V Alma Mater In Southwestern Mississippi Towering toward the sky, Proudly stands our Alma Mater As the years go by. Forward ever be our watchword; Conquer and prevail. Hail to thee our Alma Mater! All Southwest! All Hail! w Are Serious, Too, Dedication As Coach Glyn Slay prepares to end five years of service to Southwest Junior College, it is appropriate that we dedicate this annual to him as a tribute to his high purpose and sincere interest in the welfare of this college. While setting new records on the athletic field, Coach Slay has gained for Southwest recognition as an aggressive competitor in the JC conference. His professional statue has aided in bringing well-deserved honors to many outstanding players by claiming at least one place on the All-State team each year, and one year as many as three. Coach Slay gave Southwest one of Missis¬ sippi’s three All-American JC players which brought national prestige to our school. All of our fine faculty do commendable work in their departments but few have been willing to work unselfishly wherever the need appeared to aid South¬ west in the giant strides of progress she has made in the last few years. Every department on the campus has benefited in some way from his interest and efforts. He has stood firm for his convictions of what was right for Southwest often know¬ ing his position might prove unpopular. It is in appreciation of this willingness to serve Southwest outside the boun¬ daries of his own responsibilities, that this tribute is made to Coach Slay. Our President is always avail¬ able for consultation and guid¬ ance to both faculty and stu¬ dents alike. The Sophomore Class of ' 56- ' 57 Southwest Mississippi Junior College Summit, Mississippi. As you are making your contribution to our in¬ stitution through your good works and enthusiasm, you are gaining for yourselves a place in the hearts of those that will follow in your paths. I feel that you are living in the greatest age of all time. Things that seemed to be boulders in the paths of progress in years past, have now be¬ come mere pebbles. This has been accomplished by a better preparedness to meet the great problems that confront us. May you continue with your preparations to meet in a noble way the challenge of any problem of life that would tend to impede your progress. May you apply your knowledge to make the world a better place in which to live .T T Su Board of Trustees PIKE COUNTY C. A. Reeves, President_ J. S. Brumfield, Secretary H. L. Command Coach Ed Massey, Head Coach Glyn S. Slay, Coach Wesley Clark During the 1956 Football season, the Bears were forced to rest on their 1955 laurels when they set a new record for wins in the history of the school. Oddly, the 1956 won-lost record was exactly the reverse of the 1955 season. The Bears lost several games by close scores but were never embarrassed during any encounter. They completed the season with the dubious honor of being first in the Junior College league de¬ fensively. The Inside Story On Football ■ Everything always began in the dressing room as they girded for the gridiron. They all had the same gear to put on but it always took some boys longer. Caution or Vanity? They began practice with calisthenics, but there is no point in showing that since this is the way Coach Slay be¬ lieved in “practicing” football. After a turn of good practice, or maybe bad practice, they were allowed to rest as they watched their team-mates work. They seemed to take this pretty seriously. They covered many miles on the old bus. How much shorter the ride home when they had won! There were some pretty rough times during the 1956 football season, but the Bears can still smile. But the time eagerly awaited every afternoon . . . out the gate and to the cafeteria. FINIS The fans were faithful this year and sometimes treated us pretty special.
