CLOSE ENCOUNTERS SPECIAL FX SPECIAL FX SPECIAL FX SPECIA F} I SMJC Band The Special FX (whether sun or moon) is none other than the SMJC Band. With its enormous supply of lunar dust this group performs fantastically under the radar control of Shelton Whittington. From the moon orbits the field director, Robin Fortenberry. The special FX is interesting to observe and can be seen from all points of the solar system. Under good physical conditions, the Special FX performs in and out of its orbit from the SMJC space station, their homebase. The red line, rifles, and flags make up the spectro-helio- graphic section. Its primary astronomical purpose is to fill in the special features with minute details. THE FORCE PREVAILS EARTH COMMUNICATIONS “Being a football player at Southwest Mississippi Junior College was a challenge for me. Although there were thrills of victory, there were also times of defeat knocking at my door. Even though the Bears’ record of 2-7 didn’t sound impressive, determination was always present.” Each member of the football team felt a closeness and maintained a strength. “With this tremendous strength, we were like a family drawn together and unitarily went out to fight our battles. During this time, we continued to look to the Lord and our head coach, directing all the credit to them.” Each game was an experience that each football player lived to his utmost. When one was knocked down, he would just get up and pray for courage and stamina to keep going. “Playing football was a challenge, but it was one that we could look forward to as long as we followed the coach’s instructions.” INTERVIEW OF JEFF BROWN 26 TO HEIGHTS UNKNOWN The suspense grows as the Force work together with their magnetic pull to overthrow the opposing field of foes. . ■ One of the referees supervises closely as one team member of the Bears zooms forward with a Hinds member hanging on for life! The Southwest Mississippi Junior College Bears struggled through a difficult 1982 gridiron season and emerged with a 2-8 record. After an opening-game victory over defending State Champ, Holmes, the Bears dropped six straight games, then defeated high¬ ly.“tented Pearl River, and ended the season by losing two very, very close games. Throughout the disappointing season, however, one very important element remained consistent: the morale of the team. Southwest won and lost as a team. There was a notable absence of the griping and the laying of blame on others that usually accompany a losing season. Theieam acted as one big family for the most part, and its “fathers,” Coaches Davis, Anders, and Ogden, made everyone very proud to be Bears. We would also like to thank the Alumni for their great support, as well as ail the other fans who made the long journeys to cheer on the Bears. There is nothing more gratifying than to look into the stands and see scores of supporters. We heartily salute the Bear fans and supporters! Statistically speaking, Craig Martin led the Bears in rushing by gaining 315 yards on 73 carriers and scoring 3 touchdowns. That’s a 4.3 yard rushing average for a 31.5 yards per game average. Anthony Fisher averaged 35.1 yards per game in 7 games as he gained 246 yards on 59 carriers for a 4.2 yards per rush average. Richard “John Deere” Wales gained 139 yards on 51 carries, while Randy Benedetto gained 70 yards on 20 carries. Marvin Clement passed for 729 yards while completing 49 of 136 passes to lead the Bears. Thai ' s a completion rate of 36%. He also threw 4 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. David Anderson was 33 of 91 in passing for 496 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions, Chip Peroyea completed 7 of 18 passes for 51 yards and had 1 scoring strike and 1 interception. The biggest passing night of the year occurred at Poplarville against Pearl River. In that game, Marvin Clement passed for 351 yards, Peroyea passed for 9 yards, and David Anderson, who had been moved to wide receiver in the “unbalanced offense,” caught 10 passes for 170 yards and l touch¬ down. Kennv Floyd led all receivers by snagging 26 passes for 453 yards and 2 touchdowns. Tommy Carter caught 16 passes for 214 yards and 1 score. Gerard Caulfield gained 196 yards and 2 touchdowns in 7 receptions. The versatile David Anderson caught 16 passes for 249 yards and 1 touchdown in JUST 3 games. Craig Martin caught 6 passes for 24 yards and Richard Wales chippin in 32 yards on 5 catches, Todd Haygood was 11 for 13 in extra points for 84.6%. The Sopho¬ more from Liberty also made 1 field goal in 6 attempts. Haygood also punted 81 times for 3.126 yards, which is a 38.6 yard average. David Verrett returned 23 punts for 178 yards and had a 7.7 yard return average. During the Pearl River game, Verrett took a Wild¬ cat punt at the Bear 48, hobbled the ball momentarily, sprinted towards the left sideline, and was gone! His 52 yard punt return was the only touchdown scored by Southwest Special Teams this year. Verrett also returned 17 kickoffs for 373 yards and a 21.9 yard average. Kenny Floyd returned 13 for 232 yards (17.8 yard average) and Anthony Fisher returned 11 for 184 yards and a 16.7 yard average. Defensively, David Verrett and Robert Dixon each snagged 3 em emy ariels and Charles Johnson returned his only interception for 70 yards and a touchdown. Steve Faust and Marty Whittington each had a pass theft, also. David Tadlock and Steve Faust each had 4 fumble recoveries to lead the Bears. Charles Hughes led the Bears in tackling by getting in on 80. Anthony Coleman and Dwaine Morris each had 73. As a team, Southwest rushed 361 times for 702 yards and scored 7 touchdowns while averaging 