$ Jr, 00 ' Hegg tfoftn 3 H91 5 ? 0 A t 7 SOUTHWEST AHSS SS m JUNIOR COLLHiE SUMMIT, MISSISSIPPI EDITOR Linda Lee Kimble BUSINESS MANAGER Larry Daughdrill Foreword That Wonderful Year To many of the citizens of the surrounding area Southwest may be only a junior college at Summit, Mississippi; however, to those of us here at S.M.J.C. ours is a wonderful school. The 1966-1967 session was a wonderful one for Southwest Junior College. A hot autumn came with pep rallies, football games, homecoming, and Thanks¬ giving holidays. As winter came, the weather grew colder, and students quick¬ ened their paces in eager anticipation of Christmas holidays — the calm before the storrr of semester exams. We went to basketball games and kept up with school news by reading The Pine Burr. Then came spring, and S.M.J.C. was at her peak. We were all kept busy with the Azalea Trail, final examinations, and Sophomore graduation, but not too busy to look forward to summer va¬ cation. Sophomores leave S.M.J.C. to go on to senior college, the armed forces, marriage, or a job. Others stay behind, anticipating the next year when they will be sophomores. To those leaving, may the 1967 Whispering Pines serve to remind you of That Wonderful Year—1967. To those who will be here next year, may the 1967 Whispering Pines inspire you to even greater heights in the future. I am not a teacher! only a fellow-traveller of whom you asked the way. I pointed ahead—ahead of myself as well as of you ' —Shaw. . Miss j t . College Liwafl Dedication His Life—“One grand, sweet song. Charles Kingsley Wit, enthusiasm, determination— these are the qualities that characterize the one to whom the 1967 Whispering Pines is dedicated. With his friendly manner and interest in young people, he has endeared himself to the students, at the same time commanding their respect. He was Southwest ' s first band director, having formed a band when he was a student here. Now a retired Marine, he works tirelessly with a small group to produce a band of which we can all be proud. For your patience, sincerity, and hard work, we proudly dedicate the 1967 Whispering Pines to you, Mr. Stephen A. Jones 4 MR. STEPHEN A. Our B.S.U. has placed most of its em¬ phasis on Missions. The students adopted two children from the Baptist Children ' s Village. Debbie and Butch were on our campus for the Christmas party. One of the most inspirational weeks we have ever experienced was Religious Emphasis Week. Rev. Don Callaway of the Shady Grove Baptist Church of Hartselle, Alabama was our speaker. The theme was In All Thy Ways. At the end of the week we had sixty-four rededications and six professions of faith. B.S.U. Booth Pool, Miss Redford, and Rev. Jennings Poole. 70 Westminster Fellowship Emphasizes Service to Others Row 1: Linda Lee Kimble, Margaret Yllander, Pat Hughes, Vesta Welch. Row 2: Jerry Quin, Jim Davidson, Susan Price, Mrs. Mildred Craig. Row 3: Greg Yoes, Henry Poole, Julian Robinson, Rev. John L. Stuart. This year ' s Westminster Fellowship has proved to be a growing organization. Un¬ der the guidance of Mrs. Mildred Craig and Rev. John L. Stuart, the group enjoys meeting once a week at the Presbyterian Church of Summit. To make their ideal of service a re¬ ality, Westminster members adopted the project of helping the students in the Sum¬ mit Elementary Schools. Once a week each Westminster member visits his student at the school to aid the student in his school work, with social problems, or perhaps for just a friendly visit. This worthy service project has proved valuable to Westminster members as well as to the Summit School children. The Newman Club Under the capable sponsorship of Mrs. Louise Edwards, the Newman Club meets every Thursday night on campus. The purpose of the Newman Club is to bring the Catholic students closer to God. Frequent programs throughout the year are discussions of the Catholic faith and the manner in which it can become more real to students. Also, club members enjoy various Bible studies which give insight to life. Officers: Don Gautreaux, President; Martha Carol Johnson, Treasurer; Frank Galafaro, Reporter. This year ' s Whispering Pines staff spent a busy year planning and scheming to bring to the student body the best annual in the history of Southwest. It all began in August with the sale of ads. Larry Daughdrill, our business manager used his sales pitch to boost funds for the annual. Both students and faculty were most cooperative throughout the year. Without this, our annual could not have been a success. This year ' s staff was the largest ever. Every member did his part to help create an annual with a distinc¬ tive air. After all our work, we the Whis¬ pering Pines staff, hope you enjoy your annual. Glenn Whitman spends free hours in the dark room developing for the paper and the annual. 79 Success Follows the Something we can all be proud of—the Southwest Show Band. Our director, Mr. Steven A. Jones. 80 Southwest Show Band The Southwest Band indeed had a good year. It began with a flash of color as the majorettes got striking new uniforms and the Ladies in Red made their first appearance. Success followed the marching band to Gloster where they received the best bartd award in the Christmas parade. However, the greatest thrills occurred when the Southwest Show Band entered the Mobile Jazz Festi¬ val ' . Musical numbers were selected, taped, and sent off to be judged. Southwest was honored to be one of the six schools selected to attend. Of course, money was a problem, but Mr. Jones went to work and pre¬ pared a Musical Extravaganza which paid the stu¬ dents way to Mobile. Certainly, this proved to be one of the most suc¬ cessful years of the S.M.J.C. Band. It takes practice to make a good marching band, too. A few pointers never hurt anyone. Sponsored by Mrs. Louise Edwards, the cheerleaders brought the student body many novel ideas which helped make school spirit soar—and soar it did! For the first time in many years at South¬ west officials had to ask the students to be quiet during a game. Being a cheerleader is more than a part- time job. It is a full-time job requiring effort, planning, and physical stamina. Certainly we at S.M.J.C. were fortunate to have selected such good ones. August of ' 66 brought to S.M.J.C. the largest Freshman Class in the history of the school. Composing over half the student body, these enthusiastic Fresh¬ men soon made themselves an active part of our campus. Under the capable leadership of class President Sambo Moore, the new students enjoyed explor¬ ing the realm of college life together. Certainly Southwest can look forward to greater things and another suc¬ cessful year when this year ' s green Freshmen become our dignified Sopho¬ mores. 92 Athletics Wl ss- It. eott®g« Ubrair sums, tlBSiSSW A Tough Sport Requires Determined Men GRIDIRON 66 Long touchdown passes, the Head Hunters and the first annual Misssisippi Junior College All- Star Game dominated the S.M.J.C. scene in 66. The Bear victories were over: Itawamba, P.R.C., Co-Lin, East Mississippi, and Jones. 1966 marked the third consecutive victory over arch rival Co-Lin. Coaches Joe Jordon, in his first year at S.M.J.C., and Jerry Reid, who took over as head coach for the first time this year, were responsible for directing the Bears to their fine season. Thanks must go to the cheerleaders and the en¬ tire student body for their part in the ' ' Gridiron 66 at S.M.J.C. They helped much in keeping spirit on the squad at its peak. Quarterback Dan Brewer and split end Harry Young rode their fabulous pass-catch combination into coveted berths on the Mississippi Junior College All-State Team.
