Our feeder counties are: (A) Amite (B) Pike (C) Walthall (D) Wilkinson. We are black, white, Indian, Persian, Chicano. Some of us are Senior College bound; some have no desire to darken a classroom door again. We are male and female. Some of us are teachers, some administrators and some secretaries, but every morning at 8:00 we become one thing—the Southwest family- trying to get through another day. 6 A Variety Of Types •A Every day we are faced with many choices. From the mo¬ ment we get up in the morning (if we decide to get up) to the last late study hour, we have decisions to make. Because we live in the “land of the free” we are able to have this privilege. Probably one of the most important decisions of one’s life is made upon graduation from high school. Whether or not to go to college, work, get married, or whatever, this will af¬ fect him for the rest of his life. Although answers to prob¬ lems are sometimes difficult to find, looking is the key to finding them. Everyday decisions may seem complex at times. Choosing between two girls, which card to play, and favorite snacks are just a few. However, it’s the pondering and dreaming that help us to become what we are meant to be. ' i A 8 A Variety of Types Typical Southwest activity is (A) a trip to the Pik-n-Pak (B) a night out with the gang (C) a pizza and a movie (D) attending intramural sports activities (E) all of the above If you picked (E), you are right. Since we have such a choice, we are extremely busy. We come from all areas of the Southwest, so we have different hobbies and different ideas of fun. Whether we spend our time working for BSU, attending Student Government activities or just doing what we wish, we enjoy the freedom of choice. 9 (B) the Gossip and Gab Group (C) the Democratic Convention 2 J an s (A) expressing love (B) throwing a fit (C) singing Alma Mater 3. Right: This group of people standing in line at registration find ways to amuse themselves. Registration comes but twice a year and everyone looks forward to it. It is a funny sight to watch people go through the process, but it is even funnier to listen to what they have to say. “Have you pre-registered?” “Where are your pink cards?” “Please buy some SGA pens!” “If you don’t buy a parking permit you’ll be in bad trouble!” Now, after you dressed all up this morning and stood out in the rain it is picture-taking time. Finally, it is time to pay, but you can’t find the check anywhere. Oh yes, there it is, sort of damp, bent in places, and smeared. But after all, it’s been through a lot too. 12 c I Practice Makes Perfect ) 13 Let’s Get Acquainted! On September 7 from 8:00 until 12:00 the annual SGA sponsored “Get Acquainted Dance’’ was held in the Student Union. As students arrived, new faces were d iscovered and old friends were reunited. Soon the building was filled with people dancing to the music of “Papa Joe and Riverboat’’. How did you rate the dance? The final score of this important day was 71-59 with SMJC the victors once again. And Health Fair Blood Donor Day On October 31 a benefit costume dance was held in the Student Union for Mr. Joe Smith. Sponsored by the Student Government Association, $139 was donated. Prizes were awarded for the best costumes. First place winners “Kiss” received $15 for their hard work. A Spirited Week Leads Southwest Mississippi Junior College celebrated its 59th Homecoming on Oct. 8, 1977. Classes hon¬ ored this year were ’27, ’37, ’47, ’57, ’67, and 77. Also honored were the classes of ’27 (Golden Anniver¬ sary) and ’52 (Silver Anniversary). Troy Alford, president of the SMJC Alumni Asso¬ ciation presented inductees into the 1977 Sports Hall of Fame and the Alumnus of the Year their awards. Mrs. Willie Dee Felder, Natchez, was the re¬ cipient of the Alumnus of the Year Award. Sports Hall of Fame inductees were Roy Burris, Mrs. Pearl Brumfield Stout, Vester Newcomb, and former SMJC coach, E.S. Jenkins. On tour during the day were two new buildings— the Library-Learning Resources Center and the Fine Arts Building. Included also in the activities of the celebration was open house in the residence halls from 10 a.m. to noon; open house for campus buildings from 1 to 4 p.m.; reception for Alumni at 3 p.m.; general meet¬ ing for Alumni at 4 p.m.; and Alumni banquet at 5:30 p.m. Homecoming festivities were before the game at 7 p.m. All eyes were focused on Queen Judy Alford and her court as they were driven onto the