Athletic Director .Coach Assistant Coach Student Manager ATHLETICS RESUME Reckoned in terms of games won and lost, the 1934 football season was not a success. High hopes for a winning team were handed repeated jolts in the form of good material withdrawing from school, the persistent and constantly recurring illness or injury of many dependable performers, and a very small squad, numerically and physically. Nevertheless, the 1934 edition of the Pilots, because of their game, skillful, and sportsmanlike ap¬ pearance in the face of heavy odds, commands the respect and admiration of all. SOUTHEASTERN The Summiteers “blew the lid off” with a well played, hard fought struggle with Southeastern at Hammond. The first half ended with hon¬ ors fairly even but Southeastern ' s superior weight and experience plus in¬ juries and bad breaks to Pilot regulars combined to beat down a stubborn resistance in the second half. Paced by Benglis and Harris in the back- field, and Kueteman at tackle the Pilots made at least three touchdown drives halted only in the shadow of the goal posts. Final score 13 to 0. LOUISIANA COLLEGE Minus the services of five regulars the Pilots trekked to the lair of the Louisiana College varsity Wildcats for the second game of the year. Again a woeful inadequacy of reserves told heavily in the latter stages of the fray with the Louisianians forging ahead to win 19 to 6. Starnes flung several successful forward passes, one of which, garnered in by “Red” Newman, led to Southwest ' s lone tally in the first quarter. Barnette ' s generalship, Starnes ' passing and Kueteman ' s line-play gave the spec¬ tators repeated thrills. ■§ Sff ' y. BOGALUSA Y Making good use of a dazzling passing attack Southwest defeated an aggregation cf former Collegians from the Bogalusa Y 18-2, at McComb. The game was a loosely played affair featured by Don Zimmerman’s ab¬ sence, a few minutes play by Coaches “Paddy” and “Willy Paul,” and “Monkey” Edwards’ pass catching. PERKINSTON The least said the better about this, the lowest ebb of the season. An evenly played first half wrought havoc in the Pilot ranks, taking an enormous toll of injuries. Inspired Perkinston play routed the Pilots 38-6 in the second half after a 6-6 first half. RAYMOND Maddened by the previous Saturday’s debacle Southwest proved their mettle by a hard earned victory over the Eagles from Raymond. Southwest proved superior both aground and aloft, rolling up good yardage and numerous first downs. Bacot and Regan in the forward wall played bang-up ball, ably backed by Woolam and Harris. Score 13-7. POPLARVILLE “P’ville” brought the heaviest team of the year to McComb, out¬ weighing Southwest some 20 lbs. per man. Even so, it was only after the hardest kind of a scrap, replete with thrills and freaks, that the Pilots suc¬ cumbed 20-7. Statistics of yardage and first downs favored Southwest, but breaks put Poplarville ahead in scoring. Harris made a 70 yaid return of a kickoff in a pretty exhibition of broken field running. Benglis played consistently well along with those plucky, watchfob guards Baum and Martin. MORGAN MCGT HARRIS MART M DECATUR Again invaders, the Pilots journeyed to Decatur, more badly crip¬ pled than at any other stage of the season. It was heartbreaking to lose such a gallantly, desperately fought battle against one of the best teams in the conference. Both cf Decatur’s scores were somewhat freaky, neither resulting from sustained drives. Every Pilot played well but, Bacot, Morgan, Wilson, Harris and Lyons were outstanding. Score 13-0. ELLISVILLE Another tough one to lose in which the Pilots displayed a fighting spirit which never faltered. It was a see-saw affair with the outcome constantly in doubt, Ellisville finally emerging on the long end of a 20-13 score. Had it not been for a bad case of “muffitis,” on the part of pass receivers, there’d have been a happier tale to tell. Smith at tackle and Roth at end turned in nice performances along with Harris and Benglis in the backfield. WESSON In the wind-up game of the season with that ancient and bitter foe, Copiah-Lincoln, the Pilots displayed their best football of the year. Taking advantage of the role of underdog, the Pilots nipped the tails of the Wolves, undefeated Junior College Champions, for three quarters of a well played thrill-packed game. For the first time the Wolves’ de¬ vastating running attack was stopped cold. The Pilots outplayed, out¬ fought and outgained their old rivals by a good margin but—again the freaks of the game and Lady Luck saw fit to deprive the homesters of a merited victory. All who saw action played their hearts out but those who watched Captain Jack Nelson perform will long remember his in¬ spired end play. “Dcoey” Bacot, all Conference guard, played a great game to climax a brilliant career at Southwest. Lindsey, Jones, Mixon, Reeves, Edwards, Wilson, Deal, Lovern, Coach Bond, Walker TENNIS The tennis team under the direction of Coach Bond is rapidly rounding into form as the Annual goes to press. The team composed of Edwards, No. 1, Mixon, No. 2, Lindsey, No. 3, and Jones, No. 4, has played good tennis and is showing improve¬ ment in their finer points of the game. The Junior College Tourna ment Singles championship was won by Bernice Edwards. TRACK The 1935 track team shows a great improvement over last year’s squad in the field events. Grimmer, shot put and discus, Wells, pole