HQNQ8THE PRSti 1 ‘ l ' - S ' A V ik . V ' ' ♦. y m JP CELEBRATE THE FUTURE .2 Opening October 13, 1979 marked the fiftieth, golden anni¬ versary of Southwest Mississippi Junior College. Only 50 years ago, SMJC was a small agricultural high school. Since then, we have become more than a small-town school in southern Mississippi. We have grown and expanded and are now a highly re¬ spected member of the community and of the state. Pike County Agricultural High School was built on the site of Godbold’s Mineral Wells, a national re¬ sort. Classes were held in the “Old Hotel” building. It was decided in 1929 to add first year college courses and gradually discontinue high school work. There were fifty-six freshmen and six in¬ structors that first year. Nine college level courses were offered. This sounds elementary compared to the curriculum today. SMJC now offers 118 college level courses, 25 technical courses, and 15 terminal vocational courses. In 1934, Pike County Agricul¬ tural High School officially became Southwest Mis¬ sissippi Junior College, as its second year of college work was added. A returning alumnus from those days would scarcely recognize the look of the campus. Thirty- one buildings have been constructed since that time. There have been six presidents of Southwest: J.M. Kenna, H.D. Pickens, C.H. nell, C.C. Moore, H.T. Huddleston, and of course, Horace C. Holmes. Two other counties now join in the support of SMJC. Amite began support in 1940, and Walthall joined in 1964. With the help of those in the past, present, and fu¬ ture, Southwest will surely continue to stand proud and be recognized as one of the best junior colleges in the South. Charlie Bear, our present mascot, joined us in 1972. Our bear is a symbol to be proud of and should be treated with dignity. For this reason, in October, plans were made to renovate Charlie’s cage; enlarging it to twice its present size and mounting his name on it. The un¬ dertaking was known as-“Project Charlie”. The Student Government Association sponsored “Project Charlie” and held many events to raise money for this worthy cause, including a disco dance at Halloween. “Project Charlie” got under way after home¬ coming and completion was to be by spring. John I. Hurst breaks ground for new chapel. Opening 3 Robin Taylor and Lori Foy are sharing secrets. Each student has his own way of making the Golden Anniversary a year to remember. Masquerade Party? No, just Huxley University and “The Pitts”. 4 Opening Mixed and matched for homecoming are Dorie Greer, Vivian Reynolds, Deborah Reeves, and (bottom) Melanie Stewart. All these things and more make up dorm life. There are 187 girls and boys living on campus. They spend usually five days a week together for nine months. Yet, somehow, they manage to get along peacefully. Each one is his own special person; yet, each one is truly a part of everything that goes on. And each one loves and “hates” the dorm for some unique reason. Loving her suite-mates—yet hating to wait in line to wash her hair. Loving the late-night rap sessions—hating the 12:00 curfew. Loving the relative freedom of dorm life, and hating the emptiness that sometimes goes along with being away from home. Dorm life is all of this and more. Dorm life is hearing Mrs. Connerlly’s voice over the intercom announcing an¬ other meeting. Dorm life is listening for the sound of someone’s singing “Happy Birthday” because a birthday cake will surely accompany it. Dorm life is “Huxley Uni¬ versity” and the “Pitts.” Dorm life is talking until 2:00 a.m. and getting up at 6:00 a.m. for first period class. Dorm life is hearing the alarm clock go off and wishing it weren’t so yet, knowing it is—for it’s all part of the won¬ derfully frustrating life of a dorm student. P.D. Gentlemen often offer to help unpack at the girl’s dorm. What’s in the bag? Connie Martin helps Debbie Hall “take a load off.” 8 Dorms Dorms 9 Sharing Our Memories Together Mrs. McCaffrey and Mrs. Prescott help Melanie Stewart get it all together. Mrs. Craig concentrates on registration’s busy work. tf The Frustration of Registration There’s no way around it, everyone hates it, and we are all glad when it is over. This year’s registration went unusually well; however, as we quickly moved through the maze of cards, pictures, and signatures, we clutched our new schedules to our eager but apprehen¬ sive hearts, and tried not to bite our fingernails. The sharp edge of this torture was effectively dulled by the PTK, BSU, and Wesley with soothing words and free soft drinks. A toast to these fine people for helping us feel welcome! S.L. Tommy Lewman and Mr. Johnson help make the all-important I.D. cards. 