce competition ranging from the prestigious spitting contest to the spirit teamwork used in strenuous tug-a-war. Other activities were the two-legged race, the Volkswagen push and the long jumps. Bear Necessities Day was a great success. Whether it was the thrill of victory or agony of defeat, everyone had a Bear-rrfic time! Pooped out from a long fun day! Steve Rawls shows SMJC spirit by shaving his chest. Every inch counts, Danny Monjure. Just a little harder, Brenda and Beverly! 4 w 5 MUSIC OF LIFE Many aspects of life emotionally move the student body of SMJC but none more than Music. From Lisa Whitmer leading the band during a rousing halftime show to Jeff Temple strumming the guitar, SMJC has a more than adequate supply of musical talent. Almost every activity we were involved in could be identified with some particular song which produced strong feelings and memories that will last a lifetime. 6 ► 7 Mixtures of Club Happenings So which one of you lovely ladies is going out with me tonight? The Southwest organizations find time to do more than just organize. They seem to have fun on every occasion. The Touch of Class lounging on campus, BSU at the Luau, our Whispering Pines staff deciding whose pictures are next; the basketball players on an evening stroll and who is that? Sanjay, our class president, chasing girls again. ' miV v • ■ ' ,• : • m r4t}i P 0$ - - 1 is r •, rf U v Aloha and Welcome to the Islands. You wouldn’t hit an unarmed man—would you, Dear? Stop holding me back! I want that girl! 8 OUR GANG Time for play, time for fun, a student’s work is never done. Take a test here; let’s study one minute more; may I sharpen my pencil before you shut the door. The Dean wants to see you, Now tell me, what have you done? Just say to him: (he’ll believe you), I was only having fun.” What’s your problem? Is this the real Michael Jackson, ladies? Fast times at Bear Tech. 10 1 STUDENT LIFE MUMBLINGS of that special day and just having fun with our friends are all elements of Student Life. Limber as a lean limbo lover Patience, hardwork, and occasional time for play are the subtle notes which help to prepare us for our future occupations. Education, music for our minds, working for our teachers, dreaming Trust me, I know what I’m doing. Mother warned me that this might happen. 12 j 13 Secrets of Romance Secrets were softly spoken as the students look longingly into each other’s eyes at the 1984 Spring Formal. Hand in hand or cheek to cheek the handsome beaus and beauties danced to the sounds of Pirahna. The band kept everyone in a romantic and high spirited mood that made the night one to remember. 14 I Sweat it Out” i Exercising has become very popular in 1984. And the SMJC students sweat it out! The cheerleaders work diligently on their muscles while cosmetologists and the Touch of Class practice their hand movements. The basketball and football players have an excellent way to soothe their back muscles. For those students who enjoy an easier exercise, dancing for the legs and reading for the mind may help. These exercises put our students in perfect shape. Make way for the lady with muscle! I love getting even. Stretch, Stretch, Stretch. 16 M 17 Whispers of Features When do whispers turn to yells? After winning third place in the Junior College Yearbook contest, we believe the 1985 Whispering Pines will long recall every whisper a bear could think of. 40 r (Top left) Nancy and Tammy enjoy the scenery, Randy Owens, of Alabama,” at the Annual Convention in Jackson. If you like action, the thrill and pride of winning, or the agony of defeat—SMJC is for you. Having experienced coaching staffs to guide the athletic individuals into well-equipped playing teams is not only something to whisper about; it’s everything a bear would want to shout about. Whispers of a Winning Season The Southwest Bears surprised everyone this year to finish the 1984 football season with a respectable 6-4 record. This was the first winning season at Southwest since the 1977 squad completed their campaign with a 7-3 mark. According to head coach Larry Kinslow, the key to his team’s winning season was the attitude of the players. They wanted to win and they went out and did it.” Defensive coach Buddy Bailey echoed Kinslow, saying Our kids wanted to win very badly and were willing to sacrifice to achieve their goals. These young men displayed courage and perserverance throughout the season, and I personally am very proud to have been a part.” Offensive coach Paul Dancsisin said that he and the other coaches were dealing with a group that showed alot of character and leadership.” He also said that he thought this group of players set a trend and built a strong foundation for tradition at Southwest.” For those of you who may have missed it and for those of you who simply want to remember, here is a look back at the fine season put together by our Southwest players and coaches: GAME 1 ' September 1 at Summit: Southwest 37 Coahoma 6 The Bears opened the new season on a winning note as they completely dominated their opposition. Denny Hughes led Southwest in rushing with 71 yards and two touchdowns. James Thompson and Robin Gibbs provided additional of¬ fensive scores while Roy Warford returned an interception for another. Gerald Giardina added a 42-yard field goal. GAME 2 ' September 8 at Perkinston: Gulf Coast 16 South¬ west 7 Despite the fact that their teammated on defense held the powerful Bulldogs to no first downs during