Demg a Bear. Every day at Southwest Mississippi Junior Col¬ lege in 1984, has become a precious memory. These memo¬ ries become part of us, fondly remembered and cherished through the years. All the laughter and tears blend to make a yesterday. As 1984 becomes history, it will yet stay with us forever. Entertainment (by the athletic teams, band, cheer¬ leaders, Homecoming) provided a lighter side to college life and allowed students a break from routine. Opportunities to meet people, experience new things, and maybe discover a new side of themselves abounded. Friends, pep rallies, foot¬ ball games, basketball games, tests, dating, finances, elec¬ tions, dances, holidays, fashion, dorm life—all make the magic of student life. This picture sums up the canoe races on “Play Day.” Evette Sturgeon and teammates show their muscle power. Mike McDaniel takes a break from competition. David Dykes and Mark Brian prepare for the race. Anyone happen to have a bucket? Bear spirit was high, especially during tug-of-war. The shores of Bear Lake were a great place to soak up some rays. SCENES FROM THE LIFE OF A BEAR. 11 ON ATTENDING COLLEGE “The experience that makes the deep¬ est difference in any boy or girl is the experience of going to college. It is there that the man, the woman, is cre¬ ated; for it is there that thinking begins, and in our society there is no more no¬ ticeable difference than the difference between thinkers and non-thinkers. The difference has been called magic. There is no exaggeration in the term; it refers to the change that all of us desire in so far as we comprehend that the specific, the distinguishing quality of any person is the quality of his mind.” —Mark Van Doren The Magic of .. ■ keeping the Bears fired up, making a first down, showing your Bear spirit, doing what you do best, stopping your opponent on fourth and inches. 13 The Magic of .. feeling the excitement in the air during Homecoming week, learning to live with your roommate, cheering for your favorite team, relaxing with a game of pool, having the winning hand in a friendly game of cards, knowing that all the practice is worth it, living in the dorm. 15 After the sun goes down ... Contrary to popular belief, college life doesn’t end when the last class of the day is over. That ' s when the magic of college life really gets started. Afternoons at the Student Union are particularly busy with ping-pong games, pool competitions, and friends chatting about everything from their most recent night out to Mrs. Pope’s fried chicken. Outside the Union, students can be found in a number of places. Besides the socializing around campus, football and basketball practice are usually in progress, and later on in the evening, the cheerleaders’ voices and the mellow sounds of the Bear band can be heard echoing across campus. Almost every night offers a different schedule of events at SMJC. Tuesday night is a great night for dating couples and for those who are on a low-income budget. For one thing, it’s $1.50—night at the movie, and for a low-cost, filling meal before the show, one of the pizza places offers “all you, can eat” at one super- low price. On Wednesday nights, it’s pretty difficult to find anyone on campus. That’s the night many SW students choose to socialize off campus. Every night, except game nights, of course, many of the football players are making their moves at the girls’ dorm. Whether a student enjoys being with a crowd, being alone, or being with someone spe¬ cial, the magic of friendship can be easily found at South¬ west. o 16 After the final exams ... Not only does college life extend into the evening, it also covers the entire summer. When most fall and spring se¬ mester students leave for their long-awaited summer va¬ cation, many SMJC staff members are preparing the cam¬ pus for such things as band camps, girls’ and boys’ basketball camps, and the ever-present summer school for those who either couldn’t handle the regular sessions or just couldn’t bear leaving good ol’ Bear Tech for three months. Consider the fact that while the majority of the regular session students are basking in the sun, water- skiing, or possibly even working, loyal staff members are here at school babysitting all summer making sure that camp members know how to dribble correctly or twirl a rifle in the right manner. So when fall semester rolls around and sitting in a classroom is the most unappealing thing in the world, remember to give the teacher a break. He or she may not have had one in a while. 