Duane Stevens spends a lot of his time talking to friends on the phone. We learned a lot here at Southwest. We laughed and cried. We loved and hated. Friends came and went. We’ve seen a lot of change. We’ve grown up. It’s hard to believe our time here is almost up. It can’t have been a year already. Can it? But, it has. 6 Opening Section Bears get fired up before the Gulf Coast game. Just yesterday we looked at the clock on the wall and won¬ dered if the time would ever pass. Now we look at the clock and wonder where the time went. It flew by so fast. It were as though the time had wings. Opening Section 7 SOUTHWEST MISSISSIPPI JUNIOR COLLEGE Player Gerald Cayer experiences the pain of injury and defeat during the Itawamba game. The ray of early morning sunshine on the ever-familiar landmark gives the onlooker a feeling of being at home. Football players, James Earl Reynolds, Sid Siebert, Darren Landry, Clint Conque, Lonnie Morris, Reese Bridgman, and George Noflin have one common goal: proving SMJC 1. 8 Opening Section BEAR FACTS We go now; but, a big part of us will stay here. Southwest is a part of us, and we are a part—a part of Southwest—a part of THE BEAR FACTS OF 1981. P.S.D. Opening Section 9 Tonya Rawls, Monica Lacey, and Tommy Badon en¬ joy jus’ chartin ' at the Cowboy dance. Always Something! Lauren Brister just loves to play ping pong in the Student Union. Mark Collins and Beverly Jackson serve treats to beat the summertime heat and registration. “There’s never a dull moment here.” “You can never tell what to ex¬ pect at Southwest.” “The thing you least expect to happen, always happens the re.” Yes, that’s the life of a South¬ west student. Whether one lives on campus or off, there’s al¬ ways something going on: Monday night—football in the girls’ dorm. The Student Union on Tuesday. Wednesday night—a night away from the books—and on the town. Thursday night, the pep rally and a movie. Believe it or not, somewhere in there, there’s time for study. Student life—that’s the crowd that gathers in the lobby of the girls’ dorm to watch T.V. The crazy life of a Southwest student staying up past midnight and getting up before dawn, then taking three tests the next day. What makes Southwest stu¬ dents do crazy things like going on all-night “Bear Patrol” before homecoming? Fun, excitement, and just plain adventure are the answers to these. As one student said, “Someday, I’ll be able to tell my kids about this!” Besides it’s all part of going to SMJC—part of being a Bear. Just another part of the “BEAR FACTS” P.S.D. 10 Student Life Le Wair Coker takes advantage of the wide selection of magazines found in the SMJC Library. STUDENT LIFE Student Life 11 Martha May goes through the weekend routine of moving in and out. Dorms Prove To Be A Lively Place It is just another year for SMJC soph¬ omores; but, to the SMJC freshmen, it is a new life. Dorm life is 12:30 curfew, new friends ... These are all important as¬ pects of “dorming”. Roaches . . . crickets . . . borrowed clothes . . . pillow fights . . . shrill voices at three A.M. . . . heaps of laughter. These are only a few of the perils of dorm life. You might call them “occupa¬ tional hazards”! Dorm life is waking in the early morning hours to find five girls in the room screeching “RAT” at the top of their lungs was many girls initiation into dorm life. One might know, there wasn’t a rat within ten miles of the SMJC campus. Even though there are a lot of prob¬ lems, noises, homework, and confusion there is still even more laughter, laughter over boyfriends, lumpy beds, bad grades, and wrinkled jeans can be heard in, near, or around the girls’ dorm 24 hours a day. Dorm Life 13 BSU Pres. Carolyn Jackson and member Curtis Hughes provided refreshments to weary registration students. 14 Registration 1980 Vivian Reynolds takes time out from registering to give a reassuring smile. Both Rona Dye and Tommy Lewman give warm wel¬ comes to registering students. Ugh! Those Cards Ah, those little cards! Everyone hates them. You can’t seem to get away from them—they follow you relentlessly. They’re known as registration cards! Registration—the curse of the stu¬ dents. 