Will they become realities or disappointments? The choice is ours. We can sit back and watch the parade, or we can become involved and grow richer for it. 6 a flM There is so much we can do to help each other, if we only dare to become involved. If we will only look beyond ourselves and share someone else ' s load, our own will become lighter. We must make our own decision. «rV- PLACES New places. Soon they will become so familiar, we will wonder what we did before we came here. These places, and the people who frequent them, will become a very important part of our lives. In years to come, we will return. Perhaps these places will only be changed. However, we will hold them in our memories forever. I am the LIBRARY. I am neither walls nor shelves Nor even the books that Stand in rows. I am the wisdom of the Universe, Captured and arranged for you. I am an open door— Enter. Simmons Library means Service. S ervice means providing a variety of opportunities and resources to the students, fac¬ ulty and staff of Southwest Mississippi Junior College. Simmons Library serves by providing a comfortable well lighted facility in which to study, do reference work and read for knowledge and enjoyment sixty hours each week. It serves by providing some twenty thousand well selected books that correlate with the curricula in the academic and vocational technical areas, as well as providing for the rec¬ reational interests of students and faculty. Simmons Library further supports the curricula and recrea¬ tional reading by providing some 130 periodicals. Some fifty seven of these periodicals have been bound for the years 1958-1967. In 1968, Simmons Library began acquiring periodicals on microfilm. The periodicals formerly bond are now available on microfilm, from 1968-1972, and may be reviewed or printed on a microfilm reader printer. Back issues for 1973- 74 are located in boxes at the circulation desk. A photo co¬ pier is provided for reproducing any materials desired. The Mary Cain Collection consists of the Mississippiana ma¬ terials to aid those interested in learning more about our state. A vertical file on Mississippi is maintained for this pur¬ pose also. A general vertical file supplies clippings on a wide variety of subjects that may be difficult to find elsewhere. Three sound filmstrip machines aid primarily the social studies division with collateral visual and sound materials. This service is a beginning for the new learning resource center which more than multi media will be provided for all areas of the junior college program. Service is provided through the card catalog and the various other indexes for locating library materials. Simmons Library provides the assistance of two librarians, ten students and one senior aide. While each one has his own responsible tasks to fulfill, each is dedicated to the ser¬ vice of students and faculty of SMJC. When I ' m tossed it sends out a light, that I might see; and the light that shines in dark¬ ness, now will safely lead us o ' er. If it wasn ' t for the lighthouse, my ship would be no more. CHORUS And I thank God for the lighthouse, I owe my life to Him, For Jesus is the lighthouse, and from the rocks of sin. He has shone a light around me that I could clearly see. If it wasn ' t for the lighthouse, tell me, where would this ship be? Everybody that lives about us says, tear that lighthouse down, the big ships don ' t sail this way anymore, there ' s no use of it standing around. Then my mind goes back to that stormy night, when just in the time I saw the light. Yes, the light from that old lighthouse that stands up there on the hill. STAGE BAND The Stage Band of 1973-74, with it ' s jazz, rock, and blues, prove to be a tremendous success under the capable and inspiring leadership of Steven A. Jones. During the school year the Stage Band performed for various clubs and orga¬ nizations, both in and out of the state. The Band also had the privilege of performing for the Governor of the State of Mississippi. No stage band would be complete without dancers and soloists. With Marsha Kimble, Debbie Norman, Kathy Jones, Ava Greer, and Joy Alford dancing to tunes such as Tuxedo Junction and Everything ' s Coming Up Roses; and Judy Fortenberry and Curtis Brewer, singing tunes like Top of the World, I ' ve Got to be Me, My Way, and Caberet, undoubtly kept the audience spellbound. Never before has a Stage Band possessed such caliber with potential in the band, as well as it ' s director. Therefore, with our most humble sincerity and gratitude, we dedicate our¬ selves, S.M.J.C. Stage Band 1973-74, to our director, Mr. Ste¬ ven A. Jones. by Hal Sterling . j j: i - 1 I, A Front Row Left To Right: Ed Swanagin, Ronnie McCall, Mike Jones, Sylvia Hartzog, Terry Quinn. Tryouts for the group were held at the beginning of the school year. Based on marching and dancing talent, twelve girls were selected to be a part of the Redline along with captain, Marsha Kimble. The Redline performed at all home football games, several out-of-town games, the Pike County Fair Parade, and four area Christmas Parades. The Four dances for the stage band, at left, are chosen from the Redline. The music is mostly jazz and the dancing is a completely different type from the marching season. It is a rewarding challenge to get a stagehand dances because the girls work together making up new routines, designing cos¬ tumes, and practicing extremely hard—by Marsha Kimble. Back R ovV COACHES: Floyd Davis, Roger Bynum. The Southwest Miss. Junior College Bears had a long rugged season in football, filled with joy, heartbreak, and sadness. Even though the Bears finished with a 1-9 season, they ac¬ complished four major goals. The first of these was to win football games. And they surprised everyone in the state when they beat a tough East Miss, team 3-0, in the first game of the season. This win broke a two year loosing streak. The second of these goals was the starting of Fresh¬ men. The bears played many Freshmen, who gained valu¬ able game experience. The third goal accomplished was the naming