vault and broad jump, and javelin, Captain Regan, high jump, and Nelson, javelin, are the outstanding field performers. Dunaway, quarter miler, is Southwest’s best man on the cinder path. Edna Merle Greer, dashes and broad jump, and Winnie Bcyd, baseball throw, hold high school records in their events and should win points in the Junior College Conference. BOYS’ BASKETBALL The boys’ basketball team for the 1935 season was a mild success. By winning half of its games, the team played good bas¬ ketball in winning four games from Raymond, one from Wesson, one from Southeastern, two from Millsaps College freshmen, and one from Louisiana College varsity. The team lost a close game to Wesson, four to Poplarville, Junior College champions, two to Ellisville, one to Goodman, and one to Southeastern. The team reached its peak during the last week of the reg¬ ular season. Southwest won handily from Millsaps Freshmen on Monday night. On Wednesday, the team played its best game of the season when the strong Louisiana College varsity was beaten by the score of 44 to 39. The team functioned as a unit the entire game and were masters of the situation at all times. The next night the team played the strong Ellisville five. After leading most of the second half, the Southwest boys let down during the last two minutes and Ellisville eased ahead as the final whistle blew. From the spectator’s point of view, it was the most thrilling game of the season. Two well matched teams fighting hard with only a few points difference in the score at all times. Coach Paddock started the season with only five lettermen from last year’s squad, Captain Wilson, Willoughby, Ivey, Edwards, and Morgan. Lee and Dunnaway, members of the Pike County Agricultural High School team that won its way to the State tourna¬ ment in 1933, Smith, Blackwell and Grimmer rounded out the squad. The team lined up with Willoughby, Edwards, and Blackwell at for¬ wards; Lee, Grimmer, and Smith, who alternated at forward, at cen¬ ter, and Wilson, Ivey, Dunnaway, and Morgan at guard. Willoughby was one of the best forwards in the Junior College Conference. His eagle eye and steady hand accounted for an aver¬ age of sixteen points per game. The defensive work of Ivey, and Wilson deserves mention, too. The team was composed entirely of fresh¬ man players. After a slow start, the team attained mid season form and made a fine record. A summary of the season shows four losses to Raymond, two to Wesson and one to Poplarville. The win column shows three games from Poplarville, two from Ellisville, two from Southeastern, one from Goodman, and two from the Millsaps College Varsity. Individually, the brilliant work of Greer at center, the stellar playing of Boyd and Simmons at forward, and the con¬ sistent guarding of Barron were the standouts of the season. These players were abetted by Wall, who rose to superior heights on occasions, Wells, Connerly, always consistent and always fighting hard, Butler, Sharpe, Felder, and Hornsby. All of these players are eligible for another year of com¬ petition and with a few reserves from the incoming Freshmen, Barh m - gua m BoYO-Foamm buriZR-GZHrm Commit- mmm FeMn-Gumb ■ the team should reach newer heights. No games have been played, and, in fact, the schedule has not been arranged. Therefore, we include a sum¬ mary of last year ' s record and leave the present to be included in the 1936 yearbook. The season ' s record shows wins from: McComb, Wesson, Brookhaven CCC, Southeastern La. College, Camp Rice, Ellisville, Perkinston, Quin ' s Bridge, and Woodrow; and losses to: McComb, Pricedale, Wesson, Quin ' s Bridge, Camp Rice, Perkinston, and Southeastern. The team was composed of Woolam, Starnes and Douglas as pitchers, Steve Walker and Dude Ball, catchers, Hutchinson, Parks, McDavid, and Turney, infield, and Casey Jones, Varnado, Newman, and one of the pitchers in the outfield. Substitutes were Wallace and McElwee. A close battle for batting honors was fought with Starnes, home run king of the club, Casey Jones and Cy Parks, leading. Several of these players are Freshmen and are back to ease the task of Coach Hurst in producing a championship team. Andrew McDavid was elected captain of the 1935 team. % Y. M. C. A. The team won the district championship without losing a single debate. The team was eliminated in the semi-final round at Jackson by the team that won the State Championship. Two speakers can make the same speech, and one will present it in such an entertaining man¬ ner that he will win enthusiastic applause. The other with the same words will have half the audience yawning behind their hands, and the entire crowd will be relieved when he sits down. The difference lies in presentation. Printing may be so inviting to your eyes as to compel you to read it. Differently printed, your eyes may instinctively refuse to read the same copy. When your customers yawn at your printing it means that you have made a mistake. Used a printer who did not understand presen¬ tation. Let us vitalize your printing with vigorous pre¬ sentation, coupled with a created sales idea that will lift your message out of the just pa- per-and-ink class and animate it with printed Salesmanship which alone can command re¬ sults. The McComb Enterprise Creative ' Printing There is not a city, town, hamlet or cross roads community in Mississippi but at some time has used Enterprise printing.
