Left: The business of moving in accompanied registration. 5 FALL REGISTRA TION GET-ACOUAINTED DANCE The Student Government Association sponsored a get-acq uainted dance to get the new school year off to a good start. The attire for the dance was blue jeans and most people came that way, except those who wanted to look a little better than the rest. The admission fee was $1.50 per person. A profit of sixteen dollars was cleared. The total money received at the door was $466.00. Approximately 310 people were at the dance. “Papa Joe and the Riverboat” of New Orleans was the band. 6 Debbie Carraway ‘Bumps’ her troubles away as “Papa Joe and the Riverboats” played the music. 7 STUDENTS PURSUING HAPPINESS The union seems to be a popular place to go to get away from the monotony of schoolwork. Whether it’s a game of pool, ping pong, or cards, the students find it a relaxing place to be. The union is also a popular place to be around at mealtimes when the students seem to pour in to have their meals or to get snacks from the grill. Randy Hammonds and Stanley McKnight display their ping pong skills. 8 Joe Justus finds fussball a pleasant way to spend an afternoon. Randy Hammons concentrates earnestly on his next shot. Christi and Jessie enjoy the meals at Southwest’s cafeteria. CAMPUS CONSTRUCTION Soon there will be no Simmons Library with a leaky roof. A new liberal arts building is under construction and it is hoped that it will be completed by the fall of 1976. This will be the site of a new library to aid the students in their studies. In the meantime, Simmons Library has been re-roofed. A leaky roof in the library can be quite messy. 10 Construction workers labor to repair the library’s roof. Progress can be seen on the new Liberal Arts Building. HOMECOMING PEP RALLY band helped rouse the spirit of the football team and fans alike. The team captains made their speeches and Coach Anders and Coach Davis voiced their faith in the team’s ability to win. GO BEARS! Southwest’s Homecoming game prompted a daytime pep rally. President Holmes gave the Bears encouragement and urged students to attend the game and participate in Homecoming activities. The cheerleaders and the pep The crowd looks on attentively at the cheerleaders at the pep rally before our Homecoming Game. The cheerleaders eagerly lead the crowd in a cheer. The Bears seemed to be fired up before the Homecoming Game. Coach Anders has difficulty in quieting the crowd. Coach Davis encourages the Bears to win Saturday night. 13 STUDENTS SUPPORT SOUTHWEST BEARS The outdoor pep rally stirs excitement among Southwest football fans. The Co-Lin dummy awaits his fiery doom. The football boys dance their way to victory. 14 15 Mr. Smith takes a break before going back to his job. Rita Ashley seems to have been very helpful the day pictures were made. Earl Hewitt. Mrs. Brister seems to be enjoying her coffee break. It is always easy to find a smiling face around Southwest’s campus. Being on a small campus, a student has the advantage of knowing almost everyone. It can often brighten some lonely student’s day to meet a cheerful face and receive a hearty greeting. FACES AROUND CAMPUS 16 Leah Porter obviously doesn’t care for cameras. Ginger Boyd smiles pleasantly as her picture is snapped . We all liked Steve Gardner’s new mask. Harvey McElveen and Thomas Sims are headed for the Union. On his way to Trigonometry, Robbie Travis stops to pose for a picture. 17 ft 50’S DA Y Those were the good old days; everyone at SMJC thinks so anyway. On 50’s day, the campus looked as if someone had turned back the pages of time. The girls were decked out in long skirts, bobby socks, and red lipstick. The boys wore rolled-up blue jeans, T- shirts, tattoos, sun-glasses, and slicked-back hair. They even listened to American Graffiti tapes at lunch. Bottom: Shooting a game of pool, Ginger Boyd makes quite a charming picture in her 50’s attire. 19 Gubernatorial Candidates Visit SMJC Southwest Mississippi Junior College had the privilege of visits from Gil Carmichael and Cliff Finch. Carmichael expressed his views on the political standards of the nation today. Cliff Finch made a brief stopover by helicopter on his way to the opening of the Bogue Chitto Waterway Park. Bottom: President Holmes welcomes Cliff Finch to Southwest. 20 FREEDOM OF CHOICE HOMECOMING 1975-1976 Girls are nominated for the homecoming court each year. Then they are chosen by popular vote. The football sweetheart is chosen by the football team. A queen, student body maid, football sweetheart, sophomore maid, and freshman maid are elected. For homecoming to be a success much hard work has to be done. This year many students and faculty members took part in making our homecoming a memorable occasion this year. BICENTENNIAL LOOK A T SOUTHWEST 28 Top left: The DECA club expressed “Happy Birthday to America” with a birthday cake. Top right: As soon as the visitors and alumni entered our campus they were greeted by the freshman class with this welcome sign. Center left: Betsy Ross and the original American flag was the SGA’s exhibit. Center right: This sign was made by the SGA. This year the SGA and the Alumni chose the Bicentennial as the homecoming theme. Each class, club, and dorm was to have a display at one of the buildings on campus. All displays were judged and first, second, and third place prizes were awarded. The athletic teams and cheerleaders made this sign to stress the importance of athletics. I 29 HALF-TIME PERFORMERS The SMJC band has 39 students including the Red Line. The band is under the direction of C. Shelton Whittington. They perform during half-time at football games. They also perform for special occasions such as the Pike County Fair and Jerry Clower Day. The drum majorette is Betty Jo Nunnery and the head of the Red Line is Darlene Godbold. Students must obtain a 3.4 average to become members and they must maintain a 3.0 to remain members. Phi Theta Kappa is a service-oriented organization. It does such things as helping students on Registration day and tutoring. This year, the Southwest Chapter was elected State President and State Reporter at the State Convention in Memphis. Later in the year they will attend a National convention in Biloxi. 