the second half, the Southwest offense just could not seem to get it together. A first quarter pass for a touchdown from Mac Barrient to Scott Carnegie was all the Bears could master as they dropped their record to 1-1. GAME 3 ' September 13 at Summit: Southwest 23 Northeast 2 The Southwest offense and defense had it all together this night as the Bears began a trend of winning big following loss. While the Bears’ defense was holding Northeast to less than 150 yards of offense, the Southwest offense was putting on a show, led by Denny Hughes who ran for 125 yards and scored two touchdowns (one on a pass reception ). Also scoring for the Bears was Mac Barrient and Gerald Giardina (on a 25-yard field goal). GAME 4 ' September 20 at Summit: Southwest 21-Hinds 17 In their most exciting game of the season, the Bears held off a fierce fourth quarter rally by the Eagles to come away with their third win of the season. The win as led by James Thompson who carried the ball for 114 yards including a 70- yard touchdown. Denny Hughes and Michael Caston also scored. The Southwest defense, led by Kenny Miller and Danny Monjure, limited the Hinds running games to only 37 yards. GAME 5 ' September 29 at Wesson: Copiah-Lincoln 28 Southwest 0 Despite being two-point favorites in this game, the Bears could not get anything going, nor could they stop the Wolves from driving. The lone bright spot for Southwest was the 41.5 yard punting average of Darren Estes. GAME 6 ' October 4 at Senatobia: Southwest 35 Northwest 16 It was the Denny Hughes’ show this night as the explosive running back known as White Lightning” scored off kick¬ off returns of 99 and 93 yards as well as 51-yard run from scrimmage. Hughes finished the game with 127 yards rushing and over 200 yards on kickoff returns alone. Michael Caston and James Thompson also scored for the Bears. GAME 7 ' October 11 at Summit: Jones 18 Southwest 0 Playing their third Top 20 team of the season, the Bears found out how hard it can be to win when the offense takes the night off. The defense was forced to play extra hard and kept close a game that could have been a rout. GAME 8 ' October 20 at Summit: Southwest 21 East Central 0 The Bears made Homecoming ’84 a memorable one and kept alive their trend of winning big after a loss as they completely dominated the visitors from Decatur. Offensive leaders for Southwest were Johnny Robinson, who caught two touchdown passes from Mac Barrient, and Denny Hughes, who ran for another score. GAME 9 ' October 27 at Poplarville: Pearl River 23 South¬ west 2 A first quarter safety provided all the points for the Bears as they were outmuscled by the host Wildcats. Team leaders for Southwest were Denny Hughes, who rushed for 69 yards, and Danny Monjure, who recorded nine tackles. GAME 10 ' November 1 at Goodman: Southwest 20 Holmes. 8 Seeking the winning season that had eluded Southwest for seven years, the Bears let nothing stand in their way, not even a torrential rainstorm that plagued the game. James Thomp¬ son led the Bears’ running game with 78 yards while Michael Caston and Denny Hughes ran for one touchdown each. Darrin James recovered a Holmes fumble in the Bulldogs’ end zone for another Southwest score. —Mike Gunnell 58 First row (left to right): Cliff Simmons, Gerald Giardina, Eric Morris, Troy Whitting¬ ton, Scott Camiege, Michael Nunnery, Mac Barrient, Ty Whatley, Denny Hughes, Gary Butler, Robin Gibbs. Running fast, kicking hard, and practicing long hours surely paid off well for the team and the coaches. Coaches Kinslow, Bailey and Dancsisin showed us they could make bears out of our group, and SMJC bears they are. Along with the winning coaches and team, Bear spirit was at its peak, thanks to the cheerleaders, band, and bear supporters. Okay, group, now that football season’s over, let’s hit those books. Hey, freshmen, remember spring training’s just around the corner! Top left: Sophomore football players smile and pose for camera. Coach Kinslow paces nervously during a game. 60 POWER-TIME Beauties and the bears go together like honey in a bear’s paw. Whether it be a football workout or a practice for the cheerleaders, determination and excellence were the goals set by each group. Thanks to the coaches for putting together such a winning football team. Power-Time was felt by all everytime the bears hit the playing field and their opponents. Spirit scoring plays and high-screaming cheers were seen and heard at the home games, as well as at away games. Of the many extra activities and events that come around, Homecoming was the most ex¬ travagant. A week of total up-roar and excitement start¬ ed out on Monday morning. The designing of displays, the rehearsing of the marching band, taking pictures of the homecoming court, even¬ ing gowns and all, made the whole student body feel extra special. Tuesday rolled around with everyone’s spirits flying high with pride. All were hoping that the team’s practice sessions would pay off with a victory Saturday night. A pep rally on Wednesday was extremely nec¬ essary during Homecoming week, and all were prepared for such. The totally uninhibited stu¬ dents were very welcome at this kind of spirit¬ raising event. Even Charlie the bear seemed to feel a little rambunctious in the cool autumn air. Everyone loves a bear, especially a Southwest bear. Who could forget Thursday with the home¬ coming dance? The excitement continued to build and the glamour of the whole week started to