17 being in the spotlight. Every year there are a chosen few that become the most outstanding on campus and are placed, so to speak, “in the spotlight.” Whether through their outward appearance or through their inward personality, they seem to be the ones whom everyone else on campus knows and admires. Each of these students began the year as all the others, but when election time came around, they were the ones who immediately came to mind. This doesn’t mean that they are any more important; it simply says that each of them has some¬ thing special—a certain magic about his personality that seemed to win the hearts of those they met. With this recognition by their classmates, a different kind of magic surfaced—the kind that can come only from deep inside. It starts from within, buried in the heart, fighting a path to the surface. The stage is set, the curtains are opened, and the lights click on. That magic from within ap¬ pears, bursting with excitement. The spotlight . . . the warm feeling . . . the magic. wBsM w wflSliH 1 V T i : ' ■. rWK W- r IJiaaPWfAl k f 1 1 £ « , ■ ' , 1 IJ i ■ L 1 yp k v iAa 1 • M A 1 «• ’ jfl H SKgR, ' ] y ! Sports brought out the competitive nature in everyone, both on and off the field or court. The spirit was enhanced not only among the athletes and cheerleaders but also in the stands as well, where the enthusiasm of Bear supporters heightened the occasion. Participation is a great part in sports, but discipline and most of all dedication to their individual talent make an athlete an athlete. The magic •ies in the fact that with the athlete and the support of fans, athletic competition will always remain. c . SOUTHWEST BEARS 17 Carl Scott rushed for 107 yards and scored a touchdown, and Cedric Miller chipped in 83 yards as the Bears won their first game of the year in a 17-14 decision over the Northeast Tigers in Summit. Spurred on by a loudly-cheering crowd hungry for a victory, the Bears scored on their first possession. The drive, which took 3 min¬ utes and 14 seconds covered 40 yards in 8 plays, culminating in Mac Barrient’s 3-yard pass to Gerard Caulfield at the 9:46 mark. Howev¬ er, with barely one minute gone in the second period, the Tigers punched in a score from 7 yards out, and the game was tied at 7. After an exchange of fumbles, the Bears drove 82 yards in 12 plays ALL on the ground. Carl Scott sprinted the final 20 yards for the score. The Bears got the ball back with 2:19 left in the half on their own 27-yard-line. Key receptions by Scott, Ken Carter, Curtis Ma¬ gee, and Caulfield moved the ball to the Tiger 9. On the final play of the half, Humberto Futch booted a 26-yard field goal to give the Bears a 17-7 lead. The Bear defense seemingly made a big play late in the third period when Steve Faust intercepted a Northeast pass and raced 55 yards to pay-dirt. However, interference was called on the Bears, and the score was nullified. The obviously discouraged Bear defense relaxed for a moment, and disaster struck as the Tiger quar¬ terback raced 46 yards on the option for a score. But in the fourth quarter, the Bear defense rose to the occasion and turned the troops from Booneville away, thus assuring Southwest of victory. —Lloyd Young 44 Below left: Spooks looked on as SW won their first, and only, game of the season. Anticipation filled the air as Spirit Week began. Each day of the week was accented with different dress codes, and as each day passed, the ex¬ citement built. The dance was held on Thursday night, and the cheerleaders sponsored a bon fire on Friday— the night before the arch-rivals, SMJC and Co-Lin met. October 15, 1983—The campus was filled with alumni from years past and present students made visitors welcome. Day quickly turned to night, and the moment we had waited for arrived. The maids moved slowly across the field with the climax coming at the crowning of the 1983 Homecoming Queen Lisa Thornton, by 1982 Queen Johna Greer. Minutes after the maids left the field, the Bears and the Wolves ran on. The coin was tossed, the ball was kicked, and the battle began. Un¬ fortunately the Bears came up short as the final sec¬ onds ran out. Even though the game was lost, the magic was still there—the magic of coming home. Left: B.J. Gerber Dr. Phillip R. The 8- member squad, with pep rallies, dances, and cheers, kept the Bear spirit and morale at a high peak throughout the season. Besides coaxing the footb all players to “Get fired up!” and adding their own style of coaching, the cheerleaders were re¬ sponsible for organizing pep rallies, painting signs to decorate the stadium, painting bust-through signs for the football team, and basically being the spirit leaders on campus as well as at games. It’s not as difficult as it seems, and there is a certain magical ability about leaving a mark, a symbol that says, “Someone was here.” A sure way to leave an impression anywhere is to take charge of a situation and become a leader. Of course, many people aren’t cut out for this and can leave just as impressive a mark on the world as the leader can. One thing is sure, though. Every¬ one here at SMJC has the potential to leave his print on the ground, and if the prints are deep enough, they will last forever. 