10 Registration Registration 11 Mixing and Matching At The Get-Acquainted Dance Dancing can be exceedingly enjoyable. Vickie Davis shows Wallace Hamilton how it is done. Thursday night, the sixth of September Proved a date that we’ll always remember As being the start of a rocking good year— The Get Acquainted Dance put us in high gear! James Craig and the Great South Rock Gaverous rock, Willie Nelson, and disco. We dreaded midnight, we wanted more, We had such local talent on the Union floor! The old buddies didn’t all stick together. But got to know their new friends better. There’s no place like the South for hospitality And Southwest is surely a great place to be! S.F.L. Craig Pigott had lots of fun! 12 Get Acquainted Dance Get Acquainted Dance 13 Let’s Get Fired Up! Steve Stogner explains what a pep rally is all about. The Red Line add their special spice. It’s fun, but it’s exhausting! i President Horace Holmes presides over thi pep rallies, too. 14 Pep Rallies Go, Bears! Two Bits, “fired up”, the band, and the regular appear¬ ance of the coaches and captains. These things are all special parts of a special activity on campus- pep rallies. The enthusiasm of the cheerleaders combined with the spirit of the student body has made these pep rallies events to look forward to. We continue to support our Bears and get them, “Fired up!” Wayne Herring stays in the swing of things. Rickey Pace goes to watch the cheerleaders. Some of us can’t wait till the game to scrimmage. Most of us found the assemblies interesting. Assemblies 19 October 13, 1979 • • • October 13, 1979 marked the 50th anniversary of S.M.J.C. If those first students could see us now ... Well, we’ve come a long, long, way! Homecoming week—fun, work, making decorations. Homecoming—red, white, and blue day, mix-match day, dress-up day. Homecoming week—pep rallies, bonfires, and spirit sticks. Homecoming week—yelling, winning, and dancing the night away. These are the things we’ll remember about Home¬ coming ’79. Everyone turned out for the golden anniver¬ sary of S.M.J.C. There were folks from the first and last graduating classes, and almost every class in between. Saturday there was openhouse in the dorm, and a ban¬ quet was held for the alumni and Sophomores of S.M.J.C. Saturday was also the day for “The Big Game’’. The band and the Homecoming Court was terrific; there was even a special appearance by the old-timers’ band. It was pos¬ sibly the most exciting Homecoming game in many-a- year for S.M.J.C., as the Bears defeated Co-Lin by one point in the last 10 seconds of the game. After the game, the excitement did not lessen, for there was the dance with Papa Joe and the Riverboats. Yes, pep rallies, bonfires, yelling and winning—we’ll re¬ member these—and our Golden Anniversary—for a long, long, time. P.D. Above: Dean Miller and Olsen Stogner discuss Homecoming. The 1979 SMJC football team was unlike any other in the school’s history. There was a high team spirit through¬ out the year and the players became one big family. They suffered the de¬ spair of defeat together and they shared the joys of winning. This team closeness made an average 5-5-0 record feel like a glamorous 10-0-0 season. Coach Floyd Davis, in his eleventh year, led this emotional team. His ex¬ perience paid off in the rough times. An example was the homecoming game when he masterminded a flaw¬ less two minute drill in the closing of the game which won the game for Southwest. Davis was aided by defen¬ sive coordinater Mac Anders and line coach John Ogden. These men, who at °ne time played for Southwest, know what it takes to be a Bear and have what it takes to teach a bear. The Bears opened the season with a 18 to 7 loss to the incumbent North Di¬ vision Champion Delta Trojans. Phil Dickerson scored the Bears first TD of the season in this losing cause. Marlin Warner kicked the extra point. The first road game for Southwest also was their first victory as they de¬ feated the Tigers of Cahoma 30 to 26. The Bears trailed by three at the half hut Turney threw TD passes to James Bunks and Baren Landry to clench the lead and the victory. The game against