reach its climax as Saturday finally arrived. This day would be long remembered by all who attended the banquet to which all alumni and sophomores were welcomed. At this gala occa¬ sion, four alumni were inducted into the hall of fame. Their speeches recalled their love, loyalty, and contributions for which they held SMJC responsible. In the evening, at 7:00 the crowds poured in. The lovely maids and their escorts waited for the homecoming ceremony. The band began to play; each couple walked onto the field. The homecoming queen was crowned, and the big¬ gest football game of the season began with a total up roar. DISPLAYS OF HOMECOMING 1984 Along with the week of Homecoming activi¬ ties comes the decorating of displays. Each dis¬ play was designed, decorated, and displayed by the various organizations and departments of SMJC. For this year’s theme, ’Take a Look at us Now”, was chosen. With this in mind each com¬ mittee went to work and the results were as¬ tounding. This display was done by the sophomore class officers and represented the Math and Science Building. 66 67 . . . THAT’S WHAT FRIENDS ARE FOR . . . Seeing is believing and at SMJC, you don’t need glasses to see who your friends are. A place to set your cat and call home; a place to gather and chat during OPEN HOUSE; a smile and a peck on the cheek—SMJC, that’s what friends are for. Waiting for any male visitors? Time for a noon meal, Garfield? Checkers, anyone? i fi 68 69 70 I li Homecoming Dance: Record Hit The week of Homecoming is always special. It’s a time for showing your true school spirit, a time for a fabulous football game, the reuniting of alumni and a time for the homecoming dance. What a smash hit the homecoming dance was, complete with a bowl of punch, elegantly dressed faculty and student-body and the Top-Notch Show which provided music and lights. For those who attended, they jumped for Van Halen, saw a little Purple Rain”, and danced their little hearts and feet away. Remember football team, you guys got to stay out late. Oh wow,” until 12:00 midnight. Get down on it, get down on it! Swing time: cheek-to-cheek. A couple of couples. 71 72 I HOMECOMING It was like a cloak enshrouding the campus of Southwest. This feeling of victory persisted the entire week of homecoming. ’Take a look at us now” could not express the euphoria that had been building up within the students! The queen, Nancy Guy, and her court pro¬ vided a royal sparkle by highlighting the final homecoming festivities. Nancy is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Guy of Ruth. Nancy at¬ tended North Pike High School where she was selected a campus favorite, most beautiful, and a member of the math and science team. She was elected vice-president of the Beta club, vice- president of the Student Council, and captain of the cheerleader squad. At SMJC Nancy was elected freshman maid and a campus beauty. She is a member of PTK and has served on the SMJC Azaela Court. Nancy is editor-in-chief of the 1985 Whispering Pines. Shari Audry Blalock is the Student Body Maid for 1984. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Blalock of Liberty. She is a member of annual staff and a football cheerleader at South¬ west. Margaret Shannon Graves, sophomore maid, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Graves of Tylertown. At SMJC Shannon is active on the tennis team, Touch of Class danceline, and was a stagehand dance last year. Sophomore maid Alison Laverne Mote is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Mote of the Navilla community. At SMJC Alison is a mem¬ ber of the marching band, stage band, chorus, Dynamics, and SGA. She is also active in BSU, BSU council, and BSU ensemble. Allyson Leigh Harrell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tyrone Harrell, is a freshman maid. She is from Gillsburg and attended Greensburg High School and Amite School Center. Miss Harrell was voted beauty, Campus Favorite, Friendliest, and football maid. She was a cheerleader and a member of FBLA. At SMJC Allyson is a cheer¬ leader. Lisa Carol Polk, also a freshman maid, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Polk of McComb. She is a member of the Touch of Class danceline at SMJC. The 1984 SMJC Football Maid is Patricia Ann Havard of Natchez. She is the daughter of Hilton and Dee Havard and Jonnie and William Dupry. MEN’S BASKETBALL Quick moves, high-jumping scorers, and lots of athletic concentration helped the SMJC men’s basketball team to numerous wins during the 1984- 85 season. These girls are tough and it showed in every game of the 1984- 85 basketball season. Whether they won or lost—determination, the hunger to win, and the try never lost its glory. In the whispers of success—cooperation, team-work, and sportsmanship are the final touches needed to undertake any endeavor—A Lady Bear knows. Below: Sharon stretches for the shot. Lady Bear Basketball The 1984-85 Lady Bears have had a great sea¬ son of basketball. Through the waiting for a new coach to the tournament times, these gals held- up strong. With the great coaching ability of Dennis Sims the ladies learned how to achieve points through professionalism and ability. Laura looks to throw the ball. Sharon Felder goes up for a shot! 80 81 I WHISPERS OF ACADEMICS Whispers of one’s own thoughts reflect the academics stressed at SMJC. These same whispers motivate and direct knowledge-hungry individuals upon their own road to success. For as it was written in Proverbs in the Living Bible: Teach a child to choose the right path, and when he is older, he will remain upon it. That is the sole purpose of SMJC and its dedicated faculty: to influence the never-ending quest for knowledge and excellence, to teach these principles and how to apply them practically, and to help understand and direct the world towards perpetual peace and prosperity. 