84 ■I Whatever happened to Panama Jack and Levi Strauss? No, this wasn’t a preview of the 1984 fall fashions. SMJC dress codes were ignored during Spirit Week as students decked out in everything imag¬ inable. Hat and Tie Day began the week with Mix and Match, Punk Rock Day, Camouflage Day, and Jersey Day following. Not only did many students spray their hair every color of the rainbow for Punk Day, but five brave football players allowed one of their teammates to give them mohawks for the big game against rival Co-Lin. This time of year is always the most hectic with buying pre¬ sents, putting up the Christmas tree, and, most importantly, cramming for those final exams! This year the SGA thought it would be a good idea to have a Christmas dance to offer the students a night away from the books and other obligations. Well, it turned out to be a SUPER idea! Students turned out in abundance, and the dance floor filled quickly. It seemed that everyone was ready for a night to just let loose and be himself. The Gap Band and Prince were the favorites of the night, and by the time the clock struck midnight, stu¬ dents had used all excess energy. Lewis Health Occupations center, a modern two-story building, is located on the northwest section of the campus. It was named in honor of the late Henry L. Lewis and will be formally dedicated in 1984. Housing the Licensed Practical Nurs¬ ing, Associate Degree Nursing, and Emergency Medical Technician pro¬ grams, it provides two clinical laborato¬ ries, three large classrooms, a student lounge, a faculty lounge, a conference room, a library, and fourteen offices. There are ten ADN instructors and two LPN instructors in this center. The Nursing programs provided at Southwest should entice all those who believe not only in a good education, but believe also in providing care for those who are not able to care for themselves. —Beverly Brown 92 The dream for a Baptist Student Center at Southwest Junior College will soon be a reality. Completion date of the new center is February, 1984. The building, in the planning for over seven years, received the support of seventy Baptist churches, the tax-supporting counties of the SMJC area, including Pike, Walth¬ all, Amite, and Wilkinson, and much in¬ dividual support. This building will certainly be an asset to Southwest Mississippi Junior College. The BSU center will not “make” the BSU program, but will greatly enhance the program and its effectiveness. This ministry will be provided for all students, c urch groups, and others. It will be a place to come, not only to spend time for worship, for sharing in devotions, and for counseling, but also for recreation through socials and fellowship. The Southwest BSU director, Ed Abel, is at the center during the day. He states, The building is to be used by the students as a great place for Christian fellowship and will create a different atmosphere for student campus life.” —Beverly Brown On November 13, 1979, the first of a series of articles was printed in the PINE BURR about “Project Charlie.” The Student Government Association had begun to make plans for the im¬ provement of the SMJC mascot ' s cage. Despite lack of student support, the dif¬ ferent organizations of Southwest con¬ tinued to struggle to reach their goal. Now, almost three years later, the dream of “Project Charlie” is becoming a reality. Through numbers of dances and fund raisers sponsored by campus organiza¬ tions and donations from various sources, a total of over $2,500 has been accumulated in the ‘‘Project Charlie” fund. Although this amount may not cover the full cost of building, a new cage for Charlie, Business Director Bill Quin has stated that SMJC will cover the rest of expenses. No set cost was given to “Project Charlie,” but Bill Quin said, “Whatever it takes, we’re going to build it.” The new cage will be built according to zoo standards. The exterior will consist of a cyclone fence constructed of a heavy gauge