So to you, Mrs. Mary Louise Edwards, whom we consider our friend as well as teacher, we dedicate the 1962 Whispering Pines. From The President 1962 The Sophomore Class of 1962 Southwest Mississippi Junior College Summit, Mississippi Dear Sophomores! Your completion of two years of college work is a commendable accomplishment. You have earned at least sixty-four hours of academic credit, a jEeat of considerable significance in our day of heightened standards and in¬ creased competition. The completion of degree require¬ ments is now easily within your reach; we hope that you will continue your formal education. But you have derived other benefits in these two years. We believe that you have added the dimensions of social effectiveness and athletic versatility. The years ahead should find you making adjustments more easily and spending your leisure time more pleasantly. Above all, we hope that you have deepened your vision of God and Right and that as you leave us, you will walk in the way of Spirit and Truth. Will you accept these words from Milton as our parting wish? Go now ”inflamed with the study of learning, and the admiration of virtue; stirred up with high hopes of living to be brave men, and worthy patriots, dear to God, and famous to all ages. ;l 7 1 MR. She has been Head Ma¬ jorette of the Band both her freshman and sophomore years and has played the flute for the Concert Band. Besides being on the Honor Roll, and the President of the Wesley Or¬ ganization, Jan has actively participated in the 4-H Club, the WRA, the Dormettes, the Student Government, the Pine Burr, and the Commerce Club. She is also this year ' s most versatile girl in the Who ' s Who section of the annual. Next year, Jan plans to go to Millsaps where she will major in Religious Education. It is easy to see that she will go far in this field because of the fine Christian leader¬ ship she has shown here at SMJC. 90 O O CN Claude Johnson Who deserves a better place in our Hall of Fame than our own Pine Burr Editor? Claude will long be remembered here for his fine columns and stirring editorials. Besides his fine journalistic work, he has also managed to maintain a high scholastic average. Claude is majoring in Journalism and plans to attend Mississippi Southern next year. Upon graduation, he hopes to become a free lance-writer, or go into the newspaper field. Whatever he decides to do, we would all like to wish him the best of luck. Q1 Julia Terrell Sweet, friendly, and intelligent. These are the qualities that helped Judy achieve the Hall of Fame. Judy has been very popular during her two years at Southwest, and this year she was the Student Body Maid in the Homecoming Court. Judy is also the Presi¬ dent of the Dormettes, Treasurer of the Student Council, Secretary of the Wesley Organi¬ zation, and Secretary-Treasurer for the Sophomore Class. She is majoring in General Science and plans possibly to go to Southwestern Loui¬ siana College next year. Wherever Judy goes, we know that her charm and intelligence will take her to the top. 92 I0 0 0 Butch Butcher Butch has spent two busy years at Southwest studying hard and being a friend to everyone. His winning smile, sincerity, loyalty, and dependability all helped to make him a H all of F amer He was an ardent Bear supporter this year backing both the football and basketball teams win or lose. Being sports-minded, he participated in in- tra-mural basketball with his usual vigor and enthusiasm. Next year. Butch plans to go to Mississippi State where he will major in business We know that success will go with him. 93 c I u b s A n d O r g a n I z a t • i o n s 1962 Row 1: Becky Thompson, Colette Sartin, Joanna Murphy, Peggy Blount, Peggy Whittington, Carol Dutiaway, Joyce Sterling, Shirley Cupit, Mary Nell Pigot Row 2: Willa Jean Jemigan, Jetty Ruth Williams, Mickey Shu- make, Lynda Hart, Peggy Montgomery, Barbara Till Annual Staff 19 62 Editor . . .
