YOUNG JOHN CAMPBELL FOOTBALL The Southwest football team was one of the best in the confer¬ ence and undoubtedly was the champion hard luck team of the year. Plain hard luck robbed the team of more than one victory as the “Pilots” out-fought and out-gained their opponents only to lose by close scores. The season opener at Ellisville was lost by a 6-0 score. Ellisville scored on a sustained drive and held their lead as the “Pilots” drove within the 5-yard line five times. The next week the team journeyed to Clinton and ran rough¬ shod over the Mississippi College Freshmen to the tune of 46-0. The jinx followed the squad to Perkinston, the following week. South¬ west doubled Perk in first downs and yardage gained, but lost by a heart-rending score of 13-12. Scooba invaded the “Pilots” drome for Southwest ' s first home game but met a wide awake “Pilot” team and went home on the short end of a 40-0 score. The strong Southeastern team entertained the “Pilots” next. Reserve strength told the story here as Southeastern won a hard fought game by a score of 7-0. This game proved costly as Bahoric received an injury that handicapped him throughout the rest of the year. Raymond brought a team of aerial artists to Southwest and rising to the call passed their way to a 6-6 tie. Raymond exhibited the fanciest pass attack seen all year. “Goat” Hale descended upon Southwest with an undefeated team from Poplarville, but had the misfortune to meet the Pilots at their best. Beautiful runs by LaCroix and Bahoric, a blocked punt and heads-up play of the entire Pilot team piled up a score of 26-0 in favor of Southwest. Injuries received in the Poplarville game cost the Pilots the next game as Decatur scored one touchdown to win 6-0. The life-long enemy, Wesson, visited the Pilots ' home field next and in a most thrilling game managed to tie Southwest 6-6. The less said about the last game (Post Season) the better. A tired, don ' t care team, went to Monroe, La., and was defeated 7-0 more points than the team had been scored on in the whole year. Joe “Butch” Sheridan was elected captain of the team and won a place as guard on the All-State team for the second consecutive year. The work of the entire Iron Man line was excellent and the backfield work of LaCroix and Bahoric was outstanding all year. LEROY HARRIS TUTT KIRKLAND NICK ARDILLO HENRY BAHORIC WALTON B ARNES JOHN KNOX FRED CAMP J. R. FOLEY EMMETT SIMS WILLOUGHBY Avalee is the outstanding- athletic star at Southwest. For two successive years she has been named as forward on the All-State Junior College Basketball team. This year she was Captain of the “Pilot” team and led them through a most successful year with a total of 539 points against Junior College teams for an average of over 25 points per game. Avalee holds the State rec¬ ord for baseball throw with a toss of 239 feet. At the field meet last year she also won the broad-jump and tied for first place in the high jump. New crowns will no doubt be added to her collec¬ tion this year which will even more firmly entrench her as Southwest ' s greatest Ath¬ lete. Knox Goings Conerly Prestridge Slaven Carruth Willoughby Hurst Stephenson Willoughby Garth McBride Toney Butler GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Coached by John I. Hurst and led by Captain Avalee Willoughby, the girls’ basketball team paraded through one of the most successful seasons in the history of Southwest Junior College. The girls opened the season with a two-game series at Decatur. De¬ catur won the first game and the second ended in a tie. The team then went on a sixteen game winning streak that was broken by Wesson after sickness and injuries had severely crippled the Pilotesses. This winning- streak shows: two wins from Ellisville, two from Raymond, one from Wesson, two from Moorhead, two more each from Ellisville and Raymond, one from Perkinston and four from Poplarville. Southwest defeated Scooba in the tournament but lost in the semi¬ finals to Goodman, who won the tournament. Captain Willoughby, who scored 539 points—more than the combined scores of the Southwest opponents, and Marjorie Butler were selected on the All-State team as forward and center respectively. Goings and R. Willoughby won honorable mention on the All-Star squad. The team was composed of A. Willoughby, Prestridge, Jones, Stephen¬ son and McBride at forward; Slaven, Butler, Conerly, R. Willoughby, and Frances Garth at center; and Goings, Carruth, Wood, and Toney at guard. Stovall Burch Lewis Smith Gill Cannerday Knox Harris Williams Ellerbee Bullock Burris Poole BOYS’ BASKETBALL From next to nothing to one of the most dangerous teams in the conference tells the story of this year’s baske:ball team. Coach Stovall had only two seasoned men, Harris and Williams, to build a team around but after the new men became used to play¬ ing with each other a very formidable team developed. The team started slow, losing two games to Decatur, two each to Ellisville, Raymond, Moorhead and one to Wesson. They then split even with Southeastern and Ellisville. The World Champion Celtics won a “Spectator’s” game and Raymond invaded the Pilots 7 squadron for a two game series. After dropping the first game the boys really hit their stride. They defeated Raymond, Perkinston, took four in a row from Poplarville and won a decisive victory over the Mexico “Y” team. A natural let-down occurred the following game and Wesson won a hard fought victory. In the tournament the team defeated Ellisville but lost to Moorhead, the eventual champions. The squad, lined up with Burch, Smith, Lewis and Bullock at forward; Ellerbee and Gill at center and Burris, Harris, Williams, Cannerday and Poole at guard. The all-round playing of Harris and the tournament plays of Cannerday and Bullock were the high spots of the season. . 