State, Director of Athletics, has made an enviable re¬ cord since he first assumed his duties as head coach in 1919. Prior to the es¬ tablishment of a two year Junior Col¬ lege, Hurst had been severely handi¬ capped but now with more material available he will no doubt have a great¬ er success. It is a tribute to him that he would rather instill the ideals of sportsmanship and gameness in his teams than defeat his greatest rival. Z. L, Loflin, L. S. U., track, tennis and assistant football coach came here in the fall of 1932 and became at once a favorite among the students. The success of the athletic teams under his supervision are a mute testimony of his worth and faithfulness. Monroe (Red) McElveen, Miss. State, returned to the scene of his High School triumphs to become coach. His basket¬ ball teams have won the Southwest championship two years consecutively (1932-’33), a distinction no other high school team has attained in recent years. Smythie Alford, M. S. C. W., is in charge of girls athletics and physical education. The record she has made this year is expected to create greater interest in the girls teams. REEVES TACKLE ■ fl - WHlSPERIHG- Fines RESUME 1932 SEASON Elwin Burt—Sports Editor 1 N SEPTEMBER 1, one week before school started, Coach Hurst lined up a ragged bunch of country boys for the first workout and for what proved to be the start of a very successful season The added year of college work made possible the return of many letter men, and in a short time the ragged squad had developed into three impressive football machines. The Southwest Pilots met their first opponent and also their first de¬ feat r Hammond, La. The Pilots were not fully organized and had to bow before the heavier Southeastern team in a 12 to 6 decision. It was unfortunate that Southwest met the strong Goodman team next. Demoralized by the preceding defeat and as yet uncertain of ground gaining plays, the Pilots fought hard but were nc match for the boys from Holmes County, losing 14 to 0. And then came victory and revenge! The overwhelming defeat at the hands of the Millsaps Minors of the preceding year still rankled in the hearts of the letter men and “Beat Millsaps or Bust” was their battle cry. To make a short story shorter, they didn ' t bust, defeating the Freshmen 12 to 0 in the Pilots ' first night game. For a while the Pilots had easy sailing, defeating State Teachers Freshmen 14 to 6; Perkinston 6 to 0; EUisville 13 to 0; and Raymond 26 to 0. Beat Poplarville! Stop Poplarville! For the first time Southwest had a fighting chance to overcome their strongest opponent. Feeling ran high and the opening whistle found a large crowd of enthusiastic supporters calling for victory. But the Pilots did not win. A long pass in the early part of the game gave Poplarville a lead of 6 to 0 and they fought doggedly to maintain it. The Pilots were constantly “knocking at the door” but could not call up the needed drive to the goal line. With 45 seconds left to play, they placed the ball on the one yard line, but in the excitement and rush were unable to score. However, the disappointed fans carried away with them the memory of a gallant eleven that would not give up, fighting a heavier team to a standstill and outplaying a team that was doped to overwhelm them. Hats off to the fighting Pilots! More glorious in defeat than in victory. Refusing to let down, the Pilots came back to trounce Clark College 24 to 0 as a fitting climax to Southwest ' s first Homecoming Day. Thus ended the season. And thus the Pilots came into the limelight, not for games won and lost—not for third honors in the conference but as a k i ■ ■ WHiSPERfriG- P1F1ES HIGH SCHOOL SQUAD Standing: Coach McElveen, Herndon, Felder, Hall, Godbold, McDavid, Mgr. White. Kneeling: C. Magee, Willoughby, Jones, Ivey, Parnell. Sitting: R. Magee, Garth, Barnett, McDaniel, Reeves, Moak, Campbell. There were several contributing factors that reacted against the suc¬ cess of our High School team. First, football had been discontinued for two years, thus there was no inducement for players to come to Summit. Second, the college used the best High School players on its team. Third, the Captain and most formidable defense man, Johnson broke his leg early in the season. However, we are proud of the fight displayed by the High School team in all its games and expect it soon to be counted one of the strongest teams in this section. To Southwest Junior College goes the honor of playing the first interna¬ tional game ever staged by a Junior Co 1 lege. On February 17, the Pilots met the Fals of the University of Mexico in a basketball game dedicated not only to athletic prowess but also to a spirit of good will and fraternity between na¬ tions. In a section that takes basketball so seriously, it is gratifying that not victory but sportsmanship, clean playing, and friendliness were the paramount objectives. The Mexican Fals led throughout the game and won a very deserv¬ ed victory. Under the capable guidance of Miss Smythie Alford, the team was very successful, winning three games, losing two and tying one. The playing of Captain Zelma Ott proved an inspiration to her team¬ mates and the ability of Lucy Brewer and Lula Brown to find the basket was a constant source of embarrassment to their opponents. As this annual goes to press there is no information available concerning baseball, track or tennis. However, there is a wealth of material, and no doubt these teams will make a creditable showing. McDavid, Travis, McGehee, Parnell, White, (Mgr.), Fitzgerald, Ivy, Lee, Willoughby, Edwards, THEY REPEATED For the first time in history a team won the Southwest Basketball Championship two years consecutively. Led by Captain Alvin Fitzgerald, Pike easily defeated op¬ ponent after opponent, duplicating the success of the 1931 team. “Pee-Wee” Willoughby had the distinction of being high point man in every tour¬ nament in which he participated. Out of a total of twenty-two games, Pike won 19 and lost 2, scoring 794 points agairst 489 to win Pike County, Tri-County and Southwest Mississippi Championships. Pike County Tournament New Zion ... Two speakers can make the same speech, and one will present it in such an enter¬ taining manner that he will win enthusi¬ astic applause. The other with the same words will have half the audience yawning behind their hands, and the entire crowd will be re¬ lieved when he sits down. The difference lies in presentation. Print¬ ing may be so inviting to your eyes as to compel you to read it. Differently print¬ ed, your eyes may instinctively refuse to read the same copy. When your customers yawn at your print¬ ing it means that you have made a mis¬ take .Used a printer who did not understand presentation. Let us vitalize your printing with vigor¬ ous presentation, coupled with a created sales idea that will lift your message out of the just paper-and-mk class and animate it with printed salesmanship which alone can command results.
