The whole object of education is, or should be, to develop mind. The mind should be a thing that works. It should be able to pass judgement on events as they arise, make decisions. —Sherwood Anderson IN MEMORIAM MISS VIVIAN ASTON Well, it is earth with me; silence resumes her reign: I will be patient and proud, and soberly acquiesce. Give me the keys. I feel for the common chord again. Sliding by semitones, till I sink to the minor,—yes. And I blunt it into a ninth, and I stand on alien ground. Surveying awhile the heights I rolled from into the deep; Which, hark, I have dared and done, for my resting place is found. Back of this progress are students who contribute daily to the advancement of our school and its principles. Every student, in some way, con¬ tributes to the forward march of Southwest. On the following pages are pictured four students, who while maintaining a high scholastic average have contributed much to¬ ward the advancement of our school. These students typify all Southwest Mississippi Junior College students. Charles Osborne Charles Osborne, Student Body President, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. F. C. Osborne, Montgomery, Alabama. He is a political science-law major. While he tends to the af¬ fairs of the student government, Charles can be seen moving about the campus help¬ ing with the activities of the Southwest Players, Band, Math Club, WHISPERING PINES, and the Southwest orchestra. Charles will leave Southwest this spring and will en¬ roll at the University of Alabama where he will contniue his law studies. Hattie Nunnery Hattie Pearl Nunnery, the 20 years old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Reese Nunnery, Liberty, Mississippi is a business education major. While maintaining a very high scho¬ lastic average, Hattie is very loyal to her Alma Mart er and supports it in many ways. She is active in the Baptist Student Union, Women ' s Recreation Association, Opera So¬ ciety, Dormettes, Chorus, Commerce Club, and Southwest Players. It is always nice to see Hattie because she has a grand smile for everyone. Wilmon Rushing Wilmon Rushing, 20 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Rushing of Tylertown, Mississip¬ pi has selected social studies as his major. He is active in many phases of student ac¬ tivities. He is a member of the Baptist Stu¬ dent Union, Pine Burr Staff, Basketball team, and the Baseball team. He was chosen by the student body as a member of the 1960 Valentine Court.
