Southwest Mississippi Junior College Summit, Mississippi WHISPERING PINES 1970 Editor: Mildred Purl Although the halls of SMJC look the same as they did years ago, many feet have trod the cor¬ ridors, contributing to the growth and develop¬ ment of the school. The laughter of students has bounced and echoed through the halls, but the quiet of classes hard at work has also crept through the halls. The pe rsonalities of these stu¬ dents have seeped into SMJC to create a unique character—a mixture of the good, the fun-loving, the eager, and the studious. SMJC has matured in both personality and curriculum. A spirited interest in our school world and a driving need to answer the challenge of the adult world have demanded that the course of study be improved from that of years ago. In addition each fresh¬ man class enters to obtain as much as possible from SMJC. Upon graduating that same class takes a part of SMJC with it; but SMJC retains more than has been taken away. After many years, SMJC has grown to its present command¬ ing stature with grace and dignity. 3 TABLE OF ADMINISTRATION ATHLETICS HOMECOMING SOPHOMORES ACTIVITIES CONTENTS VOCATIONAL-TECHNICAL TRAINING FRESHMEN WHO’S WHO HALL OF FAME SNAPSHOTS Mr. H. You have meant much to our program. You are living in and are a part of an all important age. You have observed many accomplishments in the quest of outer- space in spite of the unrest that exists in many parts of our country. Continue to build on a foundation that will be one of gen¬ uine stability, so that when your college days are over and you find your places of leadership in the area where you will reside, you will be able to do more for yourself, your country, and the cause of the Kingdom of God. Look-up and onward in your search for truth and knowl¬ edge, and let us know at Southwest if we can serve you in 7 Mrs. Marilyn Seated: Hollis Alford, Britte Hughey, Annie Andrews, Henry Lewis. The possession of qualities such as dignity, dedication, and leader¬ ship brought about his election to the office of President of the Student Government Association for his Sophomore year. He has been very active on our campus and has done all within his power to assist the school in improving. Being a member of tremendous value, he has contributed much to the Phi Theta Kappa. Lindsey was escort to our Queen in the Home¬ coming Court this fall. The privilege has been his to participate in the sports of basketball and tennis during his Freshman and Sophomore years. His stupendous personality has won for him many friends and honors. For his impressing qualities, it is with beaming pleasure that he is given a place in our 1970 Hall of Fame. 142 Wilma Bates Characteristics which include dependability, determination, loyalty, and courtesy have given this inspiring student a definite spot in this section of our yearbook. The Student Government Association office of Secretary has been held and well handled by this capable Sophomore girl. With much gratitude, I would like to express my appreciation and thanks to all the members of the staff, for their efforts in ad¬ vertising, sales, photography, and the many small things that were necessary in putting together the ’70 WHISPERING PINES. A special thanks goes to our sponsor, Mrs. Stephenson, without whose help and cooperation the publishing of this book would have been virtually impossible. To Mr. and Mrs. Norman Gillis, Jr. I am ex¬ ceedingly grateful for granting to us the permission to use their lovely home in the photographing of our Who’s Who pictures. We hope the pleasure, joy, and special memories that you have will seem real again as you turn these pages. I hope that we have captured just a few of the experiences that will bring back mem¬ ories of your days at SMJC. The experience of editing this book has been one of great reward. To you, the staff and I present the 1970 WHISPERING PINES. The WHISPERING PINES Staff Mildred Purl, Editor
