The Bear Necessities Hold that line, Ladies, hold that line. ■jit :j Bear Necessities Day, 1978, was one of the most successful and most re¬ membered days of the 1977-1978 Southwest term. Students celebrated the end of the school year and their graduation. Shedding slacks and dresses and donning shorts, everybody met out on the football field for most of the activities, which included a Volkswagon push, a rope pull, a greased pig contest, three-legged races, sack races, and finally, canoe races on Bear Lake. Who could forget Keith Prescott’s big Mickey Mouse ears, or Myrna Rey¬ nold’s winning of the tobacco spitting contest? How about the giant Purina dog chow bags used for the sack race? And exactly who won the three-legged race? Under the direction of David Ball, president of the SGA, eggs were tossed and greased pigs were caught. At noon¬ time, Mrs. Pope provided everyone with a good lunch, and by the end of the day everyone was so tired and sun¬ burned that it was a shame to have to resume classes. Many of the soph¬ omores knew that they might never have fun with some of the people there again. But the freshmen carried on be¬ cause they knew that they still had the next year to look forward to at Southwest. Hopefully, Bear Necessities Day this year will be as much of a success as last year’s was, and maybe many more people will become friends by working together on a team than could be made friends by just going to class.
