r m Pa n Teaching Learning Leading 2 « Playing 3 FOREWORD The Whispering Pines opens. Our trail stretches ahead. We look backward and see the winding road thct has brought us here. We look forward toward a limitless future waiting just around the bend. Gratefully we remember those who first tread Southwest ' s path. They established her traditions and blazed the trail for us. Humbly we pick up our packs and walk purposely onward. There is much that still must be done, and the trail is beckoning. 4 DEDICATION Mr. C. R. Breeland is irreputably acknowledged as the firm backbone on which our school stands. His many abilities are seen in his uncomplaining efforts in backing every phase of Southwest activities. He is well-known by every student for not only his guidance and counseling, but also his teaching ability in the History and Biology departments. Mr. Breeland ' s unselfish per¬ sonality ' s first concern is for the student ' s needs. Many admirable traits make this man a truly outstanding person on our S.M.J.C. campus. For his never-ending efforts in helping build a greater Southwest, for his competent efficiency as college registrar, for his double role as history and biology professor, and for his versatility and lasting inspiration, we proudly dedicate this 1965-66 edition of the Whispering Pines to Mr. C. R. Breeland. —Staff 5 P. „: HI :: The Sophomore Class of 1966 Southwest Mississippi Junior College Summit, Mississippi Dear Sophomores: You have been at Southwest during a period that has established a record of the highest enrollment during the history of Southwest Mississippi Junior Col¬ lege. You have been a most important part of our program. When you leave this institution, we wish for you the most of all good things in life, and may your aspirations be filled with industry. Without industry, ambi¬ tion can only lead to disquieted dreaming. May all of you continue to be loyal to those programs that will make a better citizen of the individual. In academic work Donald has excelled just as he has in athletics and leadership. For two years he has been a valued member of the football team, being chosen as the most valuable player and a member of the All-State team during his Sophomore year. As president of the Sophomore class, Donald serves on the Student Government Association. He is a member of the B.S.U. and was voted most intellectual boy in Who ' s Who elections. Versatility and leadership earn Donald a place of honor at SMJC. 62 Ability and intellect gives Donna Ginn her place in the Ha,II of Fame. Donna ' s dependability and willingness to do for others finds her always at work. A Dean ' s List Student, Donna has been an active member of the Baptist Student Union, serving as music chairman and pianist for the B.S.U. choir. She is clso a member and officer of the Women ' s Recreational Association. We congratulate Donna on her well deserved honor. 63 High ideals and high scholastic records merit Mary Jo Nettles a place in the Hall of Fame. Because of her intellectual abilities and diligent work, Mary Jo has been an honor roll student during both her years at Southwest. She has been a faithful member of the Baptist Student Union and of the Dormettes Club. Because she has given Southwest her best, Mary Jo has been chosen for the 1965-66 Hall of Fame. 64 A high scholastic record, a competent athlete, a charming humor, and faithful school spirit could describe only one person — Jesse Tabor. Jesse has contributed a great deal of time and work throughout his past two years at SMJC to both his studies and basketball. Jesse ' s quick wit and constant depend¬ ability make him a favorite of every student on campus. For his dedication to Southwest and its activities Jesse Tabor merits honor. 65 Billie Jane Wilson earns her Hall of Fame honor through her versatility and campus leadership. Her academic excellence places her on the honor roll every six weeks. Billie Jane has served as vice-president of the Dormettes, a member of the debate team, B.S.U., and WHISPERING PINES staff. She was chosen as a member of the Who ' s Who and led school spirit as a Southwest cheerleader. During her Sophomore year Billie Jane served faithfully as the secretary of the Student Government. Because of her scholarship, school spirit, devotion to duty and Christian influences SMJC is happy to honor Billie Jane Wilson.