82 Jan Aaron Arcell Addison Cori Albritton Tanya Allen Kenneth Barkman Mac Barrient Tiffany Beckette Rene Belsom Chuck Best Shari Blailock Shari Blalock Penny Boyte Darden Brady Jeff Brent Brenda Bridges Angie Brown Hugh Brown Jeff Brown Barbara Brumfield Calvin Brumfield Joel Brumfield Ricky Brumfield Kim Bullock Darryl Busbin Mark Butler Kathryn Byrd Cathy Cagle Naomi Carpenter Darryl Carr WHISPERS OF ... Ask about any freshman or sophomore about the English department at S.M.J.C. and you’ll probably get a lemon thrown at you. Carrying around and writing about a lemon is just one of the requirements of one of the English profes¬ sors at Southwest, Mrs. Craig. English and literature professors require in- depth research and these activities help students appreciate and understand the fine art of gram¬ mar and an old-world, as well as contemporary literature. Bryan Mathematics-Science Com¬ plex was built in 1969 along the west bank of Bear Lake. This facility houses five laboratories; two biology laboratories; a hundred-student ca¬ pacity master lecture auditorium and an audio¬ tutorial laboratory. Most of the science courses are taught in this building. Here is where the basic complexities of Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Micro-Biology, and Organic Chemistry are explained, examined, and tested. Here one would find Mr. Turner explaining Trigo¬ nometry problems, or Mr. Calhoun analyzing Calculus equations. Other Math courses include Algebra, Real Numbers, and Business Math. These courses are also taught in various other buildings on the SMJC campus. 105 LIBRARY The Library-Learning Resources Center, opened in the fall of 1977 to provide a book collection for all curricula-academic, vocational, and technical. With its approximately 30, 300 volumes, some 2,033 non-print items and 134 periodical subscriptions, it houses the main sources of recreational and informative material for the students and faculty of SMJC. Along with its book, filmstrip, and video tape collection, the famed Mississippi Room, a work room, a carrel room, a media control room, a media classroom, a typing room, a microfilm room, and several study rooms are available and open to all the student body. Seventy-four pints of plasma were extracted from volunteers consist¬ ing of SMJC students and staff. As an incentive to donate the much-needed blood, free head- bands and chances to win a door prize were given out. When all was over, a drafting student of McComb walked off with the prize of an AM two-band stereo-radio cassette player. Another blood drive was held during the spring semester. Along with the prizes awarded, each donor received a card which entitled the donor’s immediate family and himself coverage for six months of unlimited blood if needed in case of an accident. A pint of blood isn’t much to give up—it may save a life. Top left: Hiram Smith, the winner of the Walkman radio given away during the blood drive, smiles as he poses with Kelly and Dawn. The chief purpose of this course is to train hair de¬ signers with the abilities to became proficient as a cosmetology. Demonstrations, practice on mannequins, and beginning practice on fellow students provides practical experiences to each student. Professional ethics, good-grooming, visual poise, personality development, hairstyling, chemistry, and salon management are several other courses to which the students of cosme¬ tology are introduced . V, - Above: Robert Spillman gets his curls cut off. 110 Music Department The S.M.J.C. band is composed of all quali¬ fied students who wish to participate, and is maintained to furnish music for athletic events, student activities, and various community events. This is just one of the many branches of the S.M.J.C. music department. Courses in music history bring students a greater understanding and appreciation of the master works through study of the composers and their place in history by means of illustrated lectures and recorded music, as well as those that emphasize scales, techniques, and literature for instruments. Students may also take advantage of such courses designed for professional training in voice and piano. Left: Mr. Whit is excited about the stage band show. Below: Smile for a song! SHOW 28 FI ML M ic I VO-TECH The Vocational-Technical department is one of the best equipped facilities of its kind in the state. It offers students educational opportuni¬ ties by which they may gain knowledge. This in turn strengthens their capabilities within the work force of skilled craftsmen. Such courses include that of Technical Data Processing, Law Enforcement, Marketing, Mer¬ chandising and Management Development, and Secretarial Training. Within the Vocational education spectrum of SMJC, automotive mechanics, building trades, cosmetology, diesel mechanics, heating, refrig¬ eration and air conditioning, industrial electric¬ ity-electronics, machine shop, practical nursing, rotary drilling, vocational drafting, secretarial training, and welding prepare students for qual¬ ity positions within the real world by using pro¬ cedures