WHISPERING PINES To record in detail every activity at Southwest would indeed be a great task. However, we have tried to mirror for you the happy year of 1946-47, the people with whom you associated, the activities of which you were a part, and the scenes you helped make complete. May there abide with you always the pleasant memories, the inspiring spirit of Southwest. S.M.J.C. Once again our youth can look forward to the opportunities for education, and there¬ after for engaging in whatever productive kinds of labor they may choose, unhampered by any restrictions except those imposed by democratic pro¬ cesses. Once again our nation has emerged victor from a struggle in which the enemy would destroy our form of government, our freedom and even our way of life. This victory was won in the main by the young men of our country, many of whom lost their lives in winning this victory. As we take up again the duties and responsibilities and the rights of a free people let us steadfastly determine that those who gave their last full measure of devotion shall not have done so in vain. To you, the youth of today, I wish to say, full speed ahead, and blast your obstacles out of the way. t 16 S.M.J.C. WHISPERING PINES CLASSES 17 STUDENT BODY Paul Dixon_ President Jessie D. Second Row: Harold Gordon, Halbert Sawyer, Paul Blair (Coach), Donald Williams, John White, Aubrey McMillian. The Boys ' Basketball Team had a most successful year. They played sixteen games and lost only six and won ten. They won the first five games played at home and then they journeyed to Decatur where they lost their first game of the season by two points. I am sure that everyone who attended the games enjoyed the team in action. S.M.J.C. WHISPERING PINES i GIRLS BASKETBALL GIRLS ' BASKETBALL TEAM First Row, left to right: Nancy Westbrook, Helen Nunnery, Betty Burris, Jessie Davis Holmes, j Margaret Simmons, Audrey Thornton. Second Row: Margie Lawrence, Helen Wood, Irma Campbell, Sarah Fortenberry, Lesine Stension, Virginia Dale Rawls. The Girls ' Basketball Team had a fair season. They had a lot of tough breaks but they pulled through the season with five wins and five losses. Two of the girls had operations and were not able to play ball for the season. With all this tough luck, they played good ball and we enjoyed every game. 38 S.M.J.C. WHISPERING PINES i SOUTHWEST BOXERS First Row, left to right: Halbert Morris, Manuel O ' Cana, Gonzalo Hernandez, Pio Porter. Second Row: Jack King, Everett Moss, Douglas Brown, William Powell, Obie Brown, Marlin Holman, Jim Shannon (Coach). This year is the first year Southwest has had a Baseball Team since before the war. The team was very successful because they only lost six games the whole season. Every game they had plenty of backing and every one turned out for the games. The games were enjoyed by everyone and we can ' t wait until baseball season next year. 41 S.MJ.C. WHISPERING PINES 1 HOMECOMING 42 HH S.M.J.C. WHISPERING PINES S.M.J.C WHISPERING PINES MR.
