Jr. CoHege Summit, 2 Southwest Miss. It. Cortege ti Summit, Uigrig ij Qi Foreword Only the person who is attending or has attended SMJC knows the feeling of love and loyalty a student here has for his school. We are proud of SMJC. We are proud of her high standards, her acade¬ mic achievements, and her athletic honors. Together in the classroom we bow our heads to pray realizing that we are truly blessed in having such a splendid junior college school system. The 1964 Whispering Pine attempts to capture in words and pictures one year of our love and loyalty, striving to illustrate the ideals and traditions which gives the pattern of Southwest its strength and quality. We hope that you enjoy this review of 1963-64, and in the years to come if you chance to dust off your Whispering Pines and thumb, through its pages, it will serve to recall memories of lasting friendships iqcicja nts, which added interest and pleasure to your undergraduat°4 3 Our President Mr. H. T. Huddleston, our President, is known by all as a capable ad¬ ministrator and loyal friend. Besides his many set duties, he finds time to pep up pep sessions, speak at assemblies, attend sporting events, and co¬ ordinate the school ' s activities. President Huddleston, a native of Fayetteville, Arkansas, received his B. A. degree from Arkansas College and his M. A. degree from the University of Arkansas. 4 Southwest Mississippi Junior College Summit, Mississippi OFFICE OF PRESIDENT To the Sophomore Class of 19 64 Southwest Mississippi Junior College Summit, Mississippi Dear friends: In your time at Southwest, I hope you have learned a few of the basic principles in the Art of success¬ ful living. Many people become so engrossed in ma¬ terial things that they forget to give thought as to how to live. You cannot take yourself out of the present by switch- ing your attention to what may happen to-morrow. You are in the present whether you like it or not. There is just one thing you can take with you into the future and that is the knowledge of how to live. You can win that only by living in the real world of every day. Wishing for each of you the most of success in your future endeavors , I am 5 Dedication As librarian of Southwest Mississippi Junior College, Mrs. Verna Martin has been a leader in her field of work. Faithfully maintaining in the library the high¬ est standards of scholarship, she leads rather than drives students to serious thought and study. In addition to her fidelity to her duties as librarian, Mrs. Martin ' s high ideals and efforts have been an inspiration to students and to all others coming under her influence. To her, as an expression of esteem and as a recognition of her valuable ser¬ vice to our junior college, this book is respectfully dedicated. These members are selected on the basis of leadership, scholarship, personality character, and school spirit. Barbara serves as treas¬ urer of the Student Government and as vice-president of the WRA. Her hobby is sports, and she is an active participant in all WRA activities. During her freshman and sophomore years, she has been elected Most Athletic Girl in the Who ' s Who Contest. Barbara is a member of the BSU and the Dormettes. An honor roll student, Barbara is a medical technology major. She will continue her college education at Millsaps. Barbara, for your worthy achievements it is with great pleasure that we give you a place in the Southwest Hall of Fame. Hall Of Fame Who better deserves a place of honor in the Hall of Fame than our Whis¬ pering Pines editor, Virginia Smith? During her freshman year, she displayed her radiant personality and enthusiastic school spirit as a cheerleader. She also played a dominant role in the play production Night Must Fall. An active member of the Baptist Student Union, Virginia was honored with the respon¬ sibility and honor of the presidency in her sophomore year. WRA secretary, a Dor- mette member, and an active member of the Student Government—these too are a part of Virginia ' s busy schedule. In addition to the many activities Virginia engages in, she has maintained a high scholastic average during her two years at SMJC. Her admirable characteristics merited her the coveted title of MISS SMJC. She was also elected Sophomore Class Favorite. For your contribution to the betterment of SMJC, Virginia, we honor you by giving you a place in the Hall of Fame. 103 Hall Of Fame Delores Kirkfield is a truly deserving member of the Hall of Fame. As President of the Student Government, Delores has adequately demonstrated her leadership ability. As editor of the Pine Burr, we see her journalism streak shining through. Although these two places of leadership take much time, she still is an active participant in the WRA. In the Baptist Student Union, she serves as Publicity Chairman. During her freshman year, she was a member of the chorus and a majorette in the band. Still, she found time to participate in Play Day. Delores 7 journalistic inclination goes hand in hand with her major for she is majoring in English. Scholastic-wise, Delores is an honor roll student. In the fall she will transfer to Millsaps to finish her preparation for a teaching career. Her activities prove her to be a versatile person, and one who deserves a place in the Hall of Fame. Hall Of Fame Bill Edmondson, a chemistry major, is another choice for the Hall of Fame. Bill, in his freshman year, displayed his leadership ability when he served as vice-president of his freshman class. This year, also, he received the honor of escorting the freshman maid at homecoming. Here at SAAJC his name always appears on the honor roll. His intellect, recognized by the stu¬ dents as well as the faculty, won him the honor of the Most Intellectual Boy in the Who ' s Who. Bill plans to continue his education at Mississippi State University. The makeup of this fine boy earns him a place in the Hall of Fame. 105 Hall Of Fame Chosen as a member of the 1963-64 Hall of Fame is Sandra Brown. Sandra, a day student is an art major. She is an active member of the Southwest art class. Her interest in the arts also extends to drama. Her dramatic ability was adequately displayed in her performance of Our Town. Sandy is a member of the Baptist Student Union, and is presently serving as Social Chair¬ man. Even with outside interests, Sandy has been an honor roll student both years at Southwest. Sandy ' s outstanding scholastic ability and varied interests have won her a place in the Hall of Fame. 106 Presenting— Queen Jeannie Cliett escorted by Mike Dwyer HOMECOMING Homecoming through the years has been a time of splendor, a time of excitement, and a time for precious memories to be formed. A pretty Queen and her escort, four lovely Maids and their escorts, a procession of shiny convertibles, and the junior college marching band were the trim¬ mings for our time of splendor. As the crown of royalty was placed on the Queen ' s head, our time of excitement arrived with another cherished SMJC tradition becoming a precious memory. 108 The 1963 Homecoming Court in full array Smiling radiantly, we see the Homecoming maids and the queen—typical Southern beauties Eg ' FRESHMAN MAID and ESCORT Barbara Sterling Cecil Hall FOOTBALL MAID and ESCORT Nell McGehee John Robson Queen Jeannie stands majestically at the center of a huge flower President H. To the staff, I say thanks for being so cooperative. Mrs. White thank you for your cooperation and helpful advice. Mr. Breeland Mr. Balser, Mr. Thomas, and Mr. Hill deserve our thanks for their photography work. We are grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Kelsey McKay for allowing us to use their lovely home for the photographing of the Who ' s Who pictures. It is my hope that in the pages of this edition of the WHISPERING PINES we have preserved some events that will bring precious memories to mind as we, in later years, again turn these pages.