to instill theories and practices. I 112 I 113 The Whispers of . . . being a leader and a supporter. These administrators help guide a student to a goal. They teach when needed, supervise student activities, and participate in public relations programs. They also set up short-term courses for non-traditional students and manage the financial matters of the college. The Voice of Southwest Mr. Horace Carruth Holmes has been a familiar figure at Southwest Mississippi Junior College for more than thirty-one years as of June 30, 1984. Through the years he has climbed the ladder of success from the positions of instructor, basketball coach, Dean of Men, Dean of Instruction, Vice-Presi¬ dent of the institution to his present position as President of SMJC. President Holmes was born in Belden, Mississippi. His education includes an AA degree from Jones Junior College, a B.S. and a M.A. degree from the University of Sou thern Mississippi. He studied also at Mississippi State University. This sensitive and fun-loving man is a deacon at the First Baptist Church in Summit, a former Lions Club member, and a U.G.F. representative. He is a devoted family man which anyone would acknowledge after one look at his home life which includes his lovely wife, LeFay McLelland Holmes, and two adult sons. President Holmes also has one precious granddaughter, Kathryn Miley Holmes. President Holmes has stated that his favorite sports are base¬ ball, basketball, and football; these however, are stated in no preferential order. President Holmes stated, Our student body is made up of a very heterogeneous group, bringing divergent interests and needs, as well as educational backgrounds to this campus. I personally feel we have the finest group of students to be found on any college campus in the United States.” And though President Holmes may appear at times to be all-business, his person¬ able style comes through when he meets students on campus and calls almost ev¬ eryone by first name. i 117 Dean of Instruction, Registrar Mr. Charles R. Breeland is the chief academic officer, who has the task of coordinating the academic programs of the college with general regulations and policies, giving him the title of the Dean of Instruction. As registrar also he keeps and updates all records of SMJC students several times a year. Dean Breeland is an alumnus of SMJC and has a B.S. and a M. Ed. degree from the Universi¬ ty of Southern Mississippi. He is a member of the First Baptist Church in Summit and is secre¬ tary of the Summit Rotary Club. Some interesting whispers about Dean Bree¬ land are of his fondness for ice hockey, farming, collecting stamps and coins, and the solitary art of reading. Southwest is a great college,” Dean Breeland stated, It has a rich tradition of being concerned with students, and of providing quality educa¬ tion, and of fostering personal development.” Dean of Students Dean Jerry Reid first came to the office of the Dean of Students at SMJC in 1969. His previous experiences equipped him for the job of overseeing all student activities since he was principal and coach of football, basketball, and baseball at Run- nelstown High School in Runnelstown, Mississippi. He earned the B.S. and M.Ed. from the University of Southern Mississippi. Dean Reid and his family attend the Summit United Method¬ ist Church. He is a member of the Lions Club. Other activities and hobbies in which Dean Reid actively participates include fishing and hunting. His favorite sports are football, basketball, and baseball. Being an alumnus of SMJC, Dean Reid believes that the students at Southwest are mature and well adjusted. Most of the students are interested in getting a good education. SOUTHWEST MISSISSIPPI JR. The dedicated men who make up this force take their jobs seriously. These men take great pride in their work which shows in the quality of work produced. Every right and rule is taken into consideration with each student. They are the cafeteria personnel. As important members of this institu¬ tion’s auxiliary unit, they prepare the nutritious meals we devour each day. A dedicated team they are—full of pride with a devotion to service with a smile. The lady behind all this is our experienced dieti¬ cian, MRS. EDNA POPE. Cafeteria workers are: Odell Houston, Martha Young, Leola Gordon, Mary Robinson, Barbara Quin, Sylvia Brown, Lee Gat¬ lin, Carrie Sue Allan, Lena Jacobs, Jo Baker, Ava Albritton, Janie Magee, Annie Pearl Jackson, Andrew Woods, Rose Crosley, Quin McDonell, and Faye Stockton. The planting of fresh-living flowers around the flag pole has been one endeavor that blossomed this year. In presenting a neat and clean appearance of the student body and the campus, SMJC will only draw more attention to the fact that it is one of the better institutions within the United States. We blew them away!” Then an argu¬ ment ensues because the other classmate thinks that Pear River beat us that year. I hope that the classmates will grab this annual, and it will serve as a record to settle the argument and to record their good times at SMJC during the 1984-85 school year. This annual is the product of many hours of hard work by many people. I would like to thank all of those people who made this annual possi¬ ble. First of all, I would like to thank my advisers Mrs. Craig and Mrs. Johnson, for without that extra push they gave me, deadlines may not have been met. I would especially like to thank my assistant editor Tammy Williams, who