JLv, 30 )0w hruul S £ Uw. 3Y7 . he Whispering Pines Staff Presents The 1961 Whispering Pines Teachers prepare schedules for coming year 1961 Whispering Pines School began on August 31, 1960 this year. Sum¬ mer had ended for teachers and students alike. The excitement and confusion was no different from the years gone by . And many a sophomore was stopped and asked directions by an excited freshmcrh. We sat in the first assembly and waved to old friends and looked for new ones. Opening exercises were begun and we listened with the realization that school had begun. Cheerleaders were elected that day because of our first ballgame a scarce two weeks a- way. The first few days were hectic ones. The change of schedules and the crys of many students who couldn ' t take chemistry and still eat breakfast in the den were heard. But as our first week progressed these com¬ plaints died down. During the second week they were replaced by Beat Itawamba. Our newly elected cheerleaders be¬ gan preparing for the first ballgame of the season. Students get 1 I The bleachers roared when the bears took the field and school spirit ran High, but luck wasn ' t with us and a heartbreaking tie of 0-0 was the final outcome of the game. Yes, school had really begun, and with it the backing qf Our bears . Whether it was on the football field, in our class¬ rooms, or elsewhere, we lived for the Rah Bears And S.MJ.C. was our home.. The hard fighting bears took to the road followed by cars and the old bus full of students. And al¬ though the spirit was high and loud and the girls came home sounding like fog horns, injuries took their toll and the crippled bears lost to Pearl River 38-0, and Hinds 40-15. Nevertheless you can ' t keep a good team down and we still backed our team and prepared for the Homecoming festivities to be held on October 22. i Cheerleaders help keep the spirit high Freshmen admire one another A break in the homecoming plans came on September 30, at 4:00 a.m. and time for Freshman Day at S.MJ.C. Getting up at :00 a.m. is bad enough but sub¬ mitting to shoe polish, white wash, lipstick and in¬ side out clothes is worse. Ask any freshman. First on the schedule was a parade down to President Huddleston ' s home to sing the Alma Mater. Everyone enjoyed this immensely, especially the Hud¬ dlestons. The spirit was so high that the freshmen were asked to sing for several of the other teachers. Next the bedecked freshmen were taken to the tennis court to play a stimulating game called Drop the Pillow. After this strenuous game the freshmen were herded into the cafeteria where they waited (last in line of course) patiently for breakfast. But alas, who can eat standing up equipped with only a knife and interrupted at timely intervals by the call of air raid. So the famished freshmen left the cafeteria only slightly fuller than they came in. Classes still began at 8:00 but ran on a short¬ ened schedule for the long awaited assembly at 9:40. Assembly was decorative and amusing, we had, tire rolling, weightlifting, yodeling, piano play¬ ing and a lovely aria by J. L. Pass. The assembly ended with yells rendered by some freshmen appointed cheerleaders and a wait till next year attitude. Homecoming activities forgotten for freshman day were soon remembered as we held our 42nd Annual Homecoming on October 22, 1960. Activities began with an open house of both dormitories. Long awaited by the students at S.M.J.C. Girls went through the boys dormitory and vice versa. At 2:00 p. m. we held our homecom¬ ing parade through McComb and Sum¬ mit. We honored our lovely queen and court during this parade. Liberty and Gloster bands both came to make our day a success. An alumni banquet was held at 6:00 p. m. and the alumnus was invited as well as the Sophomores. However we could hardly sit still as we waited for 7:30 p. m. The evening activities finally got un¬ derway with a special pre-game perfor¬ mance by the S.M.J.C., Gloster and Liberty High School bands. And at 8:00 p. m. the game started with the Holmes Bulldogs. The celebration was climaxed by the coronation ceremonies at half time where Robbie Clark was crowned queen. But the day isn ' t over as we go to the barn for our homecoming dance. 