32 B.S.U. The B.S.U. is sponsored by Mrs. Velma Soape of the First Baptist Church of Summit. It meets in Kenna Hall on Monday nights and is open to anyone who wishes to attend. B.S.U. has a 43 member choir. The following is a recap of the games. Sept. 4—SMJC—27, Delta-0 Wall was the first to score ... Williams second score ... McGraw recovered a fumble in the end zone for the final score ... This was the season opener and the first victory for the Bears. Sept. 11—SMJC—6, Hinds-15 At the half the Eagles lead 15—0 ... Late in the fourth quarter, the sleeping Bears were revived ... Ben Boyd had a 96 yard run-back for 6 points ... Offensive pass interference ended the Bears’ final threat and the game. Sept. 18—SMJC—6, Ittawamba—33 This was not the Bears’ night as Ittawamba played flawlessly at their home field. The statistics showed 311 yards rushing and 103 yards passing. Oct. 18—SMJC—0, Gulf Coast-14 Defense played and excellent game against one of the strongest teams in the nation. Lead me between you in the night, old friends, one living and one dead, and where the journey ends show me the city built as on a hill. John Winthrop saw long since and you see still. I almost saw it once, a law school boy born west beyond the Lakes in Illinois. Walking down Milk Street in a summer dawn, the sidewalks empty and the truckers gone, 1 thought the asphalt turned to country lane and climbed toward something, glimpsed and lost again— some distance not of measure but of mind, of meaning. Oh, of man, I could not find What city is it where the heart comes home? City of God they called it on the hills of Rome when empire changed to church and kings were crowned to rule in God’s name all the world around. Was this the city, then, of man?— this new found city, where the hope began that Eve who spins and Adam’s son who delves might make their peace with God and rule themselves?— this shanty city on a granite shore, the woods behind it and the sea before, where human hope first challenged Heaven’s will and piled a blazing beacon on a little hill?— city where man, poor naked actor on his narrow stage, confronted in the wilderness the God of Ages? Lead me between you to that holy ground where man and God contended and the hope was found. Moses upon the Sinai in the cloud faced God for forty days and nights and bowed; received the Law, obedient and mute; brought back to Israel the Decalogue of Duty. Not so New England’s prophets. When their arguments were done they answered thundering skies with their own thunder: “We have the Lord,” wrote Hooker with his wild goose quill, “We have the Lord in bonds for the fulfilling.” City of Man! Before the elms came down no village in America, no prairie town, but planted avenues of elms against the sky to praise, to keep the promise, to remember by— remember that small city of great men where man himself had walked the earth again: Warren at Bunker Hill who stood and died not for a flag—there was none—but for human pride; Emerson who prayed and quit the church, choosing not Heaven’s answer but the human search; Thoreau who followed footprints in the snow to find his own—the human journey he had still to go; Holmes dissenting in a sordid age, the Court against him and the rich man’s rage- Holmes who taught the herd how human liberty is won: by man alone, that sole minority of one. City of Man, Oh, city of the famous dead where Otis spoke and Adams’ heart was bred: Mother of the great Republic—mother town before the elm trees sickened and came down ... The darkness deepens. Shrieking voices cry below these fantasies of glass that crowd our sky and hatred like a whirling paper in a street tears at itself where shame and hatred meet. In 1948, he entered USM where he received his B.S. and M.A. He did graduate work at USM and MSU. President Holmes is married to the former Lefay McClelland, a Registered Nurse. They have two sons, Horace C. Holmes, Jr., and Larry M. Holmes. Horace C. Holmes has been President of SMJC since 1972. He had previously held the administrative positions of Dean of Men, Vice-President of SMJC, and Academic Dean of the college. Our purpose this year was to show life on our campus and how Southwest commemorated the nation’s 200th birthday. A great deal of work went into the 1976 Whispering Pines. Without the assistance of Debbie Carraway, assistant editor, and Bobby Bailey, photographer, I could not have produced this yearbook. I would like to give special recognition and thanks to Mrs. Neil Craig, who gave us so much needed support as yearbook advisor. I would also like to thank Ted Jackson and Jimmy Thomas for the fantastic art-work they did for us. I am grateful to the rest of my staff for the work they performed. I hope that each of you enjoys his yearbook and will look to 1976 at Southwest as one of the best years of his life.