helped shoulder the responsibility for the annual. How could I forget Jim! Jim Albritton did not know what he was getting into when he stepped into the first annual meeting. Although I did not know Jim, I recognized talent and definitely kept him busy. Even after all the work and the long nights at school before a shipment, Jim never complained. He just gave me one of those smiles and whispered, “You owe me one, Nancy!” Ac¬ tually I owe Jim a million. Thanks again, Jim, for the hard work and also for becoming a true close friend. Many other students were important in the making of this yearbook. I always could count on typing from Carla Moak. She is lucky that I didn’t ask her to type this, but something has to be a surprise. Others who helped in typing were Penny Boyte and Kelly Bourgeois. I’d also like to thank Dawn Punchard and Mary Levins. They did every assorted task, whether it was copy or layout design, that I assigned them. I give a special thanks to Naomi Carpenter, who used her creative talent in writing most of the copy of this annual. I hope that she won’t compare my writing to hers—there is no comparison! Other working members of the staff include Stacy Milton, Tina Oxholm, Allen Brown, and Terry Pigott. Thanks to each of you members for your con¬ tributions to this yearbook. Last, but definitely not least, I’d like to thank Robert Spillman, Bill Greer, and Jeff Temple. They were always on the scene when the campus action took place. They never complained about late nights in the darkroom or having to skip a date to take last minute pictures. A special thanks goes to my suitemates—Sharon Martin, Sheila Burris, and Robin Sullivan—who put up with me during the months of designing this yearbook. At times I was not the easiest person to be around, but they always managed to make me smile and encouraged me to work harder to finish this yearbook. Also I’d like to thank them for the help they gave me in drawing layouts, both in the room and at Kenna Hall. I would also like to thank my family. They were the ones who had to hear my complaints and moans every day. Instead of letting my attitude depress them, they would just listen, understand me, then change my outlook to hopefulness. Thanks again, and I love you. I hope when you, my classmates, look through this book, you will hear all the whispers of the memories of a terrific school year—1984-85! My Love and Thanks, Nancy Guy As the 1984 school year draws to a close and summer is on its way, I hope you will take this book of whispers down and peek at it. This peek will be only the beginning of refreshing your memories of the 1984-’85 school year at Southwest Mississippi Junior College; in the years to come the book will be progressively more meaningful. In preparing this yearbook Nancy and I have tried to select pictures and copy that would reflect the year and be of most interest to the faculty, staff, and student body. To all the people who have helped us I would like to say Thank you . I would like to express a special thanks to Naomi, Dawn, Kellie, Jim, and Carla for all their help throughout the agony and ecstasy” in the prepara¬ tion of this book of memories for you. I would also like to thank the photographers, Robert, Bill, and Jeff, for their help and patience. Also, thanks, Robert, for your work of encouragement when it seemed I was totally exasperated. I hope you enjoy this book of whispers as much as I have enjoyed having a part in preparing it for you. Tammy Williams Assistant editor 151 The 1984 presidential election started nearly two years ago when Walter Mondale began his long and historic run for the White House. Wal¬ ter Mondale was the early favorite to receive the Democratic nomination for president, but was unexpectedly defeated in the New Hampshire primary by Colorado Senator Gary Hart. Mon¬ dale and eight other candidates including Hart, Jackson, Hollings, Cranston. Glen, McGovern and Askew fought out their differences in a se¬ ries of debates and primaries across the country resulting in Walter Mondale’s clinching the nomination. Meanwhile the Republicans confi¬ dently knew that Ronald Reagan would be their nominee. As the Democratic Convention ap¬ proached, Mondale began interviewing candi¬ dates for Vice-President and just before the con¬ vention began he announced his historic choice of Congresswoman Geraldine Ferraro, the first woman to run for national office. After the eu¬ phoria of the Democratic Convention, Walter Mondale and Geraldine Ferraro surpassed Ron¬ ald Reagan and George Bush in the polls. Later in August at the Republican Convention in Dal¬ las, President Reagan and George Bush were unanimously renominated. The issues in the ’84 race ranged from Walter Mondale’s deficit reduction program including his promise to raise taxes on the rich and big corporations to the constitutional issue of reli¬ gion in politics. Congresswoman Ferraro was attacked for her pro-choice stand on abortion and for questions concerning her tax status. President Reagan was blamed for not achieving an arms control agreement with the Soviet Union and for his Star Wars missile defense program which proposed putting defensive mis¬ siles in space. The candidates agreed on three televised de¬ bates—two presidential debates and one vice- presidential debate between George Bush and Geraldine Ferraro. After the Republican conven¬ tion, polls constantly showed Mondale-Ferraro behind Reagan-Bush by large percentages. Mon¬ dale