JOE WILLIAMS NORRIS WHITE GRENES FREILER NOLAN PRICE PAT BOURGEOIS JOHN CAMPBELL BERNICE EDWARDS DAHL GRAVES WILLIAM MOORE FOOTBALL The Southwest football team of 1935 was greatly improved over the two previous years. Better players and good coaching were the main factors in the rise to fourth place in the Junior College Conference. The team opened the season with a 13 to 0 victory over Scooba on the McComb field before a large first game crowd. The following week Perkinston brought a strong team and eked out a 7-7 tie after trailing for three quar¬ ters. The Pilots opened strong and scored early in the game. Perkinston settled down and fought a game battle and scored late in the game on a for¬ ward-lateral, pass play that caught the Summit safety flat-footed as Ca- rello, fleet halfback, sped thirty yards to score standing up. After an open date the Pilots engaged Ellisville for the third straight home game. Entering the game quite confident (Perkinston had just beaten Ellisville) the Pilots played a good first quarter and threatened to score twice. However, Ellisville fought hard and came back to run rough¬ shod over the Pilots for the remainder of the game, the final score being 19 to 0 with Nix running 60 yards through the Pilots without any inter¬ ference. The following week, Southwest met the strong Southwestern team and played a wonderful game. The experience and extra weight of the Southwestern team finally swayed the tide and the Pilots lost a hard fought game 19 to 6. Coming back from this hard game the Pilots engaged Raymond and won handily 52 to 6 with every man playing good football. Poplarville, traditional Pilot foe, entertained the Pilots on their home field but bowed before a superior team 26 to 13 in the best game of the season for the Pilots. Decatur, with a large squad of husky men, came to Summit next and the Pilots avenged a string of previous defeats by trouncing them 34 to 7. Decatur had played some good games earlier in the season, but the Pilots took the offensive from the start and completely bewildered the Decatur team throughout the game. On the coldest night of the season the cocky Pilots were rudely upset by the fighting Millsaps Freshmen team 13 to 6. The Pilots scored early in the game and could have scored easily several more times but were too cocky to try hard. As a result, the Minors scored twice on laterals and fought with determination to hold their lead and win a deserved victory. “ In the final game of the season the Pilots played Wesson, their life¬ time foes. The game was well played throughout. The Pilots scored first but the half ended 7 to 6 for Wesson. In zhe second half the Wolves scored on a forward pass to make the final score 14 to 6. Addison, Lacy and Bougeois played brilliantly in the backfield throughout the season while the line play of Grimmer, Burleson and Sheridan was outstanding in every game. Sheridan was selected as guard on the All-State Junior College team at the close of the season. GRADY COFFEE JULIUS BAUM ASHLEY COMER GARNER BURLESON WILLIAM GRIMMER WOODROW ADDISON JOE SHERIDAN . ? - ' , : Stovall Morgan E. W. Graves LaCroix D. Graves Allison Grimmer Hooks BOXING Boxing, introduced for the first time at Southwest by Coach Stovall, proved successful with the Southwest team placing second in the Junior College Conference. E. W. Graves battled his way to the top for the cham¬ pionship in the featherweight class Audice Morgan placed second in the heavyweight class. Dahl Graves lost a close fight for the championship of the welterweight crown, and William Grimmer was runner up for the light-heavy title. With the entire team, with the exception of Grimmer, coming back next year, Southwest bids fair to take honors in this sport next year. Stovall Addison Williams Douglas Harris Comer Varnado Edwards Moore Brumfield Barnes BOYS’ BASKETBALL Following a good season in Football, the Basketball team with only one man from last years’ squad had a disastrous season winning only two series out of a total of six. The Pilots won from Perkinston and Millsaps Freshmen and lost series to Wesson, Ellisville, Raymond, and Poplarville and a single game :o the Mississippi College Freshmen. In building a team from new men Coach Stovall used Edwards, Harris and Addison at forward, Moore and Douglas at center, and White, Williams, Brumfield and Varnado at guard. These men played good basketball but the team lacked a forward with a sure eye for the basket. Many close games were lost because no player on the team could score