track and then escorted to the center of the field. The exhibitions on campus were a result of the behind-the-scenes efforts of several groups. The Fine Arts Building received 1st place prize for deco¬ rations with Phi Theta Kappa winning 2nd, and the Sophomore class 3rd. As usual, girls with mums lined the stands. Band members, who had put in special practices that week, played melodious songs as the hundreds of fans who lined the stands watched the game attentively. The siren signaled the end of the game with a score of 16-6. The Bears were victorious over long¬ time rivals Co-Lin Wolves. Though it had been rain¬ ing on and off all day, only a chilly mist now cov¬ ered the stadium. Finally, it was time for the dance in the Student Union from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. Hugh Mack and the Magnolia Star entertained the happy, excited and tired fans. Although this marked the end of the Homecoming activities, all will agree that the entire week was a success. ■1 a T f Left to right: E.S. Jenkins, Mrs. Vester Newcomb, Mrs. Roy Burris, Mrs. Pearl B. The hard work and enthusiastic efforts the team had displayed during pre-season prac¬ tice paid off. Touchdowns by Steve Goodwin and Russell Knighton plus a tough defense proved too much for the Tigers. S.MJ.C. 14 N.E. 7 Rugged defense, strong punting and a rejuvenated offense was too much for the Hinds Eagles at Ray¬ mond on September 10. Gary Lewis threw touchdown strikes to Kadious Toney and Randy Caston. Anthony Williams tallied once and Brett Hughes threw a touchdown pass to Russell Knighton. A strong defense shot down the Eagles offense. S.M.J.C. 29 Hinds 0 “Defense is the name of the game.” This axiom proved to be so true as the Holmes Bulldogs and Bears tangled at C.C. Moore Sta¬ dium in McComb on September 17. The defense was outstanding—hold¬ ing the Bulldogs scoreless and scor¬ ing all the points in the game. Ken¬ neth Barnett recovered a Bulldog fumble for one touchdown. Leroy Taylor returned a punt for a touch¬ down. Michael Smith returned an intercepted pass for a touchdown, and Levern Lee recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown. The Bears’ record is now 3-0 and they are rated No. 7 in the nation. September 24, 1977 was not a day for the Bears to remember. A strong Gulf Coast team aided by many Bear mistakes handed the Bears their first loss of the season. S.M.J.C. 0 Perk 9 Homecoming at Ellisville with the Jones Bobcats, rated No. 1 in the na¬ tion, proved to be incentive enough for the Bears. However, a strong showing by the offense which tal¬ lied 408 yards total offense to 271 for the Bobcats, could not overcome the breaks of the game, and the Bears lost the second game of the season. Rusty Todd scored the Bears only touchdown. S.M.J.C. 7 Jones 14 Homecoming: October 8, 1977, John I. Hurst Stadium. Southwest vs. Co-Lin. The Bears bounce back by defeating arch rival Co-Lin Wolves. Again defense is strong and offense proves too much for the Wolves de¬ fense. Anthony Williams scored one touchdown. Gary Lewis tallied once and Winston Walker booted a 47 yard field goal. S.M.J.C. 16 Co-Lin 6 S.M.J.C. Holmes 25 0 October 15,1977 in Columbus, MS and a mysterious East MS Lion over¬ came a strong effort by the Bears to come away with the victory. S.M.J.C. 12 East MS 14 The East Central Warriors be¬ come the Bears fifth victim of the year as a dedicated Bear Team visits Decatur. Strong defense plus a good effort by the offense out-distanced the Warriors. Anthony Williams rushed for 214 yards and scored twice. Rusty Todd tallied once, Winston Walker boots a 15 yard field goal, and Bubba Willis punts for 50 yard average, and the Bears win 5. S.M.J.C. 22 East Central 10 1977 was the magic year as the Bears defeated a strong Pearl River Team for the first time in 10 years. The defense held a strong PRC of¬ fense to only 223 yards total offense and one touchdown. Gary Lewis played well for the Bears, scoring one touchdown and throwing a two point pass to Kadious Toney. Rusty Todd scored once for the Bears. “How Sweet It Is!” S.M.J.C. 14 PRC 6 Northwest becomes 7 at Sena- tobia on November 3. The offense was superb. Anthony Williams rushed for 228 yards ans scored 3 touchdowns. Russell Knighton scored on a 49 yard pass from Gary Lewis as the Bear offense rolled up 404 yards total offense. S.M.J.C. 28 N.W. 14 The S.M.J.C. Bears ended their 1977 season with a record of 7-3. Su¬ perb efforts by a truly