CHARLIE BEAR — SMJC’S LOVED MASCOT I •v fi ttflki Mill Hectic, But Fun Life at Southwest has both peaks and valleys. One minute, your spirits are at the top most branches of a towering pine. The next minute, they’re at the roots. Like when a frazzled student has three major tests on the same day. Or he loses his I.D. for the fourth time in one week. Or he doesn ' t get his girl¬ friend back to the dorm before the 1:00 curfew and she doesn ' t speak to him for two days. It ' s all a part of SMJC life. DON’T PASS IT UP. Sam Magee catches up on homework between classes. Loria Ratcliff buys necessary school supplies from Mrs. McCafferty in the bookstore. Opening 5 J The bad times are balanced by the good times. Exhilara¬ tion abounds when the mighty Bears bring home a victory. Fun can be had simply by sitting in the Union playing cards. The good times at the Get Acquainted Dance and the Home¬ coming Dance will never be forgotten. The self-satisfaction and good grade on a term paper also will not be forgotten. DON’T PASS IT UP. The student life at SMJC is filled with ups, downs, and surprises beyond any expectations. The students on SMJC’s campus are always making things happen whether it’s in the cafeteria or girls’ dorm. From Practice ... to Performances... to Parades—Bear Band Does It All Throughout the 1981 football season, the band provided outstanding entertainment for all who attended the Bear contests. Not only did the band perform for audiences at football games, but they also were the main attraction at the pep rallies, the Pike County fair and various parades. These pa¬ rades included local Christmas and homecoming celebra¬ tions. Have you ever wondered how a performance is put together? Practice, organization, and leadership were the keys to S.M.J.C.’s band success. Capable leadership on the field were Drum Majors Robin Fortenberry and Angie Hight¬ ower. Overlooked by many, the Bear cheerleaders were there when the Bears won and when they lost. They backed their team through thick and thin. They suffered with them when defeat entered the stadium and celebrated with the Bear when winning, whether by one point or twenty. Under able captain Sonya Smith, the 1981 cheerleaders proved to be the most spirited squad yet. When football season first began, Sonya began her hard work to get the Bear team fired up for the upcoming season. As the year progressed, she was joined by the other sophomore cheer¬ leaders. When school finally got into full swing, four freshmen were elected. These added to the spirit abounding squad. Here are the Bear cheerleaders for 1981. From top to bottom are Nona Hughes, Centreville; Rhonda Gunther, McComb; Kelly Hogan, McComb; Michelle Carley, Jayess; Robin Brewer, Baton Rouge; Melloanie Rodgers , Liberty; Johna Greer, Centreville; and Sonya Smith, captain, McComb. Eddie Baker; Bruce Coffey Perry Ball The 1981 Southwest football team ends the season with a 3-7 record. The record doesn’t reflect the team’s hard work. For example, the 20-13 loss to Pearl River was one of the Bears’ best games but bad luck and fumbles precluded a victory. Homecoming spirits were squashed by Pearl River as the Wildcats took advan¬ tage of four Bear fumbles for a 20-13 win. In the Bears game against East Central in Decatur, injuries hurt Southwest of¬ fense. With only one tight end and two un¬ hurt running backs, Southwest rushed for 130 yards and ECJC for 137. Fumbles smashed the Bears for a 29-19 loss. The Bears defeated the Eagles at Hinds Jr. College with a win of 13-7. The Bears ended the season with a 10-7 victory over 2nd place northern division Mississippi Delta Trojans. The Homecoming Spirit prevailed even though the Bears were defeated. 73 Action 74 75 1981 Bear Basketball cheerleaders include in front, Rhonda Burt—sophomore; Standing, Carrie Jones—sophomore; Sheri Wilson—Freshman; and Joanie Green—sophomore. Cooperation from all involved, many said, might have had the results the team had hoped for. As Coach Jimmy Nail entered his first year as the ladies’ leader, he too, had many hopes for future success. Through history we discover our past, record the present, and look to the future. From Australopithecus in pre-history to General McArthur in World War II, history covers it all. History is a story of the sequence of events that molded and shaped our world to its present existence. At times it be¬ comes necessary to look into the past, at past problems and their remedies, in order to decide what must be done for problems of the present. Let us not forget the importance of history in our decisions for the present and future. People from all walks of life stroll the paths at SMJC. Some may be there for just a while, some for a lengthy stay. The faculty, administration, and staff make each day at SMJC a unique one. Whether the students are depressed after a loss or overjoyed after a win, the atmosphere at Bear Tech is a friendly one. Although the mixture of people may contain a variety, each person has two goals in mind: to choose the right path both academically and spiritually and to be the very best in whatever he does. People People People People 113 SMJC President Horace C. Holmes 