70.7 yards per game. Opponents rushed the ball 513 times for 1,994 yards and 17 touchdowns white averaging 195,4 yards per game. Southwest was 89 for 239 in passing for 1,267 yards, 7 touchdowns, 17 interceptions, a 37.7 completion rate, and averaged 126.7 yards per game. The Bears totalled 1,969 yards for the season and had 600 offensive plays. Opponents totalled 3,460 yards for the season and had 703 offensive plays. by Lloyd Young. Many cadets laserized themselves into a mystic personality of Western Day, Hat Day, Mix and Match Day, and Jersey Day. The over¬ all effect on the space station was a lasting galactical phenomenon. The night of November 6 allowed the re¬ maining light to fall through a prism, filter¬ ing the brilliant rainbow colors and shapes of the earth station Homecoming court members onto the football field. Each cou¬ ple glided slowly across the field under a starry sky beginning with the Ozome maid and ending the Queen, Johna Greer. As the cr owd watched anxiously for the crowning, the coldness shrouded the court and cadets sending shivers of apprehension along each spine. As the evening progressed, positive waves were monitored. The spirit of the Alumni invaded the stadium and a feeling of warmth rose to ethereal heights. The re¬ sults of this universal support didn’t win the earth football game, but it imprinted within each mind the true art of teamwork and dedication. Not too long ago, in a place not far away, one can remember the Homecoming of 1982 on the SW space station. Hopes of victory with the earth sport football, sur¬ passed the predicted horizon. This could be seen in the support given by the cadets in their efforts to provide a spectrum of dis¬ plays. The spirit of universal unity formed the group of players on the earth team for SW. Just like a meteor zooming from space, the Force presented the cadets and SWAT with a spectacular 4-star performance of deter¬ mination and athletic skill. The impact of Homecoming hit both the cadets and SWAT. Each member of the SW space station revealed his mechanical ingenuity and produced some fascinating and fantastic creations. E.T. seemed to be the pervading spirit and aroused the feeling of universal unity. These delightful and varied displays added to the growth and glow of the SMJC BRIDGE TO SUCCESS. CAN YOU TAKE IT? As the Cadets journeyed through time, both positive and negative events settled on the ho¬ rizon. Normal behavior for everyone was to ignite new friendships. This positive charge kindled a flame in both the students and the teachers. With the development of mind-probing tests many cadets acquired a negative attitude, but learned to arrange their activities in spacial order. Progress zoomed forward as each trainee used his time wisely. As each holiday suddenly burst forth, the ca¬ dets were eager to return to All-Prep for the renewing of their spirit. Upon their return to the SW 8283 space station, a haze of solitude suspended itself around the station as each trainee shared with his earth friends the ele¬ mental meaning of his holiday experiences. One of the mysteries yet to be solved is the formation of waves in the hair of the person being tested. Tnr Larry Green and Amos Varnado make use of their astronomical skills. Say, man! This must be a problem we need to solve. Steve Lofton carefully completes a strenuous lesson. This project will fit the next astronomical mission set in motion. Eric Kent is lining up a piece of cosmic wood on his jigsaw to cut an astronomical desig Eric must be careful not to lose any cosmic dust. TOOLHOUSE Left: John “Chicago” Vanderwarf patiently sharpens his as¬ tronomical knowledge from his tool shed. Here he fastens together wires that will complete a computerized circuit. Below: Mikell Craft applies glue to a 2 by 6 before he can continue his project. This piece will give a finishing touch and form a powerful transformation. Bill Hinson, in his space cadet helmet, is ready for the next colorful spark performance. Whatever it takes, his earth machine is ready to send off signals. 133 This department is really on schedule. Donald Gains encompasses his puzzle while he grasps another tool of maneuver. Above: Amanda Arnold and Donna Young wonder if this metagalactic puzzle has a solution. If it does, these two cadets will have to re-examine their instructional manual. Below: Dusty, Melissa, and Gloria are tabulating space data, Patricia Harness watches the screen as a solution is complex ed. She hoped that a lightning rod wouldn’t interfere with the completion of the next message. 134 I The heck with all this! It’s past time to put away this tool of knowledge. If she wishes to complete her survey in Accounting, she can do mine too. I Cadets, Cleda Sharon and Charlotte Rhodus, proceed with the speed of light calculating everyday ordeals of the earth society. ORIGINAL EARTH BEHAVIOR To each “SWAT” team member, the learning of new trainee faces is li] working a metagalactic puzzle. Even so, this faculty is highly equipped! imprint the names, faces, and needs of each individual trainee on the 82 space station into his memory bank. Upon the arrival of the space cadets, the SWAT force met them at Starg j 8283 at 0800 hours. Full throttle was enforced as the faculty began tj journey through the maze of cosmic forces surrounding the interplaneH dome of the earth station. With the challenge of the “Homecoming,” many of trainees marvelled the energetic involvement of SWAT. The team’s enthusiasm could be when Mr. Price wore his rancher’s hat, and when Mrs. Brewer wore huge starfoam sombrero! Many strategic encounters are planned in the faculty. The trainees A tested about earth law