Business Manager COPYRIGHT PUBLISHED BY THE STUDENT BODY OF South west Junior College SUMMIT, MISS. VOLUME VII FOREWORD I t is difficult, when trying to picture a vast organization, to show every aspect of life just as it is lived. There is always a failure somewhere; perhaps, in one’s hurry and worry, an integral part of an institution is omitted; truly, there are a million little matters that may keep a work from being complete. However, in this, the seventh volume of Whis¬ pering Pines, we have attempted to depict accurately our entire college organization. Our goal has been to present in picture form a close-up of our athletics, faculty, buildings, students, campus, and social life. We have tried to make this issue of the Whispering Pines a glowing memento of the time we have spent at Southwest Junior College. Our work has not been easy, although we have had good material with which to work, but no such compilation of facts and figures could have been easy. Whatever we may have accomplished, is yours, and we hope that we have attained our goal in giving you something worthy. DEDICATION ♦ ♦ ♦ To what we hpnestly believe to be one of the finest student bodies ever enrolled in this or any other college, to a student body characterized by loyalty, co-operation, zeal, and intelligence, to the two hundred young men and women who compose our student body, we dedicate this, the seventh volume of Whispering Pines, as an expression of our appreciation and devotion to them. YOUNG Southwest Junior College has enjoyed one of the finest athletic seasons this year in the history of the college—a season, perhaps not fine in the list of victories won, but fine because of the excellent spirit and hard work that has gone into all of the athletic endeavors. The Athletic Department has, of course, suffered hardships and enjoyed vic¬ tories. At midterm, Head Coach I. I. Fox resigned from the faculty, thus placing the entire responsibility of directing the athletics on As¬ sistant Coach W. P. Young, who was made head coach. The football season got off to a bad start; the girls’ basketball season culminated in the winning of the State Championship; baseball and tennis seasons began too late to be represented in the Whispering Pines. All in all, however, we have few regrets about our athletics, and we certainly have one pleasant memory to recall. Although their defeats greatly out¬ numbered their victories, the Pilots played hard throughout the entire season, despite the many adversities that caused the team to be weak¬ ened from time to time. The iirst game of the year was played at Ellisville against Ellis- ville. After a hard-fought game, the opponents of the Pilots emerged victorious with a score of 31-19. Several of our best players suffered injuries in this game. In the game against Perkinston on Octob er 1, the Pilots were badly defeated, finishing the game with a score of 25-0. On October 7, the Pilots met the Scooba team in McComb and suffered another licking. The Pilots failed to score again, as at Per¬ kinston, and the final score was 6-0. In the game against Moorhead, the Pilots fought valiantly but they still did not make a score. Moorhead trampled them down by a score of 13-0. Southwest ' s team was still weakened by the loss of some of the best players. The Pilots ' first and only victory during the entire football sea¬ son came on October 22, when they met the Hinds Junior College team in McComb, and defeated them by a score of 7-0. This game was very exciting and was characterized by hard-fighting on both sides. In one of the liveliest games of the year, the Pilots lost again, this time to Poplarville. However, the score testifies that the compe¬ tition was great. The score was 12-7. One of the biggest defeats of the football season came to the Pilots on November 5, when Decatur whipped them with a score of 37-0. The Armistice Day game was played against Southeastern at Hammond. The game ended with a score of 59-0, in favor of South¬ eastern. r The game against the Co-Lin Wolves was one of the most excit¬ ing games of the year. The Pilots fought with all their might and main, and held the Wolves back until the last few minutes of the game. The final score was 12-6, in favor of the Wolves. Of all the games of ihe year, the Co-Lin-Southwest game was the hardest fought. The Pilots failed to make an envious record this year. However, a good many of the players will return next year, and there are many prospects of having a better season in 1939. ..BASKETBALL at SOlT Coach Young, Branch, Edwards, Brock, Wootm, May, Washburn, Davis, Waldrop, Mullen. The Southwest boys ' basketball team, handicapped by the loss of several men at the first of the season and by having a limited amount of good material, came through with a fairly good season. In all, the boys won six conference games, lost eleven, and won three out of five non-conference games. Before the season was half over, the Pilots lost Waldrop, Varnado, and Brumfield. Despite these losses, the team played some fine games, defeating every conference team they played at least once, with the exception of Wesson. High scorer for the season in conference games was Ralph Davis, who scored 135 points. Following him were Howard May with 122 points and Alvin Washburn with 109 points. THWEST JR. COLLEGE Fortenberry, Coach Hurst, Morgan, Moore, White, Love, Norman, Wall, Prescott, Starkey, Barron, Bennett. Seated: Broadway and Smith The girls ' basketball team this year proved to be one of the most formidable teams ever to take active part in the conference. At the State tournament, the team emerged victorious and brought the trophy home with them. The girls had a record of fifteen conference wins against two defeats, both losses being by very close margins. The girls won twenty-two conference games, counting the tournament games, and four non-conference struggles. Three of the players, Genevieve Love. Louise White, and Natalie Wall were selected on the All-State teams. Genevieve “Two Story Love averaged better than twenty-two points per game, and scored a total of 473 points for the season. This added to her 107 point total for three conference games, giving her a 580 point record, inclusive of all games. The OR STUDENT BODY OFFICERS JULIUS REEVES . There are clubs catering strictly to the social minded; there are the Christian Council, the Y. M. C. A., and the Y. W. C. A. for the spiritually inclined; there is a debate club, literary club, newspaper, and innumerable other organizations. One of the primary purposes of South¬ west is to educate its students in the ethics of good society, a purpose it accomplishes very easily through its organizations. However, the debaters made an excellent showing, and but for a few mishaps, it is believed that ihe team would have been among the winners. There were eighteen debaters on the job. The selction of the first team was difficult; choice lay closely divided by a thin line of those who could speak well, and those who could reason well. The de¬ bating team, we believe, was one of the finest ever on this campus.
