To the taxpayers of this commonwealth we wish to say that your money will be spent to the greatest benefit of mankind and that in future years you can look upon this institution and exclaim in all truth and sincerity, I helped make it what it is, and it is mine. The Student Council The purpose of the Student Council is to promote our well-being as students, to up¬ hold the highest standards of our college, and to practice efficient student self-govern¬ ment. This purpose is accomplished through the council, made up of student body officers, the president, representatives from each class, presidents of each club, and two faculty advi¬ sors. It brings to the student the motivating power of a lifelong purpose and a nationwide outlook It is designed to develop ideals and power in the lives of its members; to enrich the spirit of college life; to advance the in¬ terests ot tne teaching profession; to pro¬ mote the welfare of the children; and to foster the education of all the people. It enables a student to have four years of pre¬ liminary preparation plus four years of def¬ inite training during college years for pro¬ fessional leadership. Officers of the F. T. It is one of the most progressive clubs on the Campus. It is composed primarily of students studying Agriculture. The Club’s main purpose is to train its members to be leaders in their field af¬ ter graduation. This organization sponsors various projects for the purpose of improving the agricul¬ ture facilities for the college. The outstanding ob¬ jective this year is to acquire an Ayrshire breed of cattle. The Home Economics Club This organization is affiliated with both state and national American Home Economics Associations. Its purpose is: (I) To promote better understanding of the American Home Economics Association and its relation¬ ships; (2) To strengthen the individual club; (3) To put home in home economics; (4) To further the profess¬ ional attitudes; and (5) To promote better public rela¬ tions. Bij The French Club, tentatively known as the Le Cerole Francois , is a group composed of students studying French culture and history. The organization has its own study and social groups. It meets twice each month, under the direction of Miss Lona Burns. i jf l (J ' u Southwest’s Initial Art Club, under the direction of Roy Schultz, Jr. with Mrs. J. E. Magee as sponsor, was formulated in 1951. This club has done much to stimulate interest in all types of creative work. The art exhibits which the club has sponsored have accomplished much in this direction. Several members of this club are affiliated with the New Orleans Art Association. The Art Club has contributed several paintings for exhibition at the Issac Del¬ gado Museum of New Orleans, Louisiana and at the Municipal Art Gallery in Jackson, Mississippi. The Treble Clef This club is under the supervision of Miss Vivian Aston, piano and voice instructor. Its objectives are to enrich the social and cultural as well as musical life of the students. One main feature is to attendsome renowned musical event each year. This season the members of the club plan to attend the operetta Faust in New Orleans at the Municipal Auditorium. The trip also includes an all-day sight-seeing tour of the Crescent city. C. dance orchestra, organized at the beginning of the academic year, have contributed much to the student life at southwest Mississippi Junior College. It plays for dances of all kinds at S. M. J. C. and off the campus as well as for banquets, civic clubs and high school assemblies. This organization will be enlarged the second sem¬ ester to a total of fifteen members. Edward Yarborough was reorganized in September I952 and added much to the fighting spirit of the BEARS during the football and bas¬ ketball seasons. The forty-four piece marching band turned to con¬ cert work the second semester and enjoyed several nice trips and at the same time promoted the wholesome spirit of S.M.J.C. Membership in the S.M.J.C; Band is open to those men and women who are interested and qualified in carrying on their musical abili¬ ties . Its purpose is to promote recreational activities on the campus. One of its main functions is spon¬ soring the intramural sport program, offering competition in all sports. This program is conducted on a year-round basis between the freshman and sophomore class. Annual awards are presented to the winning team and to outstanding individual participants. W.R.A.
