After the final exams ... Not only does college life extend into the evening, it also covers the entire summer. When most fall and spring se¬ mester students leave for their long-awaited summer va¬ cation, many SMJC staff members are preparing the cam¬ pus for such things as band camps, girls’ and boys’ basketball camps, and the ever-present summer school for those who either couldn’t handle the regular sessions or just couldn’t bear leaving good ol’ Bear Tech for three months. Consider the fact that while the majority of the regular session students are basking in the sun, water- skiing, or possibly even working, loyal staff members are here at school babysitting all summer making sure that camp members know how to dribble correctly or twirl a rifle in the right manner. So when fall semester rolls around and sitting in a classroom is the most unappealing thing in the world, remember to give the teacher a break. He or she may not have had one in a while. 17

After the sun goes down ... Contrary to popular belief, college life doesn’t end when the last class of the day is over. That ' s when the magic of college life really gets started. Afternoons at the Student Union are particularly busy with ping-pong games, pool competitions, and friends chatting about everything from their most recent night out to Mrs. Pope’s fried chicken. Outside the Union, students can be found in a number of places. Besides the socializing around campus, football and basketball practice are usually in progress, and later on in the evening, the cheerleaders’ voices and the mellow sounds of the Bear band can be heard echoing across campus. Almost every night offers a different schedule of events at SMJC. Tuesday night is a great night for dating couples and for those who are on a low-income budget. For one thing, it’s $1.50—night at the movie, and for a low-cost, filling meal before the show, one of the pizza places offers “all you, can eat” at one super- low price. On Wednesday nights, it’s pretty difficult to find anyone on campus. That’s the night many SW students choose to socialize off campus. Every night, except game nights, of course, many of the football players are making their moves at the girls’ dorm. Whether a student enjoys being with a crowd, being alone, or being with someone spe¬ cial, the magic of friendship can be easily found at South¬ west. o 16

being in the spotlight. Every year there are a chosen few that become the most outstanding on campus and are placed, so to speak, “in the spotlight.” Whether through their outward appearance or through their inward personality, they seem to be the ones whom everyone else on campus knows and admires. Each of these students began the year as all the others, but when election time came around, they were the ones who immediately came to mind. This doesn’t mean that they are any more important; it simply says that each of them has some¬ thing special—a certain magic about his personality that seemed to win the hearts of those they met. With this recognition by their classmates, a different kind of magic surfaced—the kind that can come only from deep inside. It starts from within, buried in the heart, fighting a path to the surface. The stage is set, the curtains are opened, and the lights click on. That magic from within ap¬ pears, bursting with excitement. The spotlight . . . the warm feeling . . . the magic.
