1977 SOUTHWEST MISSISSIPPI JUNIOR COLLEGE WHISPERING PINES SIMILES AND METAPHORS a This year the Whispering Pines editors and staff have chosen the theme of SIMILES AND METAPHORS for many obvious reasons. Southwest is like many prestigious institutions throughout society. It is a place of concern, con¬ centrated efforts for achievement, and pride. The school is a microcosm of the society. Both the benefits and barriers of the society can be found within its structure. Hopefully, of course, the good outweighs the problems and trials in¬ herent in any institution. The faculty is a plethora of philosophies, ideas, methods, and personalities, all working toward a common goal-excellence in education. The student body, similarly, is an ocean of thoughts, backgrounds, and ex¬ pectations waiting for aid in separating the troublesome from the beneficial. And, of course, the community can be likened to the beneficiary of a trust. The continuing successes of the surrounding communities dedicated to ex¬ cellence will be dependent upon the initial successes registered at Southwest Mississippi Junior College. Freshmen, having plenty of time to think and ponder new and ex¬ citing experiences awaiting them in college life, had the frustrating time of standing in line. Sophomores, accustomed to the long lines, re¬ counted summer experiences with friends not seen during their vacation. Faculty and Administration busily unpacked “the ole briefcase,” and prepared for the stampede of new faces and names to try to remember. Phi Theta Kappa members helped pull and alphabe¬ tize name cards, and also quenched the thirsts of stu¬ dents by serving free cokes. The Baptist Student Union, for an added attraction, served free slices of watermelon to hungry students as they left registration. Sophomores—anxiously awaiting the new year??? With speeches from both coaches and the co-captains, and the sweet sounds from the band, it was surely an event every¬ one will remember. Alumni Banquet Murmured voices and clanging silverware were the sounds heard at the annual alumni banquet. Alumni from past years and all sophomores gathered to eat and view the 1976 alumnist of the year. More over it was quite a time to share with everyone during the hectic schedule of the week before. Upon entering the stage band played a few tunes to brighten the atmosphere. The girls en¬ semble, a new added group, the Dynamics, and the full chorus sang several Christmas tunes that warmed everyones heart and got us into the Christmas spirit. The Gideons were the main at¬ traction and they passed out tiny bibles to every¬ one. The team was much better than their 3- rccord indicated. The Bears were hampered by poor w eather conditions, bad luck, bad breaks, and con- r °versial officiating. Gary Lewis who was primarily Us ed as a passing quarterback was injured much of the season and did not get much playing in, but he will be ac k next season for another try. Although Southwest had 156 points scored on them, °f those points came in the last two games when the aars Played the two contending teams for the state c ar npionship, Pearl River and Northwest. Anthony Williams cranked up the Bears offense and ex cited the crowds. He has the grace and ease of run- nin g a style that is the trade mark of many great run- ain g backs. The Bear defense spearheaded by Keith ° x at middle guard was unusually strong but was °rced to play long periods of time because of the of- e nse s inability to put together long, substaining drives. Robert “T” Felder, Hilton Harrell, and Melvin Matthews also aided in the Bear offense. Gary Littlefield, Felder, and Young pulled down most of the rebounds for the mighty Bears also. Littlefield, a freshman, played a strong defensive game much of the year. Wally Morris was the star de¬ fensive guard and was assisted by David McElveen and Steve Barks¬ dale. With the return of the injured Jesse Barksdale, he and Morris seem to have been the best pair of playmakers. McElveen, S. This year the choir at the 1977 Junior College Choir Fes¬ tival found themselves singing beautifully. Then in March the chorus toured Orange, Texas, for two days. The trip was not only informative, but enter¬ taining for the students who are always on the entertaining side themselves. This year the stage band is proud to be honored with a new set of stage drums, including four toms, two bass drums, and four cymbals. It surely has added much to the group this year. The stage band plays at almost all basketball games and has its own special show in the spring. This year’s stage band is truly one group our school can be proud of. Also, to the students who assisted with this yearbook, the school is grateful. Photographer Cindy Ether¬ idge worked tirelessly and cheer¬ fully to complete her work before deadlines, and Holly Kelley, de¬ signed the cover; to both these stu¬ dents, we say “Thank you.’’ To Mrs. W.H. Johnson for her assistance in typing, we also add our thanks. And for his unfailing support and loyalty in all decision-making mat¬ ters, the entire staff are indebted to President Horace C. Summit, Ms. Youngblood, Donald ... McComb, Ms. Zimmerman, Michael ... Ferriday, La. VERY LIKE A WHALE One thing that literature would be greatly the better for Would be a more restricted employment by authors of simile and metaphor. Authors of all races, be they Greeks, Romans, Teutons, or Celts, Can’t seem just to say that anything is the thing is is but have to go out of their way to say that it is like something else. What does it mean when we are told That the Assyrian came down like a wolf on the fold In the first place, George Gordon Byron had had enough experience To know that it probably wasn’t just one Assyrian, it was a LOT of Assyrians. However, as too many arguments are apt to induce apoplexy and thus hinder longevity, We’ll let it pass as one Assyrian for the sake of brevity. Now then, this particular Assyrian, the one whose cohorts where gleaming in purple and gold, Just what does the poet mean when he says he came down like a wolf on the fold? In heaven and earth more than is dreamed of in our philosophy there are a great many things, But I don’t imagine that among them there is a wolf with purple and gold cohorts or purple and gold anything. No, no, Lord Byron, before I’ll believe that this Assyrian was actually like a wolf I must have some kind of proof; Did he run on all fours and did he have a hairy tail and a big red mouth and big white teeth and did he say Woof woof woof? Frankly I think it is very unlikely, and all you are entitled to say, at the very most, Was that Assyrian cohorts came down like a lot of Assyrian cohorts about to destroy the Hebrew host. But that wasn’t fancy enough for Lord Byron, oh dear me, no, he had to invent a lot of figures of speech and then interpolate them, With the result that whenever you mention Old Testament soldiers to people they say Oh yes, they’re the ones that a lot of wolfs dressed up in gold and purple ate them. That’s the kind of thing that’s being done all the time by poets, from Homer to Tennyson; They’re always comparing ladies to lilies and veal to vension, And they always say things like that the snow is a white blanket after a winter storm. Oh it is, is it, all right then, you sleep under a six-inch blanket of snow and I’ll sleep of unpoetical blanket material and we’ll see which one keeps warm, And after that maybe you’ll begin to comprehend dimly What I mean by too much metaphor and simile. under a half-inch G blanket by Ogden Nash o c |Tii£ Assyrian came down like thfe wolf on the fold, A ri his cohorts were gleaming in purple ' ancigold; An the sheen of their spears were like Stars on the sea, IWhynJhe blue waye rolls nightly on deep Galilee. frqypi Thc f I%struction of Sennacherib by Byron 1 N - V, | % t As the lily among ’thorns?, so is love among the dau itefs Song of Solomon m V A thing of beauty is a joy forever from Endymion by Keats ■ Jr jp k Helen, thy beauty is to me . like those Nicaen barks of ycfre ' from To Helen by Edgar Allan Poe I’m as constant as the Northern star from Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare She walks in beauty, like the night j of cloudless climes and starry skies from She Walks In Beauty by Byron J Beauty is truth, truth beauty from Ode on a Grecian Urn by Keats A beautiful woman lacking discretion and modesty is like a fine gpld ring in a pig’s snout. An instant that can be caught in a familiar smile or word. The time spent here should be valued greatly, for it will never occur again. A yearbook represents the reflections of the past year and one that takes long, hard hours in preparing. Hopefully this book will bring back some happy moments as you thumb your way through. Special thanks should be given to a number of people without whose help this page along with many others in this book would not be complete. The workers have been like industrious architects, engineers, and building crews. Herff Jones Year¬ books, Inc. have weathered as well as professional sailors late pages, missed deadlines, and sometimes unclear directions to produce what we feel is the finest book EVER at Southwest. Sincere thanks should go to Cindy Etheridge for all her time and effort spent in taking, developing, and printing over three-fourths the pictures in this book. And special thanks should go to Mrs. Neil Craig and the Administration of this school for all the time and patience they have shown on many an excuse and missed deadline. As for myself, providing a year full of memories in one single book is one of the greatest accom¬ plishments I have ever done. We have tried to re-capture the highlights of 1976-77, but admittedly everyone has his own particular thoughts; however, if we have brought but one forgotten memory into focus of consciousness, then we have succeeded in our goal.
