PRESENTING The 1968 WHISPERING PINES SOUTHWEST MISSISSIPPI JUNIOR COLLEGE Summit, Mississippi tft tWttVf m tirttV; rtt ttfitu f M ttt t : w, wv ( 2 Foreword Dedication Administration Who ' s Who Activities Athletics Homecoming Kampus Kapers Sophomores Freshmen Contents FOREWORD Many days were filled with work, play, tears, and laughter as 1967 faded into 1968 at Southwest. Football highlighted the fall with pep rallies, and most important, Homecoming. Thanksgiving, and Christmas, with a smattering of basketball prac¬ tice, came and went with many wonderful memories left behind. The green Freshmen soon became almost so¬ phisticated Sophomores as Spring blossomed with the Azalea Trail and suddenly graduation loomed ahead. Many will leave to follow other paths while some remain to carry on the old Southwest tradition. The Whispering Pines, along with the Pine Burr, closes shop for another year with a sigh for days gone by. Those memories, we hope, will always be at hand to re-live many precious moments spent dur- ing that unforgettable 1967-68 school year. 4 y 5 DEDICATION Miss Olive Hay 6 1 We dedicate our annual to a woman who is herself dedicated ... to South¬ west, to us as students, and to life itself. Miss Hay, you have made us learn even though we often wanted to lag behind in our studies. We have you to thank for giving us a broader interest in the world of literature and speech. Your expressiveness in teaching has made each class period an adventure in learning. The 1968 Whispering Pines is only the tangible means of containing the intangible admiration that we have for you. Therefore, we dedicate our year¬ book, which is so all important to our two years at Southwest, to you-Miss Hay. 7 SOUTHWEST MISSISSIPPI JUNIOR COLLEGE Summit, Mississippi 39666 OFFICE OF PRESIDENT The Sophomore Class of 1968 Southwest Mississippi Junior College Summit, Mississippi 39666 Dear Sophomores; We hope that your stay at Southwest has aroused a spirit of enthusiasm within you toward accomplishing your future goals. If we have succeeded in exciting the spirit of progress within each individual, then our efforts have not been spent in vain, and we are happy. It is our hope that the foundation that you have gained here will inspire you to higher planes in the years ahead, and each of you, when you become an Alumnus of Southwest, may exclaim in all truth and sincerity, I helped make Southwest what it is , and it is mine. I wish you God ' s speed in all of your future endeavors. 9 ADMINISTRATION MR. E. R. ANDREWS: Business Manager, B. A., University of Mississippi; M. A., Uni¬ versity of Southern Mississippi. MR. As treasurer of the Student Government Association and a member of Phi Theta Kappa, George has dene his part to make SMJC a better place for other students. We welcome this outstanding student to the 1968 Hall of Fame. 110 As editor of the school paper. The Pine Burr, Susan Price has had her hands filled, planning the copy material, layouts and deadline dates during the past year. Susan, an English major, is also a member of the Westminster Fellowship, Phi Theta Kappa, and the Student Government Association. A quiet girl, she is well-liked by her teachers and fellow-students and is most deserving as a Hall of Fame member. A pre-med major, Victor Walsh lends a distinctive air of scholarship and poise to the 1968 Hall of Fame. His Willingness to serve has made him a favorite with all of the faculty members and students. Victor is president of Phi Theta Kappa, a member of the Student Govern¬ ment Association and the Baptist Student Union. We proudly welcome him into SMJC Hall of Fame. 112 Another worthy choice for the 1968 Hall of Fame is Sammie Sue Fenn. Sammie, a business education major, serves SMJC as editor of the WHIS¬ PERING PINES and secretary of the Student Government Association. She is also a member of the Baptist Student Union. This most active student is indeed welcomed to the 1968 Hall of Fame. omore 114 Class 115 JOHN ADAMS Summit, Mississippi THOMAS PAUL ALLEN Basketball, Baseball NORMA GAYLE ALLMAND McComb, Mississippi RUBY LYNN ARD Franklinton, Louisiana Paper Staff LEE EDWARD BARKDULL Summit, Mississippi TOMMY CHARLES BEASLEY Gloster, Mississippi PHILLIP BLACKWELL McComb, Mississippi STANLEY BOYD Tylertown, Mississippi 116 PHILLIP RAY BRANCH Tyler town, Mississippi Basketball LEE ROY BREWER, JR. Those two words, although they say much, cannot begin to express the gratitude and apprecia¬ tion that I feel toward the many people who helped complete this book of memories. Mrs. Stephenson, as sponsor, has worked very hard helping to correct er¬ rors and making certain the pages were complete and to the press on time. Mr. Wilbur Pickett and Mrs. Julia Blount of the Enterprise-Journal Staff have been especially helpful in giving me advice on the appearance of a yearbook. Photographs, of course, make a yearbook, and I sincerely thank Mr. J. Lyons Balser and the annual staff photographers for doing an excellent job. Most of all, I would like to express my appreciation . . . to a very capable and understanding staff. Without them there would be no WHISPERING PINES Yearbook. Now, our space has ruri out, so we say. Enjoy re-living wonderful mo¬ ments at SAAJC through the 1968 WHISPERING PINES.
