The Whispering Pines Staff has tried to capture some small event on your campus that has a special place in everyone s heart. To do The Whispering Pines justice took the co-operation and hard work of many.Among these are Ann, Jim, Oliver, Dale, Beri¬ me Lee, and the other members of my staff. In years to come, we hope that each student can take this annual, musty with age, and turn its leaves to a certain page and say, How well do I remember this day!-Dear Southwest, 111 never forget you, your ideals, or your school spirit. School spirit prevailed; it was apparent in all phases of school life. School spirit means all-out effort, both on the ath¬ letic field and the class room; school spirit means co-operation between faculty and students; school spirit means friendliness, with a cheery hello and a kind deed; school spirit means pride in our work and our school. In earnest hope it may continue to thrive on our campus, we of the annual staff dedicate the 1963 WHISPERING PINES to SCHOOL SPIRIT. Administration Faculty 12 We Search For Guidance . . . We search for truth from encounter. We pursue the ideas of others. We assimi¬ late ideas of our own. We are fresh from high school, fresh in college. We begin as Freshmen, and we grow into Sophomores. We are alone. For the first time we are thinking individually. We are encour¬ aged to react individually. We are assum¬ ing responsibility individually. We are be¬ coming ourselves. Two years we spend here—working, studying, learning—mostly happy, some¬ times sad. Two years of our lives dedicat¬ ed to education but holding many other precious accomplishments. Two years of our lives, hard earned, but well spent. Every minute event begun in the forma¬ tive years has become the soul and sub¬ stance of our college and of each student. 23 President, Ronnie Tapp; Student Government Representive, Jimmy Dale Powell Secretary and Treasury, Judy Kerr Vice President, Oliver Young (not pictured) Soph opnomore offi icers ! omore Favorites Jessie Lea Boyd Jim Patterson „ m l Z ♦«► ♦ m ? «%%%% } JwT % , r ' - • ,, §; -- 9 Adams, Len Murray — Pensacola, Fla.; Newman Club, Student Government, Sen¬ ate. Organizations 52 We become a part We become absorbed in one pace and structure of a group of individuals we come to realize our environment. We emerge from ourselves. Cooperation, progress, and new hori¬ zons are the key features of Southwest ' s campus organizations. Cooperation among the groups is evident everywhere. Progress has been the primary goal as each organi¬ zation has grown in depth and scope. New horizons are still carrying these groups forward as they seek higher and better achievements for their good and for the good of Southwest. Look ahead and be rightfully proud. Athletics 72 We Become Aware . . . Athletics of every type help every student become aware of his real role in college life. Athletics teach us to make friends—they are fun for players and spec¬ tators—they teach new skills—they empha¬ size teamwork and sportsmanship—they help develop strong and healthy bodies— they present a challenge to band mem¬ bers and cheerleaders to keep school spirit high. Players become aware that only when they think together and work to¬ gether as a team can they achieve suc¬ cess. If their efforts are met with defeat, acceptance of the challenge of winning the next time is what makes a good ath¬ lete, no matter what the outcome of the game. The general student body learns to become aware of the appropriate and healthy attitude toward competition in athletic events. This awareness will be¬ come a carry-out into every day ' s campus activities. We arrive at an appraisal of goals and their expres¬ sion in action. We learn to channel our¬ selves. Herein we honor those students whose superior qualities have merited rec¬ ognition. Jean MeMorris A t ruly deserving member in this year ' s Hall of Fame is Jean MeMorris. Being on the honor roll during both years at Southwest Jean has still found time for many outside activities. During Jean ' s Freshman year at Southwest, she was a member of the B. S. U. choir, the PINE BURR staff, and head cheerleader. In her sopho¬ more year, Jean has been head cheerleader, editor of the PINE BURR, a member of the Student Council, an active member of the Westminister Fel¬ lowship; due to her activities as cheerleader for two years, Jean was se¬ lected in the Who ' s Who as the girl having the most school spirit. Both years, Jean has been on a half-scholarship working as Mr. Huddleston ' s secretary. An English major, Jean plans to continue her education at the University of Southern Mississippi, and teach in the state ' s high schools. 88 James O’Brien Southwest ' s student librarian, James, has achieved the Hall of Fame very deservingly. James has found time in his busy schedule for the P.A.Y. and for the Vice-Presidency of the Student Government. Being a day student and a work scholarship student, James has proved his intellect by being an Honor Roll student during both years at Southwest. James ' s major is history; his minor is library science. He plans to transfer to L.S.U. and pursue a teaching career upon his graduation. 89 pa Cecile Reeves Musical, friendly, and intelligent, Cecile Reeves certainly deserves a place in the Hall of Fame. Her popularity is due in a large degree to her activities on the campus. During her Freshman year, Cecile was a mem¬ ber of the band, secretary and accompanist for the chorus, B.S.U. choir pianist, and Religious Emphasis Week pianist. In her sophomore year, Cecile was again a member of the band, librarian and accompanist for the chorus, B.S.U. music chaifman, Choir pianist, WRA secretary, Dormettes secretary, and a member of Student Government. Cecile, constantly on honor roll, is a music and Religious Education major and plans to continue her education at Delta State College. What¬ ever Cecile attempts, her personality and intelligence will make it a suc¬ cess. 90 Ted McCuiley Who deserves a place in the Hall of Fame more than the President of the Student Government, Ted McCuiley? Ted has kept his grades high and has been active in outside activi¬ ties during his stay at SMJC. He has served as 4-H President, Student Government President, Wesley Foundation President, and a member of Sigma Mu Delta. Ted was also a member of the Homecoming Court both years at Southwest. Ted ' s major is history, and upon transferring, plans to attend Millsaps College, teach for a few years, and go to Emory University to study Theology. 91 nn Features 92 We Become Aware We become aware of Southwest ' s spirit throughout every phase of college life. We recognize the Southwest way, hot only as we work and study together, but also in the social functions of the col¬ lege at all times of the year we enjoy fhe features of Southwest. MR. S.M.J.C. We are alone. For the first time we are thinking individually. We are encour¬ aged to react individually. We are as¬ suming responsibility individually. We are becoming ourselves. Two years we spend here—working, studying, learning—mostly happy, some¬ times sad. Two years of our life, dedicated to education but holding many other pre¬ cious accomplishments. Two years of our life, hard earned but well spent. Every minute event begun in the formative years has become the soul and substance of our college and of each student.
