HURST, in his fifteen years of coaching at Southwest has made a very cred¬ itable record. His teams have won several State Championships and are always rated as formid¬ able, clean playing, and hard charging by op¬ ponents. MANAGER CLIFTON L. WHITE performed his duties as manager in a very capable manner. He was ambitious, alert and efficient, and just¬ ly deserves the coveted “S” that he earned. ASSISTANT COACH W. P. YOUNG was of great service to Coach Hurst in his first year at Southwest. His work with the linemen show¬ ed its quality in their improved playing in the latter part of the sea¬ son. CAPTAIN WALTER JONES FITZGERALD is one of the steady, hard-work¬ ing type who turns in bang-up playing every game. So consistent was his playing at center that he rated first place on nearly every Ail- State team. He was one of the letter men carried over from the previous year, and both years received a position on all-state teams. ‘FRESHMAN’ BRUMFIELD Fullback Short, but plenty tough, is a fine description for this stocky machine that was “bound to go through.” His gains were as sure to come as the sun to rise. ‘SIM” SIMMONS, End [ ‘Sim” turned in class game of ball every Saturday afternoon. He jumped into the posi¬ tion of first string end at the first of the year and held that position until the end. “BAYOU” BARNETTE, Quarterback One of the best football generals ever to play on a Southwest team. Per¬ sistent in his gains and smart at his signal post, he turned in a real season o f football. “STEVIE” WALKER, End One of the biggest men on the Southwest squad, and one of the scrap¬ piest ! During the lat¬ ter part of the year he did excellent work. When “Dooey” gets mad—well, watch out I “HOSS” WALLACE, Guard Another one of the finest linemen the Pilots had last season. He played real football from the beginning to the end. “GOOD WILL CHARLIE” HAZLEWOOD, Halfback A fine running back with plenty of drive and power. This is “Good Will Charlie” in per¬ son. “CY” PARKS, Halfback “Cy” showed remarkable ability as a back throughout his playing. He was right there when the going was rough, and stayed there. V V V V V V V V V V V V V V V V V y V V V V V V V V V V V V V WHISPERING PINES “MUTT” JEFFREYS, Halfback The best triple threat man on the entire Pilot squad. His beautiful passes, his distanced punts, and his ready gains made him indis¬ pensable in the back field. “BOUGALOO” NELSON, End The figure that shot around end on every play smearing the visiting teams for heavy losses was “Bougaloo.” He was in on every play, and deserved his “S.” ‘ROOMIE’ WILSON, Guard Another boy whose name was not in all the start¬ ing line-ups, but who could deal plenty of misery when he was in there. “HARLOW” MORGAN, Guard “Jean Harlow’s” blonde head was seen in every play of the game in which he was in. He worked like a tiger and is expected to be a big factor in the line for next year. “BABY” REEVES, Tackle (Picture omitted through error) Full of stamina, eager to fight hard, and with a native talent for a tackle—T hat’s “Baby.” V V V V V V V V V V V V V y V V V V V V V V V V V, V ' V V V V V V V WHISPERING PINES V V V V V V V V V V V V V V V V V V V V V V V V V V V J V V V V V V V FIRST ROW: Page, Ball, Morgan, Barnette, Brumfield, Hazelwood, Simmons. Resume The 1933 football season for the Pilot squad could not in scores be called a successful season, yet in actual playing the Southwest boys turned in one of the most consistent series cf games in several years. They only lacked the lucky breaks, and the last minute stimuli to put the scoring plays through. Beginning the season, the rugged squad met defeat at the hands of the tough Southeastern La. College eleven. Hardly recuperating from this game, Southwest went up against the mighty Goodman Bulldogs, who were the “next best” to the champions, and went down 19 to 0. In the La. College game, the Pilots showed their unusual pluck and grit, when they held the four year college team to a 7 to 0 win. In the game with the Perkinston squad on the next week-end, the score at the end of one of the most thrilling games of the season was 6-6. Taking down the colors of two of the strong contenders for the Junior Col¬ lege Championship fell the lot of the Pilots in the next two games, when they trounced Ellisville to the tune of 20-7, and the highly touted Raymond Eagles by the overwhelming score of 33-6. For the remainder of the season only tough breaks were in store for the “Pilotown boys.” Losing hard fought games to Poplarville, Decatur and Wes¬ son. Despite these figures, the Pilots are to be praised for their unusual sports¬ manship. Everywhere they played, they were always complimented upon this outstanding trait, which is the real “stuff” that makes the team. y V V V V V V V V y V V V V V V V V V V V V V V V V V V V WHISPERING PINES V V V V V V V V V V v V V V v V V V V V V V V V V V V V V V V V V V V V SEASON’S RECORD Southwest. 0 Southeastern La. 6 Southwest. 0 Holmes .19 Southwest. 0 La. The championship high school squad of last year with but one exception entered college in the fall. In addition to these, five regulars on the previous year’s squad and several very fine freshman players were trying for posi¬ tions. Coach Hurst waited until the season was well un¬ der way before he cut the squad to the regular num¬ ber of ten players. His var¬ sity selections were Simmons, D. Edwards, B. Edwards and Willoughby, forwards, Conn and Walker, centers, and Starnes, Wilson, Ivey and Morgan guards. These play¬ ers proudly carried the colors of Southwest through a sea¬ son of hard-fought games. An unfortunate accident happen¬ ed to Wilson near the close of the season which crippled the team in the final series with Perkinston and also in the Junior College Tournament V V V V V V V V y y V V V V V V V V V V V V V V V V V WHISPERING PINES V V V V V V V V V y V V V V V V V V V V V V V V V v V V V V V V V V V V V Our team displayed cham¬ pionship form in several games during the season, and it was both admired and fear¬ ed by all of its rivals. A fine spirit of sportsmanship al¬ ways prevailed on the team and the members played a hard, close game, of fast bas¬ ketball. In the conference race, Southwest split four games with both Poplarville and Perkinston, and lost two each to Wesson and Moore- head and one to Goodman. Simmons was high point man for the season closely followed by D. Edwards. The work of Starnes and Wil¬ son kept many opposing for¬ wards “bottled up” and shooting wildly in vain for goals by opposing teams. Every man on the squad made very creditable records and six of these lettermen will be back for the 1934-35 season for another trial for the Jun¬ ior College Championship. SECOND ROW—Parks, Wal¬ ker, Hutchison, Wallace, McElwee. THIRD ROW Woolam, Starnes, Coach Hurst, Jones, Douglas, BASEBALL Although the baseball team was eliminated from the Junior Col¬ lege Championship in the first round, the season was acclaimed a success. The season ' s record shows a majority of games won against some strong teams. The team was led in batting by Irving Parks, Elque Starnes and Casey Jones. Claude Woolam, Elque Starnes, Bernard Blailock and Carl Douglas comprised an efficient and well balanced pitching staff while the infield of Hutchison, Parks, Mc¬ David and Tumey, and an outfield of Jones, Varnado and Starnes fielded well behind the hurlers. Steve Walker and Siebie Ball were the team ' s catchers. An analysis of the team’s record in Junior College circles shows wins from Wesson, Ellisville, Perkinston, and Southeastern and loss¬ es to Perkinston, Southeastern, and three games to Wesson. Only five players on the entire squad will be lost by graduation and it is believed that Southwest will be in the Championship play next sea¬ son.
