FOOTBALL The Southwest football team was one of the best in the confer¬ ence and undoubtedly was the champion hard luck team of the year. Plain hard luck robbed the team of more than one victory as the “Pilots” out-fought and out-gained their opponents only to lose by close scores. The season opener at Ellisville was lost by a 6-0 score. Ellisville scored on a sustained drive and held their lead as the “Pilots” drove within the 5-yard line five times. The next week the team journeyed to Clinton and ran rough¬ shod over the Mississippi College Freshmen to the tune of 46-0. The jinx followed the squad to Perkinston, the following week. South¬ west doubled Perk in first downs and yardage gained, but lost by a heart-rending score of 13-12. Scooba invaded the “Pilots” drome for Southwest ' s first home game but met a wide awake “Pilot” team and went home on the short end of a 40-0 score. The strong Southeastern team entertained the “Pilots” next. Reserve strength told the story here as Southeastern won a hard fought game by a score of 7-0. This game proved costly as Bahoric received an injury that handicapped him throughout the rest of the year. Raymond brought a team of aerial artists to Southwest and rising to the call passed their way to a 6-6 tie. Raymond exhibited the fanciest pass attack seen all year. “Goat” Hale descended upon Southwest with an undefeated team from Poplarville, but had the misfortune to meet the Pilots at their best. Beautiful runs by LaCroix and Bahoric, a blocked punt and heads-up play of the entire Pilot team piled up a score of 26-0 in favor of Southwest. Injuries received in the Poplarville game cost the Pilots the next game as Decatur scored one touchdown to win 6-0. The life-long enemy, Wesson, visited the Pilots ' home field next and in a most thrilling game managed to tie Southwest 6-6. The less said about the last game (Post Season) the better. A tired, don ' t care team, went to Monroe, La., and was defeated 7-0 more points than the team had been scored on in the whole year. Joe “Butch” Sheridan was elected captain of the team and won a place as guard on the All-State team for the second consecutive year. The work of the entire Iron Man line was excellent and the backfield work of LaCroix and Bahoric was outstanding all year.