114 President Horace C. Holmes Our President “There are realms in which arithmetic does not work,” de¬ clared Dr. Charles E. Jefferson, who then explained, “It has no place in the kingdom of love. For instance, we are not to count the number of times we forgive. Love is not only blind; love does not know how to count. The addition and multiplication tables have their uses, but they are of no value when we are trying to find out what is possible for us to do in the presence of a human need.” President Holmes escorts 1980 Homecoming queen Vivian Reynolds after crowning the 1981 queen during Homecoming Festivities. And certainly one cannot measure the depth of President Holmes’ love for and devotion to Southwest Mississippi Junior College. Nor could one assess the effect of countless hours of sleeplessness stemming from concern about a member of his “school family,” a term used to mean every student and em¬ ployee of the college. A look at his significant accomplishments during the decade that he has served as president convinces one that he has, in truth, been wholly committed to his vision of meeting needs of whatever kind arose in the operation and development of this college. First was the expansion of the academic program, including the addition of an Associate Degree of Nursing program, which now holds an enviable record of a 95% passing rate on the overall state board examination for RN’s. Also added were cos¬ metology, diesel mechanics, R.O.T.C., law enforcement, bank¬ ing and finance, start-up training, short term non-credit courses, and a remedial related subjects program in the voca¬ tional-technical area. Further academic progress came with the institution of a basic skills program including tutorial assistance and expanded guidance counseling. Physical plant improvements amounted to an expenditure of approximately seven million dollars in construction and equip¬ ment for both a men’s and a women’s dormitory, a fine arts building, a library learning resources center, married student apartments, vocational-technical building expansion, health and physical education building, a health occupations building, and faculty housing. Along with new buildings were additional streets and parking lots, football stadium seating, bridges, and a new water system. Somehow, along with keeping our college running and grow¬ ing, our president found time, too, to spend with his own family, to cuddle a granddaughter, to watch his sons in action on the football field or on the basketball court, to be supportive of his registered nurse wife’s career, and to work in his beloved church where he served as both a deacon and Sunday school teacher. And with it all, he has remained a loyal friend to count¬ less numbers of people whom he has known through the years. To paraphrase our theme, then, “Don’t pass him up.” He meets “specs” all the way. i President Horace C. Though we were not always success¬ ful in academics and sports, we look to the future and cherish memories of the past. The friends we made and the ones we kept surely help us along the way. Without the friends and the unique experiences, our lives at SMJC would simply be a blurred memory. But thanks to the people and the times, the memories are vividly painted pictures that cannot be destroyed. I wondered if, years from now my children and yours will look through this yearbook at the great times we had here. Although the collection of memories has different significances to all, every moment spent on this campus will be remembered—whether bad or good. Without the help of a few wil¬ ling,hard-working friends and my understanding family you would not be reading this today. My love and thanks go to Mrs. Craig, who so many times gave the extra get-up-and-go I needed when deadlines were approach¬ ing. She also gave the understand¬ ing and concern I thought no one else had. To Nathan Martin I say thank- you”. Nathan skipped both restful nights and classes to do whatever was necessary—whether it be typing, doing layouts, or writing copy. Again, thanks Nathan. LeWair Coker was also very instrumental in the making of this yearbook. Thanks, LeWair for the copy writing and the understanding. Only you knew what pressure had to be tolerated before a job was completed. Thanks also to Vicki Welch who helped with the typing of these pages. An extra ounce of love and thanks goes to my roommate, Tonya Landry, who lived with these pages scattered everywhere. Tonya, unlike many, gave her time, talents, and incentive that somehow helped more than anything else. Both her ear and pen will always be appreciated. I would like to thank, last but not least, my family. Understanding, love, help and support was given without re¬ striction. Many times when things looked dreary, my family was there to pick me up and dust me off. Thanks, again and I love you. I hope when you look through this yearbook you will remember the good, the bad, the happy and the sad. It was all a part of SMJC that I hope you will tell your children about. It was something too good to be passed up. P.S. I would like to thank Steven Rawls for the excellent pictures as well as the excellent support gi¬ ven—anytime.