1980 registration was, most likely, one of the smoothest in Southwest his¬ tory. More students enrolled at South¬ west this year than at any other time with a total of 1136 registering. Even with all those registering, the lines still moved fairly fast. The BSU and Wesley Foundation were on hand with coke booths to make registration more bearable. A special thanks to everyone who helped fight the battle of the little com¬ puter card. P.S.D. Registration 1980 15 Wallace Hamilton “gets down” to the music at the SGA sponsored Cowboy Dance. Rod Smith and Glenda Nunnery do the Two-Step to the popular hit “Lookin’ for Love” from the sound¬ track Urban Cowboy”. Cotton-Eye Joe and Away We Go SMJC students got acquainted western style in 1980, and the response was a hearty western YAHOO!” Top Notch Talent was there to spin the hits and one of the biggest crowds of Southwest students ever turned out to enjoy the “Get Acquainted Dance.” “Let’s Dance” was heard throughout the student union and no one stayed shy for long. A contest for the “Best Dressed Cowboy and Cowgirl” was held and proved a big success. When it was over, everyone was sure Southwest was the “hospitable” place to be. P.S.D. Joey Fortenberry and Colleen Stringer win cowboy hats for being the best dressed cowboy and cowgirl at the Get Acquainted Dance. Carl Moak and Gregg Coke compete for best dressed cowboy. Betsy Carraway enjoys the variety of music, people and outfits at Cowboy Dance. Cowboy Dance 17 Coach Davis loves those Bears. The cheerleaders always work hard to keep the spirit up at SMJC. Randy Hedstrom and Bryan Alford sport shaved heads, to show their bear spirit! Larry McDaniel, Jeff Pierce, and the rest of the band boost the spirit at the pep rallies. 18 Pep Rallies Pep Rallies Boost Spirit When one thinks of the BEAR FACTS of 1981, he can scarcely forget the one thing which probably had the most ap¬ peal—the pep rallies! Everyone may not have been involved in the band or sports. Everyone can’t be in the Hall of Fame. Some students have probably not even seen the SGA meet. But, surely, everyone loves the pep rallies!!! Paula Jackson, Eileen Allen, and Erma Schillings were there to support the bears. Assemblies 23 Homecoming 1980 The student body elected the court for Homecoming 1980, selecting one of the finest courts in SMJC’s 50 years. Vivian Reynolds of Gillsburg was se¬ lected as Homecoming Queen. Miss Reynolds was escorted by SGA president Donnie Ward. Her court included: Student body maid Niece Sterling of Gloster, who was es¬ corted by Donald Seale, Debra McClen¬ don of Gillsburg and Debra Reeves of Li¬ berty. They were escorted by Carl Moak and Jimmy Stephenson. Freshman maids were Barbara and Mary Bass of New Roads, Louisiana. Barbara’s escort for the evening was Wallace Hamilton and Mary’s Curtis Hughes. The football team selected Wanda Dupre was escorted by Cliff Reid. Even the rain didn’t dampen the spirits of the 1980 Homecoming court. Debra McClendon doesn’t let the rain spoil her parade. President Horace Holmes crowns Vivian Reynolds queen 1980 while escort, Donnie Ward, flower girl Dana Michelle Young and crown bearer, Jesse Reyn¬ olds watch. 1980 Escorts are Donnie Ward, Donald Seale, Curtis Hughes, Carl Moak, Jimmy Stephenson, Cliff Reid, and Wallace Hamilton. Wanda Dupre’, Football Maid, awaits pre-game activities. I Homecoming 25 ■ Nothing Dampened the Bear Spirit It was the beginning of another 50 year reign for Southwest Junior College and the rain poured down. That didn’t dampen the spirits at SMJC’s 51st, though. The show went on. All week the Bears showed their spirit by participating in spirit days—dressing up as cowboys and Indians, hunters in camou¬ flage, and some of us even once or twice looked like rejects from somewhere else in time. An open house kicked off the festivities Saturday and visitors were allowed, for the first time, to tour the Southwest interdenomi¬ national chapel. That night, rain didn’t stop the Bear power either. The Bears defeated their arch-rival the Co-Lin Wolves 17-10. At half-time, Queen Vivian Reynolds was crowned. The weather occasionally caused a change of plans or place but it never hurt the Bear spirit. Randy Benedetto and Monica Lacey dress up for mix and match day. It was a season with great expectations, some fulfillments and some disappointments. The ’80 Bears were a team that aimed for the stars; talk about a State Championship and even a trip to Pasedena was not uncommon. But injuries among other setbacks stopped the Bears short of their goals. Let’s recap this year’s football season. In the season opener the Bears played host to the Lions of East Ms. Jr. College. The Lions, who were nationally ranked last year, came into Summit with