Southwest Mississippi Junior College SUMMIT, MISSISSIPPI O Lord, our God, it in tvlth hearts full of gratitude that we come before fljffi , today- rauluae for the many blessings which have been ours, ■ Kn For all those who have made it possible for us to come thus far. As we enter a new and greater realm of life, it is with great humility that we turn to Thee for help and guidance. Guide us. 0 God, in the way of Thy statues so that we may choose and make well of the op¬ portunities which Thou hast set forth for us in this our time. Thy hands have made ns and fashioned us. Now. may they direct us to mpve in accordance with Thy commandments. Give us insight that we may understand perplexities. Give us faith that we may dispel fear. GPive us wisdom that we may love our neighbors as ourselves. Give us will and strength that we may carry our hopes and ideals on beyond our time. In Christ ' s name we pray. Amen. DEDICATION jr. To Mrs. Neil Craig for her broad visions, her lofty ideals, and her Christian inspirations to all who know her, we gratefully dedicate this 1 959 edition of The Whispering Pines. The Vision that you have glorified in your mind, the Ideal that you have enthroned in your heart—this you have built your life by, this you have become. —Allen JERAY ANN and WELDEN In Memoriam Edward Welden Johnston Think of him faring on, as dear In the love of There as the love of Here. Dear Friends: You have been at Southwest during an important per¬ iod in the history of the school. Our football team brought to the campus the first championship in the history of the school. Our college has met the standards as set up by the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and is fully accredited by this agency. You have been a most important part in both of these attain¬ ments . Through your days ahead, continue to be loyal to those programs that are designed to make a better citizen of the individual. Continue to look . up to the space that is still unconquered and keep your eyes on the Star as its rays of brightness direct you to higher and nobler planes. The Sophomore Class of 1959 Southwest Mississippi Junior College Summit, Mississippi Dear Sophomores: My congratulations to another fine sophomore class for their contributions to the progress of our college. In spite of the confusion throughout the world, I believe our public school system is making it possible for us to enjoy our pre¬ sent freedoms. It is my belief that this college is assuming responsibility for maintaining an educated people. History offers positive proof that society, when given equal educational opportunities for all, develops democratic ideals. One of the most important of these ideals is the rec¬ ognition of the worth of an individual. My conviction is that the child is more important than the state; that institutions are made for men, rather than men for institutions. May you continue to accept the challenge of an everchang- ing society for the highest development and sincere desire to serve our world community. Sincerely, Horace Holmes s MR. H. T. JACKSON, MISS. Autographs IN APPRECIATION This the school year of 1958-59 has truly been one that will never be forgotten by students here at Southwest Mississippi Junior College. In the many years to come, it is my wish that The 1959 Whispering Pines will make vivid once more the many events of this year. Can you not still hear the music from the band at the football games with the crowd yelling, Go, Bears, go!? And they did—on to become the Mississippi Junior College Foot¬ ball Champions! Remember how proud everyone was to receive the word of our accredita¬ tion by the Southern Association to Secondary Schools and Colleges? There were classes every day to enlighten our minds, and dances to keep us in step. Then to the future, is there really oil under our beloved campus? The Rainmaker and Rebel Without a Cause show¬ ed us the talent possessed by our groups and Religious Emphasis Week was spiritually re¬ warding. To really complete everything, the basketball boys captured the Mississippi Junior College Basketball Championship! Who could ask for a better year? If you can recall the ex¬ citement, pleasure, and interest of these past days by the contents of this book, all the time spent in making it possible will have been worthwhile. There are many thanks due. First of all, to Mrs. Lindley and the staff who have worked diligently and all the others who helped when their special talent was needed. Secondly, to the faculty and students for their cooperation and patience during picture-making time. Thirdly, to the photographers, Mr. A. A. Gautreaux, Mr. Johnny Balsher, and Mr. John Wil¬ liams, who went beyond their call of duty to please. Our special appreciation is extended to Mrs. W. H. Lamb, Jr. for allowing the taking of the Who ' s Who pictures in her lovely home and to the Enterprise-Journal and Charles Magee for many of the football and basketball action shots. Lastly, to Mrs. Wallace Blount and her helpers who have guided us and been most understanding. To all of these and every person connected with Southwest, I say, Thank you, and may Southwest look to the future and continue to strive upward. Sincerely, Jo Ann Williams Editor