of John Ogden and Keith Davis to the All-State Ju¬ nior College Team. A great honor for the school. And, fi¬ nally, after his first season at the head coaching post, Floyd Davis gained the experience needed to head coach in the ranks. FJe will know what to expect of his new sophomores, and his interested freshmen. The 1973 season was exciting for Bear followers. The taste of that first victory, and the near wins against Northeast and Itawamba. But the 73 season is over and come next fall look-out . Before the season started it was said that the Bears had no talent, they would finish last in the confer¬ ence standings, and would be lucky to win any games. Well a lot of words were eaten this season, and the Bears did the serving. The Bears had one of their best seasons in years. The Bears had their share of stars too, with tall, high-scoring Tyler Thompson, burning the nest with consistant 20 point games. Billy Frog Froechtenicht, a quick playmaker who made the team go. Sophomore leadership from Wayne Hagan, along with good play by Freshmen, Paul Hough, Lynell Matthews, John Ball and Anderson Ta- plin also helped the team. Coach Oliver Young built a fine team, and surprised many people, maybe even himself. 1973-74 BEARS w sketbaM Team: Left to Right: David Stewart, Greg Sartin, Paul Hough, a Vne Hagan, Lynell Matthews, Tyler Thompson. ft: Tyler Meets Hillard of Co-Lin. The team is undefeated, with their biggest win coming in January, when the team traveled to Mexico City and defeated twice, the Mexican Olympic team. They have brought international as well as national horror to SMJC. THE UNDEFEATABLE MEAT-MAMMAS Powderpuff Action At SMJC November 14, 1972, 7:30 P.M. at John J. Hurst stadium. Event: the first powderpuff football game. The Meat-Mam¬ mas, who were then Freshmen, put up a mighty struggle and went on to beat the Super-Sophs 12-0. The Super- Sophs were crushed that a bunch of little Freshmen could beat them, but it was too late for them. One year later, November 13, 1973, the Meat-Mammas once again took the field. Uppermost in their minds was what had happened to the Sophomores of a year before. They were determined not to let it happen to them. After a tough, bruising game, the Meat-Mammas again were the victors with a 14-0 win over their opponent. With that vic¬ tory, the Meat-Mammas set a record of 2 wins; 0 losses; and 0 ties. They also proved that they were tough be not letting opponents get a single point. To the players and coaches of the Meat-Mammas we extend our heartiest congradulations and hope they do as well inlife. To all the players, coaches, and other participants we extend our thanks for making the powderpuff game such a success. John Walker 70 Cheerleaders were elected to cheer heir teams to victory. The Soph- °rnore cheerleaders, above, are, left t° right, John Ogden, Moose Tolbert, ark Erdey, Wade Kerr, and Eddie °rd. The game would hot be com¬ plete without its court, right. The c °urt consisted of a Queen—Front— Hilton Young and escort, a Freshman aid—left—Bob Newman and escort, n d a Sophomore Maid—right—Mike wls and escort. 74 % To express a fitting tribute to Jane Goza would be impos¬ sible, for she possessed immeasurable virtues. A radiant smile was her password; a smile that never lost its bright¬ ness, even during her illness. In this smile one could see real courage, surpassed by no one. We at Southwest Mississippi Junior College can be thankful for the opportunity we had to know Jane, for that kind of opportunity comes very seldom in life. These words are not an original tribute to Jane, but a loving repetition of the words said of her while she was living. 82 ° u gh the physical life of Israel Garner Jr. ended abruptly October 12, 1973, in an automobile accident, the in- o er| ce of Israel will never end. Rather, it will become part an ever-widening concept of true sportsmanship. A real 0r tsrnan he was—in the finest sense of the term. Com- S |?j e V committed to basketball, he exhibited matchless I ln Paying the game, accruing an enviable record, and y ' Hating in his being named Most-Valuable Player of the ' ear. More important, however, than his ability to play ball was his congeniality, Israel liked everyone, and found this ami¬ cableness returned by all. He showed his teammates how to play ball; he showed his fellowman how to live. Robert Louis Stevenson wrote: Anyone can carry his bur¬ den however heavy until nightfall. Anyone can do his work, however hard, for one day. Anyone can live sweetly, pa¬ tiently, lovingly, purely till the sun go down. And this is all life really means. Israel Garner must have known what life really means. 83 PEOPLE New Faces. Will they become new friends, or will they remain as anony¬ mous as the leaves passing in the au¬ tumn breeze? Again, we must each make our own decision. There is so much we can learn, not only from our teachers, but from other students. We need only take the time to listen. Each time we do, we make a new friend. No man is the whole of himself: his friends are the rest of him. OUR PRESIDENT The president of a college is the nucleus of the institution. He has the responsibility of seeing that everything proceeds according to plan. In addition, he must keep the lines of communication open between his office, the faculty, and the students. The key to a good president is understanding. President Holmes has combined this quality with patience, consid¬ eration, and a great deal of hard work to do his best for SMJC. AN ESSENTIAL PART OF SMJC Although sometimes hard to find, our administration makes their presence felt in many ways. They can be counted on whenever we need help with classes, schedules, advice on se¬ lecting a major, or even help with a personal problem. Above: Dean Miller. Left: Dean of students, jerry Reid. 87 We often see these people only in their offices, busy at work behind lit¬ tered desks. Even though we may not always understand their work, they are an essential part of SMJC. Without them so much of the progress that has been made in the past years would have been impossible.