a solid reputation. The game was totally dominated by the Bears, but mistakes proved too costly to over¬ come as the Bears were edged 10-17. The Gulf Coast game had to have been the finest game the Bears played. Defensively the Bears were flawless, as they used their quickness to contain the powerful Bulldogs’ attack, allowing them only 3 points. Offensively, the Bears controlled the ball and executed time-consuming drives when they were most needed. The Bears’ only score came when Bear quarterback Mark Roussel found Ross McCullough alone in the end zone. The win marked the first time in nearly twenty years Southwest had defeated the Gulf Coast Bulldogs. After such an emotional win the week before, the Hinds game was a letdown for the Bears, although it didn’t seem like it in the beginning. The Bears scored first in the initial quarter on a long run by tailback Jimmy Keyes, but Hinds came back to tie it at 7 apiece after trading touchdown passes in the first half. Hinds scored once more in the second half which proved to be enough for the win. Hinds 21, Southwest 14. Week four proved disastrous. Not only did the Bears lose 24-7 to Itawamba in one of their poorest played games, but injuries stripped the defensive unit. Pat McCabe would be lost for the season. Omar Hadi and Clint Conque both received shoulder injur¬ ies. The injury caused Hadi to sit out three weeks. The Bears traveled to Coahoma to play the non-victorious Ti¬ gers. A new offense helped put 21 points on the board and the defense got their only shut-out for the season. Stevie Moore, Jim¬ my Keyes, and Mark Roussel all scored on short runs in the Bears’ second victory. The Jones game was an important game in the South division. A victory would have put the Bears in first place. Although the Bears had an impressive win the week before, the Bobcats of Jones proved too much for the injury-riddled Bears. With the defense stripped, the team from Ellisville ran up 36 points—the most the Bears would give up all season. The only bright spot for the Bears was a 20-yard touchdown pass by Mark Roussel to James Banks. Jones 36, Southwest 7. Week seven was homecoming week and emotions were high for arch-rival Co-Lin. Both teams had identical records of 2-4 and both needed a victory. The game was played with a driving rain all night, but the mud didn’t bother the Bears as fullback Marlon Warner scored the first TD on a 27-yard run and then added a 24-yard field goal. With the score tied at 10, back-up quarterback Vince Graves, who came in early in the game to replace injured starter Mark Roussel, ran 10 yards untouched for the final score giving the Bears a 17-10 win. The following week the Bears traveled to Poplarville to take on the ‘Cats’ of Pearl River. The Bears had a new look. Defensively, most of the injured starters had returned while offensively they had a new quarterback in Vince Graves of McComb. Graves replaced (continued on page 43) Coaches Mac Anders, Floyd Davis, and John Ogden along with the rest of the team watch the action on the field during one of SMJC’s games. row: Lonnie Morris, Reese Bridgman, Mike Crawford, Gary Crum, Arnold DeLee, Darrell Hughes, Charles Robinson, Glenis Havard, Mark Hurst, Bryan LeBlanc, Bryan Alford, Ray O’Neal, Kyle Hux, Trey Magee, 4th row: Ricky Jones, Gerald Cayer, Sid Siebert, Pat McCabe, Brian McDaniel, Burney Bilbo, Dwayne Whitting¬ ton, Darryl Willis, Randy Jones, Kyle Brabham, Derick Dillon, Greg McDowell, John Weaver, and Ross McCullough. Graves didn’t waste any time in his new role as he scored the first TD on a 1-yard drive. Jimmy Keyes gathered in a screen pass and ran 25 yards for another touchdown. Pearl River came back late in the game to score twenty-four points for their own homecoming victory. PRJC 24 SMJC 16. East Central marked the last home game for the Bears and it was one that would be sweetly remembered. With a score of 14-13 and the game in the final minutes, East Central was threatening to score, but Randy Hedstrom made an East Central back cough up the ball while Omar Hadi picked it off and raced 96 yards un¬ Marlon Warner sits on the sideline and watches his team go down in defeat. The Bear team is excited about their victory over Co-Lin. touched for the final score in a heart-stopping win. Southwest 21 East Central 13. The Bears traveled to Moorehead to play Delta and hopefully finish with a 5-5 season record. But Delta proved unwilling to be the Bears’ fifth