31V•£3 i? r n 4 19«9 V SOUTHWEST MISSISSIPPI TUNXOff COLLEGE SUMMIT, MISSISSIPPI EDI TOP: TOYCE TONES TREE OF Administration Sophomores Freshmen Vocational-Technical Training Activities iff CONTENTS Athletics Homecoming Who ' s Who Hal of Fame Bear Tracks 1 L 4 4 E oreivon A school building is constructed of steel and ce¬ ment, strong and permanent, but it is designed to ac¬ commodate an ever-changing flow of students. Year after year people stream in waves into the hallways and classrooms. To the rhythm of bells, tides of people wash in and out of the rooms and corridors and finally leave the building empty. Carl Sandburg in his poem Skyscraper says it is the men and women, boys and girls so poured in and out all day that give the building a soul of dreams and thoughts and memories. As each individual forms a part of the mass, so each personality contributes to the entirety of the soul of Southwest— that abstract thing we call school spirit. Soon the class of 1969 will be leaving this student body. Humbly they will pick up their packs and walk purposely onward. There is much that still must be done, and the trail is beckoning. 5 Dedication Sparkle, wit, radiance—these are the words which characterize our choice for the person to whom the 1969 Whispering Pines is dedicated. Your cheerful smile and unfaltering desire to assist brightens the day of all those around you. Always offering a comforting word and a helping hand when one is needed, she has won the respect of faculty and the love of students. A devoted worker, a wise counselor, a loyal supporter of Southwest: this is the person to whom all Southwest turns for advice. For your rare ability to combine fun and work, for talent to add pleasure and satisfaction to learning, for your efforts to be a true friend and to devote your all to us, we proudly dedicate the 1969 Whispering Pines to you. I appreciate the fact that your time spent at Southwest has been to search for knowledge and better prepare for senior college or become an important part of the busi¬ ness world with your chosen work. I wish for you the most of all good things in life and God ' s speed in all your future endeavors. Seated: Homer W. Addison, Hollis Alford, H. H. Huffman, Britte Hughey, Harold A. These character traits not only won him many friends and honors but also a place in the Hall of Fame. His ability to lead caused him to be elected President of the Student Government Association and Vice-President of the Phi Theta Kappa. In these positions he has served faithfully. Gene served as an escort for the Homecoming Court both his Freshman and Sophomore years, and was also elected Mr. SMJC his Sophomore year. He has participated on the basketball and tennis teams. For his achievements, it is with great pleasure that we give him a place in our 1969 Hall of Fame. 132 Allan Hutto Sincerity, dependability, and loyalty are some of the characteristics of Allan. She has found great enjoyment in giving a helping hand whenever needed. She has been active in many school activities, proving her leadership as Vice-President of the Freshman Class, Treas¬ urer of the Student Government Association, Treasurer of the Phi Theta Kappa, Secretary of the Wesley Foundation, and Who ' s Who Editor of our Whispering Pines. She has also partici¬ pated on the volleyball and tennis teams. A truly all-round student, Allan is a most worthy member of the 1969 Hall of Fame. 133 In his own quiet, pleasant way Steve embodies the qualities that a member of the Hall of Fame should possess. Loyal, dependable, friendly, courteous—he has served faithfully and well as Freshman Class President and as a member of the Student Government Association. Steve, well liked by his classmates, was elected Class Favorite his Freshman year. He was also very active in sports; participating on the baseball, track, and football teams. No task has been too difficult for him to accept, or too insignificant for him to give his best. Steve has earned his place of honor in our 1969 Hall of Fame. 134 to This charming Sophomore girl has earned her place at SMJC. Her pleasant personality and enthusiasm characterize the Cheryl we know and love. Cheryl ' s friendliness, her leader¬ ship ability, and her habit of always doing her best has endeared her to all of us. She has taken an active part on the Annual Staff, and was elected Most Courteous her Sophomore year. She has also participated on the basketball, tennis, and volleyball teams, as well as serving as a cheerleader for two years. Truly, Cheryl deserves her place in the 1969 Hall of Fame. 135 138 Just passing through. Hutto, you blew it again! Natchez, Mississippi WE SALUTE OUR PATRONS As the curtain is drawn at the end of another year at SMJC it seems only fitting that I should take this opportunity to thank all the people who made the 1969 WHISPERING PINES a reality. To each member of the staff, and to our sponsor, Mrs. Stephenson, may I say thank you for your guidance and cooperation. I am also grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Covington, Jr. for allowing us to use their lovely home for the photographing of our Who ' s Who pictures. We, the staff, sincerely hope that the 1969 WHISPERING PINES will bring you much pleasure and joy now and in the years to follow. We have tried to present a few of the pleasant experiences of this year, and it is our sincere wish that the moments special to you have been preserved so that when you view these pages your memories of SMJC may be refreshed. Publishing this book has been a pleasure and a privilege, and the staff and I are happy to present this 1969 WHISPERING PINES to you. The WHISPERING PINES staff Joyce Marie Jones, Editor