5 The barn was decorated, the girls were beautiful, and the boys were handsome. Darry, what is a Beatnik? Prexy welcomes Saint Nick to campus. Butch are you really bowlegged? loween, and for Halloween the B.S.U. sponsored by Rodney Ellis gave a Beatnik play in the barn for all students. Games were played and refreshments were served to a big crowd. Awards were given the Beatnikest Beatnik. And local talent was exploited. November came and went and after the Thanks¬ giving holidays we began to look forward to Christ¬ mas and Santa Claus. Jerry Simmons buys a coke from Joe Barnett, our notorious concessions stand keeper. Christmas comes and goes and semester exams are faced and grades are distributed, as Southwest again resumes its calm air. Chemistry students plod on as well as others. Courses are started and then dropped but a new sensation is in the air. Basketball season is in full swing and the Bears pile up a tremendous record of 18 conference wins and two losses. Yes the fans are jubilant and Coach Holmes is mighty proud. But. Mr. Bryan, I always set my apparatus up this way. Spring is coming. Just ask Phyllis and Bud. Even peaches senses something amiss. Spring fever hits bear too, you know. Willis Smith seems to be enjoying the weather or is it the pretty photographer? Spring has nothing to do with the antics in the girls dorm. How does it feel on bottom Pat? Yes, warm weather is on its way and with it many more of our school activities. The Valentine Dance is held and the Speech Departments hold a contest. The Hall of Fame is chosen, and at long last the boys begin to take notice of the girls. The trees are beginning to have more foilage and classes relax. Why even Mrs. Edwards lets us out early. Rods and reels are brought out and once again the answer to that de¬ ba table question of whether there are fish in that lake is sought. Queen Pat and her lovely court relax at Nancy Lamb’s house before Valentine Dance on the fourteenth. February 14, 1961 and we had our Valentine Dance. For the first time in history the dance was held in the old library. Immediately after the basketball game with Co- Lin (which we won) the girls rushed to the dormi¬ tory to donn the formals for the big affair. The decorations were beautiful as usual and after the coronation, the floor was filled with happy dancing couples. It was all over too quick, but a good time was had by all. Joyce and Cynthia won events in the speech contest. School progresses and already the year is three fourths over. The dedication of the new Simmons Library is behind us and so is the Southern Regional Debate Tourna¬ ment, held here this year. Miss Hay has much to be proud of with her students scor¬ ing 12 points and winning over Jones, Hinds, and Pearl River. Our Debate team was victor¬ ious and first places were cap¬ tured in dramatic interpretation and oral reading. Second places were won in after dinner speak¬ ing, extemporaneous speaking, and original oratory. We always knew Southwest could out talk anybody anywhere. We enjoyed our Mississippi Assembly programs An attentive audience listens to a convincing speaker. i i ■vm- ? 1 : I Football players always come in hungry after practice. Spring practice started in February and many boys are limping to class. Of course we can offer no consolation except to remind them it only lasts for six weeks. However don ' t say that to any of them. Religious Emphasis Week was held during the beginning of March. Rev. Hurt was enjoyed by all. His drawing and jokes will long be re¬ membered. The girls got an extra treat when Mrs. Sue Horton visited the dormitory and gave talks on Christian marriage. She appeared also in assembly to talk to mixed groups. Couples dot the campus everywhere and its always nice to see such a de¬ voted couple as this one. Yes, Billy Joe has time to squeeze Joyce in between calculus, physics and organic chemistry. Harry seems to be quite a man about campus. Here Bobby Nell and Peggy are both extracting attention. Tell me Harry is it you or that red Ford behind you. And we will always remember the lobby and the television set. Guess well have to give that chair to Holyene and Pat cause they seem to have squatters rights. Wonder what Peggy said to make Alyne laugh? The Den figures highly in many ac- tivites whether its a ping-pong tournament or a get acquainted session for new stu¬ dents. Students find here a recluse between classes where they can listen to the juke box and have a coke or discuss a test in typing. Supplies, both school and personal, may be purchased and always on Wed¬ nesdays we can pick up our laundry. Yes, the den plays a big part in the school day. Mr. Bryan hurries to lunch Front view of the boys’ dormitory. The school year is nearly over but it has been an extremely pleasant one. And one which will have many memories for each and every¬ one of you. Graduation is not far off. For the Sopho¬ more that means a senior college, getting mar¬ ried or a job. For the Freshman it means being Sophomore next year and in charge of Fresh¬ man day. Many things will be forgotten but many more remembered. Geraldine, don’t you ever