It Wasn t. The best team effort of Notre Dame could have done n ° m ore. The Bears were the smallest team in the junior col- kge loop and they were playing some of the best teams in years in the down fallen conference. The year saw head coach Jerry Reid replaced by Floyd I avis. Davis is a Tylertown native with six years experience in coaching field. The crowning event of the year was the selection of Doug arnado and James Sturdivant to the all state team. Both were defensive standouts on the Bears unit. The team met with misfortune from the start as injuries pla¬ gued the Bears and some tough breaks put the skids to the Bears record. Sophomore quarterback Gary Lee injured and the pendalum started its deadly swing. Lee never returned to action as the Bears lost one after another. His replacements. Butch Williams and Sonny Roberts, performed well. The Bears lost some very close gam es and never went down without a fight. Williams and Roberts gained very valuable playing ex¬ perience and should be valuable in the future to some senior college team. 39 Bears fight with Determination 40 A football team is an army of devoted players fighting for a commom purpose: fighting for victory. The training and hard practice they must endure goes unnoticed by most people. The Bears practiced every day for several tough hours of sweat, heat, and dirt. Free time was valuable, and studying was a neces¬ sity. All the practice and working out gave way to a closely kni tted team with enthusiasm and pride to endure any conflict. Signs of Encouragement were Everywhere Evident from the bright signs all over the campus, the student body kept the spirit going strong throughout the football season. Top Right: Coach Young proudly holds up our bear after getting it back from Co-Lin the night before. 46 “We got the bear back!” Voices yelled victoriously the night the Bears met the Co-Lin- wolves for the first time. The SMJC student body not only gave the Bears fantastic support, but they recovered the wooden bear taken by some Co-Lin students a few years earlier. The Co-Lin stu¬ dents had been waving the bear at Southwest students for several years during the games. The re¬ covery of the bear high-lighted the hard-fought game by the bears. 47 Basketball is a tedious, nerve-racking sport which no ama- ture can play successfully. The sport takes hours of training and conditioning. You can rest assured that Coach Young had his Bears trained efficiently and definitely in shape. To a dedicated basketball player there are three main as¬ pects in his life: First of all, religion which gives him a feeling of warmth, love, and satisfaction; Secondarily, his family which gives him encouragement; Thirdly, is basketball, the game in which he has spent half of his life learning to play, together, talk together, cry together, laugh together, and fi¬ nally they play the game together. Victory is received with great pride and joy while defeat is a hard slap in the face. But the mark of a good team is to never give up and to play each game as if it were the last. This is what the Bears of SMJC did this year. They gave it their best, never gave up, and even though the scoreboard didn’t show it sometimes, they were our champs.—Curtis Brewer Left: John Weekly goes up for a basket. Tips Club is Active in Community Projects.. “Concern” is an important word to the Tips Club. During the Thanksgiving season, the members prepare a food basket and deliver it to someone in need. Christmas is a busy time spent in giving happiness to an orphan. Each Year TIPS adopts a child from the Baptist Children’s Village in Jackson, Miss. They surprise the child with a visit and a load of Christmas toys and clothes. They also send him something for Easter. 53 The purpose of the Fu¬ ture Secretaries Associa¬ tion is to bring to the stu- dent a better understanding of the business world, through association with experi¬ enced secretaries. This program stimulates inter¬ est in the secretarial pro¬ fession, and encourages an appreciation of the im¬ portance of basic skills. It also encourages students to aspire to a high level of competence through a continuing program of education after gradu¬ ation from school or college. The primary objective of the Distribution and Marketing Technology curriculum is to prepare students for full-time em¬ ployment in the different areas of Marketing and Distribution. The graduate of the DMT program will have the opportunity to begin a career at any point from the beginning sales person to an owner or manager in the field of business. One of the advantages of this program is that enrollment is available to both male and female on an equal basis. 