wire. The cyclone fence will stand eight feet high and will be sur¬ rounded by a smaller fence several feet away. The smaller fence will be to keep little children (or anyone else) from get¬ ting hurt by being too close to the cage. The cage will be 720 sq. ft. with an addi¬ tional 160 sq. ft. house for Charlie to sleep in. The cage will be equipped with running water to drink, a poolbath to cool off in, and four drains to add to ease of management. The four drains being added will run directly to the school’s sewage system and should eliminate some of those odors coming from the direction of Charlie’s cage. There also will be a tree type fixture added to the cage to make Charlie feel more at home. —Alan Williams Through the McComb Noon Lions Club, two stu¬ dents, Becky Gerald and Bette-Anne Moore, had the opportunity to serve as youth exchange stu¬ dents this past summer in Canada. This is an annu¬ al event for two students from the McComb area. Through this program students are able to meet other students from fourteen different countries and visit several well-known places, such as the world’s largest free-standing building, the CN tower, the Ontario Science building, Niagara Falls, and Ripley’s Believe It or Not museum. There were horse races to go to, and on Sundays, since most students were Lutheran, the Lutheran church pro¬ vided for worship. At the close of the event, the Lions Club of that town gave the students a farewell party. Also, the students each had to give a speech at an 8-day camp. The speakers told interesting facts about their country’s traditions, government, and reli¬ gion. Becky commented of her experience, “I would encourage people to look into this program. It is a great opportunity to meet lifetime friends and see how people in other countries live.” Becky and Bette-Anne, foreground, made many new friends, such as Canadians Debbie and Daphne Eickemier. —Beverly Brown Not your Sanjay Madnani, a 21-year-old student from India, migrated to the United States in 1977. He said, “The education at SMJC is extremely good.” After spending this year at SMJC Sanjay intends to complete his Pre-Med major at the City University of New York. Though she speaks it well, she now real¬ izes that there is more to the English language than just the sounds. The principles of grammar are hard. Maria spends hours of study trying to comprehend all that is being taught. She was, however, surprised to find many SMJC stu¬ dents received grades of “C” or lower in English courses. She thought that Americans would know more about their native language than they do. After her arrival in New York in 1978, Maria began going to school. She moved to her sis¬ ter’s home in New Jersey and began the daily routine of riding the bus two hours to get to classes in New York. Michelle Mustain discovers needed information in the card cata¬ logue. “The ability to read a book is like the ability to listen; it implies a mind that is disciplined to receive and entertain ideas. The good student borrows books when he has to; he buys them when he can. Nothing is more natural than the desire to own a useful or delightful book; to keep it on a private shelf; to mark it up if need be. The habit of buying and reading books is the clear¬ est indication of an educated person, whether in or out of college. But it starts in college, for any student who is genuinely there. It is a habit he will cher¬ ish as long as he has life.” —Mark Van Doren ACADEMICS Library Jo Ann Young, Librarian Lou Weekly, Assistant Librarian Cheryl McKinley, Library Secretary 117 —-- Not only are these journalism students responsible for classwork, but they also write articles for the PINE BURR. Mrs. White’s classes learn the positive and negative aspects of the economic system. America’s history is absorbed by Darlene Johnston and Will Soyars. Jamie Conner awaits his next class asignment. Mr. McKinney hands out dreaded test papers. First semester Bible students learn about the Old Testament of the Bible. Coach Paul Dancsisin passes out old test papers so his American History class can study them for their final. Social Studies The Social Studies department helps students become aware of conditions in the world, to appreciate democratic ideals, to make them aware of their American heritage, to point out the mistakes in the system and suggest ways to change it, and to prepare them to accept their responsibilities for the future. Science Students of the Science department are taught to apply skills by performing, observing, and analyz¬ ing experiments, developing a scientific