victory as the Trojans from Moorehead won the season final 15-3. So there you have it. After 16 weeks of hard work and sacrifice the Bears ended the season at 4-6. But with four victories there was a sweet victory over Co-Lin for homecoming and a victory over the State Champions, Gulf Coast, the only defeat they suffered all season. Who keeps the spirit up even when the Bears are down? Who never misses a foot¬ ball game no matter what the weather? Na¬ turally—the cheerleaders. The student body elected three freshmen and four sophomores to be the 1980 football cheerleaders. Head cheerleader was Vivian Reynolds. Sophomore cheerleaders were Cornelia Dickerson, Debra McClendon, and Glenda Johnston. Freshmen, elected at the first assembly, were Melanie Moore, Mel- loanie Rogers, and Mary Bass. This record which, as one player put it, was the best SMJC ever had, includes a last-second winning shot over Utica Jr. College. The 16-9 record also includes an unforgettable come-from- behind win over the Bear’s arch rival, the Co-Lin Wolves. In this game, the Bears were behind the Wolves by fifteen points in the last half of the game, until Coach Young let the Bears out of their cages. After a time-out conference courtside the Bears edged the Wolves, leaving the final score 70-67. Also included in this record were several overtime wins and loses. Each game played exemplified true Bear sportsmanship as well as outstanding playing. The Bears carried out their winning tradition and made all Bears proud of them. Coach Jenny Ladner led the ladies with outstanding coaching as well as superb supervising. When Coach Ladner was asked who was the toughest com¬ petition the Lady Bears played, the five-foot three coach said, “There are eight teams in our division, all were fairly tough, but the toughest were Utica Jr. College and Pearl River Jr. College. There were times that we played very well, but the majority of the time, some of the girls played as individuals—not as a team. This hurt us somewhat.” Coach Ladner stated that she did her best to motivate the ladies to do their best playing ever. She also stated that she could only stimulate them—the girls had to react and do the best they could. Each of the players had to set individual goals as well as team goals, all the while, reaching old ones and setting new ones. Leading scorers for the Lady Bears included Connie Holmes with a 13.4 average, and Marie Robinson who had a game average, and Marie Robinson who had a game average of 19.4 points. Marie not only was the fourth leading scorer in the three state region but was also the leading rebounder in the region. Marie had an average of 13.4 rebounds. The Lady Bears held up the SMJC winning ways and did indeed prove to be, as Coach Ladner puts it, “a great group of kids.” Coach Jenny Ladner gives the girls a pep talk during game. Anyone enrolled full¬ time in SMJC is a member of the Student Association. The Council is selected by a popular vote of the students. The Pine Burr and the Whispering Pines staffs are two more opportuni¬ ties to “have your say.’’ The paper and yearbook staffs meet each Tuesday at 2:30 in the Simmons Li¬ brary. Even for those students who don’t write articles, any input is wel¬ comed. The paper and yearbook are STUDENT publications for the students. Religious organizations are popu¬ lar on campus. Whispering Pines Staff 73 The Pine Burr— News You Can Use Thomas Jefferson once said, “Given a choice of a govern¬ ment without newspapers or newspapers without government, I should not hesitate to choose the latter.” Just as SMJC would surely be lessened with the discontinua¬ tion of the Pine Burr, my year would surely have been lessened had I not had the opportunity to be the editor. If it has been a headache, it has also been a joy. If it was difficult, it was equally fun. If it was trying at times, it was also a great experience. I must say that it has not been a one-man job and I must thank each person who contributed—whether an article or an idea or a word of encouragement. My special thanks go to the Enterprise-Journal staff who taught me much. To Karen and Mr. O’Brien, thank you. You never failed to help me in any way you could. No request was too absurd, no job too large. You taught me much. Finally, to Mildred Craig, thank you for being so many things. Thank you for being understanding, and being there with an encouraging word and for just being Mrs. Craig. Your spirit is contagious