Gulf Coast was postponed because of Hurricane Fred¬ erick, so the Bears next game was against the Hinds Eagles. After the game the Eagles were ready to be served as dinner as the Bears soundly beat them. The Bears with a 2-1-0 record took the 0-4 Bulldogs from Holmes too lightly and were beat 34-12. Bear scorers were Don Turney on a short run and John Weaver on a TD pass from freshman QB Mark Rousell. Southwest was unable to recover and were blasted by Jones the follow¬ ing week 34-10 giving the Bears a 2-3-0 record. The 10 points came on a Turney pass to Banks and on a 36 yard field goal by Mark Warner. The following game was Southwest’s 50th homecoming anniversary and matched them against the rival Co-Lin Wolves. The Bears scored first and attained a 7-0 lead but by the half the wolves were in control 20-7. Southwest scored twice in the 3rd period to tie the game up at 20-20. The Wolves went ahead 26-20 and time was running out on the Bears. Coach Davis refused to panic as he called perfect plays. Leading the Bears to a tieing TD pass from Turney to Banks. PAT by Warner won the game for the Bears 27 to 26. The Bears, still high from the Home¬ coming game trampled the East Cen¬ tral Warriors 33-20. The 13 point differ¬ ence fails to show the superb playing by the Bears as they easily took the game to make their record at 4-3-0. Pearl River was SMJC’s final divi¬ sion game and a win would insure them of a playoff game but it was not to be as the Wildcats won 27-21. The Bears had led 6-0 early in the game on a Tumey-Banks pass combination, but this was their only lead. The East Mississippi Lions ranked 9th in the nation, played Southwest next and there was little hope for the Bears. The Lions jumped out to a 21-0 lead and tried to make the Cubs sur¬ render early. But the highly emotional Bears both embarrassed and angered scored an unbelievable 35 straight points. This nationally ranked team de¬ feated 35-28 went home with respect for Southwest. The Bears now had one more slot at the playoffs. They were 5-4-0 and had to beat the Gulf Coast Bulldogs to enter the post-season playing. The Bulldogs scored early to lead 14-0 and this was the final score. The Bears ended with a 5-5-0 year. This was the first team in 21 years that had a chance to make the playoffs. The students were behind them all the way and they almost made it. This, however, was not the outstanding fea¬ ture of the team. The outstanding fea¬ ture was the love shared by team mem¬ bers. This smoothed things out when times were rough and left a lasting im¬ pression on the student body. This 5-5-0 team of 1979 will be re¬ membered for a long time. —K.G.S. Go for it, Stevie! Although Spanish is not taught, an interest in it by the club’s two Venezualan students is thriving. From the German division’s 7:00 a.m. breakfast meeting to the French’s Thursday afternoon sessions, those not involved would have a hard time un¬ derstanding what’s going on. A new idea of speaking only the studied language has proved to in¬ crease the speaking ability of the stu¬ dents in that language. Annual Staff 75 a The Pine Burr Staff On The Go The Pine Burr is the official paper of SMJC and has three major purposes. One purpose is to recog¬ nize and record events and happenings of the school. This is the most difficult part, for even though everything on campus is news, the inter¬ views, the accurate reportings, and the meeting of deadlines can become hectic. Another purpose of the Pine Burr is to promote the school and this is the easiest part. There is so much good at Southwest that any news story nor¬ mally promotes the school. The Administrative staff, faculty, and students can all be praised for this, for each, does his part to improve SMJC. The third purpose of the paper, is to be the voice of the students. The students of today are the lead¬ ers of tomorrow and their ideas must be heard. Mrs. Mildred Craig is the advisor of the paper, and without her the paper would cease to be. She is the heart and soul of the paper. She keeps us going when times get rough and when all seems lost. She loves the paper staff and we love her. She has de¬ voted her life to this school and to the Pine Burr and just as the paper is the reflection of SMJC, so is it the reflection of Mildred Craig.