a goal. With most of chese men returning for next season somewhat rosier prospects are in store for basketball enthusiasts. Stovall Lee Hooks Butler Jordan Jordan Douglas Brumfield Newman Stevenson Willoughby Lacy Greer LaCroix Barron Corkern TRACK The track team has started the season slowly having lost two meets but is showing improvement in all events each meet. The bright spots have been the performances of Willoughby and Addison. Wil¬ loughby led in individual scoring honors in both meets with firsts in broad jump, high jump, baseball throw and 75 yard dash. The An¬ nual Track and Field Meet has not been held, but some of her records exceed the present Junior College records and she bids fair to make a good showing. Addison’s broad jumping and discus throwing have been outstanding in dual meets. Other performers are Lacy, javelin, LaCroix, hurdles, Hooks, mile, Butler, mile and half mile, Jordan, shot put and discus, Stevenson, shot put and high jump and Douglas, high jump. Going’s Prestridge Willoughby Greer Simmons Brumfield Conerly Rogers Hughes Magee Barron GIRLS’ BASKETBALL n . bright spot in the Winter sport season at Southwest was the Gills Basketball Team. The excellent team of the preceeding year was brought over practically intact and was augmented by some good Freshmen players. Under the coaching of Dean Hurst these girls acquitted them¬ selves well in every game of the season and came through with an im¬ pressive record. In the Annual Tournament the team was eliminated in a very close game in the semi-finals. Two technical errors in the officiating, one by the scorer and one by the referee, were largely responsible for keeping the Quillies out of the finals and a chance for the championship. Ihe team was made up of the following players: Willoughby, Hughes, Rogers and Prestridge at forward; Simmons, Greer, Conerly and Brumfield at center; and Barron, Wall, Goings, Magee, Wells and Williams at guard. Willoughby was selected at forward on the All-State Junior College Team after a brilliant season. Wall, Greer and Simmons rounded out their second year on the team and played wonderfully all season. The team record shows three wins from Poplarville, three from Perkinston, two from Southeastern, one from Goodman and one from Raymond. The loss column shows three losses to Raymond, three to Wesson, two to Goodman and one to Ellisville. Bond Hammack Edwards Pope Mixon McCurley Felder Prestridge Wall Hughes TENNIS The 1936 Tennis team at Southwest is the best in the history of the school. Under the coaching of Professor Bond the team has won four dual meets and lost one. Edwards, 1935 singles champion, re¬ peated again this year and did not lose a match all season. Lillian Felder, former State High School champion, won the girls singles in the Junior College Tournament and did not lose a match all season. Boys doubles, Willie Moore and Tommie Moore, were only medi¬ ocre during the season but rose to great heights and advanced to the semi-finals in the Tournament. Girls’ doubles, Hughes and Prest¬ ridge, also won their way to the semi-finals in the Tournament. T. L. Moore, number two singles, played well during the season being unde¬ feated in his matches. Perkinston won the team trophy with 13 points and Southwest was second with 10 points. Newman Norred Roddy Addison Coffee Varnado Crum Bates McCullough Campbell Lovorn Freiler McDavid Young’ Barnes Williams Baum BASEBALL The 1936 Baseball Team at Southwest is off to an auspicious start as the Annual goes to press. The team has split even in series with Wesson, Raymond and Southeastern thus far. The team is composed of Freiler, catcher; Roddy, pitcher; Williams, first base; Baum, second base; Graves, shortstop; Lovorn, third base; and Barnes, Addison, Hutson, McCullough and Campbell, outfielders. Williams, Lovorn, Addison and McCullough are leading in slugging while Baum, Graves and Hutson are performing well on defense. Coach W. P. Young is in charge of the team. 1ST SEMESTER Y. M. C. A. With only one speaker from the pre¬ vious year’s team back, Miss Thomae had to start out with inexperienced speakers but after many hours of practice her fondest hopes were fulfilled. The debaters defeated Wesson and Raymond to win this district and set a record by winning all twelve decisions. In the State Tournament the de¬ baters defeated Ellisville in the semi-finals and then tied with Goodman for the state championship. Too much credit cannot be given Miss Thomae and the debaters for the record made this year. .