and Ferraro had to do well in the debates to have any chance of taking the White House. The first presidential debate took place in Kansas City and the consensus was that Mondale won the debate. As a result of the first debate, ques¬ tions arose over whether President Reagan was too old to govern the country. The Mondale- Ferraro ticket picked up momentum as a result of the first debate. The vice-presidential debate took place in Philadelphia and most people thought it ended in a tie between Bush and Ferraro. In the second presidential debate, Presi¬ dent Reagan faired much better and as a result was perceived to have won. During the last two weeks of the campaign, polls showed President Reagan in command of an overwhelming lead. However, Walter Mon¬ dale and Geraldine Ferraro began attracting huge crowds. The predicted Reagan landslide came about on election day, November 6. Ron¬ ald Wilson Reagan won the biggest electoral college victory in history. President Reagan and George Bush had 525 electoral votes or 49 states to Walter Mondale and Geraldine Ferraro’s 13 votes coming from Minnesota and the District of Columbia. The popular vote was Reagan- Bush 53,428,357 or 5996 to Mondale-Ferraro’s 36,930,923 or 41% of the vote. The Reagan landslide didn’t provide very long coattails for Congressional and Senatorial candi¬ dates. In Mississippi ' s fourth district, Democrat¬ ic Congressman Wayne Dowdy retained his seat. His opponent was David Armstrong. The Mis¬ sissippi Senate race pitted popular former Demo¬ cratic Governor William Winter against popular Republican Senator Thad Cochran. Winter lost his bid for Cochran’s Senate seat. Mississippi was by no means ignored by the national candidates. Walter Mondale and Geral¬ dine Ferraro began their campaign for the presi¬ dency in front of the Governor’s Mansion in Jackson. President Reagan held a huge rally on the Gulf Coast and Vice-President Bush came to Natchez in support of Congressional candidate David Armstrong. Jesse Jackson spent a lot of time in Mississippi encouraging unregistered blacks to register and to vote. Despite the Mon¬ dale-Ferraro and Jackson effort, the states elec¬ toral votes went for President Reagan. The Southwest Mississippi Junior College stu¬ dent body also got into the political act. The campus was decked out with political posters and bumper stickers. Every student had his own strongly felt views on where the country was and where we should be taking it. You only had to mention the name Reagan or Mondale and you were assured of getting ail sorts of reactions from hate to love and surprisingly enough, very little apathy. 152 —On June 6,1984, the world observed the 40th Anniversa¬ ry of the D-Day invasion. President Reagan, in London attending an economic conference, and many veterans of World War II traveled to France in commemoration of D- Day. —The Statue of Liberty was closed this year so that much needed repairs could be performed on her interior and exteri¬ or. The Statue will be reopened in 1986—on her 100th anni¬ versary. —The worst mass murder in U.S. history took place this year in San Ysidro, California. James Huberty, a 41-year-old man described as a gun nut walked into a McDonald ' s restaurant carrying a 9-MM Uzi semiautomatic rifle, a 12- gauge slide-action shotgun and a 9 MM semiautomatic pis¬ tol. He told the patrons to get down on the floor or he would kill somebody. They did as he said but he then opened Fire and killed 21 people. The shooting was over in five minutes as the screams of children died out. Seventy-Five minutes after Huberty started shooting, a SWAT-team marksman shot him dead. The McDonald’s corporation contributed one million dollars to the survivors and the San Ysidro McDonald ' s was torn down. The land was donated as a park but the question of why Huberty decided to kill remains unknown. —John DeLorean was acquitted by a federal jury in Los Angeles of conspiracy to deal in cocaine. His trial raised serious questions about the legitimacy of the governments use of sting” operations. —Vanessa Williams, the First black Miss America, lost her title and her crown this year after nude photographs of her were published in Penthouse Magazine. Her successor was Suzette Charles, also black. Vanessa Williams was the first Miss America to lose her crown in pageant history. —This year we saw the completion of the Vietnam War Memorial. A statue of three soldiers was added in sight of the long black granite wall which holds the names of the Viet¬ nam dead. —Margaret Thatcher, her cabient, and her conservative party were the targets of a Irish Republican Army bomb placed in Brightons Grand Hotel in England. The British conservative party was holding its annual convention when the bomb blast ripped through the hotel. Prime Minister Thatcher escaped unharmed but 38 others were injured or killed. England once again was forced to face the reality of Irish terrorism. —American and foreign television broadcasted pictures on the tragic famine in Ethiopia and as a result Americans and people from around the world sent huge amounts of aid to help starving Ethiopians. The extent of the famine in Africa is incomprehensible. Foreign aid has had a hard time getting to the starving people because of the remoteness of Africa, The aid was too little, too late for the millions who have already died in the African desert. It hasn’t rained in parts of Africa for years and the situation doesn ' t appear to be getting better. Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was brutally shot to death as she walked to her ofFice in New Delhi by two of her personal guards. The guards were sikhs and they appar¬ ently shot her because she had earlier ordered an attack on their sacred temple. Her assassination divided India pitting sikhs against Hindus which caused bloody battles in the streets of India. Dignitaries from around the world attended her funeral. Her body was cremated on T. V. before a national audience. The assassination of Prime Minister Gandhi was but another in a long string of assassinations which have taken the world by surprise, shock and outrage. Indira Gand¬ hi’s son took her post as Indian Prime Minister. —On October 26, in Loma Linda, California, at the Loma Linda Medical Center a tiny baby known only as Baby Fae underwent the most successful animal heart transplant in history. Baby Fae was born with an underdeveloped heart. Her only chance for life revolved around the transplat of a baboon heart because at the time a human heart wasn ' t available for transplant. After careful consideration, her mother agreed and the transplant took place.. Baby Fae captured the love and imagination of the world during her 21 day life. With the animal heart, Baby Fae had a life expectan¬ cy of 21 years but instead she lived only 21 days. Controversy arose because the transplant involved an animal heart. Ani¬ mal rights groups protested as well as others who said it was experimentation at the cost of Baby Fae, Baby Fae died Thursday November 16 at 9 P.M. after her kidneys failed and her heart became unstable—she failed to respond to revital¬ ization efforts. -William Schroeder became only the second human after Barney Clark to receive an artificial heart. The operation took place in Louisville, Kentucky, at the Humana Medical Cen¬ ter. It is hoped that Schroeder will be able to continue a normal life at home. The World of Rivers: Fresh Water as a Source of Life was the theme of the 1984 Louisana World Exposition. The fair was located on the Mississippi river at New Orleans in the ware¬ house district near the French quarter. It was expected that more than 12 million visitors from around the world would come to see the interna¬ tional pavilions, ride the rides and soak up the unique atmosphere that only New Orleans could offer. However, the estimated 12 million visitors didn ' t materialize and the fair experienced eco¬ nomic trouble. In its last week it declared bank¬ ruptcy. Many students from SMJC were able to take advantage of the wonderful opportunity they had to see the world through the fair. The fair began on May 12 with a spectacular opening ceremony and ended on November 11, 1984. 153 ENTERTAINMENT Pop into the Union and sounds of Purple Rain by Prince and other variations of music blare from the jukebox. Look over to the pool tables and the daily pool sharks are busy beating their opponents. Other forms of entertainment can be f ound in McComb. Any Tuesday night one could find a gang from SMJC coming out of the Camelia Four Cinema. Wednesday and Thursday even¬ ings were crammed with almost every one rush¬ ing into Top Cat’s for nights of fun, friends, and dancing. LOS ANGELES OLYMPICS The Olympic torch burned brightly as it made its way from Greece to New York and finally on to Los Angeles where speed, grace, power and endurance were prevailing factors in the 1984 Summer Olympics. Americans were a captive audience as Olympic athletes paraded their skills and abilities across the television screens. The gold rush was on as American athletes took gold medal after gold medal in an endless series of triumphant wins. Heroes and heroines like Greg Louganis, Mary Lou Retton, and Carl Lewis will forever be remembered. Others like Mary Decker who tragically fell during her race with Zola Budd and Gabriela Anderson-Schiess, the Swiss marathoner who looked liked she barely made it to the finish line alive, will also be remembered. The Olympic Games opened with a spectacular ceremony complete with music, balloons, and a man riding a jet pack. The Games ended in the same style as billions watched fireworks from around the world, heard the music of Lionel Richie and saw the athletes of the world dance and sing together in the L.A. Coliseum. PATRIOTISM This year way well go down in history as the year American patriotism returned. Its return was spurred on by two flag waving political party conventions and the Los Angeles Summer Olympics where crowds went flag waving wild. The American flag made its way into television commercials and the entire advertising cam ' paigns. People began to feel good about Amer¬ ica again and confidence in the American system returned. Americans now display the flag, cele¬ brate the Fourth of July with enthusiasm and every chance they get, proclaim their indepen¬ dence and their patriotism. FASHION You might say anything and everything goes great together in the eyes of the more fashion- oriented person , said one SMJC student. On the campus of SMJC the diverse styles of the young men and women are as wild and or stately as those seen on any college campus with¬ in the United States. From punker-lockers to picky-preppies, and other occasional go-betweens, the fashions re¬ flect the changing times and attitudes of a new American society. The continual mixture of oth¬ er cultural and innovative-somewhat-rebellious- influences give rise and meaning to the phrase An art of dressing.