vocabu¬ lary, using scientific apparatus, answering ques¬ tions, working on class projects, taking field trips, keeping notebooks, participating in class discus¬ sions, and taking tests. Stacy Perry makes an analysis based on the reaction of his mixture. David Day, Michael Clark, and Eric Marble draw conclusions in physics by conducting experiments. A P students look dumbfounded as they discover that they have to name all the bones of the body. 122 Mathematics The Math Department provides opportunities for self-discipline, reasoning, drawing conclusions, and evaluation. Four vocational courses are taught on Monday and Tuesday evenings: Welding, Woodworking, Heating and Refrigeration, and Industrial Elec¬ tricity. Neil Craig explains the various parts of the camera and their uses. Dean Reid gives credit for algebra homework. Mary Dorsey adds and deletes words or sentences in developing paragraphs for composition work. 137 The Magic of ... communication. The key to any relationship, whatever it may be, is communication. Correspondence one to another is an absolute necessity for a successful relationship. Morn¬ ings come early and nights seem long as the steady stream of homework and tests flows to the desk of each member of the faculty. Besides the mounds of paperwork, one of the most difficult feats is trying to communicate with students who have their minds on everything else but what the teacher is saying. Communication comes when they discover that their students have finally learned the difference between an ad¬ jective and an adverb or discover that an animal cell is differ¬ ent from a plant cell. The act of making known, conveying, and revealing is a special ability of the faculty at SMJC. Yes—the joy of know¬ ing there’s magic in the hand that guides a student to a goal. The magic in the voice that speaks words of “you can do it, you can reach your goal in life.” But most of all, the magic of ac¬ quiring the knowledge and then sharing it by an action or a spoken word. The magic of being a leader is “leaders mak¬ ing leaders.” ADMINISTRA TION The Magic of ... THE MAN WITH THE Any successful organization or institution finds its success generated in the mind and work of a competent leader, one who with incisiveness of intellect and compassion of spirit, inspires, directs, and protects the personnel of the organiza¬ tion. Such a leader is Southwest Mississippi Junior College Presi¬ dent Horace C. Holmes. Working with the Board of Trustees, he seeks constantly for growth and improvement of each phase of the college pro¬ gram. Since 1972, when President Holmes became top administra¬ tor of the school, a continuous enlargement of the physical plant has included additional square footage of the vocation¬ al-technical area, providing space for a diesel mechanics pro¬ gram, new facilities for cosmetology, a rotary well drilling program, and the Distribution Marketing Technology Pro¬ gram. Also, to course offerings was added the Associate De¬ gree Nursing Program. Other new or renovated structures were a library-learning resources center, a Fine Arts Building, both men’s and wom¬ en’s residence halls, and an addition to the men’s, the Health Occupations Building, the Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Building, married students apartments, the SMJC chapel, the BSU chapel, new parking lots, and a new cage for the school mascot, Charlie Bear. President and Mrs. Holmes work hard to make all who attend Southwest feel that this is truly a “home away from home.” President Holmes is not just a “president.” He is involved in every aspect of student life and is a genuine friend to every student. Growth in other areas as well has been evident and steady. Enrollment of full-time day students, of evening school stu¬ dents, and of part-time day or evening students has in¬ creased to an all-time high of 1503 in the fall of 1983. Significant also is the heightened awareness of the college as a community-service-oriented institution, providing meeting facilities for numerous civic groups and supporting such en¬ deavors as the United Way and blood drives. All this—and school, too—might stagger a person of less devotion, drive, and determination, but President Holmes maintains the composure of a ship’s captain who knows he is right and orders, “Sail on!”. The wonder of it all is that he has still time and strength for church, family, and home duties, ranging from baby-sitting granddaughter Miley to heading up a pulpit or budget com¬ mittee at his beloved First Baptist Church in Summit. 