—K.G.S. 76 Newspaper Staff Mrs. Mildred Craig, advisor, and Kelly Spinks, editor, look over the latest Pine Burr edition. My heart warms At the way God loves and cares for all of his creation And I pray— That all will rejoice in God’s grace and forgiveness With praise From the depths of our hearts. And I want to cry for those who say there is no God. I only ask That You will give me the strength And knowledge To carry forth your work in the way You would wish, Proclaiming You as my Lord and Savior; For it’s your world, Lord! —Dennis DeLee ■1 78 Wesley Foundation Rev. James McCafferty—Sponsor The Wesley Foundation is the reli¬ gious organization for Methodist stu¬ dents on the Southwest Mississippi Ju¬ nior College campus. Membership is open to any student who wishes to at¬ tend regardless of one’s denomination. This growing organization is affiliated with the Summit United Methodist Church and is directed and sponsored by pastor, Rev. James McCafferty and SMJC librarian, Miss Frances Murry. Located in Kenna Hall, the Wesley Foundation was established to provide a Christian atmosphere for youth fel¬ lowship on campus. Its meaning to stu¬ dents varies. For some students, the meetings serve as a time to enjoy the fellowship of friends; for .others, this time gives them the opportunity to ex¬ press their needs or help others with their Christian needs. Officers for the 1978-80 school year include; Tim McDaniel, president; Cliff Reid, vice-president; and Sally Bigner, secretary-treasurer. This year a singing group was formed with a musical tape back up. This group traveled to churches and to the area nursing homes sharing their witness through song. At Christmas the group met and practiced Christmas carols to sing at the area nursing homes. Wesley of 1979-80 has brought Christian love and fellowship to others. Anyone who has been at Southwest knows that Huxley is Huxley. That’s all. Huxley University is based on the belief that ... “ to be one’s self is to be.” The University gets its name from T.H. The belief that there is need to bow up (saying and doing what one wants) and stick to your guns is essential. But still, what is Huxley all about? A few members offered these suggestions to aid in understanding: “You can’t de- Hamilton, Rick Seale, Brick Allen fine it, you just know it.” “When you’re Huxley material you know it. When you’re not, everybody else knows it.” Whether Huxley is understood by all remains to be seen, but for the mem¬ bers of this two-year organization the meaning is clear, Huxley lives. 82 Huxley Univ. Holmes 94 SMJC President President Horace C. Holmes has con¬ tributed much through his personality and true sense of dedication to SMJC. President Holmes’ personality brings out love and respect from both students and faculty members. He is thought of as a President, administrator, educator, counselor, and friend. We are fortunate that our President has such quality standards. It would be no exaggeration to say that in the past ten years there has been more renovation, expansion, and construction on our campus than in the past 40 years of Southwest. People have seen the completion of the Student Union, Men’s and Women’s Dorms, Fine Arts Building, and Learning Resources Center. The expansion of Vo¬ cational-Technical facilities and the Chapel were under construction this year. There is still more on the way. If one phrase is typical of President Holmes’ administration, it is “on the drawing board.” The growth of SMJC over the past 50 years indicates successful leadership as reflected in structural expansions, aca¬ demic excellence, and increased student enrollment. The students of 1979-80 are looking forward to continual success of SMJC under President Holmes’ lead¬ ership.—P.M. (“Sometimes” lyrics are by Felice Mancini; Music by Henry Mancini. It is sung by the Carpenters). THE PICTURE EVIL” On a hill beneath a tree Sat an artist, readily With tablet white and pencils keen To draw mankind as it was seen. He then observed—his pencils flew Cars and buses, avenues Crowded streets, staggering drunks Dark-alley stabbings, snobbish punks; Littered woodlands and dirty streams Poverty, pain, and sinful things Beggars, ladies-of-the-night All came to life upon the white. No sin forgotten, none witheld On paper, quite a living hell Provided for a sickening sight— So much to the artist’s delight Then far below, a busy street: An aging man on trembling feet Wishing to cross, he slowly began When from nowhere came a helping hand. The scene was short, the deed quite small But