FOOTBALL The Southwest football team of 1935 was greatly improved over the two previous years. Better players and good coaching were the main factors in the rise to fourth place in the Junior College Conference. The team opened the season with a 13 to 0 victory over Scooba on the McComb field before a large first game crowd. The following week Perkinston brought a strong team and eked out a 7-7 tie after trailing for three quar¬ ters. The Pilots opened strong and scored early in the game. Perkinston settled down and fought a game battle and scored late in the game on a for¬ ward-lateral, pass play that caught the Summit safety flat-footed as Ca- rello, fleet halfback, sped thirty yards to score standing up. After an open date the Pilots engaged Ellisville for the third straight home game. Entering the game quite confident (Perkinston had just beaten Ellisville) the Pilots played a good first quarter and threatened to score twice. However, Ellisville fought hard and came back to run rough¬ shod over the Pilots for the remainder of the game, the final score being 19 to 0 with Nix running 60 yards through the Pilots without any inter¬ ference. The following week, Southwest met the strong Southwestern team and played a wonderful game. The experience and extra weight of the Southwestern team finally swayed the tide and the Pilots lost a hard fought game 19 to 6. Coming back from this hard game the Pilots engaged Raymond and won handily 52 to 6 with every man playing good football. Poplarville, traditional Pilot foe, entertained the Pilots on their home field but bowed before a superior team 26 to 13 in the best game of the season for the Pilots. Decatur, with a large squad of husky men, came to Summit next and the Pilots avenged a string of previous defeats by trouncing them 34 to 7. Decatur had played some good games earlier in the season, but the Pilots took the offensive from the start and completely bewildered the Decatur team throughout the game. On the coldest night of the season the cocky Pilots were rudely upset by the fighting Millsaps Freshmen team 13 to 6. The Pilots scored early in the game and could have scored easily several more times but were too cocky to try hard. As a result, the Minors scored twice on laterals and fought with determination to hold their lead and win a deserved victory. “ In the final game of the season the Pilots played Wesson, their life¬ time foes. The game was well played throughout. The Pilots scored first but the half ended 7 to 6 for Wesson. In zhe second half the Wolves scored on a forward pass to make the final score 14 to 6. Addison, Lacy and Bougeois played brilliantly in the backfield throughout the season while the line play of Grimmer, Burleson and Sheridan was outstanding in every game. Sheridan was selected as guard on the All-State Junior College team at the close of the season.