156 MAGIC TOUCH “Grandpa” Holmes is devoted to granddaughter, Miley. President Holmes assists Mitch Martin and Brooke MacMil¬ lan in getting properly registered. 157 Bra ADMINISTRATORS The administrators support the Presi¬ dent in all phases of administrative du¬ ties. They teach when needed, super¬ vise student activities, participate in public relations programs, set up short¬ term courses for non-traditional stu¬ dents and manage the financial matters of the college. Though not all from the same environment, some vastly different, indeed, all come together into a common experience— Southwest. SMJC is, ultimately, what the students make of it. Through studies, extra-curricu¬ lar activities, and the va te of the time they spend here, students add that special magic that turns an empty, unfeeling campus into a warm, lively institution. Even though Southwest is a small junior college, on the day of registration, and even during the first few weeks of settling in, a feeling of bejng lost in an ocean of .faces is familiar to freshmen.and sophomores alike. One of the great things about - SMJC, however,.Is that no matter how alone” a student may feel right at first, a warm handshake, a pleasant smile, or a simple greeting seems to make the apprehensions of being in a new place fade. All who attended Southwest in 1983-84 learned from its history, and many added to it. It has given them countless memories that will often be objects of recollec¬ tion after graduation tears have dried, and the prized diploma has been put away for safe-keeping. Aside from the treasured memories, she has afforded every student a vision of a bright future, and as students blend with the working class, their attempt to take control of their future will be, hopefully, made a little easier because of the knowledge gained at SMJC. Registration, renting books, buying parking stickers, moving into the dorm, going to athletic events, voting in elections, meeting strangers who become close friends, learning what having Bear Spirit i$ all about . .. 91 m MB m 162 i HUP We are very proud of our accomplish¬ ment in turning out this yearbook. It has become like a baby to us. We ' ve watched it grow from an idea into pic¬ tures, pictures into layouts, and finally, layouts into a full-grown yearbook. We tried continually to capture what “your” Southwest was all about, from guitar-strumming in front of the girls’ dorm to that one glorious victory by the Bears this football season. Of course, with the completion of this yearbook comes a tremendous feeling of pride— a magic feeling that only comes after one’s own life-blood has been poured into a creation. You, the students, “made’’ this yearbook, but we put it together into, hopefully, something that will be even more meaningful to you as the days turn into years. We hope that you will treasure this book as we do and that something captured in this production, whether it be a smile on someone’s face, a certain bit of copy, or even a picture of yourself, will bring back The Magic of Southwest Mississippi Junior College. My two years at Southwest have been very eventful. It seems like only yester¬ day I was going through the sadness of leaving home, being homesick, and now, the sadness of leaving Southwest. Compiling this edition of the WHISPER¬ ING PINES has been a great challenge for me, ano I hope you feel it is a suc¬ cess. JoBeth Roberts 164 Editor As I write this final thanks,” I’m flooded with pictures in my mind of just how the 1983-84 WHISPERING PINES developed. Many times I thought J.B. and I would never get it completed, and now that it is, we both can breathe a little easier. I guess, most of all, I want to make a sincere thanks to Robert Spillman and Jeff Temple, for they were the ones who actually captured the magic of SMJC on film. To my roommate, B.J., and my suitemates, Candy, April, Lisa, and Dana, I want to express my deepest love and gratitude. They seemed to be the ones that kept me going when I wanted to scream, “I quit!” and they never complained about the 24-hour typing during the week of a deadline. Mrs. Craig and Mrs. Johnson were both tremendous sources of energy to me, and I thank them for not letting me get too relaxed after a deadline was completed—mainly because I had another one coming up in a few weeks. Thanks to all those who helped me identify people (Mrs. Toney, band members, and others), and a special thank you to Mary Da- quilla who let me use a picture of hers for the first page of the yearbook. I sincerely hope the WHISPERING PINES reflects all that SMJC was to you, the student, in 1983-84.