from the hill above them all Screamed the artist, much in pain His work was ruined by love again! Tomorrow he will come once more His sketch to finish as before But friends, while love and care remain The picture Evil shall not take frame ... —Dennis DeLee Summit gets “Fired up” on SMJC’s Homecoming. f r [S % H I £ m p%Jr ■ SM JC—50th Anniversary Highlights The Year l - ' I Closing 189 A Past To Honor ... A Future To Mold PREMIUM Above: Gas tank shows change. Above right: Start of SMJC’s interdenominational chapel. Right: Mrs. William Winter shown at her visit to SMJC with President Holmes SGA President Steve Stogner. SMJC in 1979-80 was exciting and monotonous, intense and tiring. More aware of national events than in recent years, we saw the price of gas rise to over $1.00, watched the Pope bless America on three networks, and read of Cuba’s infamous Castro speaking at the U.N. Femininism, although the Equal Rights Amendment is still pend¬ ing, became an increasingly accepted concept. President Carter’s scarcely discernible response to the Iranian crisis brought praise from some, dis¬ gust from others. These times laid foundations for the future and tore down pillars of the past. Comedians Ackroyd and Belushi left Saturday Night Live for bigger bucks as the Blues Brothers. Uni- maginitive disco tunes were slowly re¬ placed by creative New Wave music. As Who fans stampeded for seats in the poorly-run Riverfront Coliseum in Cincinnati, eleven young people were crushed. A major breakthrough in ani¬ mation was made when Kermit the Frog bicycled across the silver screen in The Muppet Movie. LSU’s new foot¬ ball coach, Bo Rein, was killed in a bi¬ zarre plane crash; real rock ‘n’ roll died along with Keith Moon, and to no one’s surprise, the matchless Sid Vicious popped off, too. In a lighter, local vein-many of us voted for the first time, electing Wil¬ liam Winter to the governor’s seat and winning ourselves extra points by turning in our ballot stubs. Southwest’s fiftieth anniversary Homecoming was celebrated by a narrow victory over arch-rival Co-Lin and several memo¬ rable parties. After completing and moving into the Vo-Tech’s new wing, we turned our attention, to the inter¬ denominational chapel and Project Charlie. Our childhoods, as the Seventies, have ended; our responsibilty to the fu¬ ture has begun. Whether we find cures for cancer and the common cold or grow good food and good children, we should hold in memory the wise words of Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.: “What the world needs now is a little less love and a lot more common decency.” —Susan F. Leggett 190 Closing The 1979-80 yearbook is finally com¬ plete. I will admit it was hard work putting this yearbook together—but well worth it now. I hope your year¬ book will mean half of what it means to me. For the past year the yearbook has become part of me; a part I will never forget. I have tried to grasp a part of SMJC that each person sees. Everyone has different memories of SMJC and I hope there is something in this yearbook for each one of you. I would like to say thank you to a number of people that have helped me and I have grown to love dearly. I would like to say thank you to all my staff members that helped bring this yearbook into being. I would like to es¬ pecially thank Mrs. Mildred Craig for her support and help through many trying times. Thank you for always giv¬ ing me a smile of encouragement. Special thanks to Jimmy Stephenson for always coming through with the pictures I needed. Thank you, Jimmy, for being understanding; but most of all for giving me moral support. Also thanks to Sandy Simmons and Mike Wells for their contributions in photography. I would also like to thank the admin¬ istrative staff for always giving me help and cooperation. Special thanks to Mrs. Jo Ann Young and Miss Frances Murry for allowing me to work on the yearbook in the library. Thank you, both for being so understanding and always there to listen to my problems. Also thanks to all our ad supporters. I could go on and on, but it would be impossible to name everyone that has helped me in some way. So here’s to another year Not just an ordinary year, but SMJC’s 50th anni¬ versary. I hope this was a year we will all remember. Patsy Kelly 1980 Editor Closing 191 Until We Meet Again Special Thanks To: Workers Patsy Kelly. Mrs. Neil Craig. Jimmy Stephenson Sandy Simmons ....