outstanding group of young men proved to be the winning edge in 1977. The 23 dedicated sophomores, accom¬ panied by an equally dedicated group of 20 freshmen, led the Bears to their best record in 19 years. Several sophomores received nu¬ merous honors at the end of the sea¬ son. Anthony Williams was unani¬ mously selected to the All-State team as well as being named the most outstanding offensive back in the South Division. Anthony was also chosen to play in the All-Star Classic and was named to the J.C. Grid Wire’s Second Team All-Amer¬ ican Squad. He carried the ball 230 times for 1259 yards—the fourth best in the nation. Levern Lee was a unanimous choice for All-State honors as well as being chosen the most out¬ standing defensive lineman in the South Division. Levern Lee also played in the All-State Classic, and received Honorable Mention on the J.C. Grid-Wire All-American Team. Bubba Willis was chosen as the All-State punter for the second year. He was also honorable mention on the J.C. Grid-Wire All-American Team. Mike Rish was an All-State selec¬ tion at Linebacker. R.J. Prescott and Gary Lewis were chosen to play in All-State Classic. If you haven’t guessed, or don’t want to, it’s the description of the Student Government Association. Vital to the school’s well being was one of the major organizations at Southwest, the Student Government Association. These elected members contributed such activities at Southwest as Intramural Sports, Dances, Homecoming theme, Movies shown on campus, “Mama Bear” Contest, and permanent benches placed on campus. These members were the people who worked at Campus elections and supported them. It all starts with two pieces of clean paper, a pencil, a ru¬ ler, and a big eraser. But planning the layout is only the first step. Then comes the job of scouting the campus of South¬ west to find new and interesting stories. Assignments are made, and then everyone waits-until deadline day, that is, when there is a classroom full of stu¬ dents, pulling their hair, fighting over the typewriters and trying to find 50 more words to fill that 250 word blank. “The deadline’s tomorrow, and I can’t even think of a way to start my copy!’’ “Where s the cropper?’’ “Has anyone seen a grease pencil?’’ What a way to start tne day, but the conversation was en¬ tirely normal for the yearbook staff. The student body attended (A) what seemed like 5000 school days (B) 12 school days (C) 175 school days. One word that would sum up this school year is CHOICES Green grass atfd flowing steams or asphalt streets and concretjkbeams; Wooded forest and natural ditches or man’s own greedland personal riches; Forests with wildlife Bning through or just a trip to the local zoo; Mountains and valleys and open seas or polluted air and cut down trees; Freedom of speech and freedom to try ; . or ordered around and told when to die; Sparkling cities and very safe towns or murder, corruption, and crime all around; Loving parents with time for thefr child or neglected kids on the street running wild; People helping people in all of the places or bigotry and hate for the color of faces; These are the choices for the world and mankind Take your ase • • • ta e y° ur time. After working on this yearbook for nearly a year, it has become a part of me. I would like to acknowledge our excellent photographer, Cynthia Etheridge, because wthout her this annual could not have been made. Thanks also to Mrs. Mildrid Craig, yearbook adviser, who was supportive in the most trying times. Students attend Southwest for a variety of reasons. Many come to get an education, to pass the time, to play football, to grow up, to get away from home, to get married, to follow in big brother’s footsteps, to be with friends ... the list is endless. No matter the reason one attends Southwest, the time here is filled with experiences. New ex¬ periences that before long become a somewhat daily routine. We have tried to capture some of these unforgettable experiences in this “memory book be¬ cause these experiences will always be yours to treasure and forever love. Thanks to all of those who, in the past year and in the eighteen before it while living at South¬ west Jr. College, have given me a lot to laugh at, a lot to love, and a lot to look back on. Here’s to the songs we used to sing And here’s to the times we used to know It’s hard to hold them in our arms again And it’s hard to let them go. Lisa Reid 1978 Editor r L