and many, many times it has picked me up at just the right time. The time has come now for me to turn over the Pine Burr to a new leader. I wish the leader all the good times in the world. I leave SMJC now; but a large part of me will stay here, and when the students remember me, I hope they remember that the Pine Burr was a large part of me. Maybe they’ll remember, perhaps with fondness, that I did my best. I hope they’ll just remember that I loved it. B.S.U. 77 SMJC Dedicates Its New Chapel Southwest Mississippi Junior College held dedication ceremo¬ nies for its newly-completed Interdenominational Chapel Sun¬ day with a capacity crowd of about 115 persons present. H.T. Huddleston, former SMJC president, was the main speaker. The theme of his remarks was that the chapel will be used not only as a place of worship, but as a place for individ¬ uals to be alone to think. Huddleston paid tribute to the contributors who helped make the building of the chapel possible. Among those groups he praised were the SMJC Development Foundation, organized in 1973, which was instrumental in organizing the fund drive in 1975. This group is a non-profit organization through which non¬ alumni contribute support to the school. Another group, the SMJC Alumni Association, was also responsible for much of the contributions. A special plaque was presented to Adene and Aylene Hurst, twin daughters of the late John I. Hurst, in appreciation for their father’s individual efforts in raising funds and soliciting other support for the chapel. The chapel is located on the campus just north of the wom¬ en’s dormitory. J.W. Beck Jr., president of the Development Foundation, made the presentation of the chapel to the college, followed by a response by Horace Holmes, SMJC president. Amidst all the confusion, and hustle and bustle and hassle, what did we accomplish in 1981? What went on? Inflation, Iran, hostages, draft registration became household words. $1.05 a gallon for gas jolted students back to reality. Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, the Middle East, nuclear disar¬ mament, exams, Beowulf, Who’s Who, Homecoming, elections in the Student Union with Dean Reid presiding—these were just as much a part of the life of the SMJC student. Who could forget seeing for the first time in a long time, young men lining up at the Post Office to register for the Draft? Or lining up at the table in front of the Student Union Post Office to register to vote for class officers? Who could forget the rising cost of foreign crude oil? Or the rising cost of college tuition? Who could forget Iranians raiding the American embassy in Tehran and taking hostages? Or the football players raiding the girls’ dorm and taking panties? Who could forget paying $1.35 a gallon for gasoline? Or pay¬ ing .35 instead of .30 for soft drinks? Who could forget the Middle East crisis? Or the crisis of trying to find a seat in the middle of the girl’s dorm lobby on good movie nights? Yes, we’ve accomplished much. What will 1982 bring . . . .? Well, there’s a lot of confusion involved. Being a freshman is being proud to be a college student finally; but hanging on—just a little—to the craziness of high school. Being a freshman is starting over. Being a freshman is oversleeping and missing your first period class—five days in a row. It’s jumping up, throwing on your clothes, and rushing to your second period class—only to real¬ ize that you’re at your Tuesday-Thursday class and today is Wednesday! “Freshman-itis” is rushing back to your car only to realize that the security guard has favored you with a little yellow ticket because your car wasn’t in a white space! Being a freshman is missing one class entirely because a sophomore says it’s third period and it’s actually fourth! Believe it or not, Freshmen, the year may seem like a long time, but in a very, very short time you’ll be a sophomore your¬ self. And what would college life be without freshmen orienta¬ tion”! Some of the introductions to college life may be a little odd; but BEAR with it, Freshmen and you’ll be thinking of better ways to irritate a freshman next year! A year full 1980—A year full of “firsts” and “lasts”. Of people in the spotlight and places on which we concentrated our atten¬ tion. 1980—A year full of happenings which shocked us, thrilled us, and renewed our sense of patriotism. On the international scene, Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi of Iran was deposed by his countrymen and subsequently died of cancer in a foreign land — a man without a country. Russian troops invaded Afghanistan, sparking the ire of the American people and subsequently causing the American boycott of the summer Olympics in Russia. A major earthquake in Italy killed thousands and left thousands of others homeless, sparking the compassion of the world. Fifty-two United States citizens were held hostage for 444 days by Iranian students. Closer to home, we thrilled with a group of upstart U.S. Hock¬ ey players as they defeated the Russians and the Fins to bring home the gold from the Winter Olympics. We gritted our teeth as The basketball crowd is always backing the Bears. Closing 201 we watched the federal government give loans to Chrysler Cor¬ poration. Americans cheered their new heroes—with names like Eric and Beth Heiden and the Philadelphia Philles. And they mourned a fallen hero—John Lennon — and sparked a resur¬ gence of Beatlemania. Americans watched in horror as Cuban refugees poured by the boat loads into Florida in Freedom Flotillas, and Mt. St. Helens erupted causing chaos. Even closer, SMJC sat up and took notice when gasoline prices rose to $1.50 and the price of a burger and fries went up, too. Southwest lost a great leader when Mr. John I. Hurst died. The year is ending, as all good things must. We could write many, many chapters on our life here at Southwest, but the time has come to write the conclusion of the Bear Facts 1981. Let us write a fond farewell. We turn once again, as we did at the beginning of this year, to face another new beginning. In the words of a famous man. “If we face the sun, our shadows will fall behind us.” PSD Marie Robinson shoots for two. Wanda Stringer, Stan Hilton and Martha May rest a while after a hard workout on the skating rink floor. Students enjoy each others company at one of the many dances on campus. 202 Closing BEAR FACTS A group of friends, Mary Bass, Joey Guidry, Kyle Hux, Niece Sterling, Randy Jones, Barbara Bass, Darryl Dykes gather outside the union. Closing 203 BEAR FACTS OF 1981 EDITOR STATES, “My dream came true, thanks to you!” A famous philospher once said, “Without dreams there is no need to work and without work there is no need to dream.” Throughout my high school years, I had always dreamed of putting together a yearbook. Through much hard work and many long hours, I had the opportunity to edit my high school year¬ book. As I continued my education here at Southwest, I joined the Whispering Pines staff and had the distinct pleasure of editing it during my sophomore year. The Whispering Pines has become a part of my life. I have thoroughly enjoyed putting this memory-filled book together. It has been a lot of hard work and a lot of tedious hours. I must say that I had a few wonderful people that never let me down. They were always there when I needed them. I also had a very caring and inspirational sponsor, Mrs. Mildred Craig. I would especially like to thank Colleen Stringer for the many hours she spent drawing layouts and writing copy. Pam Davis was also very instrumental as chief copy editor and Houston McDavitt made this yearbook with his photographs that added a touch of class to each page. Special thanks go to Ann Claire Brumfield and Angela Coon for their work of whatever needed doing, but most of all for their many words of encouragement they gave me when the going got tough. They were always there to get me going once again. I would also like to express my gratitude to Gregg Coke. Without his beautiful artwork and added love, this yearbook would be nothing. In one sense, Gregg made this yearbook what it is—a book of memories. Looking back over the year I would say that the most rewarding experience I had was getting to know a wonderful lady, Mrs. Craig. She helped me through many trying times and she was always there to lend a helping hand in anything that I needed. I would like for this loving thanks to go to Mrs. Craig. As I continue to look back, I realize that these people played a major role in the dream I’ve had ever since high school. My dream could not have come true and would not have been so perfect without these caring people. The Whispering Pines is something that I’ll always cherish, not because I edited the yearbook, but because it holds so many memories that I choose never to forget. Thanks to everyone for making the BEAR FACTS of 1981 such a great success!
