Making Ourselves At Home Moving day, five new sisters, boxes of clothes, suit¬ cases and mementoes, frustration, running here and there—a tired, happy feeling at the end of the day. All these things and more make up dorm life. There are 187 girls and boys living on campus. They spend usually five days a week together for nine months. Yet, somehow, they manage to get along peacefully. Each one is his own special person; yet, each one is truly a part of everything that goes on. And each one loves and “hates” the dorm for some unique reason. Loving her suite-mates—yet hating to wait in line to wash her hair. Loving the late-night rap sessions—hating the 12:00 curfew. Loving the relative freedom of dorm life, and hating the emptiness that sometimes goes along with being away from home. Dorm life is all of this and more. Dorm life is hearing Mrs. Connerlly’s voice over the intercom announcing an¬ other meeting. Dorm life is listening for the sound of someone’s singing “Happy Birthday” because a birthday cake will surely accompany it. Dorm life is “Huxley Uni¬ versity” and the “Pitts.” Dorm life is talking until 2:00 a.m. and getting up at 6:00 a.m. for first period class. Dorm life is hearing the alarm clock go off and wishing it weren’t so yet, knowing it is—for it’s all part of the won¬ derfully frustrating life of a dorm student. P.D. Gentlemen often offer to help unpack at the girl’s dorm. What’s in the bag? Connie Martin helps Debbie Hall “take a load off.” 8 Dorms