in Mr. McKinney’s Federal Government class. M perimentation of new languages, both English and French, forms a leM impression in the minds of those cadets who are summoned by Mrs. Hams, Mrs. Barron, Mrs. Craig, or Mr. Johnson. Every cadet and S member knows the earth year 8283 will be one of knowledgeable inp transformable personages, and electrical shocks to those who wake up to reality of what they have learned from the unique principalities of ean SWAT members. • 9 V J Ike Barnes, Maintenance. He has shown intense interest in Southwest from the beginning and has been a dedicated hardworking, loving man. His life has been an inspiration to those with whom he comes in contact. Besides being dedicated to his family and church, over the years he has served the people of Southwest with pleasure. He is more than just one who sees that the students do their part to keep the school functioning, but one that ensures that the school be the best it can to serve the students. Whether it’s seeing that a new building is built, providing new faculty members, helping out in organizational activities, or just being an all-around sensitive and caring friend, Horace Holmes is surely a dedicated and respected leader at Southwest. Wrplanetary communications have long been a practice used y President Holmes. The telephone is an essential device on ne planet earth. The parties, the studying, the tears, and the laughter will all form a persistent glow in the inner¬ most recesses of the heart and mind of each of us. V Remembrances of the Homecoming dance will invade your thoughts and make you wonder what your college heartthrob is doing now. You’ll remember a certain friend who was always there to console you, or to make an excuse for your not being in class. The images of all those boyfriends or girlfriends will appear and make you question yourself as to how you dated each one without the other finding out! But with each rotation and revolution of the earth, you will have grown older and wiser, and wonder how in the world you stayed up until 4 AM in the morning and made it to an 8 AM class. (Watch Out! Your age is beginning to show.) Those days are to be highlighted and not forgotten. The splendor of sharing at BSU, the openness of friendship at dances, the some¬ times sad departure for the holidays, later coupled with an eager return, the fun and food on Bear Necessities Day, and the sharing of triumphs and failures will make this a memorable year. This time does not linger, but disappears into thin air. The swirl of these memories will appear in one’s mind constantly to comfort him, or make him laugh, assured that “God’s in His heaven and all’s right with the world.’’ -L _TL J- J Catch that Pepsi Spirit Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company of McComb, Inc. HONDA OF McCOMB HWY 24 WEST MCCOMB, MS 601-684-2471 IF WE DON’T HAVE IT, AND WE CAN’T GET IT, YOU’LL NEVER NEED IT!! 189 I want to sincerely thank those involved in the creation of this spectrum of events. A special thanks is extended to Lamar Tu- minello and the universal messengers. Most of all, I am grateful for the assistance given to me by my mother. Her intrinsic brightness and supportiveness, has meant a lot to me. Also, thanks to my entire fam¬ ily and friends for their enthusiasm that has added to the kaleidoscope of events recorded in the 1982-83 Whispering Pines. Commander in Chief, Shari Blailock For many of us, the year was one of intergalactic fun and excitement. Every turn around the corner pre¬ sented some new problem or discov¬ ery. But with each star burst, there was a treasure of wealth to be gained; both in knowledge and ex¬ perience. You’ll probably never for¬ get dissecting that pig in Dr. Bur¬ rows’ biology class; especially when you accidentally cut the wrong part! Even so, one main concern for each of us was to survive through the year. I f one can accomplish such a magni- ficient feat, he certainly is skyrock¬ eting toward a shining future. There have been many ‘ bright” workers on this year’s annual staff Each one has given a vast expanse of time and help into the creation of this memorable star log of events. Besides the fond memories each of us takes home in our memory bank, this star log should spark a constant light of what once was, and that which will materialize an individual into what he will be light years from now. With the journey ending, the univer¬ sal challenge has absorbed a non¬ imputable number of SMJC’s ca¬ dets to the other stations. But some will return, settling down like dia¬ mond dust to be shaped into future stars of the galaxy. jSJlOAL SMuJotAs 190 In Memorium SOLITUDE I needed the quiet, so He drew me aside— into the shadows where we could confide; Away from the hustle where all the day long I hurried and worried when active and strong. I needed the quiet, though at first I rebelled, But gently, so gently my cross He upheld, And whispered so sweetly of spiritual things,— Though weakened in body my spirit took wings To height never dreamed of when active and gay. He loved me so gently, He drew me away. I needed the quiet, no prison my bed But a beautiful valley of blessing instead; A place to grow richer, in Jesus to hide I needed the quiet, so He drew me aside. 191 If you are reading this And have never sat alone Thinking and wondering . . . If you have never laughed On top of a hill About nothing but the wind on your face . . . If you have never run through a field or meadow And heard music and angels all around you In the wind . . . If you have never cried For everything inside of you That words cannot express . .. Then, friend, Where is the magic In your soul! by Jen Nixon