54 “OK ya’ll, let’s yeU!” The student Body is proud of our 1972-72 cheerleaders. They have done much for the spirit of Southwest this year. Pep Rallies were brightened with hilarious skits and lots of new cheers. The Cheerleaders attended a cheerleading camp last summer at Perkington Jr. College where they won two awards fur superiority and two awards for excellency. But has there ever been a perfect year? Has there ever been a year When all the love and health and fame We wished for one another Ever came to pass? Yes, despite the disappointments of these, our complex lives. We learn to make do make better make believe That better days will come. And if we do continue to believe Who is to say The perfect year Will not yet be here? —author unknown to editor 56 J Pper Left: Construction begins on the new men’s dorm, a sign of growth. Clubs were busy working on their cars and floats for the annual Homecoming parade. Behind the scenes the administration and faculty planned the activities, parade, and the alumni meeting and banquet. SGA members sold corsages and prepared for the Homecoming dance. The total working of students and faculty at SMJC made the ’72 Homecoming successful and unique. Both dorms were open to everyone displaying brightly painted rooms. As time for the parade approached, dark clouds invaded the sky and every¬ one crossed his fingers. The parade was successful in McComb. But it drowned on the way to Summit. Then it was ev¬ ery man for himself. Cars and floats gradually disappeared from the parade route. But it was fun anyway. Reluctantly, the rained stopped in time for the presentation of the Home¬ coming court on Hurst Field. Members of the 1972 Homecoming court were: Janet Vamado, Queen; Vicky Pierce, Football Maid; Vicki Tumbow, Student Body Maid; Val Balser, Sophomore maid; and Linda Cimmins, Freshman Maid. During the half, the alumni were presented. Jerry Clower, comedian, was honored as the alumnus of the year. Following the game students danced to the music of the Isosceles Popcicle. It was an idea that changed much from its original purpose. It was accompanied with much con¬ flict from the dreading of dead¬ lines with still much to do. But there were the fun moments when we made so many mistakes that there was nothing left to do but laugh. It was horrifying to think that something was lost or ruined. But all the planning and work made this year as editor a worth¬ while year in my life and I guar¬ antee I’ll never forget it. I would like to thank everyone who did something for this an¬ nual. Also those students who were not able to have their pic¬ ture with the staff are Margie Neyland, Marcie Bounds, and Tonia Logue.—Val Balser At Last, a Completed Idea Top Left: Mary Fellows and Val Balser busy at work. Misspell a name or goof on a story and the complaints pour in. Every¬ one expects a good job from a newspaper. The Pine Burr Staff has worked extra hard this year to include new type of stories and polls. Under the direction of Brian Askew, Edi¬ tor, the staff has produced numerous articles of interest di¬ rected toward student attitudes. The Pine Burr Staff members are: Marsha Brock, Assis¬ tant Editor; April Timmons, News Editor; Marsha Kimble, Club Editor; John Walker, Alumni News Editor; Tommy Daughdrill and Art Fesmire, Sports Editors; Anita McCaffery, Feature Editor; Dwight Bridges, Cartoonist; Ricky Johnston and Cecil Rimes, Photographers; Mary Johnson and Melinda Brumfield, Typists; Bob Kleinpeter, Circulation Manager; Anita Carraway, Val Balser, Mary Johnson, Katherine Milton, and Jane Grega, Reporters. Right: Brian Askew, Editor. Above: Val Balser, Lee Williamson, Marsha Brock, Bob Kleinpeter, Art Fesmire, Jane Grega, Brian Askew. The House of the Mouse The House of the Mouse Exclusive is a fun-loving organization dedicated to promoting fellowship among student groups. All students are actively urged to join this inspiring plutocracy since they have already donated to the Mouse Club Treasury when they paid their tuition fee. This little known fact allows carefully selected members to throw ex¬ travagant parties otherwise not affordable. It is with this thought in mind that we extend SMJC our kindest regards and best wishes. The House of the Mouse also introduced intramural sports to Southwest by organizing a volleyball team, the Fighting Mice. They played P.E. boys and the football team along with other groups. It was a successful year for intramural sports and the Mouse Club. First Row: Bob Kleinpeter, Meynell Wilson, Marc Wilson, Marsha Brock, Patti Wilson. During the Christmas season the band marched in six parades throughout the four counties. They made quite a name for Southwest. But they agreed that six pa¬ rades was too much for their feet. 94 The members of the 1972-73 SMJC Marching band are as follows: Keith Blackwell, baritone; Marcie Bounds, redline; Joseph Callendar, trom¬ bone; Donna Ditcharo, drums; Lana Felder, bells; Willian Ford, drums; Debra Halbert, red- line; Johnette Hay, redline; Don Jackson, tuba; Mary Johnson, redline; Marsha Kimble, redline; Robert Kleinpeter, cymbals; Tonia Logue, French horn; Ben Magee, trumpet; Richard McMorris, tuba; Debra Norman, redline; George Oakes, trumpet; Phillip O’Donnell, trumpet; Ginger O’Quin, redline; Linda Owens, trumpet; William Ratcliff, saxophone; David Robinson, drums; Wanda Watts, clarinet; Mey- nell Wilson, redline; Melinda Laurie Van, red- line; Bonnie Atchison, saxaphone; Debba Brown, bells; Tommy Lear, drum major; Gwennie Sorrels, redline; Leroy Atchinson, trombone; Mary Atchison, saxaphone; Wrenell Bond, bells, Marsha Brock, saxaphone; William Callender, trombone; Dub Darville, baritone; Ike Fesmire, drums; Herby Hyatt, trombone; Tony Prescott, trumpet; Susan Prestridge, clari¬ net; Charles Sterling, trumpet; Vicki Tumbow, redline.