study? Patsy’s fussing again, poor guy. Mr. Huddleston’s got a new car, not really, just one he borrowed for the parade. Mrs. Mary Cain sits with the Simmons brothers, after whom the library is named. Winners of our who ' s who pose for this group picture. Brenda reason mate Felder cleans up room. The is she has a messy room Darryl Stuart carefully weighs ma¬ terial for chemistry class. The year is finished. But memories will stick with us whether we are here next year or not. We do not cease to be S.M.J.C. students when we leave, but merely transfer from the student body to the alumni. The dormitory and the class¬ rooms will remain dear to us through life. A Southwest graduation symbolizes a step in our adult life, made hap¬ pier and profitable by our years at S.M.J.C. Dedication To Coach Horace Holmes for above par performance in the roles of teacher, friend, counselor, mentor, or executive, we dedicate the 1961 Whispering Pines in total appreciation for what you ' ve done. Upon the education of the people of this country, the fate of this country depends. House of Commons, June 15, 1874 From the President The Sophomore Class of 1961 Southwest Mississippi Junior College Summit, Mississippi Dear Friends: You are completing two years of college work in a period of the history of our country when each year of college work really counts. We, at Southwest, hope that you will continue to further your education. By so doing, you can ren¬ der a greater service for God, for your country, and for yourself and the community in which you will reside. There are many frontiers that are still unconquer¬ ed. During her two years here, Martha New¬ man has received many honors. She is presi¬ dent of the W.R.A. and very active as social chairman in the B.S.U. She belongs to the Dor- mettes, and the F.T.A. We have all appreciated Martha because she is always willing to help. After graduation, Martha plans on going to Delta State where she will jbursue her degree in elementary education. Right behind her sister and no less popular is Linda Newman. Linda has also been the recipitent of many honors this year. She was a member of the Valentine and Homecoming Courts and chosen by her classmates as Sopho¬ more favorite. Linda is active in the Dormettes, and F.T.A. of which she is Vice President, and also helps her sister as the Chairman of the B.S.U. Social Committee. She is also active in sports and is a member of the W.R.A. She also plans upon attending Delta State after graduation where she will continue her elementary education work. And we all say good luck Linda. Hall of Fame Maintaining a high scholastic average has placed Robbie Clark in the Hall of Fame. Not only is Robbie on the honor roll but her class¬ mates elected her queen of the Homecoming Activities and maid in the Valentine Court. Being president of Wesley keeps Robbie busy but she is still in the Dormettes, W.R.A., and the tennis team, where last year she was a member of the state doubles winner. Robbie plans to go to Millsaps and finish her degree in education. Another high scholastic standing student is Barbara Netterville. Her name is a sure thing on the Honor Roll each six weeks. Being a day student hasn ' t stopped Bar¬ bara ' s activities. She is President of the F.T.A., and very active on the annual where she is business manager. And we have her to thank for the ads in our annual this year. She plans upon attending Mississippi Southern to continue her education and we know she ' ll succeed. Hall of Fame Our only boy appointee is Wayne Sterling. Wayne is another sure thing on the Honor Roll. His high scholastic standing and his ability to argue you out of anything has won Wayne his place in the Hall of Fame. Elected to the Who ' s Who this year as the most intelligent, Wayne was honored by his classmates. He is very active in speech work and is a member of the debate team that won the Speech Contest held here. He also has a part in the Dramatic Clubs production this year. To Mrs. Julia Blount, Mrs. Louise Felder, and Mrs. Peggy Lambert as well as the editors and staff of the Enterprise-Journal for your very capable pro¬ fessional assistance in assembling this book in its final form. And to you Mr. Balser, many, many thanks, for without you this annual wouldn ' t be. I only hope you have a little patience left for next years editor. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lamb.for the use of your lovely home for our Who ' s Who pictures, I wish to express my deep appreciation. Last, but surely not least I wish to thank the student body for their co¬ operation in the annual sponsored activities and their willingness to help when¬ ever they could.
