He was a fine, upstanding student, made a fine record as an athlete, and was beloved by all of his teachers. He later attended Millsaps College, but due to the press of circum¬ stances he did not finish. He married one of Pike Aggie ' s fine girls, Miss Thelma Walker, and to this union two fine boys were added. Six years ago Mr. Reeves was appointed to the Board of Trustees of Southwest Junior College by the Board of Supervisors and served continuously until his death. At the time of his death he was a valued employee of the State Highway Department. We, the Board of Trustees, and J. M. Kenna, President, wish to pay tribute to the worth of our comrade, and to express our profound sorrow at his untimely passing. “The work that he did testifies for him. While the number of vic¬ tories and defeats were exactly the same our boys were definitely the best team on the field in many instances where we lost. We WHISPERING SPINES In the initial game the Pilots outplayed the Mississippi College Re¬ serves and came out on top with a 13-12 victory. The featured attraction of the game was a 60 yard run by Jim Keith. However this game crip¬ pled some of our best men and when we went to Southeastern we lost 55-7. Still crippled our team hit a slump and lost to Perkinston by 7-0 and to Scooba by 6-0. The game with Scooba was lost partly by a series of bad breaks. Coming out of the losing streak the Pilots meeting Moorhead next, won the game. The game was very exciting. This is indicated by the close score of 13-12. Riding the waves of victory, Southwest swamped Raymond with our greatest score of the season, 20-7. The Pilots then journeyed south to Poplarville. Meeting their former coach—Stovall’s team—they met defeat by a 25-20 score. Our team, not satisfied with the results scheduled another game to be played at Columbia, Miss. In the next game, with Decatur, neither team could gain the ad¬ vantage. The two teams fought up and down the field, neither able to cross the touchdown line. When the gun sounded the score was 0-0. In weather that even the stands could not stand, Southwest met bitter defeat by a score of 25-0, when they met Wesson. In the second game of the year with Poplarville, the game that would really decide which was the better team, the Pilots were victorious. The game was played at Columbia, Miss., and we won with the score of 18-6. Bringing down the curtain on the football season the Pilots jour¬ neyed to Alexander City, Alabama where the coach and a large portion of our team live. Here they played the Alabama State Teachers College team and won 13-7. In the closing seconds of the game Robert DeCoux ran 90 yards after intercepting a pass to score the winning touchdown. Although we were not champions, the year was very successful. We lose only a few of our players so next year should be even more successful. SK WHISPERING TINES Fox Bullock Lewis Fitzgerald Waldrop Washburn Carlisle Smith Branch Burris Davis Maroun basketball Like the football team, the basketball team nearly split even with their opponents during the season. Starting slowly, Southwest and Poplarville divided a pair of games. Then Goodman won a couple. In a four game series with Raymond Southwest won three. Striking a recess after this winning streak Southwest lost a game each to Wesson and to Goodman. On top again the Pilots beat Poplarville two games. Going up against several good teams the Pilots lost to Wesson once and to Moorehead twice. Going into the Tournament with a team that was much feared by those teams that stood out in front we won the first game with Raymond. Advancing to the semi-finals the pilots lost to Good¬ man by a one point victory. The team was composed of: Forwards—Smith, Lewis, Davis, Bullock, and Burch; Guards— Fitzgerald, Canerday, Burris; Centers—Carlisle, and Washburn. The team produced this year at Southwest probably afforded the spectators more basketball enjoyment than any other team formed here. Practically all of the games were won or lost by a one or two point lead. Several of the games had to be played five minutes to ten minutes longer to break a tie. The games were breath-taking with their speed and desperate last minute fight¬ ing for victory. Games were won even as the whistle blew by a desperate throw to the goal. The team may not have been the best in the conference but it was surely the most interest¬ ing. m WHISPERING TINES Barron Carruth Hurst Wall McGuffee Maroun Butler Lewis Jones McKinley Matthews Willoughby Lewis Fortenberry girls ' Basketball TEAM RECORD The Girls, we believe, had the best team of the Junior Colleges in the state. Due to bad breaks they missed the championship. They beat the present champions, Wesson, by a very one sided score during the season. In a warm up game our girls lost to a Tupelo independent team. Swinging into play the Pilotesses won two from Poplarville and split a pair with Goodman. Still going strong Raymond was the next team to lose twice to our girls ' team. The tide turned when they invaded Raymond on their own court and Southwest lost two hard fought games. Meeting two strong teams just after losing two games was too hard for the Pilotesses and they lost one each to Wesson and to Goodman. Pulling out of this losing streak the girls won every game from then until the tournament was held. Those who met defeat by our sextet were: Poplarville—two games; Wesson—one game; Moorhead—two games. The season ended with a game with the Galveston, Texas Champions. The Pilotesses lost this game, but they showed good form. In the tournament Southwest lost to Wesson, the eventual Champions. The year was very successful although our girls missed the championship. We lose Willoughby, Carruth, Jones, and Butler, this year but “Deanie” expects to fill these places so we should have a good team next year. 9K WHISPERING TINES BASEBALL, TENNIS, AND BOXING Coach Young had good material for his baseball team this year and he quickly shaped up a crack team. They had beaten every team up to the time when the Annual went to press. Here is their record so far. They are playing Raymond now for the district championship. Southwest 5 Southeastern 8 Southwest 9 Southeastern 3 Southwest 5 Wesson 0 Southwest 7 Southeastern 6 Southwest 2 Wesson 3 Southwest 4 Wesson 1 Southwest 3 Wesson 7 Southwest 8 Wesson 6 Southwest 3 Raymond 6 Coach Fox had a good tennis team but they had many difficulties in their way. Southwest first beat Wesson and then Wesson retaliated by beating our courtsmen. Raymond then got a slight edge on us in a pair of matches, on our court and on theirs. In the tournament Southwest eliminated Wesson and then had to play Raymond the same evening for the championship. Naturally they were too tired to be at their best. They were beaten after some hard matches. Fred Hux is due much praise for boxing record. He hitch-hiked to Poplarville, fought two fellows and won the featherweight champion¬ ship. We congratulate Hux for his good boxing and grit. SK WHISPERING ' PINES I heard a thousand blended notes While in a grove, I sat reclined.