31 BASEBALL, BOXING, TENNIS and TRACK Due to the abreviated school session this year which necessi¬ tated the publishing of the annual nearly a month earlier than usual, we are unable to include baseball, boxing, tennis, and track in this year ' s annual. Coach Young has only three men back from last year ' s start¬ ing line-up. However with several other lettermen returning and a number of excellent first year men on hand, Coach Young may be able to place another formidable nine on the diamond this year. The boxing prospects are bright this year for Coach Lloyd Stovall. Boxing has been included among the athletic activities of Southwest for only two years; yet it has reached a high degree of efficiency in that time. Starting from scratch last year, Coach Stovall developed his team to runners-up for the championship. This year with feather-weight champion E. W. Graves, runner- up Dahl Graves, LaCroix, Benglis and Hux, all training hard, the conference title seems more a reality than a thought. Exactly one-half of last year ' s conference champion tennis team is back this year. Lillian Felder, the title holder in the wo¬ men ' s singles and Hughes and Prestridge, the women ' s doubles team that dropped only two matches last year are back. Graduation took champion Edwards, Mixon and Moore and left the team without any out-standing men performers whatso¬ ever. If Coach Pope can replace these three men, he bids fair to retain the title another year. Willoughby and LaCroix are the only members of last year ' s track team who are back this year. Willoughby set a new state record in baseball throw, won the broad jump and tied for first place in the high jump at the Track and Field meet last year and is better this year. LaCroix is a sprint man of no mean ability and while these two cannot make a complete team, with a little help they may win enough points to put Southwest among the leaders. The “Whispering Pines wishes these teams the best of luck and leaves next year ' s Annual to list their accomplishments. WHITTINGTON LAVELLE WILLIAMS STEVE VARNADO GLEE CLUB Southwest Junior College can point with pride to its Glee Club— a Glee Club that can take its place as an equal to any in the State. Not only does the Glee Club sing songs of beauty and the higher type but also includes in its repertoire numerable comic and popular songs. The organization enjoyed a very successful season this past year and has heaped laurels upon itself from one end of the state to the other. At each appearance the Glee Club has stolen the show and made itself the high spot of the program. On Nov. 14th the Hi-Y conference played host to the Glee Club and was charmed by the program presented. The State Baptist con¬ vention at Natchez was next visited by the Glee Club and an untold amount of praise was given the Glee Club for the superb performance which they gave. New Zion and Mars Hill were next visited by the Glee Club. These two programs were entirely of a religious nature and delivered in music, messages that were as good and as uplifting as any mes¬ sage a speaker could have delivered. The Southwest basketball team played a Mexican team as the high spot of homecoming day but again the Glee Club stole the show when they sang the Mexican National Anthem in Spanish. The Club next sang at a Birthday Party given in honor of Mr. Theo Covington, an outstanding citizen of Summit. On March 17th a program was presented for the Rotary Club of McComb that left the Rotarians begging for more of the delight¬ ful music. The last trip of the year was made to Progress where a pro¬ gram of old American Folk songs was given that brought back fond memories to the grown-ups and which made the younger persons ap¬ preciate even more the music that is so often classed as old. As the Whispering Pines goes to press, the Glee Club is prepar¬ ing for their annual Recital and the staff feels sure that this will be another triumph for Southwest ' s outstanding musical organization. Congratulations to Mrs. Edna Watkins Hewitt and the 1937 Glee Club. DeLAUGHTER GARNER BURLESON JACK OVERMYER GEORGE NEWMAN DEBATING With only cwo men, DeLaughter and Overmyer left over from last year s team, Miss Thomae worked unceasingly until she turned out another championship team. The Pilots defeated Raymond and Wesson to win the district title and the right to enter the State Junior College Tournament for the third consecutive year. The debaters defeated a well coached team from Poplarville in the semi-finals to gain the final round with Goodman. For the second straight year Southwest and Goodman met in the finals and in bo:h cases the de¬ bates ended in a tie. While only four places are available on the team, a great deal of credit is due to the following who served as alternates: Fred Camp, Roger Bar¬ rett, Eliot Jones, and Helen Wilson. Too much credit cannot be given to Miss Tnomae for her excellent work in coaching the debaters to the top for the second straight year.
