May there abide with you al¬ ways the pleasant memories, the en¬ during friendships, and the inspiring spirit of Southwest. ' DEDICATION MR. SHELDON A. DUNAWAY To him whose words are ever filled with cheer, whose optimism brightens our every day, whose friendship is shared by all alike to “Shelly”—we lovingly dedicate the 1941 edition cf The Whispering Pines. u r GILLIS HALL o TRUSTEES PIKE COUNTY W. KENNA, President To Southwest Friends Greetings, These are troublesome times. It is such a pity, such a tragedy, that so much ma¬ terial wealth, and so much irreplaceable values in human lives are being hopelessly destroyed in and by means of war. The only consoling thought is that there are some things more precious than wealth, than life even. Our way of life, our free¬ dom, our ideals, our institutions are a trust handed down tc us by our forebears who purchased these things with their blood, their t ears, their suffering, and we, their ancestors, will not measure up to this trust, unless we preserve our inheritance at all costs. Let there be no question— American manhcod and womanhood will forever be worthy of this trust. Our schools are American and will carry forward Amer¬ ican ideals to future generations. Southwest will hold high the torch of freedom, along with other American institutions. Youth of America, I Salute You. IX MISS ANABEL COX B. S. Tennessee State Teachers College M. A. The team got off to a good start with the boys showing fine team spirit and a grim determination to win. They kept this fighting spirit throughout the season, and although they did not win a majority of the games, they gave a good account of themselves in every battle. The greatest thrills of the season came in the games with Southeastern, Scooba and Decatur. The game with Southeastern was played on a mud-soaked field. The Pilots had victory snatched from then only in the last few minutes of the game. The Scooba game was characterized by superb running on the part of the Pilots, making the game more one-sided than the 19-12 victory indicates. The Decatur homecoming day furnished a chance for the Southwest team to get revenge for the defeat on their own home-coming day the previous year. The Pilots scored twice in the third quarter and triumphed with a 14-6 victory. The fine showing made by this year ' s team may be attributed to their “all for one, one for all” cooperation and their “never say die” spirit. 5 CLUB George Birdsong, Wally Camp, Claude Campbell, Harold Cowart, Gentry Dowland, Bob Hach, secretary and treasurer; Walter Huffman, Henry Lee Laird, Golman Lee, Ernest Lockett, vice president; David Moak, Jack Ncechel, president; Randolph Nunnery, M. ABERNATHY BOBBIE GERALD WILSON CARROLL COTTEN LILLIAN DILLON Opening the season with the strong Ellisville team, the Pilot basketeers got off to a good start by coming back the second night to win 37-35 after losing the first encounter by several points. Then followed games with Goodman, Wesson, Poplarville, in which the opposition proved too experienced for the Pilots. In the late season two thrillers were won from Poplarville when Huffman scored the winning points in the last minute of play, and a fast game from Ray¬ mond in which all members of the team scored freely. Prestridge, Huffman, Roberts, Blackwell and Singleton scored most consist¬ ently for the Pilots. Dowland, Blackwell, Huffman, Prestridge were back from last season’s squad and were depended on for a great share of the duties. Roberts, Whittington, Sin¬ gleton, Rials, Burris and DeCoux made good showings as first year men and are counted on to be the nucleus of a much better team next season. Back row: Norwood Prestridge, Frank Singleton, Charles Rials, La Rue Blackwell. Front row: Coach Henson, George DeCoux, Gentry Dowland, Kenneth Roberts, Hen¬ ry Lee Laird—Manager. BOYS’ BASKETBALL GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Without a single regular from last year’s team and with only three players that had any experience last year, the girls’ basketball team made an excellent record. In conference play, the team won nine games, lost seven and tied one. Four of the games lest were to the strong Goodman championship team. The other three lost were to Ellisville which also had a very strong team. The team ranked fourth in Conference standing which is a very fine showing, considering the number of stronger teams. The girls played Ellisville in the first game of the state tournament and were eliminated 27 to 20 after a hard fought game. Southwest was leading at the half, but Ellisville overcame this lead in the second half to eliminate our team. Fitzgerald, Prestridge, and Dickson were the highest scorers. Felder, Forten¬ berry, Dillon, and Thornhill did fine work at the guard positions while a number of others made fine progress in their first year. The team has the distinction of being the last team to represent Southwest in inter-school girls’ basketball as the conference voted this year to eliminate this sport. Through his untiring efforts, Mr. Goodwin added constantly to this number throughout the football season. In the fall, the band played for all home football games and accompanied the football team on several trips away from home. The band was also seen on nearby fairgrounds during the fall. When basketball season came on, the band proved to be a great support to the teams. The band also played for the high school tournaments held in the College gymnasium. It was thought at first that the band would be merely a marching band, as the experience and knowledge re¬ quired for a concert band were lacking. But soon after football season, the band appeared in a Sunday afternoon concert. Thereafter, concerts were given on the average of one each six weeks throughout the year. These concerts were a great success and created much enthusiasm on the campus and in town. The band made several tours of Southwestern Mississippi and has become well known for the musicianship and showmanship of its members. The climax of the season’s work came at the music festival held in Jackson on April 12, when the band received rating with some of the best junior college bands in the state. Much of the success of the band may be given to the application of informa¬ tion learned in the theory and harmony classes which were introduced at the be¬ ginning of the second semester. The pep-squad consists of thirty-six members directed by Miss Anabel Cox. It was organized to work hand in hand with the band and has performed with ex¬ cellency on every occasion at which the band has performed. Together the two have won recognition not only in Pike County but throughout Southwest Missis¬ sippi. The blue and white costumes of the pep-squad with the maroon and white combination of the band uniforms, present in the exhibition performances a pic¬ ture of loveliness—one that lingers in the memories of spectators for months to come. Homecoming Day is an annual red letter day at Southwest. Each year more and more graduates return to mingle with former classmates and teachers, to re¬ vive memories of past days, to become acquainted with the student body, the faculty, and the new features of campus life. Homecoming this year was celebrated on November 15. Approximately one hundred and fifty former students enjoyed the activities of the day—a splendid program featuring the crowning of the Homecoming Queen, Miss Mattie John Buchanan; a tasty lunch, and a rousing good football game between the Co-Lin Wolves and the Southwest Pilots. 1.
